Baker Mayfield Under Duress
June 23rd, 2026There is only one conclusion Joe can reach armed with these stats and knowing how poorly Baker Mayfield played after the bye last year.
He was hurt.
As we all know, Mayfield was a legit candidate for Offensive Player of the Year for putting the Bucs on his back as the team jumped out to a 6-2 record last season.
Then came the bye. As good as Mayfield was before the bye, he was that mediocre after it – at best.
Why?
Well, the shambles that was the Bucs’ offensive line did Mayfield in, Joe thought. The line led to Mayfield getting beat up.
Not so fast.
Per Tony Holzman-Escareno, a senior researcher with the NFL Mayfield was one of the best quarterbacks in the league last year when under pressure, per NextGen Stats. Only two quarterbacks (Drake Maye and Justin Herbert) produced more first downs and touchdowns (a touchdown also is considered a first down) than Mayfield when pressured
What happens when an offensive line is ravaged by injuries? The quarterback usually faces pressure. But per NextGen Stats, Mayfield did very well under pressure.
So what happened with Mayfield? After reading Holzman-Escareno’s research, it’s clear to Joe Mayfield was too hurt later in the season to consistently make enough plays for the Bucs to win.

Every year he is up and down. I think the lack of a healthy Evans as a reliable escape plan that he can see and can throw it up to was harder on him than any other excuse. No Evans this year has me a bit worried as he also took up the majority of the double teams which made the rest of the receiving core look better.
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:25 am
Obviously.
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:26 am
Excuses, excuses and more excuses. Was Mayfield hurt during the WC game in 2024 when the offense couldn’t score over 20 points at home versus a defense that gave up 35 ppg in the playoffs? Theres always a reason why its not his fault.
When Mayfield plays the exact same way or worse this season while being healthy as an ox, I’m curious to what excuses yall will come up then.
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:32 am
Would be nice to see the number of TDs or first downs under pressure before the bye and the number after the bye.
They should be roughly equal if not slightly more after the bye since there was one more game after the bye than before it.
Of course, the teams played are totally different before and after so like most stats, it may be meaningless. I do know that the Bucs faced much better defenses down the stretch.
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:32 am
I think most people aren’t accounting for how terrible the o line was last season and how bad the WRs were as well… Many times it wasn’t just baker having to run around like a chicken with his head cut off…. There was also simply no one open… No one making plays. So many drops. Evans looked like he needed to retire. Egbika looked like he should be undrafted. Godwin was running like a 4.8. And c’mon, tez Johnson?
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:40 am
Injuries killed the Bucs season 😪 last year. It’s looking like 2026 is a rebound year.
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:42 am
Actually, I just calculated it out. The teams the Bucs played the second half actually gave up one more point per game than the teams in the first half, on average.
My bad!
June 23rd, 2026 at 6:47 am
CLEARLY, he forgot how to play after the bye and lost all his skills
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:30 am
The Bucs need to consider injury risk/reward/talent/cap constraints when negotiating with Mayfield.
Mayfield is not going to win a Super Bowl for the Bucs like a Brady or Mahomes would.
The contract offer should be reasonable re: guaranteed money $100 million/3 years or less and bonuses for making playoffs, winning in playoffs and making pro bowl, etc.
$150 million guaranteed would guarantee cap hell in 2-3 years which is about all Mayfield has left the way he plays.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:32 am
Bee, the average number of offensive possessions per game is just under 10, the bucs had 6 in the playoff game, scoring 20 points in only 6 possessions is actually pretty good. Simple math is that if they had an average number of possessions, they score over 30.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:35 am
5-2 with a negative point differential then the 20-3 thriller vs the Saints. Statues off 3-0 beating teams that were a combined 1-8 by a TOTAL of 6 points. After 3 games bake bake was 61/99 for 615 yards. He didn’t t have any turnovers. I’ll give him that. After the Atlanta game he said ” ugly wins count”. So we forgetting the first half vs the Eagles -12/21 for 65 yards,0td and 1 int, down 24-6? The Lions game when he had under 50 yards at half? We got a defensive TD I that Jets come from behind win. Oh well it must have been that defense -19rh on yards and 20th in points allowed. Happy .Kenton? Our offense -21st in yards and 18th in scoring was electric. Actually better then it was in 2023 statistically. I feel there are going to be A LOT of excuses this year. We’ll see.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:39 am
5-2 going into the Saints game with a negative point differential and a offense ranked in the 20s-yards AND points Kenton. Then beat the Saints 20-3 in a thriller. Started off 3-0 by a TOTAL of 6 points against teams that were a combined 1-8. First half Philly,65 yards on 21 attempts, down 24-6. Under 50 yards first half vs Detroit. Lost 24-9. Needed 50 attempts for 228 yards lol. First 3 games :61/99 for 615 yards. Yep, early MVP!
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:47 am
They tried to lower the MVP bar for him. First 3 games he was 61/99 for 615 yards and the offense was in the 20s. In points AND yards Kenton. Team was 5-2 with a negative point differential and then best the Saints 20-3 to go to 6-2. More excuses loading for 2026!!
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:49 am
5-2 with a negative point differential. Then beat the to Saints 20-3. 2026 is going to be funny.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:51 am
5-2 with a negative point differential. Beat the Saints to go to 6-2. Yep, MVP. LOL. 2026 is going to be gooood.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:51 am
I’m just going to copy and paste these excuses for 2026..
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:55 am
Todd doomed our season. If Bowles benched Mayfield the week after the bye we would had a better chance of winning the division with a healthier Baker down the stretch. SMH
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:55 am
I for one am actually very happy that Baker Mayfield is the quarterback of my beloved Bucs. I recall post Brady, the Bucs were cashed strapped, they did not have a viable NFL quarterback on the roster, the NFL landscape of available quarterbacks was a veritable scrap heap of never was and never will be quarterbacks and the Bucs had the 19th pick in the draft…not an ideal slot for picking a franchise quarterback. We are very fortunate to have Baker Mayfield as the quarterback of this team.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:58 am
I would like to think the lousy season was due to injuries. Im sure it was more but its over. Get him before camp. If not, there will be distractions. Baker would probably be the only guy not bothered by this, but he’s human.
June 23rd, 2026 at 7:59 am
Coltol, Yes, the commanders converted 90% of their 3rd down conversions and freaking 100% of their 4th down. Time of possession Commanders 36:00 Bucs 24:00. They ran the ball up and down the field. Mayfield barely touched the ball the entire game. That is what you call cherry picking stats!!
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:02 am
Joe, what happened was that instead of sliding like normal quarterbacks, Mayfield thinks he’s the second coming of Mike Alstott and tries to truck safetys and linebackers. His injuries didn’t come from being sacked. They came down the field from him refusing to run out of bounds or slide.
His selfish ego led to the team’s demise last season. Not only is he wreckless with his body, when he’s hurt, his ego won’t allow him to sit a couple of games to heal. That’s the main reason the Bucs are not seeming too eager to get him signed. That is a real issue that has hurt the team 2 out of his 3 seasons here.
Apparently it was an issue in Cleveland because I’ve heard excuses from his followers that he had an injured shoulder in Cleveland. It’s not heroic to play through an injury when you’re dragging the team down. Its selfisn and idiotic, especially the way he gets injured.
Even Mike Evans used to hit the dirt to avoid getting hit. But not Macho Man Mayfield.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:07 am
We were 5-2 with a negative point differential. Beat the Saints 20-3 to go to 6-2. Offense was ranked in the 20s. Points and yards Kenton. Copy and paste excuses for 2026.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:10 am
OPOY?MVP? We were 5-2 with a negative point differential and a offense ranked in the 20s on points AND yards Kenton. Excuses are loading up for 2026 already.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:13 am
Alanbucsfan. “Mayfield is not going to win a Super Bowl for the Bucs”. Now, now Alanbucsfan. Is Purdy going to? How about Josh Allen? Or Lamar? Maybe Joe Burrow? Surely Caleb Williams and Jaden Daniels will. Jordan Love- what about him and Trevor Lawrence, Alanbucsfan? I’m thinking Drake Maye has one in him, but not before Dak Prescott gets his, am I right, Alanbucsfan. Please, do tell. Twit.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:15 am
So when he fumbled on the jet sweep? Or, he was outplayed all year and that game by a rookie who kicked his tail and finished higher in the MVP voting. And did something he has never done, get his team to a wildcard game. That Commanders roster was garbage. Defense ga e up more points a then ours. He led them in rushing lol. Still went 12-5. Oh no, you defense can’t give up 23 points in the playoffs. Oh no where 23 points is like 43. Didn’t Seattle just give up 27 in the title game 🤔🤔. Oh well, more excuses loading.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:26 am
Kenton Smith-
My point was that Mayfield has shown that he’s not going to be the guy to lead the team to 4th quarter victories in the playoffs unless he has a great team around him, wheras QB’s like Brady and Mahomes have done so and Montana was the best at doing so.
I’m for Bucs signing Mayfield but not at expense of rest of the roster (losing players like Vea or Godwin)
If you think Mayfield is better than Josh Allen…who’s the twit?
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:27 am
Will to win is 1 thing. Being smart about it is something else. I love to see Bake put his head down and get the 1st down. I wonder what shots he took that hurt him that DIDN”T result in a 1st down or extended series and such. One can never know when a play is coming that will knock you out of a game and so many guys get hurt on just normal plays but a QB is different, they aren’t built to take that kind of punishment, maybe back in the day but not now. Add to that the BS “trash talking” that is pointless and he has a bigger target on him than most QB’s do. I think sometimes Baker felt like if he didn’t do it then it wouldn’t get done. The rest of the offense has to do their job to keep Baker healthy so he doesn’t feel that way, as they say get the ball in the hands of your “play makers”, but then the play makers have to make the plays.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:31 am
Nfl all time leader in displays of grit, moxies, shoulder chips and excuses.Copy and paste for when he comes up ” short”….yet again.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:41 am
Alanbucsfan, Montana is a bad example because he had basically an all-star team. Mahomes great QB but has a top 5 defense most years. Josh Allen I would say is the best example. He’s only one NFL QB though who doesn’t depend on what talent is surrounding him. My point is without a good defense it really doesn’t matter how good of a QB you have. You’ll lose in the playoffs!
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:49 am
Bucnjim-
Agree about needing a great D
Montana’s first 2 Super Bowl wins were good teams, I wouldn’t say Great and I doubt if those teams (‘81 and ‘84) win the SB without Montana and 49ers would likely have won another SB if they had played Montana instead of Steve Young in ‘92 NFC Championship game vs Cowboys. And Notre Dame’s comeback win in ‘79 Cotton Bowl with Montana at QB was Legendary.
June 23rd, 2026 at 8:54 am
If Baker Mayfield was hurt, Why Didn’t Coach Bowles Sit him and let him heal.
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:02 am
Who cares! That was last season!Healthy, Fresh faces on O and D ! Go Bucs!
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:07 am
Joe – stop writing articles. Stop writing about football, you are just repeating your same misunderstanding over and over again, and you’ve convinced yourself that Mayfield’s play stunk. It was never Mayfield. His production dipped due to wide-spread systemic breakdowns
Mayfield played well all season, the pieces around him faltered. All22 analysis by the few competent analysts in the TB community showed this over and over, including Ronde Barber. Listen to the people who know, who pay attention, who UNDERSTAND x’s and o’s and you’ll see that the problem on offense under 3 consecutive OCs has not been the QB. And it wasn’t even QB injuries.
Did QB injuries make Egbuka incapable of running to the correct depths or get bumped off his route,, or Tez Johnson run the wrong route, or Evans take the incorrect choice route? Did QB give up immediate interior pressure on almost every dropback every down? Did QB run such a terrible offense that 1st and 2nd downs were reserved only for running, and passing was only allowed on 3rd and long?
You idiots defend Grizzard and misunderstand football so badly that you think a QB can overcome an OC, an OL, WRs, no running game, poor field position…for 17 games?
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:09 am
Sounds like Baker wasn’t pressured as much as folks want to believe and Baker created his own pressure by escaping the pocket when there was no pressure….putting himself in harms way
GO BUCS
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:12 am
Baker is 28-26 as a Bucs QB including playoffs.
That’s what he is and what he will be.
If that’s worth 50 million a year then I’m a monkeys uncle.
Clearly someone at OBP agrees with that opinion or he’d have a new contract signed.
Mayfield is playing for himself, not for the team.
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:17 am
To confirm this take, I would look at number of touchdowns and first downs while under pressure in the 1st half vs the second half of the season.
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:17 am
Joe – stop writing articles. Stop writing about football. Ok. Joe deleted the rest because you mischaracterized what Joe has written/said in this space. Joe has no problem with criticism, as long as it reflects what’s been shared here. –Joe
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:27 am
So that is what needs to be established. We can’t just look at the history performance under pressure for the whole season and make this conclusion. We should be comparing the number of pressure situations in the first half vs the number of pressures in the second half and then looking at the outcomes of those pressures, i.e. success rates in both scenarios. If there were similar numbers of pressures in each half of the season but a significant drop off of success rates in the second half, then we can conclude that with at some confidence that his injuries played a significant role.
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:29 am
How soon we forget. Baker was a large part of the reason this team didn’t absolutely tank. After losing Brady. We got lucky. And you can say that he got lucky too, Baker. It was a good marriage of need and availability. Remember, we signed the guy for 4 and 1/2 million. Crazy. And the return we got on that investment was exceptional. And even his next contract which was much larger, he balled out year one. Obviously we all know about last season. Of course he was injured near the end. You can call it an excuse if you want, I call it a reason. Because it makes sense. Given the context. I’d like to resign him but I really think it would be in his best interest as well as ours. If he doesn’t try to break the bank. I don’t think ownership will do that either. They know we have to have a good team around him, including a legitimate backup. Quarterback for this to work.
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:35 am
A reasonable person can see exactly why the Bucs has a bad season last year, especially after the bye..
If the Bucs don’t realize by now that Baker is their best option over the next 5 years, they never will..
Baker always seems to be judged by a different standard than other QBs because he was the #1 pick and always has a chip on his shoulder..
This guy is being judged on the last half of last season, and those judging him are ignoring the 2 1/2 years prior..
Defensive Coach, 3 new OCs in 3 years, Backups playing O-Line all season, Majority of Skill players out most of the season and an absolutely horrible defense.
If you want evaluate Baker based on that go ahead.. But there are plenty of teams who would gladly pay Baker to be their franchise QB!
NFL Franchise QBs are not easy to find.. Just ask teams like the Jets, Browns, Steelers, Miami, Minnesota, etc…
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:39 am
The real question how many times under pressure did he not get a first down or touchdown.
June 23rd, 2026 at 9:50 am
It’s very simple.
If the Bucs want to attend a Super Bowl game with Baker at QB they will need the following:
1) a top 5 defense
2) a top 5 running game
3) a top 5 special teams
Until we can achieve these three objectives it will be a futile pursuit.
The Seahawks won a SB with Sam Darnold.
The Bucs CAN win a SB with our beloved “gritty” BM…
June 23rd, 2026 at 10:02 am
Sure. Injury excuses again.
A real coach wouldn’t tolerate a collapse in all three phases of his team. What we hasn is a coach who promoted collapse in all three phases. Including vacation during the bye week.
Genis.
June 23rd, 2026 at 10:09 am
According to some fans, Bowles is responsible for injuries, turnovers, missed tackles, bad special teams, weather patterns, and probably traffic on I-275.
Four straight division titles somehow get erased the moment adversity hits.

Let’s see how this season plays out before you guys jump off the Gandy Bridge together
June 23rd, 2026 at 10:12 am
Smitty, Baker is judged by a different standard because he started his career at the Factory of Sadness in Cleveland, was slandered by the organization that drafted him as well as the media there and some of those negative narratives, although somewhat changed for the better in recent history, reemerge with the slightest drop off in performance on the field or with any statements made publicly. He’s the QB a lot of people love to hate. A convenient punching bag if you will. Also, just as in real life, people are judged by appearance and as a quarterback he certainly doesn’t look anything like the prototype so he will always be doubted , so he has to accomplish more statistically and team success wise than Jordan Love or Trevor Lawrence or Justin Herbert.
June 23rd, 2026 at 10:18 am
So your saying pressure affects a QB? Pressure plus hits plus getting beat up from said hits. Go Bucs.
June 23rd, 2026 at 10:50 am
Baker is always playing from behind because the defense is bad and terrible. Then everyone knows Baker has to throw the ball and the opponent has their ears pin back and go after Baker. If wasn’t for Baker the team would be 5 and 12.
His teammates would walk thru fire for him.

“Only two quarterbacks (Drake Maye and Justin Herbert) produced more first downs and touchdowns (a touchdown also is considered a first down) than Mayfield when pressured”
The pressure:
-Herbert was pressured on 43% of his 512 pass attempts, was hit 129 times, sacked 54 times and played with 25 different OL combinations due to injury of both of his starting tackles. Managed managed to hit on 66% of his passes, for 3,727 yards, 26 TDs & 13 INTs. Herbert also rushed for 83 time for 498 yards and 2 scores. Herbert was the most pressured QB in all the NFL last season.
-Maye was pressured on 35% of his 492 pass attempts, was hit 81 times, sacked 47 times, and only had 4 different offensive line combinations. Maye hit on 72% of his passes, for 4,394 yards for 31 TDs and 8 INTs. Drake Maye was the 2nd most pressure QB.
-Mayfield was pressured on 14.8% of his 543 pass attempts, was hit 20 times, sacked 36 and played behind 9 different OL combinations. Mayfield hit on 63% of his passes for 3,963 yards, 26 TDs & 11 INTs. Mayfield was the 7th least pressure QB.
So Herbert & Maye produced under more duress than Mayfield. Herbert had surgery on his left hand mid-season, Drake Maye was realtively healthy, and well we still don’t know the specifics to the other injuries Baker dealt with outside of the shoulder injury he left the Rams game early with.
So yea, Maye & Herbert produced more, because they were under more pressure and still managed.
Maye accounted for 210(31 passing TDs & 4 rushing TDs) of New Englands’ total 490 points which was 42% of their scoring output. Pats ranked 2nd in scoring averaging 28 ppg.
Herbert accounted for 168(26 pass TDs & 2 rushing TDs) of LAs’ 368 points which was 45% of their scoring output. Chargers ranked 20th in scoring.
Mayfield accounted for 162(26 pass TDs & 1 rush TD) Of Tampas’ 346 points which was 46% of our overall scoring. Bucs ranked 18th in scoring.
Two examples of two different players, doing as much and more than Baker while being under way more pressure. For whatever that’s worth. Also, miss me with the usual “hater” jargon, some of you don’t like being faced with truths you don’t want to believe or be made aware of and start digitally pouting like a class of 1st graders being called in from recess, grow up.
June 23rd, 2026 at 11:24 am
Lol. Put Herbert on this team and in this division. Now put faker WillFail on the Chargers. He’d look like he did in 2022 and often in Cleveland. We were 5-2 last year with a negative point differential until we beat the Saints 20-3 to go 6-2. Offense was in the 20s in yards and scoring Kenton.
June 23rd, 2026 at 11:28 am
If you go from pressure 5% of the time to 95% of the time when both guards were out and it’s pressure up the middle, this stat does very little to help you. Think about it. If means you’re only successful on 56% plays instead of in the 90s.
June 23rd, 2026 at 11:34 am
Baker did have a couple of stinkers in the second half of the season but he played well enough to win the Buffalo, New England & Atlanta games. He is not the reason we lost those 3. The defense and or special teams lost those three games. He’s not the best but he’s good enough, pay him a fair deal. With the way the cap and the salaries go up it’ll be considered a bargain in two years.
June 23rd, 2026 at 12:32 pm
#99 the big fella Says:
“Four straight division titles somehow get erased the moment adversity hits.”
Someone needs to use his fingers when they count.
Three straight division titles in the worst division in the NFL.
One playoff win to show for that. Stellar.
June 23rd, 2026 at 1:10 pm
Quarterbacks cannot create wins out of thin air. And the air was VERY thin last year. I agree with final straw 100% and would like to have seen his second post.
June 23rd, 2026 at 1:30 pm
I also would love to know what the term pressure means and how it’s measured. Is it considered pressure when your guard is sitting on your lap? Seems to be a pretty subjective term. If it simply means the qb is forced off his spot before he can make a throw but does not include plays where he cannot step into the pass it’s also bunk. If it’s forced off his spot Baker was pressured nearly 100% of his plays from midseason on. You can see that just by watching the games.
June 23rd, 2026 at 1:35 pm
The only times he wasn’t were because he threw immediately upon receiving the ball. If you expect pressure on every play it changes your offense in fundamental and obvious ways. You can avoid ‘pressure” by throwing immediately but those plays are out wide and very rarely move the ball much. That’s where you see Mayfield’s average depth of target drift downward. That would lower pressure stats but do very little to get first downs.
June 23rd, 2026 at 1:44 pm
Here’s a stat for you that tells you all you need to know once both guards were out:
Before Week 10, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers boasted one of the league’s best units at sustaining drives, suffering three-and-outs on just 11.0% of their drives. However, injuries to key playmakers caused that rate to nearly double after their Week 10 bye week, surging to roughly 20.0% over the final stretch of the season as the offense stalled

Once Mauch and Bredeson were both out, the entire offense was toast.
June 23rd, 2026 at 1:54 pm
In actuality, when Baker had a good OC in 2024 he was a top 5 quarterback. Baker is a top 5 quarterback. Last season before all the injuries he was the leading candidate for MVP. To have a superbowl worthy team all the pieces have to be in place. That is why a good HC is so important, he makes sure all those pieces are together. TB is not that coach. I got a feeling our new OC Zis going to be good and Baker will dominate once again. Hopefully the line stays healthy and protects him and we can put it all together.
June 23rd, 2026 at 1:59 pm
“I also would love to know what the term pressure means and how it’s measured. Is it considered pressure when your guard is sitting on your lap?”
RFID( Radio-Frequency Identification) chips in players’ equipment, gauges proximity of players from one another and there’s also hardward built into every game ball. Refs and the chains are also equipped with tech that corresponds with sensor on the field.
With that tech it plots out a live on-field spatial map that tracks the movement of the players, the ball, chains and refs. It flags proximity of the pass rusher to the passer within 2 yards OR any player within 1.5 yards at any point of the play. So if a pass rusher/blitzer breaks any of those 2 thresholds on a pass attempt their location relative to the QB is tracked and gives you their location to define their position between the snap and the pass getting off to define when pressure is applied.
So basically radio transmitters fitted on every player are used to gauge speed, proximity and pretty much any other data point NFL next-gen tracks. These work in a comparable way as those black tanks fitted with GPS trackers you see players wearing at practice, but do a similar job the more sophisticated set-up on game days in the actual stadiums does.

“Before Week 10, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers boasted one of the league’s best units at sustaining drives, suffering three-and-outs on just 11.0% of their drives.”
Yea dude, we had a 38% 3rd down conversion rate over our first 8 games which ranked 21st in the league at that point.
We had 85 possessions in those first 8 games.
We scored 21 TDS, made 15 FGs & punted 20 times.
56 of 85 drives, the other 29 either ended in turnovers on down, giveaways, missed/blocked kicks, and end of half/game time stoppages.
-5 turnovers(3 fumbles & 2 picks)
-8 Kicks missed/blocked(2 blocked punts and a blocked FG)
-9 drives ended because of time expiration( 6 ended at the half, the other 3 was clock stoppage at the end of games)
-7 drives ended with a turnover on downs(failed 4th down conversions)
so yea, no
