NFL Network: Bucs Haven’t Talked Contract Extension With Vita Vea

Vita Vea asked to be traded and it’s becoming increasingly clear why.
The Bucs’ manbeast defensive tackle didn’t have to make that big leap to request getting launched from Tampa. He could have had his hold-in/faux injury without asking out of town. Or he could have held out and, you know, posted workout videos from home on social media.
So why did Vea go to the trade-me extreme? Perhaps it’s because the Bucs have completely shunned his demands.
Vea wants a giant raise and he has no contract for next year. The Bucs, per NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport yesterday, have shown no legit interest in extending Vea’s contract.
“It certainly seems like he and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers really have not gotten off the ground with any talks of a possible extension. My understanding is they really didn’t go down the road at all to a possible extension,” Rapoport said.
As Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman has said many times, Vea will not succeed in pushing around Team Glazer and Jason Licht into a market-value contract this summer.
So how much is Vea willing to dig in? And is Licht willing to keep an unhappy player who is getting rustier by the day? Rapoport said “this one’s not quite over yet.”
Meanwhile, the trade market for Vea seems vibrant, with multiple teams ready to deal.
Joe has maintained a Vea trade could be a very smart move, though there’s no way Licht would trade Vea until he sees his other defensive tackles emerge from the preseason healthy.

Glazers know very well that the reality of firing a coach and GM after this season is staring them in the face so their thought process is putting the team salary cap in good order going into next season.
Glazers want to be able to hire the absolute best candidate available(probably McDermott) with no requirement that the new coach pinch pennies. It’s a bucs life.

This is smart move by Licht. Bucs should stay put until all DL players are healthy at the start of the season. Who knows, if another team has an injury, the VV market value might go up.

Like Todd^^ said. This seems like it’s all the Glazers. You can’t blame them either, they’re waiting to see the results from this season. But, if they’re not going to resign Vita now there’s no way he stays after the season is over. They need to just trade him and get what they can. This is a bad look on both parties time to cut bait and move along.

The Glazers are not doing anything this year.
Baker, Bowles and the boys flopped last year.
The defense was pathetic and Baker kept turning the ball over to lose games.
If we don’t play well this year, Licht, Bowles, Baker, Winfield, Vea and Zion are gone.
The Glazers are playing it smart. They are patient Gods.
They will give everyone one last chance this year.
Vea should realize he’s in a contract year at 31 years old. He should have come to camp and tried to be a pro bowler this year. Instead, he’s getting out of shape and putting himself at risk of injury.
Baker, Zion and Vea are all in prove it or lose it years.
The Glazers are smart. From à professional point of view, they are doing the right thing.

You got me curious with that Steven. According to Spotrac, Bucs average age (at the end of 2024) was 26.1 (7th youngest). Our average age at the end of last season (2025) rose to 26.6 (16th youngest … middle of the pack).
We won’t really know what our average age is this season until we cut-down to 53 players (most cut will be youngsters). Right now though (with 91 players) we’re tied with Saints for the 10th youngest team in the NFL this season (with 26.1 average age) but that’ll surely change for all teams once cut-downs to 53 occur). But since we’ve got so many guys age 30 or older (right now we’ve got 14 of them, and almost all will probably make the team), I would think that we’ll end up with an older team than what we had last season (26.6 average).
Scary thing is that most of those 30 & older are on 1-year contracts. JL’s gonna have a lot of negotiating to do come next year. Hmmm, maybe he should practice with Vea & Mayfield just to get the feel for it.

Teacherman, which would make the Glazers happy 1. Bowels, Baker and the Bucs repeat the 2025 season win a handful of of games and its blow it up and start over again or 2. Bucs win the division and go deep in the playoffs and those you listed are moving to other teams and you start all over again? It appears they are playing Texas Hold’em for number 1. From outside looking in, real change will only occur with complete change from top to bottom is needed and it should start with new oweners!

For the pay the guy crowed, you do know there is a salary cap. You can’t pay people with monopoly money.
The Bucs are going into 2027 season with 39 million in cap space with a buch of players that need to be signed.

Love it when players call a two year contract an insult. So ownership gives them their cherished three year deal which the same players call an insult after two.
BTW—I agree with George, but not his numbers. Most research outlets have the current Bucs at a little more than 8 million under the cap going into this 26’ season. If George knows where it will be going into 27’, when so much can happen between now and then, my hat’s off to his ability to foresee the future.
But his take on the “Pay the man” crowd is spot on. Seems these people know not of what they speak. Pay the man … with what? Do you follow NFL football or simply enjoy writing, PAY THE MAN?
The Bucs cannot print money and go over the cap.
The Glazers are not player cheap as they approach the cap max almost yearly. Conversely, they have no football sense as proven when they let Coen walk and kept Bowles. View that as you may as they would have had to pay two head coaches by promoting Coen and honoring the remainder of Todd’s deal.
But they are far from cheap when it comes to paying players.

Waiting to see if the other defensive tackles emerge from preseason healthy? What do they do if they go down in week one? That thinking is right up there with making a player who has already proved himself, prove it again. At which time, they sign him to the big extension and then he gets hurt. It doesn’t make any sense. Either Vita is vital to this defense or he’s not. If right now there are others on the team who can take his place, then trade him now and try to get a corner in return which is a position of need now. Maybe they’re just holding out for the best deal.

The prophecy is fulfilling itself. No real money will be spent this season, as Ive said since the end of last season. Once Bowles was retained the objective was clear. Now some of you are finally waking up.
Vita is a great player, its just unfortunate that the GM and HC wasted money on undeserving and oft-injured players in the past few years. The owners got ZERO ROI for all those millions spent and have handcuffed the GM. This team maxed out years ago and the Superbowl window left when Brady retired and when BA retired.

We have to remember that Jason is from New England Patriots. Historically, the Patriots have released or got rid of players when everybody else thought they still have value. On ESPN First Take, Mike T thought Vita will return to the field soon. I’m not so sure how soon, but I think he’ll play against Cincinnati.
Reacting to Baker’s comments, Louis Riddick thinks the Bucs will be over .500 with 10 wins. He really likes Bain and Keionte Scott, and commented that Bain always put in extra hours at Miami with Jason Taylor. Mike T thought that Kancey coming back will help the front 7.

This apparently has become a team of indecision. Nothing good can ever come from that mindset. Bowles has shown enough that there is no reason for uncertainty. Same with Baker, he’s shown enough that you’re either a believer or you’re not. No reason for uncertainty. If they don’t believe in him 100%, they should have tried to trade him. If they do truly believe in him, they should have signed him to a long term extension now. Same with Vita, they should have been trying to trade him since the draft and signings of Robinson and Roches.

The Bucs front office has never felt good about anyone making demands as opposed to negotiation in good faith. That would explain this. I think Vea seriously overplayed his hand and they put their foot down.

A trade to a new team would be on the hook for his non-guaranteed base salary for the 2026 season, but then there’s the matter of him wanting a raise which would also work against us in any trade scenario.

I’m guessing Rappaport talked to Vea’s agent and that’s it, so I’d take this news with a bit of salt. That said, the foot dragging on Vea and Baker certainly does not seem like a vote of confidence in the current regime and direction. Might as well unload the big money guys, maybe pick up a corner and amass some draft picks. Baker, Vea, Winfield, and Godwin. Zyon, too, if anyone will take him. Get Youngry!

I’m so glad that the Bucs are not sentimental like some of the comments I am hearing right now. I love Vita and Baker but both are over 30. Vea only last year started earning his money by playing more than 50% of the snaps on D. He does it one time and all of a sudden feels like he can get paid like a top player at his position?
Just like as with Baker, the Bucs want to see great play on a consistent basis not a one off.

It’s a major part of the problem with this current Bucs regime. Lazy, Weak, & Complacency with just barely being good enough to slip by and win a garbage Division. We would not be dealing with ANY of THIS right now, had we just followed “MY PLAN.” In a nutshell, we would’ve walked over flaming hot coals mixed with razor blades and jagged cut glass, to hire COEN. And, we would already moved OFF of Vea way before we’d gotten to this point, as I’ve stated on here over the past year and a half or two (as well as Godwin and MANY various other things)… And, drafted Deone Walker, in preparation for it (and the FUTURE). I mean, I had already planned on moving off of Vea, by this off-season at the LATEST. Just as I told those CCC D-Linemen almost 2-years ago. Bet they wished they’d ‘offed-him’ NOW, and shipped him WHEREVER. This FO has to be able to see these things, at least BEFORE “I” DO. And, they have to have THE GUTS to do it. But, NO… They are SO DESPERATE just trying to win a TRASH Division, that they stick with the status quo (same as their bosses, the Glazers). And it’s been all THEY CAN DO to just barely squeak by and DO THAT.
The next (crushing) thing they do will be to ‘extend’ BAKER LONGTERM, after a ‘slightly’ above average 9-8 season again, & when literally NO ONE ELSE would do so. Seriously, now think about it… If Baker does NOT have the season of HIS LIFE, do you really believe that TEAMS will be falling all over themselves to SIGN “BAKER” to a 3-year/$165-MIL DEAL, with $100-MIL Fully-Guaranteed… And, with THIS 2027 QB-Class, and when they can get ‘quality’ QB-play (with the right HC/OC/system) for PEANUTS!? There is NO WAY. It wouldn’t be logical. Especially, when EVERYONE LOVES BAKER, until it comes down to the ‘possibility’ of (their own) THAT TEAM having to PAY HIM. I mean, if he has ANOTHER “Baker Season” again this season, AND the Bucs (with JL and Bowles & Co.) are considering giving HIM that big 3-year extension… Then, they’d be REAL SMART to allow him to go out there and find his best offer AGAIN, just as they did during their last go around. Also, the dead cap isn’t a concrete figure because things can be done between now and the start of the ’27 league year that can add/lessen how much dead money the team will pay out.

So, explain HOW he does that by sitting OUT, when the Bucs will STILL own his rights going into NEXT season!? This season doesn’t just DISAPPEAR by sitting-out. There are just waaaayyy TOO MANY great young minds out there, in the modern day game, to continuously be wanting to run through these same old retreads. And, there will possibly be one or two others available, who aren’t even on the coaching vacancy list of yet, such as a Shane Steichen (top-5 most respected play-callers in the LEAGUE today – but with horrible ownership now, and was FORCED by Irsay to draft Richardson, when HE didn’t want him). And, Tomlin for sure would be one of the LAST you’d want for a rebuild and with trying to develop a young QB and offense with.

The NFL “game check” thing is ridiculous. Guys should be paid year round, which would mean right now a guy unwilling to practice would be losing money. The entire structure makes game day the only thing that matters, leaving teams with little to do but deal with this drama.
Even a $1M per game, if you think you should get a $15M raise, you can wait out almost the entire season and break even.
