Report: Buccaneers Believe Baker Mayfield Will Take Their Best Offer Before Training Camp

June 17th, 2026

Over the next six weeks, would Baker Mayfield dare to turn down roughly $100 million guaranteed as part of a Bucs contract extension?

Perhaps as part of a three-year, $150 million deal through the 2029 season?

Joe can’t imagine gambling that kind of cash — only to battle and in hopes of staying healthy to earn an extra 10 or 20 percent as a result of a strong 2026 season. There’s just too much at stake.

And that could be the scenario facing Mayfield.

In a report this afternoon on PFTNBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio, the ProFootballTalk.com founder, said he’s hearing the Bucs are very confident a deal will get done before training camp kicks off July 30.

“My understanding is the Buccaneers believe [Mayfield] will take their best offer before [training] camp opens,” Florio said. “That’s Step 1. Whatever their best offer is before camp opens, he’ll take it. That’s what I believe the Bucs believe, based upon the people I’ve talked to.”

That wouldn not be surprising. Mayfield doesn’t have a lot of leverage, and if he really loves Tampa like he says he does, he’ll sign a fair extension.

The Joe typing here has been barking on the Ira Kaufman Podcast since Thanksgiving that Mayfield would have a contract extension done before opening day of the 2026 season. It just makes too much sense, especially considering it seems like Team Glazer has little interest in rebuilding.

With no income tax in Florida and the Bucs having a strong commitment to their offensive line, Mayfield would need some unpredictable motivation to want to leave town. But considering Mike Evans did just that, nothing is off the table.

3year deal with an out after the 2027 season aint bad…45-47mil per year…take it or leave it baker

    GO BUCS!!!!

  2. Teacherman Says:

He’s 30. He can’t expect à 5 year deal. Especially with his injury history and style of play.

I wish the Bucs would meet him at 3 years. 150 million. Fully guaranteed. A Kirk Cousins type contract.

100 million signing bonus. Frees up cap space for the next 3 years.

Vita Vea also needs a new deal. He’s a top priority. He also needs a 3 year deal.

So we have a 3 year window to really make some things happen.

    Go Bucs!

  3. Jimmy Says:

    Bye Vita.

He’s going to want @ least what Tua and Goldilocks are getting.

  6. BucsFan81 Says:

I think he gets 50 million per year 4 years 200 million but only the first 2 years will be guaranteed so the Bucs can get out the contract if things don’t work out after 2 years.

  7. Bee Says:

In other words, the Bucs offer is their final offer and a counter offer won’t be acknowledged. So the Bucs gave Mayfield an offer they know he’ll refuse. He’ll more than likely bet on himself and do what he does best and lose. If its a 3 year deal, then its probably one guaranteed year with 2 team option years. That contract probably has tons of incentives that need to be reached to get the total amount.

Interestingly, Evans took less money to play with a “contender”, do you think Baker would do the same thing?

  8. Warrenfb12 Says:

Didn’t they think they had Mike on lock down?

  9. Football 1 Says:

I don’t see Baked leaving if treated fairly. ME was or is on a small window to get to the SB. I believe many of us including at least 1 Joe and Ira that the Bucs window fir wins is between 7-9. That is not enough for a SB or maybe the division. The Bucs just have to many question mark , which they are waiting before moving forward.
However Baker has a bigger window and if the Bucs continue to rebuild the defense a deep run in the playoffs is possible say year after next. Baker by what I have seen is in the 50 million range. So if the Bucs give him that and 3 years he will sign.

  10. JustVisiting Says:

I’d like to see a contract fully guaranteed except for injuries. Baker has earned the recognition that he’ll give 100% every game. It’s “only” his health/durability that are in doubt.

Anyone who thinks he gets less than $50 mil is out of their mind

  13. Stpetematt Says:

This is a more than 7-9 win football team if uninjured. More like 10-13. If we get severe injuries to the offensive line again we are in big trouble again. With this line healthy, we should be able to run at will against any football team. That’s enough to dramatically improve every facet of the offense. If the defense improves as expected, we can go far into the playoffs too.

  14. MelvinJunior Says:

I believe he will, too! I’ve been saying it all along, that HE would be “real smart” to do so. Since, he really has no other choice than to do so. The Bucs are comfortably in the driver’s seats here. And, that is WHY I would NOT offer HIM a deal, that is anywhere even CLOSE to what HE is expecting. Because, it just doesn’t make ANY SENSE. I’m 💯 playing-out this season FIRST. And, all these Baker Bois should be DEMANDING that Baker take the deal NOW, since it’s been “THEY” for the entire time, who have said all along, that Baker WILL TAKE A “DISCOUNT.” That, HE just loves playing BALL, and loves Tampa Bay just soooo MUCH. LoL

  15. MelvinJunior Says:

@ BucVoyager Says: “Anyone who thinks he gets less than $50 mil is out of their mind.”

It’s more about the number of YEARS, than it is anything else. And, the Bucs have ALL the LEVERAGE. So, WHY would “YOU” even want them to PAY over $50-MILLION PER!? I mean, that makes as much sense, as it does the Bucs even offering THAT MUCH right now. Especially, given HIS PLAY. I don’t understand WHY anyone would not want or expect the BUCS to get the best deal possible. It makes NO SENSE whatsoever.

  16. Saskbucs Says:

He certainly isn’t taking less than 50. I put mid to high 40s out there previously as something he should do for team building but after the report saying they aren’t close, that went out the window.

Bucs will offer $53-$54 million per for 3 more years. Huge risk not to take it and no one should have to a problem with him getting Tua/Goff money.

The leverage or potential discontent from the player side has to do with coaching. Evans just walked in part because of that and I don’t just mean Bowles, revolving door at OC is not something these guys like.

HC on the hot seat and may be looking at your 5th OC in 5 years if you are Baker. That’s ridiculous.

Mayfield would need some unpredictable motivation to want to leave town

Right now, the Texans are hesitant to extend CJ Stroud, whose contract expires after 2027.
Mayfield is from Texas and the opportunity of becoming the Texans’ QB could be in the agent negotiation play.
The Bucs obviously want to sign Mayfield, but how high will they go in salary?

  23. zzbucs Says:

I wont give him that amount of money now…..

What if he performs like last year?

I would take the risk, and see first, then I would make him an offer in case he has a good year…..

Repeat I will take the risk of him getting mad and move to another team, let’s say the Steelers next year.

I think he is a good QB nothing special……

  24. DBS Says:

LOL. Here they come. I Knew and said this is how it would happen. No in fact these people said and at some point guaranteed he wouldn’t even get a contract. Let’s see if they go running for their mothers basement if he signs it.

  25. MelvinJunior Says:

The reason for why I have been saying that a 3yr/$130-$135 MILLION deal, with about $85-MIL fully guaranteed, makes the most sense for the BUCS, is because by offering him $100-MIL fully guaranteed at $50-MIL PER, is just not a big enough of a discount or difference than if they were to just use the ‘franchise tag’ on a year to year basis. It’s NOT going to increase that much over the next year or two, that would be enough to sway them to risk the deal NOW, upfront. The ONLY real benefit of basically offering him the ‘tag-money’ NOW, is to be able to help with ‘manipulating’ the CAP. Though, I believe this current Bucs team is soooo FAR AWAY from being a true legit Contender, that I don’t even WANT TO push another SINGLE PENNY into future seasons. I said the other day, that IF the Bucs were desperate enough for a DEAL (though “I” wouldn’t be), then they could offer the $100-MIL Guaranteed. BUT, the money part of it STILL needs to be a lot more in that $135-MILLION range. And, that Baker should JUMP to accept THAT 💯, in a HEARTBEAT. Otherwise, I can’t see why the Bucs wouldn’t benefit most by just handling BAKER on a season-to-seasons basis, for right now. You let him play-out this season FIRST. It has to be ‘worth it’ for The Bucs, and it has to MAKE SENSE.

  26. Boge Says:

If this happens it’s typical Tampa Bay. Don’t pay one of the best NT in the game but sign an injury prone qb who hasn’t shown he can lead this team to success right before a loaded QB draft class. This is what the franchise tag is for. Or is this because ownership has no faith in Jason to draft a qb?

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BucsFan81 Says:
“I think he gets 50 million per year 4 years 200 million but only the first 2 years will be guaranteed so the Bucs can get out the contract if things don’t work out after 2 years.”

This will probably be the deal.

That way next year is guaranteed in case the Bucs get a new Head Coach. That’s probably Mayfield’s biggest demand.

  28. bakerfan Says:

You people are NUTS…. Vita Vea has leverage by “holding in” but Baker doesn’t.

  29. bakerfan Says:

Melvin Jr. is having conversation with himself again, please medicate Melvin

  30. Bye Baker Bye Bowles Says:

Lol, you guy’s taking a victory lap and its far from a done deal. He’s not going to get a new deal. The team is giving itself a exit ramp for 2027 and a possible new HC is not going to want Baker. If they were all in on Baker, he would have got a deal prior to free agency and took a agressive approach to frree agency.

You guys know even if he gets a new deal (he wont) he will still be judged on a season by season basis. He doesnt have the cache to be retained thru multiple Hcs or a bad season. His first bad season , he’s getting canned.Tampa has ALL the leverage. Baker is small, limited and aging with a unsustainable game.

Mahomes can have a bad and loosing season and get a extension, not baker who is about 6 months older then mahomes. Jones is 6-5″ and had a better season then Baker last year in a much, much, tougher division. Forget popularity and brand, some GMS wouls take Jones over Baker.

You guys focus on Tua (who actually is 12 games over.500 for his career), cousins and Watson plus Murray but ignore Darnolds deal last year. You ignore rookie contracts. Love nd lawrence are first round picks on their ORIGINAL teams who are 26&27 years old. Lawrence stats from 2021-2025 (when he came into the leauge) compared to bakers from 2021-2025 are eerily similar, even down to the W-L records and some stats and areas Lawrence has a advantage.

Baker knows life as a bridge/backup begins as soon as he leaves tampa. Nobody is rushing to pay baker 50m a year lol.He doesnt produce as much as goff, not even close. he doesnt even win like Hurts or Purdy. Im still trying to figure out how Baker having losing seasons and missing the playoffs is better then Dak getting to the playoffs and losing inthe first round.

I agree, dak is a carmelo Anthony, tracy Mcgrady type-lack of post season winning limits how you view him but in what universe is baker as good as Dak?Its not even close. So you guys priase baker for having post season wins compared to a guy like herbert having zero. Thats fine. But then you have to acknowledge the post season sucess of hurts, Purdy and Goff, Stround and the fact Jordan Love has as many playoff wins in 3 years as baker has in 8.

Bad news baker fans, baker and bowles are tied at the hip. Those 10-12,13 wins you guys predict (lol) will means Tb is back. But if the season goes south, both will be gone. Forget “reports” and verbal boquets. look at actions. Very pasive free agency for a team witha “franchise(lol) Qb.

  31. LynchMob50 Says:

At this point you do not have to offer him a $50 mil + per year deal.

Every time he balks, lower the price until he refuses to play.

Then put him on the trading block. Maybe fetch some good picks.

Send Baker off to disappoint another fan base.

He’ll never see the SB. Unless he buys a ticket.

  32. Bye Baker Bye Bowles Says:

We need actions and not reports and all that jazz. Put up or shut up. If they were “all in” they would have signed baker to a extension PRIOR to free agency and had a agressive approach to free agency. They gave themselves a exit ramp for 2027. A new HC is not going to want a 32 year old, inacurate, limited journeyman who plays panic ball at 50m and cant operate from the pocket, Watch.Forget May headlines.

  33. Bucswin? Says:

50 mil? Deal. Where do i sign? Go Bucs

  34. Show Me Your TDs Says:

There’s no way that Baker leaves for a contender. Once he arrives, that team is no longer a contender.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Any Baker extension should come with a Bowles extension as well since the two are tied at the hip.

If Baker has a good 2026, then it means the Bucs are winning, and Bowles is safe.

If Baker stinks in 2026 and the Bucs are losing, who exactly are you replacing Bowles with, when Baker is on a big money deal and is coming off back to back years of getting his offensive staff fired, and then getting the entire coaching staff fired?

Again, literally no reason to extend Baker before we see how 2026 goes. If Baker returns to form – fantastic, you then do an extension. If Baker stinks, well, as I said above, everyone is getting fired, and the new coach can decide if they want to put their future in Baker’s hands.

  36. Okiejim Says:

LM50, never say never, always leave yourself an escape plan or never might come back to bite you! As for Baker, to sign or not sign is the beginning of the end of contract negotiations of which neither side should have involved the media period. Both sides a playing a little “bull poker”with either Baker taking the Bucs deep into the playoffs or Baker falling deep into the trench of negative play worst than 2025. Either way it’s bye to Baker after this season!

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Licht has blown his chance to get a cheap deal – he insulted the Baker, and now he’s gonna pay.

$85M a year on a 10-year deal or Baker shuts down the kitchen.

  38. Wyoming Joe Says:

Do the Anti-Baker Boi(s) think Mayfield will jump at 45M for 2-3 years? HOW LAUGHABLE! That would just pizz him off, and then he’ll bet on himself in 2026 without an extension. Then after putting up 2024 numbers, he’ll take the Bucs on a long run in the playoffs, setting up a 57-60M deal for three more years. That is IF HE DOESN’T jump to another team.

  39. Bye Baker Bye Bowles Says:

Read between the lines. baker would have got a extension BEFORE free agency and they would not have had a subtle approach to free agency. Clearly they are giving themselves a exit ramp for 2027 with a new HC&Qb.

This gullible fan base fails to realize every fanbase of these 7-10/8-9 teams(and there is alot of them) playing the “we should have won this game and this one” and looking at how much they improved in the draft figuring the team will just logically get better.

What you guys dont account for is the games you won that you should have lost. 12 and 13 wins? With baker mayfeild? come on. LOL.

  40. 3.28.Evans Says:

Baker saw the same collapse that Mike did. Of course, Baker was a big reason for the collapse, he was horrible down the stretch. Why on earth do you extend a regressing QB who occasionally gets hot. He’s actually more like Ryan Fitzpatrick than anyone else.

  41. Todd Says:

OMG Lichtbrain don’t do it , think about the Zyon mistake and magnify it by 10.

  42. LynchMob50 Says:

“$85M a year on a 10-year deal or Baker shuts down the kitchen.”

The Baker Boi Pom Pom brigade would love that.

Especially the doormatt who declares Baker has the highest playoff completion rate.

  43. Obvious Says:

I can’t name one veteran head coach (McDermott, etc) or upcoming HC candidate (David Webb, etc) that would not love to have a veteran qb as solid/good as baker mayfield. Not having to start with a rookie qb while also having the flexibility to draft a rookie qb of their own is the best scenario to be in. Like Andy Reid ten years ago.

I type that because the only way mayfield and Bowles are tied together is if 7, 8 or 9 wins is again acceptable to the glazers.

Normally when a coach dumps his entire staff the next logical step is that the HC is next on the block. Anything less than winning the division and getting the home playoff revenue and Todd’s gone. What happens with mayfield has no bearing.

  44. MelvinJunior Says:

JustVisiting Says: “I’d like to see a contract fully guaranteed except for injuries. Baker has earned the recognition that he’ll give 100% every game. It’s “only” his health/durability that are in doubt.”

That makes ZERO SENSE. Now, why would “YOU” want HIM to get a fully guaranteed contract… Are not you a BUCS Fan!? Fully-Guaranteed!? And, EARNED!? It’s not about “earning.” It’s about how you PROJECT HIM longterm, from this point moving FORWARD. The very LAST thing you want to do as a team AND FRANCHISE, is to PAY FOR what a player has done in THE PAST. It is a recipe for complete, total FAILURE. Just THINK. How many times have you seen other teams do this… THINK NY YANKEES as the most obvious examples, but it happens EVERYDAY. It’s what gets GM’s FIRED. But, again, WHO are you rooting for and are a “FAN” of… The BUCS or BAKER!? Are YOU more concerned about the BUCS getting the best deal possible, or BAKER!?

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Has anyone done a meme where you replace Al Bundy with Baker, and have him saying, “I once was week 6 MVP…”

  46. Beeej Says:

I’m with Melvin on the ‘years’ thing, I bet Baker wants 4+.

NOT so much the $35 mil per year thing lol. There are qb’s making 50+ who are clearly inferior to Baker. I doubt he could stand signing that deal

  47. Bye Baker Bye Bowles Says:

The saints had one less loss then us with 2 qbs i never heard of that COMBINED for 2M in salary. Bryce Young won te division and made a total of about 4M for 2025. 50M is not a drop in the bucket nor is it cheap. If your looking at the “bad deals” you must consider the good ones like Darnolds. Also, the rookie contract is a alternative.

The Glazers are just trying to get into the playoffs and “see what happens” until it capsizes is antiquated and outdated. Look for a Qb when you go 3-14? I got some bad news. this team is closer to having a top 5 pick then being in the title game.

Would going 8-9/9-8 and winning this division and getting bounced i the first round really make anyone feel good? And yes, it will be one and done “IF” they get in. Its not too many times your facing teams going into the playoffs facing a team that lost 5/6. Well Baker did in cleveland-the 2020 Steelers. One guy can only have so much good fortune.

  48. Kenton Smith Says:

Rod Munchesonthingsfortheheckofit. He has been a week 18 winner every year since being here. It seems like he likes the late games more than the earlier games. Except opening games. Any player knows that opening day the dawgs come out. He has also been a week 1 winner every year since being here. Playoff record setter. America gets to watch him 3 nights this year- believe me, America tunes in to watch some Mayfield. Mayfield’s life has had alot of highlights Rod. “I once was week 6 MVP…” is so very, very, far down on our QBs list of accomplishments.

  49. MelvinJunior Says:

There is no rule that you have to DRAFT (or start) a ‘rookie’ Quarterback. You want to have a STRONG ROSTER first, before throwing your young Quarterback while on his ‘rookie’ deal, out to the wolves. It always RUINS THEM, and then gets everyone fired. AND, you just WASTED all of the ‘advantages’ of having him on his ‘rookie’ deal, in the first place. The whole point of building your roster with YOUNG TALENT (mixed with some veteran FA pieces to plug some holes with), while having your young ‘franchise’ QB on the CHEAP, is when the time comes to PAY all that young talent… You have the flexibility to do so. And, it frees up even MORE MONEY for free agency. But, that is the best way for sustained success, and in order to be a ‘legit’ CONTENDER year in and year out (with the right HC and GM already set in place).

Sometimes, you just have to get BAD FIRST. I know these owners are SCARED TO DEATH of that, though. It’s because, THEY THEMSELVES, don’t know what the hell they’re DOING. If they did, and also had the first clue on even WHO to hire, then they wouldn’t be. Another thing, THEY LOVE having Todd Bowles (and prob JL) on the CHEAP. So, that is another problem… They’re not going to be willing to PAY FOR a ‘top-tier’ level, young HC. Even, IF they knew HOW to identify WHO that person could be. So, they’re good with mediocrity, and keeping you people FOOLED. Actually, they are seriously PRAYING for mediocrity, right now! 💯. So, that way they won’t have to DO a damn thing, and then just stick with the same old, same old status quo. They don’t have the first clue, and they are pinching pennies. EVERY LAST PENNY they can. While, having their hands out to taxpayers, and trying to screw over the RAYS. When, the “RAYS OWNERS” are truly doing everything THEY CAN to actually INVEST (BILLIONS- potentially up to $10-BIL+) into the city AND county. While, Bucs Owners are Scumbags. Straight up LEACHES.

  50. MelvinJunior Says:

bakerfan Says: “You people are NUTS…. Vita Vea has leverage by “holding in” but Baker doesn’t.”

ABSOLUTELY. 💯. “Sitting-In” is NOT the same thing as “Sitting-OUT.” YOU SAID, that Baker should “sit-out” THE SEASON. They are both, two entirely different things. Vea will be there come Week-1 regardless, BUT if the Bucs want to get him to ‘practice’ then they can either, just guarantee him some money for THIS season, (&/or) offer him an additional 1-year extension, with some guaranteed cash. Again, he’s NOT sitting-OUT. He has about 17-18 MILLION REASONS to be right there where he’s supposed to be when it come Week-1. Baker is NOT in the same situation as Vea is in. AGAIN, there is something called “The DETAILS.” These things don’t just happen in a vacuum. Everyone’s situation is DIFFERENT. Just because ONE player ‘sits-in’ or ‘sits-out’ doesn’t mean that someone else should do the same. There are MANY ‘different’ FACTORS that play a roll in EVERY negotiation (or policy decisions in politics). It’s actually unbelievable, that YOU are so incapable of comprehending any of this.

  51. Ex-Browns02 Says:

If what Florio says is true, I don’t think that the Bucs have made their best offer yet.

All we know about the current negotiations came from Mayfield himself — “…we’re not even close….”

  52. Sal Volatile Says:

Joe Says; Over the next six weeks, would Baker Mayfield dare to turn down roughly $100 million guaranteed as part of a Bucs contract extension?

Perhaps as part of a three-year, $150 million deal through the 2029 season?
    ^^^^^
Like I’ve said all along it’s about the duration more than the money.
I believe he’ll take the 50M that’s fair with 100M guaranteed. Knowing he has 4 years here rather than 2 or 3 is what he needs to hear. Take it if offered Baker and make the fans proud. That’s what it will take for me to stay as a fan.

Rod Munch and 3.28.Evans. You guys got me there for sure. I deserved it and I got it. That’s funny as hell. Thanks for that.

Sorry, but anyone with a modicum of math knowledge realizes that no income tax in Florida is a pretty lame reason for choosing the Bucs.

First of all, Florida is not the only state with no income tax. Secondly, most states are somewhere in the 5% range, meaning the tax would be around $2.5 million/ year – something that can easily be mitigated by paying him an extra $3 million above what the Bucs offer.

And still, no alternatives offered by the Baker haters except “cross your fingers and hope there is something better late in the draft.”
