A Baker Mayfield Negotiations Mover?

Perhaps there is a new deadline on the Baker Mayfield contract extension front.
Mayfield says will not negotiating with the Bucs once training camp starts on July 29.
But what about next week? On July 14, Mayfield will be seen featured on the Netflix Quarterback reality series that focuses on Mayfield’s 2025 life on and off the field, along with the lives of quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Jayden Daniels and Cam Ward.
Longtime Entertainment Weekly writer/editor Dalton Ross already watched the series and says Mayfield is the runaway star.
While this writer grew up in Washington, D.C., and is therefore a die-hard Commanders fan, even I have to admit that Mayfield steals the season. There is an impressive number of juicy clips showing epic trash-talking from the master of the form, mixed in with tender family scenes (with wife Emily and daughter Kova) and a super fun bye-week trip to the New York City Marathon.
The Ross take intrigues Joe. It seems Mayfield’s Quarterback showcase will endear him to waves of fans nationwide and grow his stature in Tampa.
That won’t play in Team Glazer’s favor at the negotiating table. Conversely, it should help Mayfield to secure a better deal.
Mayfield’s three-year contract expires after the 2026 season. All it would take is true interest from one team other than the Bucs to skyrocket Mayfield’s value — if he has no contract locked when this season ends.

Honestly, I am surprised how many people seem to blame baker for last season when he literally played his heart out for the team. He succeeded with bench receivers, his third OC (that was didn’t seem ready for the job) and a makeshift offensive line and he played injured. Then when we had a chance to win the defense lost the most critical games…not Baker. Why do you think Evans left? I’d pay Baker $55M per season now before he returns to his 2024 stats and we have to pay him $65M per season. He’s a great leader and community figure, representing the toughness the Bucs have been known for. He played cheap for 3 years, show your team that you respect that and the culture he’s built. Pay the man.

A lot of posters here think we should ditch Baker and drafts one of those rookie quarterbacks next season. With our luck if we did that, we would end up with a Josh Rosen of the bunch. 🤣

Those folks who are dead set biased against Baker react to any post on this site the way I see buzzards react to dead animals as I go about my daily routine. Daily, they monitor this site seeking the Joes post about Baker, post their biased opinions (which is their right) and then slam those who disagree with them.
When Baker is good, Baker is good, but when Baker is bad, Baker is bad! It will be up to those with the money to determine if Baker’s good out ways the bad!

Baker’s good vastly outweighs the bad. Bad things happen to any QB when protection breaks down and everyone is injured (See Mahomes last season as another example so it’s not just Baker lack of protection affects).

If a Netflix series causes the Glazer kids to rethink their decision on what to pay Baker then they are ever dumber than I already assume.
He was just magical during that 2-7 championship run. Could have been 0-9 real easy. Not even Tom Brady is that skilled.

LM50, you are correct, for several reasons, one cannot compare Baker with Mahomes. First, Baker has never played for a HC with the ability of Andy Reed and probably the real reason, Mahomes has had 2 OC’s and Baker has had 9 OCs

You mean the Mahomes who led the Chiefs to 6-11 season. Who had players hurt, he played hurt but mustered 6 wins…. That Mahomes?
Baker beat Mahomes in college and if he landed with anyone other than the Browns he would be in a different carrer trajectory. I watch Mahomes every week and his play makes me puke, the luckiest guy in the world until the wheels fall off and he spins out a 6-11 record. He had to have the star power around him to make his trash work.

When you sign a contract, you honor it. At least that’s what honorable men do.
When it’s finished you are free to seek a raise or move on.
While your contract is being played out, and your boss sees a spectacular job performance, it’s not uncommon for the boss to give a bonus or a contract extension.
When you complete the second year of a three-year contract, and perform poorly, the last thing you do is seek a raise. If you did, most bosses would laugh in your face.
In a normal world, the employee should apologize for seeking a raise he does not deserve and tell his boss he is more than willing to honor the third year of his contract and prove he deserves that raise.
But the NFL is not a normal world. It’s a place where logic doesn’t exist and honorable men make dishonorable demands.

Last year was a tough one after the hot start.
We WERE on fire!
Lots of issues on both sides of the ball but Baker hung tough.
I’d be pissed if the Glazers don’t hold on to him but I can understand wanting to see how he bounces back this year.
I think he’s gonna be great.
His TB stats are pretty damn good and he’s a natural leader.
• Games: 123 (120 starts)
• Passing: 2,500/3,938 (63.5%), 28,525 yards, 197 TD, 101 INT, 91.2 rating
• Rushing: 366 att, 1,583 yards, 11 TD
• Record with Bucs: 27-24 (regular season).

It doesn’t matter one iota what any other team thinks Mayfield’s value is at the end of 2026 as long as the Bucs can franchise him for 2027 and even 2028 if they wish.

@ BucitList – NO. Wide-Receivers do NOT leave (“their” QB) over the DEFENSE. Period. And, if YOU couldn’t see his frustrations with BAKER HIMSELF, down the final stretch of the season, then you were BLIND. They definitely don’t take astronomically LESS MONEY, either. Baker has ALWAYS worn on teammates, and especially WR’s. Another thing, HE did not play for “CHEAP.” He took EVERY dime he could GET (just exactly as he will for this next go around). I just so happened that he outperformed it during the 2024 season. And, there was a VERY good reason for why HE got what HE GOT after his 2023 season… Which amounted to being basically, JUST a 2-YEAR DEAL, that the Bucs could very easily ‘walk away’ from if need be.

@ Teacherman – let’s just hope that it is BEFORE the trade-deadline, so that we can RELOAD in TALENT, through the ‘all-time’ LOADED 2027 Draft-Class. But, NOT a QB unless it’s one of the first two-picks. There are way too MANY other ultra-talented players at other very important positions who are ELITE (Jeremiah Smith for one), to risk REACHING for a Quarterback. You don’t want to WASTE at least 2-YEARS of his ‘rookie’ deal wit a depleted roster during a complete REBUILD. You get a “bridge” on the CHEAP (doesn’t matter who it is), because you are TANKING in 2028 anyway! Maybe, he turns into Darnold or whomever, and is a great for with our STUD new HC and GM. Regardless, you’ve already accumulated enough draft capital AND talent to make your move and POUNCE on your ‘rookie’ QB in either 2028 or 2029… Or, might not even have to for AWHILE, if your “bridge” is just KILLING-IT. The ONLY way you DRAFT a QB in 2027, is IF you believe he is a can’t miss ‘generational’ TALENT. And, you can definitely EXTEND BOTH Mauch AND YaYa, if they have big seasons… Cause, they are both still young enough, to fit the current ‘timeline’ trajectory of our rebuild. So, you don’t move THEM. McCollum still has A LOT of work to do if HE’s to even have ANY value whatsoever… Hopefully, he has a good season and does. And, then we can move HIM, TOO!!!! Load up on draft capital, clear up as MUCH cap space as POSSIBLE, and get it MOVIN. A couple of great drafts and 2028 and 2029 free agency periods (with a new modern day young stud HC and ‘aggressive’ modern GM), & we are OFF TO THE RACES. We can get real good in a HURRY!!!!

@ BucsfaninOregon – We’ll keep as few as POSSIBLE, if we are smart. Except for the young guys, who will fit the ‘timeline’ of a complete tear down. You accumulate AS MUCH draft capital as humanly possible, AND you clear as much CAP SPACE as you can. Your brand new HC and GM will rebuild the team, in the way that THEY WANT IT. You have an absolute clean slate to LOAD TF UP HARD ON during the 2028 & 2029 Free Agency Classes, to ‘mix-in’ with your YOUNG and HUNGRY, EXPLOSIVE “ELITE” TALENT, that you have STOCKPILED through the DRAFT. You don’t keep ANYONE who is OLD and EXPENSIVE. Outside of Wirfs, but that’s IT. And, who knows for how much longer HE will even want to PLAY past 30!? He’s said before, only “10-years.”

And, that is exactly what the Bucs FO is doing, at THIS POINT. “Laughing in his face.” They committed to HIM AGAIN, with a more than fair deal. Just exactly like they did during the last go around… Based entirely, off of HIS PLAY. It’s pretty simple. It’s amazing that a true “Bucs Fan” would be BEGGING FOR The Bucs To PAY MORE. It’s only for their own weak little insecure EGOS… It has to be for 4-YEARS+ and $50-MIL+ or ELSE. Or, their egos JUST CAN’T DEAL. It’s SO PATHETIC. He’s their widdle Bakey-Bake, now… They jus wuvs hims sooooo MUCH. It’s all FANTASY. Weird Stuff.

While I don’t disagree with a lot of the concepts, you do realize it’s the Glazers and Licht you’re expecting to begin this grand rebuild process. They certainly don’t have your vision or courage. The only game in three seasons where I saw Mayfield totally suck and deserve the lion’s share of the responsibility for a loss was last year’s Dolphins game.
Brady was horrific in the 38-3 blowout loss to the Saints in 2020 as well as the 35-7 spanking the 49ers gave the Bucs in 2022.
Josh Allen’s terrible game against the Falcons in 2022 where he threw zero TDs and three interceptions netted him an abysmal passer rating of 17.0 (a game the Bills actually won due to their ground game).
Last season, Patrick Mahomes had a pitiful 19.8 passer rating against the Texans, throwing three interceptions and zero touchdowns.
(Just for context, throwing the ball into the dirt on every single play nets a baseline NFL passer rating of 39.6).
In other words, all QBs have the occasional real stinker of a game.
All other games, there were multiple culprits responsible for a loss. It’s easy to focus on the guy you hate, though, given he is the player who touches the ball more than anyone other than the center.

@ Badbucs – That’s what I’ve said numerous times. IF as long as the Glazers have the balls to do WHAT’S RIGHT, versus trying to SAVE Lickt & Bowles’ JOBS. When we are sitting there at 2-6 or 3-5 heading TO Chicago, before the Bye-Week. No ‘delusions’ of this late season ‘win streak’ to just barely win the division and another 1st-Round exit. If they don’t do it… I. AM. DONE.

Browns fan. Cleveland gave Baker everything he the best offensive line in the league at that time. He had a top 10 defense with 2 good runningbacks Nick Chubb in his prime with Kareem Hunt. He had good receivers and 2 good tight ends and he still couldn’t get to a conference championship game. And to compare Baker to Mahomes is just insane only Baker fan boys and his family would say something like that.
