Skip Bayless Is Outraged Baker Mayfield Was Not Selected To BSPN’s Top-100
September 2nd, 2026
Disrespected (again).
So BSPN is thieving from prickly Pete Prisco, eh?
Prisco, the long-time CBS NFL columnist, has for many years cobbled together a Top-100 list each summer.
Yeah, NFL Network (now owned by BSPN overlord Disney) also has an annual feature that they milk throughout the months of July and August. It’s a players-selected Top-100 each. Most people regard that exercise as a complete joke.
BSPN’s list seems dubious right off the bat as they included 16 (!) quarterbacks. A No. 16 quarterback is average. How in the hell can you include an average player at his position as one of the top-100 players? That simply does not compute.
But, it’s BSPN, whaddya expect? And people wonder why Joe hates that outfit.
However, of those 16 quarterbacks, you will not find Baker Mayfield. And that has the notorious Skip Bayless outraged.

Sam Darnold, Jalen Hurts, Trevor Lawrence, Jared Goff and Brock Purdy made the BSPN top-100.
Jeremy Fowler of BSPN allowed some NFL suits to look at the list before it was published and wanted their feedback. He asked who may have been hosed. The very first name the suits mentioned was Mayfield.
Sixteen quarterbacks made this year’s top 100, and Mayfield was not one.
Mayfield ranks third in passing yards (12,237) and second in touchdown passes (95) since 2023. He has had some success in Tampa Bay, so much so that he turned down a two-year extension of over $100 million in hopes of more long-term security with his team. Mayfield is poised for another big year, which should help his standing on the list.
“When he’s healthy, he’s a top-10 quarterback,” an NFL personnel evaluator said. “I don’t think he was healthy last year. He should have a big season.”
Joe found it more than interesting that NFL reporter James Palmer said on the “Heed the Call” podcast this week he was told by “people in the building” at One Buc Palace that they believe the collapse of 2025 happened not so much because of all the injuries on offense, but because Mayfield was so banged up he “couldn’t move,” Palmer said.
Palmer’s Bucs sources told him Mayfield, when he was healthy, was finding ways to win despite the injuries everywhere else on offense. That stopped when he got beat up.
So Joe will ask (rhetorically) once again:
If Mayfield was this beat up, then why wasn’t Teddy Bridgewater on the field?
And if you didn’t trust Bridgewater, then why the hell was he even on the roster?

September 2nd, 2026 at 7:20 am
I know the fans are all hyped about Jalon Daniels.
My guess is if he ever gets into a regular season game, Bucs fans better hope we are wearing our Pewter pants so they can’t tell when he actually cr*ps in his own pants.

I’d loved to have been a fly on the wall listening to the debate at 1 Buc about why to get rid of Trask and go to Teddy
September 2nd, 2026 at 7:52 am
So⦠essentially we have replaced one veteran backup quarterback who physically can play
With a rookie quarterback who does not know the professional game mentally
So in either case the team is SOL if Baker Mayfield goes down.
That is putting the whole franchise at riskā¦
Genius generalship JL
September 2nd, 2026 at 7:58 am
Keep in mind Skip also thought that Johnny Manzel was going to multiple pro bowls and would be a franchise player, just like the Joes. And we all saw how that turned out. Rankings don’t matter. Baker started every game because he wasn’t injured. Injured players dont play. Evans was injured last year when was out for however many games, same with Jmac. Bridgewater was on the team cause Bowles wanted to give a friend a job. We all saw last pre-season that Teddy wasn’t good. Bowles is clueless on how to run a professional team. It’s very simple.
September 2nd, 2026 at 7:59 am
They’ll just have to shave down the play list a bit, or mebbe a LOT if it happens in the first month or 2
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:00 am
“Injured” players don’t play, but HURT players play
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:08 am
It’s all just outside noise. Let’s tee it up and get after it.
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:10 am
The perplexing part of Bridgewater becoming our backup quarterback is that he really never got a chance. You canāt include the Rams game- behind by 30 points when he got in the game? BS! The playbook was out the window, no way was it fair to judge him on that one half.
Iām thinking Mayfield was healthy enough to play the games he played. Baker made a few mistakes and our team of backup players wasnāt good enough to overcome that. Weād have been embarrassed in the playoffs- we just werenāt a playoff team.
We were also having some issues that we may not ever know what those issues were.
These new offensive coaches, we are already in better shape if we are without our starting quarterback. The players have alot of confidence in Danielās game. Stick is better than Browning and Bazelak, I think.
We have improved in our QB room. Will it be enough? We will find out pretty quick if Baker goes down.
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:13 am
Well, he is not a top 100 NFL player. As I told you guys several times in the past, and you all laughed, Jalon Daniels will be the starting QB by the end of the season
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:14 am
Why didn’t JL do anything through the draft, a trade or free agency to get any top second tear o-linemen in here for Baker!? Maybe not in the team’s long-term plans!?
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:17 am
And now we have an UDFA as QB2. Don’t get me wrong, I like his upside. But signing a listless Browning wasn’t good enough. Especially when you factor in Baker’s style of play. At least JD is similar in stature and style of play, which keeps the playbook open. They’re banking on Baker, and if he gets hurt again (strong bet), a retool is coming and why not see what you have in Daniels. If the season is lost, all options are on the table for GM, HC & QB.
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:28 am
Smashsquatch: Agreed re stature and style of play, but I think the plan is to keep the team rolling through a Mayfield injury, rather than retool.
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:32 am
You would think the focus would be on winning games. Not making meaningless lists.
Perhaps if Baker hadnāt been a part of a collapse from 5-1 to 8-9 and no playoffs heād have a few votes for the precious list.
Mr Mid QB has certainly earned the expulsion from the top 100.
Just gotta scrub QB it better.
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:42 am
It looks like the Bucs brass shut down the season because of all the injuries on the offense. I hope the Bucs organization learned lessons from their mistakes. If not there needs to be a big house cleaning starting at the top of the organization.
September 2nd, 2026 at 8:47 am
Jason Licht overplayed his hand last season
He extended Kyle Trask, then cut him.
Then signed a high school coach for his backup QB
But, this fanbase gave Licht a free pass, as usual
Licht absolutely did nothing to strengthen this roster last season
But this season is different, he’s making the all of the right moves
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:06 am
@bee
“Baker started every game because he wasnāt injured. Injured players dont play. ”
The stupidity just keeps flowing from the kiddie BDS crew.
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:15 am
I’ve always wondered… what does the “B” stand for in BSPN?
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:16 am
Trask was due more money than what they paid Teddy the Stiff. Purely financial. If it wasnāt, then psychiatric treatment is needed.
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:49 am
Baker has not been in the top 10 of QBR rankings since he has been with the Bucs.
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:51 am
And you could also ask, if Mayfield’s injuries were to blame, why did you launch the OC? Continuity, for once, would have been nice.
Either way polls are for losers. Rankings are opinions, wins are facts.
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:53 am
Does it matter ? Adam Schine picked the Bucs 4th in our division, Jumpednon the Saints bandwagon ,, Can Bowles and Baker save their jobs or are we tanking for Arch
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:57 am
“And if you didnāt trust Bridgewater, then why the hell was he even on the roster?”
To me, the answer is obvious…though it is all assumption on my part. I believe:
Bowles had always wanted to coach Bridgewater, so when Teddy went through that whole college thing, he wanted to support him. Licht threw him a bone and signed him.
From Licht’s perspective at the time, it would have seemed like a no-risk move. Baker never came out of games because he was so tough.
Unfortunately, Baker badly needed to take time off, and Bridgewater was so bad Mayfield refused to sit.
September 2nd, 2026 at 10:03 am
Marty, is so that the first two letters are BS. And I think you know what that means. It’s the Joe’s being irreverent. Like their inability to write the coach’s name without referencing a candy bar first.
September 2nd, 2026 at 10:09 am
Baker is who he is, not great, not horrible.
Team 1: He was given a way out of Cleveland when they signed Deshaun Watson, who was playing great at the time, but had some major pervert issues. Bad move by Cleveland.
Team 2: In Carolina he started and was benched for Sam Darnold. Bakerās fans say bad move, but Darnold won the Super Bowl last year. So I guess itās how you choose to look at it.
Team 3: Baker begs out of Carolina where he went to the Rams and started four games, going 1-3.
LA let him walk after the season and chose to stay with an aging Matthew Stafford over a far younger Mayfield. Bakerās fans think Sean McVay is an idiot for letting him go. So off he went to ā¦
Team 4: Baker comes here and continues his .500 self. After finishing 2-7 last year he refused a two-year extension at 50 mil per. Bakerās fans think he should be given more, but his detractors were thrilled he did not get it.
During every no-bye week, 1696 players suit up for an NFL game. Is Baker among the top 100?
You be the judge.
September 2nd, 2026 at 10:19 am
Jalon Daniels will not take a snap unless Baker AND Easton Stick are both injured.
Bucs didnāt want to chance him being plucked from the practice squad. Easton already knows this offense and has some game experience.
September 2nd, 2026 at 10:39 am
JA ,, Baker was 2-3 in LA , 4 TDs 2ints,, and I am not sure I have ever, and I mean ever heard anyone on here say McVay was nuts for keeping an Aging Stafford(Still playing with a Super Bowl/MVP btw), pretty sure they offered to keep Baker on as a back up but he wanted to start somewhere. He took Cleveland to the playoffs for the first time in God knows when , and Carolina was a disaster for him and Darnold . And to answer you final question, Yes! Some on here would take him over Jordan Love/Jayden Daniels /Goff/ Purdy and some would not , but if your putting those guys in top 100 then so should our guy
September 2nd, 2026 at 10:41 am
There are plenty of teams that are absolutely cooked if their starter goes down. Even some of the good ones. There are barely 32 starting-caliber QBs in the league, let alone 64.
September 2nd, 2026 at 10:47 am
sounds about right….i have baker at #15
GO BUCS!!!!
September 2nd, 2026 at 11:00 am
JA. You say Mayfield was benched for Darnold? Darnold started 11 games for Carolina in 2021. Mayfield was signed by Carolina in July of 2022 and named the starter on August 22, 2022 after a competitive QB battle with Darnold.
His opening opponent was none other than the Browns, and Baker did what Baker does. I flew to Charlotte for the game. Baker flung a TD pass after a lengthy drive to give the Panthers the lead with 30 seconds remaining. Of course the Browns kicked a 57 yard field goal with no time remaining to win.
By the time the head coach was fired 5 games into the season, it was a few short weeks later Baker asked for his release and picked up by the Rams and 2 days later nfl record 98 yards game winning drive in under a minute. He closed the Rams season 3 weeks later by hanging 57 points on Sean Peyton and the Broncos. The Broncos had like the fifth or 6th best defense in the league in 2022.

The year that we played Kansas City in the Super Bowl, their team was as beat up as our team was last year. Yet, Mahomes let them through the playoffs and to the Super Bowl that is a franchise quarterback. Baker is a good quarterback, but he needs everything around him to be perfect in order to be successful.
These are the injuries that Kansas City had through the last part of the season and through the playoffs.
Patrick Mahomes (QB) ā suffered a concussion in the Divisional Round against Cleveland but returned for the AFC Championship Game.
⢠Clyde Edwards-Helaire (RB) ā missed time late in the regular season with hip and ankle injuries before returning in the playoffs.
⢠LeāVeon Bell (RB) ā battled a knee injury late in the season and during the playoffs.
⢠Sammy Watkins (WR) ā missed several games with a calf injury and returned during the postseason.
⢠Daniel Sorensen (S) ā dealt with knee issues during the playoff run.
⢠Rashad Fenton (CB) ā missed postseason time with a foot injury.
⢠Bashaud Breeland (CB) ā appeared on injury reports late in the season.
⢠Mike Remmers (OL) ā appeared on injury reports with back/neck issues during Week 15. Week 15 Injury Report | Chiefs vs. Saints
⢠Damien Wilson (LB) ā missed time with a knee injury. Week 15 Injury Report | Chiefs vs. Saints
⢠Darwin Thompson (RB) ā was listed as out during the final weeks of the season. Week 15 Injury Report | Chiefs vs. Saints
Eric Fisher (LT) ā tore his Achilles tendon in the AFC Championship Game and missed Super Bowl LV. Kansas City Chiefs LT Eric Fisher out for Super Bowl LV with … – ESPN
⢠Mitchell Schwartz (RT) ā out with a back injury and did not return for the playoffs or Super Bowl LV
Baker proved last season that he is not capable of putting the team on his back like mahommes did and like Brady has done so many times.
Sadly, regardless of Mayfields success this year it will not prove anything because we could put any average QB behind a great Oline with great receivers and a great defensive and they will get us to the playoffs and beyond.
We had Brad Johnson when we won our first Super Bowl. No one would consider him an elite quarterback.
The Bucs realize this also. Thatās why next year Baker will be playing for the Steelers and JD will be our starting QB. Unless we win the Lombardi. And maybe even then.
September 2nd, 2026 at 11:20 am
I have more confidence in Jalon Daniels as a backup than I ever had with Teddy last year. Several years ago he was a competent backup but last year he came out of retirement just to collect a pay check. Shame on Jason and Todd for having him as our backup last year and forcing Baker to play injured.
September 2nd, 2026 at 11:21 am
Vinny, thanks for setting the record straight with the obviously biased output by JA. Listen, I’m not a Baker Homer but he’s my quarterback so he’s obviously my guy. He gets enough crap without having fiction contribute to it.
September 2nd, 2026 at 11:22 am
Kenton,
I was merely pointing out Bakerās career, but you sycophants take it personally, like heās a family member. Who cares if Joe Blow started in Carolina?
He was benched and went to LA where he went 1-3 as a starter. But that doesnāt matter to people like you, the comeback is his only game!
I have no idea how this guy has this power over you people.
Reminds me of Jim Jones and the cool aid drinkers.
Iāve NEVER seen a sports player with average to above average abilities garner so much blind worship.
When he screws up itās always the other personās fault.
Screws up more, heās injured.
If he was the player you say he is, at the very least he should have demanded less money, like Brady. But Baker only cares about Baker.
In the history of the NFL, what player thumbs his nose at a big raise after finishing 2-7?
What player turns his back on a raise he shouldnāt have been offered in the first place?
Why did Sean McVay let him walk? Iām sure in your mind heās Stafford x 10! Is McVay delusional, or is the shoe on the other foot?

Jeeeze Atlbuc thanks for pointing out Baker isnāt as good a QB is Mahomes , I mean wow , youāve made national news going out on that limb! where is trask now? that should tell you all you need to know. the falcons and panthers don’t even want him on their practice squad after seeing what he can do, and no other team has any interest in him at all, but you people still think that he was/is a viable QB2?
September 2nd, 2026 at 12:29 pm
Kenton. Stop saying ours you’re only here for Baker and when he leaves you will be gone just like the Brady fans left once Brady left. They to use to say our team and they were just like you a fake bucs fan . They’re all back in New England just like you and Baker fan , ex browns 002 and the all the others will be back in Cleveland !!

This is one of the reasons why I hope the bucs draft a quarterback because of fans like you and the Brady fan boys.
September 2nd, 2026 at 12:34 pm
I do not trust Baker, he looks for contact many times, yeah Joe Burrow found out about that. Bake was hurt so much last year. Unless the leopard changed his spots, Baker will play his reckless gung ho “get beat up style of play”. How long till he is holding a clipboard because he is to best up to play????
September 2nd, 2026 at 12:47 pm
Oneilbuc. Never been to Cleveland in my life. Went to Columbus 55 years ago and watched Ohio State play Michigan. August 1976 Buc. Baker misses less games to injury than about 95% of the QBs out there. I believe heās started 51 games and 3 playoff games of the 54 games heās been here. Man, heās durable. Every player on the field has a chance of getting injured, every single play.

It probably went like this:
Todd: Jason, I think we should replace Kyle with Teddy Bridgewater.
Jason: Why Todd? Teddy coaches a high school football team, has been out of the league and wasn’t that good when he played.
Todd: Well Jason, you remember that fake QB competition we had with Baker and Kyle. I think the fans know that we intended to start Baker all along.
Jason: Hell Todd, everyone knows that.
Todd: But, if Bake ever gets hurt and Kyle has to take the field, I don’t think we could ever justify starting Baker again. We would be totally exposed.
Jason: Okay, Todd but what if we actually have to play Teddy in a game. We both know he’s awful!
Todd: It doesn’t matter because we both know that Bake is never going to sit and he will get mad if I sit him.

Your “facts” on Darnold are full of bologna. The 2021 season at Carolina Darnold was benched several times and ended the season with 9 td’s and 13 ints. In the 2022 season Baker was benched for Darnold after the team lost to Baltimore 13-3. Darnold was picked up in free agency by Seattle as a backup. Even lousy Carolina didn’t think much of him.
So you like player statistics. How come Tom Brady didn’t win the Wild card playoff game in his last season at the Bucs? Could it have something to do with team injuries or was he just bad?

No we think you are the idiot for making things up. Don’t know a single fan that ever said anything close and Baker never went 1-3 with the Rams. Thats just two straight up lies. Stafford was not retiring and helped win the Rams a superbowl. If not just about every ram’s fan would have been gung ho. He is deeply loved there for the only memorable games of that season when he broke their losing streak.

I just saw an amazing stat…
Since 2017, QB’s record when their defense allows 21+ points…
#1 Mahomes, 34-24, with a 58.6% win rate
#28 Mayfield, 16-51, with a 23.8% win rate
For Baker, that puts him right behind Bryce Young (27th) and Andy Dalton (26th, but in front of Matt Jones (29th).
MAKE HIM THE HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE NFL!

Rod. Munchesonandonandonandon⦠it may be reasonable to think that Mahomes would be in that position that he is in with the Chiefs. 34-24.
It may be reasonable to think that Baker would be in that position that he is in with the Browns and Bucs 16-51. And the Panthers, and when he went to the Rams they were miserable 3-8 when he got there.
Iām thinking that stat, which we saw one alot like it yesterday, is flawed at its core. You oughta understand that, Rod. Not the first part- that takes reasoning. The second part, Rod- the flawed at the core part.

Is that the standard for an elite, $60M franchise QB? If thats the case, let’s add Jameis, Kyler Murray, Jaylon Daniels and many more “exciting” QBs to the Elite $60M club.
Baker is fun to watch.but his on field decisions need to be geared towards the team and not his ego. There needs to be something inside of him, like Brady and Manning and even Mahommes that says, “I know I can run over this linebacker but if I get injured, it will hurt the team.” Which HOF QB have you ever seen try to run over defensive players? Even Lamar has enough sense to get down and run out of bounds.

LOL! What a poor attempt at spin – the point is how the QBs do when their defenses aren’t doing their jobs, can they score points when you need them to win, or do they just have a bunch of garbage time stats and points…
But OK, let’s up it to 28 points…
When their defense gives up 28+ points:
Patrick Mahomes: 14-15 in the regular season, a 48.3% win rate. Including playoffs, he is 18-18, a 50.0% win rate.
Baker Mayfield: 5-30 in the regular season, a 14.3% win rate. Including playoffs, he is 6-31, a 16.2% win rate.
Bakerās one playoff win was Clevelandās 48-37 win over Pittsburgh in 2021. And even that is a little misleading: Cleveland went up 28-0 in the first quarter, and Pittsburgh scored a bunch of garbage time points while trying to come back – it wasn’t a bad defensive game.
September 2nd, 2026 at 9:54 pm

ATLBuc. If youāve got Jameis, or Kyler Murray, or even Jaden Daniels playing football- then the average football fan will watch Baker Mayfield play in front of any of those guys, unless they are a fan of one of those teams. Thatās the effect he has on the average fan- Iāve seen it for many years.
I think itās because heās a winner. Iām cool with him playing out his contract, too. But donāt compare him to those other three in terms of excitement- or value. That would be dumb.
