Todd Bowles: Bucs “Definitely” Need A Corner, Maybe Two

April 1st, 2026

Watching tape of the Bucs pass defense hurt everyone’s eyes.

So now Bucs fans can start researching draftable corners.

That’s because Bucs coach Todd Bowles on Monday at the owners meetings in Arizona all but promised as many as two new corners will be added to the roster before training camp.

“We definitely need another cornerback,” Bowles said, as shared on Twitter by Jenna Laine of ESPN. “Whether it’s a veteran or whether it’s a draftable pick remains to be seen and we’ll kind of go from there. But we like to add one or two to the mix.”

Joe isn’t against this at all. There is a hole for a cornerback with Jamel Dean bolting for Pittsburgh, a destination he said gives him a chance to win a ring.

If Joe were in charge, Joe would have pulled an anti-lousy Lovie Smith and kept Dean around. When Lovie was here, he dumped quite a few starters off the pirate ship who went on to start on defenses for playoff teams. But they weren’t good enough for Lovie.

Meanwhile, Lovie took over a team with several defensive holes and dug more more holes. Then you look up and see how the Bucs earned the No. 1 overall pick the following spring. Shocking!

By keeping Dean, the Bucs could have used an otherwise valuable draft pick on an inside linebacker or a Hail Mary on an edge rusher or a quality backup guard.

Instead of addressing those holes, it appears the Bucs will devote a draft pick to a cornerback for the third year in a row. It didn’t have to be that way.

Yep. That outta turn it around. Hahahahahaha. Bring in more corners to get lit up because you can’t get at the QB. Smrt! Extend his contract please.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

Licht will be dumpster diving lol….

we’ll probably draft a decent player like Devin Moore in the mid rounds….then sign a vet who’s cut during PS….thats the JL way lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  3. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

That’s fine but please, for the love of all that is Holy, build from front to back! Smash the Oline and get to the QB, then our corners can do their job. You could have All-Pros back there and wouldn’t do much good if the QB is eating a sandwich while waiting for his receivers to get open. I’m no GM but I know you build front to back. Jason knows this right Joe!?

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Dean didn’t WANT to stay, and frankly I’m not sad he’s gone. The best compliment I could give Dean was that he was “serviceable”.

Even if we had kept him, I would still say we need two more DBs.

Fanman has a family motto: “You can never have enough competent DBs!”

  5. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“That’s what Joe feels about this. By keeping Dean, the Bucs could have used an otherwise valuable draft pick on an inside linebacker or a Hail Mary on an edge rusher or a quality backup guard.”

We have 7 draft picks, all this is doable even with us likely having to draft a CB. It’s also a pretty decent class too. Not ridiculously top-heavy, but there are some guys coming out that could work with who we have already and what we try to do is a unit.

Couple guys projected to go outside of the 1st I think could work for us:

    -Tacario Davis
    -Devin Moore
    -Charles Demmings
    -Ephesians Prysock
    -Andre Fuller
    -Daylen Everette

As the cliche goes, you can never have too many corners. McCollum & Morrison shouldn’t be given anything this offseason.

  6. Lakeland Says:

Lovie dumped Revis to save money

That’s the exact season why they dumped Dean
Jerod McCoy had an excellent pro day for Tennessee
He even ran a 4.37 after missing the entire season
Mansoor Delane and McCoy are the top corners

    I like DeAngelo Ponds

  7. Lakeland Says:

    “”exact reason

  8. Stpetematt Says:

It usually takes a little while for corners to develop. It’s time for McCollum’s to at least *start* to develop this year. Morrison should at least show some flashes. Don’t draft a corner in the first round…there’s too many intriguing prospects that can actually help other defensive positions. Styles might fall a ways necessitating a trade up for instance…

  9. Lakeland Says:

    ***Jermod McCoy CB from Tennessee

  10. Pops Malone Says:

Dean will hurt himself stretching during OA’s and miss the first two months of the season….he is addition by subtraction even without a solid replacement for him yet….

  11. HeavyE Says:

We need a new QB, HC & GM,that’s what we need Desperately….

  12. Permanently Moderated Says:

Dean’s excuse for leaving is lame. Pittsburgh won’t be in a Super Bowl before he has to retire. Evans has a better chance, but I’m not seeing it happening for him, either. I know they’re considered one of the favorites, but, like many others on this site, my prognostication is just as valid at this point.

  13. Joe Says:

As the cliche goes, you can never have too many corners.

Agree with that! Father Dungy once said every draft a team should draft a corner. Worked for him.

  14. Lakeland Says:

They will draft a CB, sign a few UDFA CBs
Then wait for the final cuts, and search the waiver wire for another CB

Then they will expect for them to shadow a Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase

  15. Smashsquatch Says:

Why tip your hand Todd? This is a time to mislead. Tell us how bullish you are with the guys you have. Just like JL and his chest full of hope.

  16. larrd Says:

OSU’s Igbinosin in the third, Washington’s Tocario Davis in the fourth.

    1. DT Kayden McDonald
    2. LB Harold Perkins
    3. CB Igbinosin
    4. CB Taco Davis
    5. LB Lander Barton
    6. S/NB Lorenzo Styles Jr.
    7. QB Luke Altmyer

    Easy peasy!

  17. Tony Says:

You just figuring this out? Duh. I’ve said this for awhile. Yeah probably two CBs probably two DEs another LB (maybe two) another OL probably another DT & then depending on if they wanna consider another S TE or WR. Another one wouldn’t hurt. That’s at least eleven picks right there. I’d still consider trading down because there’s too many needs.

  18. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Agree with that! Father Dungy once said every draft a team should draft a corner. Worked for him.”

And that was back in the 90’s when teams actually used their base defenses more and just needed 2 good starters.

Now it’s almost damned if you don’t, because all it takes is one starting CB to go down to expose the value or lack thereof your CB depth.

  19. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“OSU’s Igbinosin in the third, Washington’s Tocario Davis in the fourth.”

Stopped tracking this kid the more tape I watched, Igbinosun has the traits and size, but somebody emptied a whole can of Niagra on his hips cause he moves with the fluidity of a sun dial.

  20. Football 1 Says:

I agree with you Joe completely. However nice to hear Bowles admit we need them. With that said letting Dean go with the present starters is scary. Morrison and McColumn in my opinion are clearly non starters at this point!! There is not much depth either. Yes Parrish likely according to Bowles can take over the outside corner position. That leaves the Bucs needing 2 starting corners. That is a lot to replace. At this point I just don’t see Morrison or McColumn starting until they prove otherwise. It appears giving McColumn that extension early was another huge mistake. Presently he appears dead in the water as far as helping this team. Morrison who knows but it appears he can’t stay healthy

  21. Orange Republic Says:

Bucs are going to have a nice compensatory pick in the 2027 draft for losing Evans and Dean. When’s the last time they got one? That’s the problem with keeping all your talent every year.

  22. Tampa2ATL Says:

What’s the over/under on how many games Jamal Dean plays this year for Steelers?

  23. Not a good look Says:

Move Parrish outside and Draft Keionte Scott at NCB

  24. Hodad Says:

Draft all the corners you want. Without a pass rush they’re doomed to fail. Morrison was a second round pick spent for the sole purpose of replacing Dean. Don’t say Dean leaves a hole, that’s Morrison. The Bucs need depth, but the purpose of drafting Morrison, Parrish, and paying Zyon was to have 3 viable starters. Now if it turns out Morrison as a second round pick is a bust, and Zyon doesn’t live up to his paycheck, we have a problem. That’s on Licht, Bowles, and they should pay the price if they’re wrong. Bucs need to think more front, to back. They have little in the front, but paid Winfield, Zyon, drafted Morrison, Parrish, Smith in the back. We shouldn’t be using any more premium picks for the secondary. It hasn’t made us better.

  25. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs don’t get a compensatory pick for losing Jamel Dean
Because they restructured his contract and shorten his years
And they get a 5th at best for losing Mike Evans, because he’s a 10+ years vet

  26. ModHairKen Says:

There ain’t enough picks to fix everything. How many years has this team drafted 2 DBs two years in a row and had that not solve the problems?

Guard. DT. Edge. ILB. OLB. TE. RB. WR. All areas of need and now you tell us that the 2 CBs drafted last year aren’t enough?

    Sad.

  27. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“There ain’t enough picks to fix everything. How many years has this team drafted 2 DBs two years in a row and had that not solve the problems?”

2018 & 2019 and I’ll broadened the scope and say DBs, period.

    2018:

    -Carlton Davis
    – MJ Stewart
    -Jordan Whitehead

    2019:

    -SMB
    -Dean
    -Mike Edwards

Everybody but Stewart was on the SB team contributing.

  28. 3.28.Evans Says:

At this point, Todd Bowles < Lovie Smith

  29. Saskbucs Says:

Yeah it feels obvious they needed at least 1 more.

It’s gonna be a BPA 1st round year again. Drafting in no man’s land.

Only 1 QB going in top 20 potentially. Who knows how teams will have guys rated.

Not sure about McCoy missing the season but if Delane falls he is probably a wise pick.

If Bucs are looking to take a LB or DT, trade back seems like the best option and I have a feeling Jason will go for that this year if it’s on the table.

  30. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“And they get a 5th at best for losing Mike Evans, because he’s a 10+ years vet”

The time for comp picks has come and gone, we didn’t get one for Mike because we spent more than we lost and he signed a low value deal for his value. So no comp picks at all.

  31. Badbucs Says:

CB could be 1st round pick if it falls right. At least Todd sees it. Holes everywhere. CB seems fairly deep. Could get a late round one or maybe UDFAs too.

  32. Marc Says:

Todd you need 3-4 people in the front 7 that will make the corners you have better. Another crazy idea would be to coach up/scheme up the players you have.

  33. HC Grover Says:

    Need a Coach Maybe Two.
An HC and DC will do

  34. Fanofdabucs Says:

If any teams a A CB covering JJ or Chase one on one, they will get burnt.

Anyway, CB might just be the best value on the board at 15 if they can’t trade down. McCoy is the real deal and would change thos secondary.

Still hope they can find a trade down partner, but if not, McCoy wouldn’t suck.

  35. Confido75 Says:

Go with the best players available each round, because that is a better strategy than anything Bowles can come up with.

  36. Ash Says:

Yeah you definitely can have too many cbs I’m just asking for one dominant pass rusher please stop with you can’t have too many of this or that I just want one dominat pass rusher all those cbs you currently have will look a hell of a lot better with someone terrorizing the QB.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs have 3 legit NFL corners. You need 6.

So the math is pretty easy on this one.

I assume they’ll draft at least one legit corner in the draft – but really it depends on if they can trade down and pick up picks or not. Lots of needs all over the place.

  38. Dubcity6 Says:

Dont let Litch pick em.. Vernon Hargreaves again

  39. Vancouver Buc Says:

Anyone else tired of seeing that mug’s face next the the headlines?

  40. Will Says:

    Please don’t draft a small CB/DB

  41. Mike C Says:

Dean couldn’t stay on the field, not a big loss

  42. Mike C Says:

Dean couldn’t stay on the field, not a big loss.

  43. 3.28.Evans Says:

Vancouver – indeed. It forces me to drink more, faster.

Meanwhile, “cover zero” means something completely different in a Todd Bowles defense.

  44. Vancouver Buc Says:

    ^^^💯

  45. Buc Fan in Phoenix Says:

    ————————————————–

Not really sure that Dean REALLY thinks that. He is merely saying what he needs to say and I am sure he is enjoying his salary there. I am glad you are indeed not in charge because Dean was constantly injured and an injured player does us no good when they are not on the field. Dean had a history of that so YES it was time for him to leave. Besides the fact that his skillset was never really used to the team’s advantage in Todd ‘the toilet’ Bowles defensive scheme. Tell me I am wrong?

  46. BucsSkitzo Says:

Please football gods, let the cards fall right and let Mccoy or Terrell be there at 15. Would be amazing if Mccoy fell but highly doubt it. Or trade back a few spots if possible and grab and grab cissee. I’m thinking Terrell might be there at 15. Wouldn’t be mad.

  47. Ron Mexico Says:

    >, it appears the Bucs will devote a draft pick to a cornerback for the third year in a row.

Which CB did we draft in 2024?
