Bucs can dump baker after 28′ if the playoffs wins dont arrive and/or he continues to get hurt and play reckless…

Clearly, we had the cap space this year, and it’s really only two more years. Look at Kirk Cousins. We could still be drafting a QB in the next few years.
The truth is, this puts the pressure on Baker to perform like a top-tier QB, or in 2028, they’re drafting his replacement. He basically has this year and next, and then he would be a backup and/or fighting a rookie, more than likely a first-rounder, for that starting job if we don’t go deep into the playoffs and/or Super Bowl.

Wrong. Baker’s pay doesn’t change this year. This deal doesn’t affect this year’s cap money at all.

Yes, no other option. What other QB is available that is of the same quality? The Bucs have never developed a long term QB and getting top rank starters in FA is pretty rare.

I voted no.
Baker is one of my favorite Bucs players over the past 25 years. However, if the Bucs underperform and Todd Bowles is fired, then the next head coach may not be a Baker guy. I would have waited and taken the risk in the off-season.
I’m not paid to make these kinds of decisions, but this decision makes me believe Todd Bowles has better job security than most people think.

I wanted this to be a prove it year for Baker, but I am not against him being signed. Especially if there’s only like $55M in guaranteed money. That will be the determining factor of whether or not I like the signing. Now, the chip on his shoulder is keeping #10 on the bench!

I said no. Here’s why……
Mayfield FELL APART the last half of the 2025 season.
Maybe it was injuries, maybe it was having 2 inept guards trying to pass protect that should be working at Walmart.
I would have had him play this season out and see how he looks.
If it looked solid, offer the deal towards the end of the season….
Like the Joe’s have said. If Baker had a crappy year and Bucs have a losing record, Bowles will get the axe. The next HC hire may not want Mayfield leading the offense 🤷🏻♂️..

i definitely understand the “NO” comments….but the deal isnt “long” term…
Baker could easily be traded to the Vikings/Jets/ Cardinals next year IF bowles gets the axe and the new HC prefers a rookie….that way we get something for showing him the door

lol – NFL.com ranked Baker the 14th best starter in the NFL – the Bucs are facing 8 QBs that are ranked higher – thankfully it’s a team game but a post-season berth will be elusive if the team is already down by 8 games – it would probably require a sweep of the division – go Bucs !

Then there’s the Tua story:

My point is this: whether it be Baker Mayfield or the greatest QB in NFL history, giving that much money to any single player is just plain stupid.
Even if Baker plays well it’s goodbye to excellent free agents. KC is seeing it now with Mahomes. It’s a team game, not a one player attraction. And with the exception when Mahomes hadn’t lost his good players to free agency yet, this paying one player in an injury packed league, has NEVER worked.
Tom Brady always took less. He wanted to win! Not so much with players today.

Very stupid. Waiting until the end of season made more sense. Now if they have a poor season and Bowles fired, why would a top Offensive mind take this job being tied to Baker and an extreme salary for an average QB.
Prediction – Bucs record will get worse each year because they will have to sacrifice at other positions for overpaying Baker. If Allen, Lamar, Burrows, Herbert and Mahomes can’t win the Super Bowl when they take too big a share of the cap, why would anyone think Baker could. Note: Mahomes won it all when he was on a rookie contract & took a team friendly deal.
Baker is not a team guy. He is me first.

It’s a risky move for the Bucs. They are paying exponentially more than the last few years for him. Were those good contracts for the Bucs, yes. However, we did not win much of anything. Now we are paying a lot more. The million dollar questions are will he be truly be a franchise QB and we actually win because of him? To me he has never been a franchise QB. Hes been close here and there, but never consistent.
At 31, has he peaked? Can he actually carry a team like franchise QBs we can all agree on? By asking the question means he is not a franchise QB. Franchise QBs dont play for four teams in what, 18 months, especially when they are in their prime.
JL and the owners are scared of drafting a QB early. Think JL has drafted JW and Trask? Thats scared. JL knows if he whiffs on a QB in round 1 its the kiss of death. Thus, he pushed to sign Bake. However, the length of contract tells me the are not totally in for the long term future.
I like Bake, but he is a franchise talker, now he needs to be a franchise QB, and not for six weeks.

Wouldn’t have thought that with all of the anti-Baker commentary over past couple months. Perhaps it’s just the vocal teensy tiny minority posting repeatedly day in/day out that the vast majority of us are all clowns and sheep (sheeple?).
Not saying they’re wrong of course as no one can predict the future. Cheers to different views and opinions (without having to disparage others)!

Magoobe. I’m all about a men getting his money i mean i would have taken the money as well. I never cared about how much money they gave him my concern was about the years and 2 year deal with the 3rd year optional is a good contract for a 32 year old quarterback next year. They can move on from him 2029 so it’s a good contract but now he has to win a superbowl no more excuses. He has to close out games and over come injuries to the o line or even the defense. If the defense gives up 20 points he has to score 21 points no more excuses about what don’t have. He has to be clutch in big games like the playoffs and like last year the second half of the season he has to come threw no excuses!!
