Why Was Sean Tucker On The Field?

Joe can only think of one logical excuse for this and sadly, people may jump to the wrong conclusion.
Joe has a hunch on a few other teams; Bucs running back Sean Tucker could be a No. 1 back. As it is, Tucker gives the Bucs perhaps one of the best 1-2-3 punches in the NFL at running back.
How many NFL teams have a No. 3 back like Tucker?
So Joe doesn’t know why, especially with a running back, the Bucs had Tucker out there to absorb punishment last night against the Jets. Running backs have short shelf lives as it is.
Has Tucker not demonstrated he’s a quality running back off the bench? It seems whenever he has been given a chance to carry the mail, he delivers.
So Joe was uncomfortable seeing Tucker out there in the second quarter in a worthless preseason game. The only logical reason he should have been out there (and Joe doesn’t know if this is an issue) is if Tucker might be struggling with the new playbook of Bucs offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.
Joe vividly remembers seeing Jalen McMillan go down in Pittsburgh last summer. All it takes is for some idiot piece of Jets camp meat trying to make a splash play to injure a guy.
Tucker on the field in the second quarter was a bit reckless.

He’s our best short yardage and fastest RB. Save him. Give the work to Josh Williams and guys I don’t even know their names.

Not getting hurt has become the number one objective of preseason football for guys that are good enough to already know they’re gonna make the team.

I thought I was seeing things he also was the kick returner after they scored with 9 minutes in the 4th. He kneeled on it in the end zone didn’t return it. But he was the kick returner after I did a double take because I thought that was really odd he would be the return man in the 4th quarter

I’m not buying at all, not even for one minute, that SEAN TUCKER would be a #1 ‘Running Back’ ANYWHERE, unless it was only due to an injury. 💯 There is NO WAY. I mean, you can easily run off 20+NAMES, before you’d even consider BUCKY (and that would only be based off of just the ONE season). There are lots and LOTS of great RB’s in this league. Sean TUCKER a “Number-1?” Get Out. That is obviously coming from living inside of “Bucs Training Camp” for way too long.

I mean, there are at least a ‘handful of guys’ drafted within just these past TWO DRAFTS, that ALL-32 TEAMS would take OVER HIM. AT LEAST. So, that’s just ridiculous. There is a very good reason for why he is BEHIND friggin’ Bucky and Kenny. Come on.

If he was actually HIM, all 31 other teams wouldn’t have left him on read or passed him by when he was an unrestricted free agent this year.
Again: He. Is. Third. String.

On top of that, Sean Tucker only got four carries.
Four.
That isn’t an “absorbing amount of punishment.” That’s light work.
Let’s ground this in reality: Tucker is a solid depth piece—but he’s not Derrick Henry, so there’s no reason to give him the museum-glass treatment. Yeah, he’s got burst when his number is called. But he absolutely ain’t got the juice to be sitting out preseason games like an established vet.
Check the receipts. Last year, he averaged 3.7 yards a pop, only saw the field for 15.6% of the offensive snaps, and had to grind out 127 snaps on special teams just to get on the grass.
Again, you don’t put a rotational guy in bubble wrap. Let that man get that work.
That’s basic coaching 101.

God forbid Curt Cignetti, Ryan Day, Jim Harbaugh, or Kirby Smart let a 3rd-string rotation piece touch the field during a spring ball scrimmage. 😱
Could you imagine trying to tell any of those guys that an RB3 is too precious to take reps in an intrasquad run-through? They’d laugh you right out of the facility.
You don’t build a winning roster by hiding your depth guys from contact. You put the pads on and find out what they’re made of.

Like any head coach, Bowles deserves his fair share of heat when it’s actually earned. Nobody is pretending the man is above criticism.
But putting every routine football decision under a microscope—and spinning four preseason carries by an RB3 into reckless endangerment?

Tucker is third string. You can believe he shouldn’t be, but that doesn’t change the depth chart. And if he’s supposedly built to absorb a lead back’s punishment, four preseason carries shouldn’t require an emergency investigation.

Between complaining about players who didn’t play, then complaining about those that did, it’s obvious some people just like to complain.
For this specific game scenario (1st preseason game after two scrimmages) I have zero problem sitting people out when they were playing on what some people call the worst field in the league.

I felt the Same way Joe an also when I Saw Roberts playing Defense in the 4th quarter after already proving he shouldn’t be out there IMO I know you have to play some guys but damn get Them off the field these are guys who are in the Rotation an could be 1 play away from starting why risk it

Good lord! He’s the 3rd strung running back fing RB. He cant play a quarter or two in a scrimmage? Should they just bubble wrap all the players?? Why have camp? Why bother playing anyone in the preseason?
The JETS had the majority of their starters playing minus their QB. Is Tucker better or more valuable than Bryce Hall?

Tuck is a solid third option, the backfield should be exciting this season. Each back has different strengths yet a lot of similarities. With a healthy Oline the run game should be back in the top 10 at least!

Tucker is easily the most overrated player on the team based on fans responses. He’s a guy who can’t block and will get your QB killed, and he has zero vision and very little cutback ability. He’s nothing but a basic north south rusher, and people think he’s the next Emmitt Smith with the speed of Bo Jackson.
Meanwhile, in reality, any team could have signed him to an offer sheet, and they all passed.
Tucker is fine as a #3 RB, but that’s all he is. Sure, he can have a big game once in a while, but so could Ke’shawn Vaughn and Lars Tate.

I’m with Joe, fellow sad commentors: Tucker is a #1 elsewhere. Did you watch him vs Bills? Or the Saints the year prior? He’s only won NFC offensive player of the week several times. Think Joe has the angle here as well- we don’t want to loose him but we don’t really know how to use him in the past. He’s an old school 90’s style lead blocker runner by nature. Only other explanation I fear is that we are playing him because we are shopping him as part of a larger deal.

In no way can you justify paying a third string running back 3 million dollars. He needs to be traded, he’s playing deep into the second quarter of a meaningless preseason game so he’s not as good as people make him out to be

Hopefully he stays healthy. I have often felt that he should play more. All the guy does is gain yardage every time he is in there. Of course he is not Bucky or Gainewell but the guy can run the ball and he can catch as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if some running back needy team tries to make a trade for him.

The only reason that Tucker wasn’t drafted was because he had a heart condition. That’s supposedly not an issue anymore. I firmly believe if he was given more of a chance, he could be a starting running back. He does need to work on his pass protection.

When did Tucker become a world beater lol. He is a good #3 running back if he is as good as some fans claim even joe on this article trade him for something and williams can be the #3 but he isn’t so he will stay with the bucs.

Sadly, it looks like I called it this morning when it comes to the field they played on last night.
If you missed it, Jamal Adam’s of the Vikings just had a non-contact injury against the Giants.
I didn’t want anyone who we even think about as a starter putting one foot on that turf.

People in the comments talk about Tucker being able to start for any team in the NFL, and the Bucs not being willing to trade him even for a 1st round pick (seriously – that’s not made up, that’s an actual quote from last year). He has one good game a year, vs a terrible run defense (Saints gave up in 2024, and the Bills were the worst rushing defense in football last year), then backs it up by doing nothing, and people act like he’s a future HOFer. At least Baker can give you a handful of good games a year, not just one and done like Tucker.

You realize ANY team in the NFL could have signed him this past offseason, and they all passed. Who exactly is now deciding that they’re going to trade for him? Maybe the Bucs could get a conditional 6th rounder for him if another franchise’s team plane crashed and they had to start over, but that’s likely the ceiling. With that said, I hope I’m wrong (about the Bucs only being able to get a 6th, I’d love to swindle another team out of a higher pick).

He did very little with what he was given, running straight into piles with a lot of hesitation, where as Josh Williams showed up last night. Soured me kind of on Tucker after that. Luke it was said he can have a good game here and there like @ Saints and Bullsbut he’s no starter for a reason.
