Todd Bowles doesn’t sound like a head coach who feels like he needs more pieces to win.
That was the offseason message from One Buc Palace. And moves were made.
The Bucs, however, are 0-3 and injuries weren’t a major factor in the losses like they were last year. The Bucs didn’t play complementary football. They were sloppy and inconsistent. Sunday against the Vikings was a great example: the defense was special, the offense was miserable, and special teams had multiple key penalties and allowed a punt return for a touchdown.
“We just got to cut out our mistakes and we’ll be fine,” Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday.
Yes, Bowles is calm and confident.
And that includes turning the offense over to undrafted rookie free agent QB Jalon Daniels, who will start Sunday against the Packers for Baker Mayfield (bad thumb).
“[Daniels] is very intelligent and nothing really phases him when he goes out there,” Bowles said. “And he practices and works every day like he is the starter, preparing to be the starter. He’s got a good mindset. He can throw the ball, he can run it.
“He understands the game very well, especiallly for a rookie coming in, a free agent rookie at that. So we expect him to do the same thing he’s been doing, and he really earned that spot.”

If the Bucs had decent QB play, they’d be, at worst 7-1 in their last 8 games (probably 8-0 but I haven’t finished the ALL22 yet from Sunday).
Baker has repeatedly cost them games, over and over and over again – even if he didn’t singlehandedly lose the game on Sunday, he sure as hell singlehandedly lost the previous 7 games where the Bucs came up short (not a reflection of Baker’s height, just a commonly used phrase).

He may practice every day but I doubt he’s been getting first team reps. He’s a great addition but there is a reason why most NFL teams want an experienced QB backup. Anyone else watch Case Keenum last night on MNF?

If you watched the games, you’d see Baker repeatedly choke in key situations.
So yes, it’s literally one or two plays – pretty much always by Baker – who has them 2-10 over the last 12.

The defense is giving up 16 points a game this year if you don’t count Baker’s various INTs and fumbles that gave the other team the ball already in FG range, and the special teams TD, and of course the direct TD that Baker gave up via a fumble.
The defense is also directly responsible for 10 points.
So that’s a net of 13 points a game.
The idea that the defense has played poorly this year, up to this point anyways, is fake news.
What isn’t fake news is every single Baker Boi will be rooting for Daniels to fail, because they’re not Bucs fans, they’re all trash from Ohio.

Yeah, I’m not ruling it out yet. I only had a chance to watch the first half of the game on ALL22, and Baker started out the game actually looking good, but started his typical deal of dancing, bailing on plays early, holding the ball forever, and missing guys who were wide open. But, at least in the first half, he didn’t look like a complete disaster and made a handful of nice throws.
The 2nd half will be more telling, since that’s were the repeated 3-and-outs happened. Was it the playcalling, the line, the TE/RB’s getting blown up trying pick up blitzers?
One thing from watching that first half on the ALL22 was how Gainwell was trying his hardest to pass block, but was getting pushed around with ease. Just shows how much White is missed, since he always was in pass protection and excelled at it. I don’t know the size difference between Gainwell and White, but Gainwell looks way too small to be in that role. But also Durham, when they used him early in the half as a blocker, was terrible – and I remember him making repeated appearances in the second half as getting whiffing on blocks, so I expect to see more of that.

And the absolute worst part about this (other than losing Liam Coen) is that now we have to wait a year to watch exciting Buccaneers football.
This feels like the end of the Koetter years where we have talent, but the coaching is awful.

I agree Baker is a massive issue. I agree defense for all the mistakes (there have been a few), have played well enough for an offense scoring 24+ points to win. However, do you think Bowles should be fired? I think he should because he picked Robinson who hasn’t been great, he wanted Baker, approved his first deal and extension. Either the offense or defense struggle and can’t seem to do well in the same game. I could go on but I think he needs to go and I think Licht screwed up extending Baker.

Coaching is by far the biggest problem with the bucs..not personell. Robert Hainsey is a mainstay of the jags oline. Trevor Lawrence looks like a different player. Its coaching!

The answer isn’t “fix the mistakes”… the answer is to fix the reasons why this team does nothing but make mistakes with him as HC. They are not going to win more than 5 games, and I’m being generous.

Everyone has done this as of the last 5 years. Get paid, suck a$$, then get hurt, amazing 👏 I would like to say Jason and Bowles have lost the mojo to put a team together for 4 years. A good Coach and Good GM with a decent QB and we would probably make a deep playoff run. We don’t even know what we have in a lot of these players because they haven’t been coached properly in 4 or 5 years. This team has not even had a head coach since Arians left. Bowles is just a decent DC and that’s about it. He was never head coaching material.

I would have fired Bowles and hired Coen, said so at the time, but unlike 99% of the dummies you now claim they said that – I was also realistic about why the Glazers couldn’t do it, the completely ridiculous hiring and interview process, etc.
This last offseason, with Baker singlehandedly tanking the team and costing them the playoffs, what high profile head coach was going to take the job? What I said was play out this season, and let’s see where we are. If Baker bounces back and the Bucs are winning, then if you still wanted to make a change, you’d have your pick of candidates.
I also said if Baker did no bounce back, if he looked like garbage, at least he’d be off the books and you likely get an excellent young coach coming in who would want to start with a blank slate.
What I said the Bucs should absolutely not do is give Baker an extension – because it could put you in a situation where he looked like the QB from week 7-17 last year, and if he plays so poorly this year he gets everyone fired, what coach is going to want to take this job if they have any other options?
For all the whining about Bowles, it is flat out a fact, the team easily makes the playoffs last year if Baker doesn’t totally collapse, and then the owners rewarded that with an extension.
I don’t care about Bowles in the least, and I hate his dumb super soft garbage zone defense, but I can’t stand all these Baker Boi(s) and low IQ dullards claiming that Bowles is the reason the team is 2-10 in their last 12. He’s not, the defense isn’t the issue, the issue is squarely on one person, Baker Mayfield, and the owners gave him an extension that make him unbenchable, and again, what coach that has any options is going to want to take the job with Baker being a complete anchor on the team for years to come?

Rodney, as you surely know but would never want to admit, obviously one player did not single-handedly lose any of those games. Did he contribute? Certainly, especially as the quarterback. But no one player ever single-handedly loses a game. Not a quarterback. Not the kicker who misses an easy field goal that would have won. Each team has 22 moving parts that contribute in various ways to wins and losses. The QB typically, but not always, contribute to the most. And I know for some reason this this is your hell to die on, but it’s simply not true. Literally. Anywho…

Yes, the Baker situation complicates the hiring process for the next coach which will obviously be our new coach hired during the off season. But…. This is a head coaching job in the NFL. Only 32 of them. There will be many suitors for a franchise that has won two super bowls Baker or no Baker. And he’s only tied to him for next season. Last year of the contract is not guaranteed.

I agree that IF it were possible to have Bowles “retire” and hire Coen it would have been an excellent move. As noted by you and others, the Bucs were 10-7 and got to the playoffs so optics and contract wise there was no way to have Bowles step down and firing him would have looked bad and costly. I wish it had happen. If the Bucs said “hey here is the HC job” and he had to choose Bucs or Jags, I would have gone with Jags given how much cap space and future potential they had at the time.
Lot of people focus on the 3rd and 28 yards fiasco as Bowles defense failed but if Baker gets a first down at the end of that game OR he makes 1-2 less mistakes in the other losses then they make the playoffs. Nuff said about past hypotheticals.
Let’s look at a future one. So leading into the likelihood of Bowles being fired, you are right it would be hard to entice a good HC candidate. Now if we end up with a top 5 pick, a new offensive minded HC might say I’ll take the job IF I can draft a QB and eventually trade Baker if he never improves. However, our cap space is in rough shape unless we trade some people away…big contracts that don’t win would be a good place to start if possible.

We all know Baker has exceptional skills as a quarterback. The question is why is he not playing up to his level of skills ? What has him off his game ? I have my speculations but I’m guessing. It’s either the OCs fault or something in Bakers off the field life.
I wish we knew, probably will soon. I believe Jalon will outplay him against the Packers.

I have seen quite a few teams and coaches in the NFL, over the last 60 years+,but Bowles has to be completely unaware of his terrible coaching and it’s effect on the players and fans.
To place an undrafted free agent quarterback, with no NFL experience, into a must win game, is one of the worst decisions that I have ever seen in all my years. I do believe that Bowles and Licht should be fired immediately. This team is in a death spiral and the players and coaches will pay the price, down the road. No one should be that stupid and coach an NFL team

I watched the Bowles interviews on the Ronde Barber Podcast and he lit up like a Christmas tree talking about Daniels. And seemed kind of meh when talking about Baker. Of course this was before the contract but still. Things could get weird here if Daniels plays like I, and Bowles, thinks he can.

Man Rod & Lakeland really hate Mayfield. Hey I get it someone has to shoulder the blame and he’s the QB. Really not playing well at all! Problem I have is no one is actually blaming who gave up the winning score. The Special Teams! Also responsible for quite a few loses last season as well. Who is responsible for the Offense, Defense & Special Teams? Bowles! You can point your finger at individuals (I have) or you can just face the fact that the Head Coach is in charge of EVERYTHING and he’s responsible. I wouldn’t Trade, Bench, Move, or even mention a player’s name until he is replaced. Coen would not be 0-3 with this same exact team freaking guaranteed!!!!

Did anyone see how great Case Keenum was last night? Ben Johnson schemed up the perfect game plan to take advantage of Case’s strengths and minimize his weaknesses! That’s exactly what this offense needs. The play-calling was atrocious on the final drive when Baker was injured! What frustrates me even more, living in Denver, is seeing how a competent staff makes adjustments to win a game. Bo Nix can be just as reckless as Baker Mayfield, yet his OC can put him in a position to make plays! Until this team has a coaching staff of the caliber of Ben Johnson or Sean Payton, they are doomed!

Seriously, the only stat I care about defensively is whether you gave up fewer points than you scored. I don’t care if you win by 1 or 50—a win is a win.
Defense isn’t about not giving up yards or even points. It’s about rising to the occasion when it matters, stepping up on, well, I don’t know… 3rd and 28.
Again, blame Baker that day and for every game since, and I have no argument. But at the end of the day, it’s a team sport, and I just watched the Giants win 12-7.

Of course, neither did anyone else! Every week it’s something else. This week was the return for a TD! Next week it MAY be the D

I’m leaning more towards the OC being the main problem. Why? Because not only Baker is underperforming but so is the oline the backs and receivers as well.

The fact that these long conversions are given permanent, capitalized nicknames in NFL folklore is ultimate proof of how rare and catastrophic they actually are—if giving up a 3rd or 4th-and-20+ was “just something that happens to every team,” historical plays wouldn’t be immortalized for decades as 4th & 26, Jet Chip Wasp, The Miracle in Motown, 4th & 29, or 3rd and 28(hasnt been that long). But because a conversion from that distance is a statistical anomaly that occurs less than 5% of the time, converting one isn’t viewed as routine football; it is considered an unforgivable defensive disaster that breaks season trajectories, fires coaching staffs, and earns a permanent name in league history that haunts fan bases forever.

And then when Baker comes back, the losing will prob resume at that point.
If we win 3-4 games in a row, Daniels should earn the right to keep starting in my book.
Let Baker sit on the sidelines and count his money rather than losing us more football games.

If the Bucs had decent QB play, they’d be, at worst 7-1 in their last 8 games (probably 8-0 but I haven’t finished the ALL22 yet from Sunday).
Baker has repeatedly cost them games, over and over and over again – even if he didn’t singlehandedly lose the game on Sunday, he sure as hell singlehandedly lost the previous 7 games where the Bucs came up short (not a reflection of Baker’s height, just a commonly used phrase).
