Really Good Nugget About Ted Hurst (Video)

August 5th, 2026

Solid camp.

More and more each practice, Joe comes away impressed by rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst.

Hurst has had few wow plays. He’s had a ton of solid plays.

When Joe types “wow plays,” Joe means plays that make you go, “Wow.” You know, like Antonio Brown used to do. Or Mike Evans.

Joe hasn’t seen much wow out of Hurst, just a lot of good. Hurst had a sweet contested touchdown grab on a throw from Baker Mayfield last night. (See video below)

Hurst reminds Joe of a tall, lanky, fast Chris Godwin. The Bucs’ veteran receiver doesn’t make many wow plays. But damn if he isn’t as dependable as they come.

Practice after practice, day after day, Hurst just makes catches. Consistent as can be. Pads on or pads off, doesn’t matter.

Well, even though Hurst has been damn consistent and solid, KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Hurst’s head has been spinning from Zac Robinson’s playbook.

“I think it was big for him because he was swimming a little bit learning the system,” Bowles said of Hurst’s practice Tuesday night.

Because of so many receivers, including Emeka Egbuka, Tez Johnson and Jalen McMillan nursing injuries, Hurst got a ton of reps and targets on the Bucs’ first team. And Bowles liked what he saw.

“To come down with the catches that he came down with [Tuesday night] looked like he was in college,” Bowles said. “His confidence is high and he’s learning every day, so it’s good to see him getting better.”

If Hurst’s head was spinning from the playbook as Bowles said, Joe can only imagine how good Hurst may be once he has the playbook down.

Joe figured there would be a learning curve for Hurst coming from Georgia State. But there’s not much of one.

  6. Buddha Says:

FTN network says he is a mediocre route runner with exceptional hands Stll they rate Buccaneers offense as top 10, offensive line top 5.

  7. Countrybrew Says:

He will get better and better as he learns the playbook, perfects his routs, and gets use to the speed of the NFL. He is facing much better talent compared to the small school so it will take some time to adjust. Until then we will be more than happy with him being consistent.

  8. Marine Buc Says:

    Nice.

I’m glad this guy looks good so far.

With J-Macs neck and Godwin’s past and 165 ILB Tez we will need another solid WR in 2026.

Means nothing until Sunday September 13th.

Let’s not start the swishing of the cheerleader Pom Poms just yet.

    Be a rookie WR

    Be WR4

Be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there

    Catch the ball

    Works for me!

  12. JimBobBuc Says:

Hurst looks good, but it’s easy to beat McCollum in the lower red zone.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

Ted has cooked Zyon a few times this camp…i dont think that bolds well for Zyon’s confidence

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. Obvious Says:

He’s going to have to play more than ppl think. You can 100% count on a couple of WRs getting hurt. Been that way for several years now.

With his skill set he doesn’t need ti learn too many routes. Just run what you do well and catch the ball. One of the knocks on him was that his hands were suspect….looks like he’s performing well in that department.

  15. jimmy Says:

boring really. it wasnt contested at all. wasnt a jump ball, wasnt a down field sprint. and it was against zzzzyon so

  16. Erik with Clean Athletics™ Says:

The solidity, reliability, and consistency of Godwin? But taller and faster?

Sounds like a guy who will be our best WR eventually.

  17. Todd Says:

The injured receivers need to be putting in time with Hurst on the playbook.

  18. Gofortheface30 Says:

I do like the idea of a TRUE X. He fits the profile of a stud outside x while Emeka is a move around Z guy and when they go triple Emeka can be slot while Jalen is outside. Thinking in future tense here. I think that’s a reason you get a bust because Godwin, Jalen, and Emeka is redundant. Gotta have one “just go up and get it” guy

Licht can draft o-lineman and WRs. Our room is stacked.

  20. Teacherman Says:

He looks like a skinny DK Metcalf.

I bet they share a common ancestor.

I’d rather have brain damage than wear those stupid looking helmet diapers. Have some self-respect, people.

You know, if you go back far enough, we all have the same ancestors… You know what I mean, brother…

2nd in FBS in contested catches last 2 years. 👍🏼

  24. SummerofGeorge Says:

Wake me up when he catches a pass in a regular season game.

Wanting him to be the next ME13 doesn’t make it so.

  25. Lou. Says:

Don’t know about the greatness of that catch. The play does raise more concern about Zyon.
