Ex-Bucs QB Praises “Smooth” Practice

When former players attend training camp, they often scrutinize practice differently than the typical fan.
They’re looking for balls on the ground, body language, pace, and all kinds of minutiae.
Brad Johnson, the OG Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback, visited a Bucs practice last week. Joe shot the photo of him above. Johnson was a special guest on the sidelines and had a close-up view of the action.
From Joe’s experience, ex-players love to take a shot or two at what they witness. Johnson came away impressed.
He described the practice as “smooth from both sides of the ball,” during a chat with Rock Riley on WDAE radio yesterday.
“The amount of talent that they actually do have on that team is just fun to watch them compete,” Johnson added.
Johnson noted he had a brief chat with Baker Mayfield about his contract and, per Johnson, the two had some laughs about it.
Unfortunately, Johnson also said he was not in town for an invitation to the Buccaneers Ring of Honor. Why is Team Glazer waiting?

I thought it was reported there’d be no Ring Of Honor inductee this year?

Agree with Brad’s assessment regarding talent, in every critical position has depth – maybe newer players, but the talent depth has me scratching my head as to why the media is picking one of the other groups. I think It’s all based on 2025 performance and the lack of big name free agent acquisitions.
The offense lost Mike – and that X position is likely our biggest whole on offense. The line is healthy, but deep and experienced, the running backs are all similar, but Gaines really was a sneaky-good signing, the receivers are deep and multi-talented – but each is about the same size and look average. There are some special players but all of them could feel like they fill the same role. Ted Hurst is going to have to make some catches in the X role – and you’re not going to get a lot of mileage out of Godwin sending him on his crossing routes and drags. So we went from scary, to average, until Egbuka or JMac take another step. But overall the offense is still very balanced and deep.
Other than Bain, the defense didn’t add any big names, but they mostly addressed the front 7 and brought in players that can be better than what was there before them – the one area of concern for Bucs fans I’ve interacted with is CORNER. We really need a starter where Morrison is and no one knows if Zyon will finally step into the role we need from a veteran. Still hit & cold to many of our minds.
Like all teams, we have some holes, but overall I think Brad is right about the talent – starters and depth – means a lot.
Can the Bucs find an identity now that out Big X is gone? Can the front 7 and the ILB’s keep enough pressure of the corners?
Thats what we’re watching to see.
On to Cincinnati.

I domt think he should be in the ring of honor. He wasn’t here that long. He did win a superb owl which I rank far higher than seasons played but overall there is several players ie: Simeon Rice, Lavonte David, Hardy Nickerson, Paul Gruber. That should get in before Brad

Bucs sideline reporter? You don’t have to be loud to be good and they can come in all styles…
His intelligence and history of Bucs alone is a good starting place and that the guy still wants to be here and be around (even if not in ROH yet) a plus!

Rice and Gruber are already in; Lavonte is too new. Hardy is a good choice for sure. Not sure Johnson makes it. Loved him when he was here, but he was on a lot of teams and multiple after the Bucs. Maybe Lynch? Dunn?

Lynch made the ROH in 2016. Brad did well in the Super Bowl year but mostly his Bucs career was ‘okay’. As QB of a team with the most lethal defense in the NFL he had a pretty big margin for error.
The Bucs went 26-23 in his starts and he probably lost as many games with mistakes as he was responsible for helping win. He was still the best Bucs QB not named Doug Williams to that point, so I think fans have forgotten some of the negatives.

Not putting Lavonte in this year makes sense. I am 99.9999999999999% sure he won’t feel the itch around mid-season, but just in case……. .

Seems like if we were going to have a ROH inductee this year, we’d already know who it is.
For my money, it should be Deckerhoff, and (screw they order they’ve been going in) his name should be the first one on the west side of the stadium, just below the broadcast booth (which should be renamed in his honor).
