There’s A Reason For That
April 24th, 2026Joe is a big fan of Ben Solak of BSPN. Joe thinks he brings a fresh outlook to the game.
Joe also believes Solak does good research, and his enthusiasm and passion for football comes out in his work. He’s a pleasant if not fun read.
In the video below, Solak explains how badly the Bucs got a steal last night when the Miami Mauler, Rueben Bain, slipped to Tampa Bay, Warren Sapp-like.
(No, Joe’s not saying Bain is Sapp, just that Sapp shockingly fell to the Bucs in 1995. Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht explained last night they never expected Bain to be on the board when the Bucs were on the clock.)
However, Solak was outraged that the last time the Bucs had an edge rusher who had more than 10 sacks was 2019. And Solak is right, it is an outrage!
One reason the Bucs haven’t had a guy with more than 10 sacks since 2019 is the Bucs have a defensive coordinator who stresses pressures, and when pressed why he doesn’t get many sacks from edge rushers often replies that he asks his edge rushers to do other things.
Quick question for Joe’s readers: Does anyone really believe Bain was drafted at No. 15 overall was for his ability to cover receivers? Anyone? Bueller?
Joe really, really, really hopes someone at One Buc Palace gets the hint the Bucs may have a rare talent in Bain and unleashes him at what he does best.
And Joe has a strong hunch if Bain could play safety, he would, because the shelf life (revenue stream) of a safety is often longer than dudes who get beat on each and every play and have no original knees left by the time they hit 50.
Can't imagine how thrilled the Bucs were to sit at 15 and let Rueben Bain fall to them. Steal of Night 1. pic.twitter.com/ua5fk8WeAr

The difference between Bain & JTS is like Chicken Salad & Chicken $hit….
April 24th, 2026 at 12:10 pm
Yes well you saw who was the happiest GM last night, that much was clear.
April 24th, 2026 at 12:20 pm
My Joe said,
“ Joe really, really, really hopes someone at One Buc Palace gets the hint the Bucs may have a rare talent in Bain and unleashes him at what he does best. “
Me too, My Joe. But based on the data and experience, there’s a better chance that one of your “Distractions of the Day” shows up with a fully stocked bar and serves us great beverages all day.
Hope.

If Bowles continues with his stand around and wait for something to happen super soft zone garbage, it won’t matter if you got B-Rex, Simeon Rice and LT out there at the same time, the QB will always have someone open to dump the ball off too.
It’s amazing how different this scheme looked when Arians was there and made Bowles stay aggressive. And being aggressive is about more than sending 5 defenders on every play (in particular when your base defense is basically a 5-2), it means aggressive coverage. If the Bucs are going to stick with this awful zone, then bring in Dungy or Barber or someone to teach the COACHES how to run a zone – it is possible to run a tight zone, not a super sloppy stand around zone.
April 24th, 2026 at 12:25 pm
It makes me think of the Tristan Wirfs draft.
Wirfs was thought of as the best OT in the class, but teams got enamoured by the size and athleticism of other prospects.
Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills and Mekhi Becton all went before Wirfs because they had ‘higher ceilings’.
They let the best PLAYER slide because they got distracted by size, athleticism and promise.
Happens time and time again. Happenned with Bain.
David Bailey and Arvell Reese are good and have very high ceilings.
But Bain was by far the better player.
April 24th, 2026 at 12:30 pm
We are blessed.
He can start at EDGE but also rush the QB from DT on 3rd down.
So we got à true defensive lineman.
He can play DT, DE and OLB for this defense.
Just as Kancey can line up anywhere.
Did you know we didn’t let Vea rush from the OLB position one time last year?
Go look at the snaps Vea has gotten at OLB.
He is dominant.
Why?
Because when Vea rushes from OLB, he gets to bull rush an OT one on one.
Vea normally faces double teams.
Reward the big fella!
Let him get more snaps at OLB!!
April 24th, 2026 at 12:44 pm
If anyone could ruin Bain its Bowles. His defense is a system, manufacturing pressures and creating packages vs pinning ears back and go. Heard former player confirm it. Dont think Bowles can develip anyone and they need an alpha to telk Bowles “No! This is how its done!”
April 24th, 2026 at 12:45 pm
Best thing about Bain is Bowles is out of excuses, no more it’s complicated it’s not complicated BS, you got the horses now it’s up to Bowles to use them properly if not, I promise Tomlin will
April 24th, 2026 at 12:47 pm
move him around but just keep him moving forward rushing the passer…
we have the player and talent to avoid dropping DLs into coverage so often!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!
April 24th, 2026 at 12:52 pm
I couldn’t be more excited to add Bain to the Bucs!
April 24th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
Was he a steel or no ,different people say different things. Let’s hope was is and fits this defense . We will see shortly!!. So often DE do so well in college and poorly at the nfl level. Why because O T’s at nfl level are big and good. Let’s hope the Bucs break the L Selmon curse. We will see cause he is definitely needed. Ok we desperately need 2 ILB please!!, oh and 2 corners
April 24th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
Finally! Go Bucs!
April 24th, 2026 at 1:02 pm
“If the Bucs are going to stick with this awful zone, then bring in Dungy or Barber or someone to teach the COACHES how to run a zone – it is possible to run a tight zone, not a super sloppy stand around zone.”
Rod, you gotta stop making stuff up and trying to confuse your opinion for fact.
We faced 617 pass attempts in 2020, on 73% of those reps we played some zone coverage.
We know you love man coverage and think it equates to aggression, but the facts are not with you. Please cut this out, it’s literally text pollution.
You don’t even get specific with it, it’s not like you have a problem with 0-blitzes out of cover 3 or quarters. Your gripe is just zone period, read the room. Maybe start watching football on Saturdays, so you can see how prominent zone coverage in the football landscape so you can at least stop repeating this nonsense.
If it’s not you talking down about zone, it’s the guys talking about switching our base D like we don’t run a variation of a 4-2-5 no matter the instance and I want better for all of you as fellow football fans.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:08 pm
Arm length, 40 times, cone drills – give me a break.
Bain was dominant at the highest level of college ball. Production over measurable all day everyday.
JTS was the prototype DE right? So were a ton of others busts. Give me production. Pass the eye test on football film, not track film.
Bain is a monster.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:09 pm
I recall Barrett falling into coverage when he played for the Bucs. If Bain turns out to be a really good edge rusher Bowles isn’t that stupid to end up being fired for another under achieving season.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:16 pm
A zebra doesn’t change its stripes. It’s hard to think that Bowles won’t drop Bain into coverage many times a game. Bowles is in love with the whole defensive guru thing. He likes to trick offenses rather than just beat them with superior play. So, as of game #1 the drop into coverage count will be on every time Bain is in the game. I hope that someone with a lot of pull, maybe one of the Glazers tells Bowles, don’t you dare drop Bain into coverage. I don’t think it will happen but that is what it will probably take to stop Bowles from trying to prove to everyone what a defensive genius he is. Cough, cough.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:17 pm
I have a feeling Bain will be here long after Bowles.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:18 pm
@ Rod Munch Says: “…it won’t matter if you got B-Rex, Simeon Rice and LT out there at the same time…”
A ‘notification’ just alerted my screen while reading this exact post at the very moment I was reading HIS name. I haven’t ‘clicked-it’ yet, but LT was just rushed to the hospital, in an “emergency” situation, according to TMZ. Crazy. Seriously, I do this all the time. SO OFTEN it is absolutely INSANE. Just WILD, ‘Mind-Blowing’ stuff.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:21 pm
I “hope” TB uses Bain to his strengths. He should as this is both TB’s and JL’s prove it year. We don’t know really what conversations the owners are engaged in with other coaches or GMS, but I think these last several seasons have tried their patience. I’m looking for a re-born defense and fully stocked/stacked roster. It could get them to the NFC Championship game.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:23 pm
Joe … ‘One reason the Bucs haven’t had a guy with more than 10 sacks since 2019 is the Bucs have a defensive coordinator who stresses pressures, and when pressed why he doesn’t get many sacks from edge rushers often replies that he asks his edge rushers to do other things.’
OK Joe, you got me curious with your rationale as to why the Bucs haven’t had any double-digit sack meisters since Todd Bowles’ first year here as our DC. Hmmm, also got me wondering if he’s the only DC who ‘asks his edge rushers to do other things’.
Obviously Shaq had 19.5 sacks as we all know in 2019, Todd’s first year here. The year prior (2018) JPP had 12.5 sacks under Mike Smith (in our 4-3 defense).
But then something interesting shows up. No Buc had over 9.5 sacks in the period starting in 2006 through 2017, a period of 12 years. That period covered 5 HCs (and their DCs). And BTW, it was Simeon Rice who got 14 sacks in 2005 to break that string. And Simeon also got over 10 sacks every year from 2001-2005 (got hurt in 2006 & only got 2 sacks).
Interestingly, Bucs had TWO players (Sapp & Marcus Jones) who had double digit sacks in 2000, and BOTH were ‘home-grown’ (unlike Simeon, Shaq & JPP). Just as interesting though, the Bucs as a TEAM only had 43 sacks TOTAL that season, with 29.5 of those coming from Sapp & Jones.
With so few Bucs who actually hit over 10 sacks this century (Sapp, Jones, Rice, JPP, Shaq) kinda gets me wondering if the DCs other than Bowles were also asking their edge rushers to ‘do other things’. Of course there’s also the possibility that our edge rushers other than those 5 didn’t have the talent to achieve double-digit sacks, but we won’t go there.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:23 pm
The Bucs haven’t been able to get penetration with a 3 man rush
That’s was their biggest problem
With a 4 man rush, they don’t need to blitz so much.
And players on the back end can do their job
You don’t need schemes with a solid 4 man pass rush
But if you’re not getting pressure with a 4 man rush
You got to scheme, and drop an Edge Rusher in coverage
The 3-4 defense is more effective with a 3 man rush
April 24th, 2026 at 1:23 pm
Crazy that we get a steal in the draft and the biggest concern is if the coach is going to use him properly. The team is supposed to be better because of the coach, not playing dazed confused. All we have is hope. Go Bucs!

————
I’ve seen that stat before, and it’s literally not true. It is claiming that playing bump and run, man-to-man defense is actually zone because there’s a hand-off that occurs down the field, or during crossing routes. No one in the world thinks of that as zone and it is absolutely not the current zone that Bowles is running where players stand around flat footed, 10 to 15 yards down the field, and wait for something happen.
And I literally said if the Bucs want to continue playing zone, then bring in someone to teach the coaches how to run a zone defense, that it is possible to run a tight zone.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:25 pm
I meant the Bucs haven’t been able to get penetration with a 4 man rush
April 24th, 2026 at 1:26 pm
“I recall Barrett falling into coverage when he played for the Bucs.”
Heaven forbid we ask football players to play football.
People that complain about dropping OLBs in coverage, also talk like every snap OLBs play is a pass rep. I blame fantasy football being a psuedo-learning tool for some peoples’ introduction to football.
Jason Taylor won DPOY over Sean Merriman and his 17 sacks in 12 games in ’06 partly because Taylor had 11 of his 87 career PBUs that year and also had 2 of his 8 career pick-6ixes. Taylor finished 5th in sacks(13.5), and nobody ahead of him on that list is a HOFer or even an potential HOF inductee.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:26 pm
This is what I see coming; After the draft dust settles and Jason and the owners get a sense of the potential of the team there will be an honest evaluation done. The assessment the owners had just a few weeks ago is toast. The long term and medium term coaching plans and options no longer apply. Baker’s situation is now much more critical. Todd Bowles will be forced to evaluate his own scheme and methods. The question becomes – Will he change ? Will the defensive scheme change to fit the new talent ? Will the owners allow status quo ? Only fools would let this opportunity slip through their fingers. With a good offense and good defense the owners have a chance to stave off a downward spiral but it all depends on good coaching. The owners , in my view, simply have to employ good business practice and do whatever needs to be done to improve the now critical weak link on the team. It’s the difference between lots of money and angling for a new QB and total costly rebuild. If Bowles has to give up control over the defense so be it. If he’s as smart as he’s portrayed he will see that his near term future and his coaching legacy depends on the deflation of his ego bubble. Bowles should recognize the obvious historical context. The wave Bowles rode in on is repeating but does he see that ? He’s the weak link.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:26 pm
Someone should place a Bain “drop back in coverage” Ticker inside of Ray Jay, for EVERY Sunday home game. And, update it every time Bain “drops back.” Make-it SO HUGE where Bowles can’t miss-it! Guaranteed it would make Bowles’ stubborn ass do it even MORE just outta spite, in order to prove a point. It’s just what dumb people do. Matter of fact, there should be 100’s of them scattered across the stadium LoL. Beginning DAY-1. It needs to be a thing!
April 24th, 2026 at 1:27 pm
“I’ve seen that stat before, and it’s literally not true. It is claiming that playing bump and run, man-to-man defense is actually zone because there’s a hand-off that occurs down the field, or during crossing routes”
Zone over the top with man underneath is zone coverage, Rod. I’m not going to split these hairs with you(again) I’ll just take it as you having some sort of mental hang-up and you need to be right about this, even though you’re not and its’ a weird read.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:29 pm
Disagree WBL. There’s a big difference between the soft zone we play and aggressive match-up zone. Seattle plays lots of zone, but you don’t see constant wide open receivers running loose. You don’t have to play man to man to have some tight coverage. Todd wants to blame the players instead of how they’re coached to play. I get that it’s not the top secondary in the league playing. Neither was Detroit’s when their scrubs shut us down. Scheme needs to be updated to today’s NFL. Todd still getting credit for shutting down KC offense in the Superbowl with their 2 third string replacement tackles. Nevermind the all-world D-line.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:33 pm
The pressure has to come from somewhere
And I’m sure Todd Bowles rather have it come from 4 pass rushers
But l have seen the Bucs send up to 6 pass rushers, and still no pressure
With 4 Rushers getting pressure, it’s the perfect solution to this problem
Todd Bowles knows what he’s doing
He’s been doing it at a high level for 40 years
Give him the right players, and he we will succeed
I don’t have any doubt
April 24th, 2026 at 1:33 pm
“And I literally said if the Bucs want to continue playing zone, then bring in someone to teach the coaches how to run a zone defense, that it is possible to run a tight zone”
If it’s clear by you comments that you don’t understand zone principles, then this means absolutely nothing.
You’re cross about the results of zone. Did you know we went from 73% zone usage rate in 2024 to a 59% zone usage rate? Did you know, that 9 of our 13 Ints and at least 1 defensive score in ’25 came whilst we were in zone coverage?
If you need a list of those INTs and our zone usage in those games, will it at least get you to stfu about zone coverage? just a lil bit?
April 24th, 2026 at 1:39 pm

It’s how Kentucky used BIG BADDDDD ASS Deone Walker throughout his young career… Even, as a standing upright EDGE rusher. Buffalo has done some of the same literally, moving him all up and down the line, somewhere different almost every snap. At 6’7” 3-FIDDY. CanNOT be contained 1-on-1. Just IMAGINE if JL had stolen HIM in last season’s draft… IN.SANE. God. We would be SET. A future with HIM, Bain, & Kancey… MY GOD. I can’t believe we didn’t get him, especially being in the south and right in SEC country!!!!
April 24th, 2026 at 1:41 pm
I’m not going to question or second guess Todd Bowles
The man knows defense, all he need is the players
He’s been in the NFL game for over 40 years
He’s been an HC, DC, Player and have had some success
I’m all in with Todd Bowles, and the Bucs
April 24th, 2026 at 1:41 pm
This is a disaster. Now the O will tank and Bowzo D will self destruct. F- Draft.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:44 pm
“Disagree WBL. There’s a big difference between the soft zone we play and aggressive match-up zone. Seattle plays lots of zone, but you don’t see constant wide open receivers running loose.”
Disagree all you want, doesn’t make your retort correct
Every.Single.Team in the NFL plays more zone than man and has some degree of success/failure doing so, because running a scheme just doesn’t mean it’s going to work/fail because it’s called, you have to have the dawgs to prop the scheme up.
The last part about WRs constantly running loose is just hyperbole, the most explosive plays against our defense was accompanied by a crap ton of YAC. That’s not getting beat deep, that’s terrible containment and why some want Voss out of the lineup and were crapping on a legend like LVD.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:46 pm
“ It could get them to the NFC Championship game.” Hence the name “Crazy” horse. We draft Bain, and now we’re going to the NFC Championship Game. LoL. Not a chance. ZERO possibility. Not happening. Not even close. Though, I do believe the DEFENSE will be the strength of THIS Team. Offense not so much. It’ll be a STRUGGLE. Much tougher schedule, AND Division.
April 24th, 2026 at 1:47 pm
Jason Licht has upgraded the defense this off-season
We are tougher, stronger, bigger, smarter,
And we have players that wants to play
And we’re not done yet
All l see is sunny days ahead
April 24th, 2026 at 1:48 pm
I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the ride

April 24th, 2026 at 1:58 pm
I think Bain will shine more after we fire Bowles and hopefully switch back to a 4-3.
Hopefully I’m wrong and Bain works out well in a 3-4, but I don’t have much confidence that he will after reading the scoring report Joe posted last night.

————–
According to who?
Zone numbers are not black and white, it depends on who is deciding what is zone and what isn’t – and whatever word games they want to play, and the amount of ‘zone’ because of that can vary greatly depending on the source.
To make it very clear for you since you don’t seem to understand…
My issue isn’t with zone. The 2002 Buccaneers defense ran zone (and hold you comments, I know it wasn’t exclusively zone) and they’re the greatest defense in the history of the game.
My issue is with Bowles awful version of zone that he started in 2021 when we had all the injuries in the defensive backfield. At the time, I defended the move to playing softer coverage, because the Bucs didn’t have a choice when they’re having to go out and sign guys like Richard Sherman off their couch and have him start a few days later. But what broke Bowles was the aggressive call to end the playoff game vs the Rams – that play, along with Arians retired, let Turtle Bowles go into his shell, where he’s remained ever since. Bowles, once he was free of Arians, has gone to a defensive scheme where he plays not to lose.
But YES, that does mean he still runs man. And YES, bad things can happen when he runs man. And YES, good things are possible even with his garbage version of zone.
Stop your nitpicking and just watch the games. Do you think the Bucs defense looks awesome when Bowles is having corners and safeties lining up 10-15 yards off the line of scrimmage and then just literally standing around waiting for something to happen? Do you think Winfield is used best when Bowles has him 30 yards down the field at the same of the ball on 2nd and 7?
Just go watch some tape, look at the late 2019 Bucs defense and the 2020 Bucs defense, and try telling me this is the same scheme. It’s not.
April 24th, 2026 at 2:06 pm
Biggest problem with our zone was LD45 and SVD in the center of it. The scheme only works with 2 superhumans in those spots
April 24th, 2026 at 2:06 pm
To the owners;
You messed up with Coen.
You messed up with Bowles.
Your best chance at saving face is to take the defense away from Bowles.
April 24th, 2026 at 2:10 pm
I love the Bain pick absolute steal at 15 and i would be even more ecstatic if our HC wasn’t Bowles i have no faith he is going to utilize him correctly hopefully doesn’t ruin the guy.

LT will be fine and released shortly, I just read on TMZ.
April 24th, 2026 at 2:12 pm

Yeah, I didn’t see that LT info until you mentioned it earlier and just saw the update. Great to hear, would have been a real downer if something happened to him, in particular while he was at the draft.
April 24th, 2026 at 2:27 pm
Should the Bucs draft Jermod McCoy in Round 2?
Even move up to get him?
April 24th, 2026 at 2:30 pm
Fortunately for the Bucs, Simpson got picked up and there was a run on OT’s. Bain fell to us, a miracle scenario – like Kay Adams falling on Joe.
CBS Sports NFL Draft analysts. Mike Renner on Bain:
“While he has some of the shortest arms we’ve ever seen from a first-round edge rusher, that didn’t stop him from terrorizing offenses last year as the most disruptive defensive end in college football.”
Love it, give me a disruptive, violent guy up front who has a chip on his shoulder!
On to ILB/CB/DT in rd 2 !
April 24th, 2026 at 2:40 pm
Not that mocks mean sh!t but I the one I looked at today had all three LBs (JRod, Hill & Allen) available when the Bucs pick. That would be another blessing for this franchise
April 24th, 2026 at 2:40 pm
I’m more concerned about the offense than the defense
April 24th, 2026 at 2:44 pm
I said before the draft m, these so-call draft gurus, are only guessing
And it showed last night, they were so far off, it’s embarrassing
And they tried to cover it up, by saying teams were making dumb trades and reaching
These mock drafts are nothing but entertainment, Hollywood style
April 24th, 2026 at 2:58 pm
We need McCoy on day two just look at the WR’s that we are going to have to go against this year….& the Saints aren’t playing around! Plus we a have a corner that likes to get Bored, we need a back up plan for sure! Let’s Go Bucs! Go get McCoy!!!!
April 24th, 2026 at 3:02 pm
Bucs just need another good DL, an ILB and a few CBs out of this draft. Hope Licht sticks with Defense in the next 3 rounds.
April 24th, 2026 at 3:03 pm
Buc1987 nailed it!
Bain will be a Buc long after Bowles is gone.
I also think the Olbers dropping into coverage gets a little overblown.
Bain will be just fine in Bowles defense. And if he’s not, Bowles will be toast and the new HC/DC will use Bain correctly.
But I’m not ruining my excitement for drafting my favorite player in the entire draft at 15. Bain will change the defense, especially if Kancey can just stay healthy.
April 24th, 2026 at 3:07 pm
WBL hit the nail on the head. Shaq JPP vea all have dropped into coverage. It’s a wrinkle , can throw the QB off also I’ve watched it work. Vea in the nfc champ game dropped into coverage and level a dude and he dropped the pass. I get it drives some people crazy but it’s football and there’s a reason these coaches are in the nfl and these guys are just fans thinking they can do better. It’s real easy to get on here and be a keyboard warrior. These coaches work more hrs in a day then some of yall work all week.
April 24th, 2026 at 3:24 pm
J Rod in 2nd round!!!!!!!! Bucs need more disruptors!!!!!
April 24th, 2026 at 3:25 pm
I have zero confidence in toilet bowels using Bain correctly. He’ll try to prove he always knew what he was doing.
April 24th, 2026 at 3:30 pm
I’m looking forward to this season
Not a season 3 years from now
And the last time l checked Todd Bowles is the HC/DC
And I’m good with it, I have no complaints
I was a Buc fan before Todd Bowles
I’m gonna be a Buc fan after Todd Bowles
I’m a Buc fan, not a fan of the HC, DC, OC, or the players
April 24th, 2026 at 3:33 pm
Instead of whining and complaining
I’m gonna be too busy supporting the team
April 24th, 2026 at 3:37 pm
There’s a lot of Head Coaches l haven’t liked over the years
But l still supported them, cause I’m a fan of the team
April 24th, 2026 at 3:39 pm
So Reuben knows and talks to Lavonte. I would like to know what he tells him about Bowles now that he has no constraints. I don’t believe at all that Lavonte would mislead him. Any hesitation from Lavonte or Carlton would tip him off anyway.
April 24th, 2026 at 3:42 pm
There is a big distinction between honest criticism and whining and complaining. Some here don’t understand that.

@Warren Brooks Lynch
Brother I feel for you trying to debate Rod regarding defense. He’s NEVER going to admit he’s ignorant and wrong.
1st it was play more man to man. Then it was zones ok (duh) but not Todd’s version. Then it turned into zone is actually man and NOT zone if the DBs are playing tighter.
He’s already lost this argument (with another poster) several times – he just can’t/won’t admit it.
@Rod
Just stick to Baker trolling man. You are grasping for straws and trying to muddy the waters in this (zone vs man to man) debate….
@Lakeland
I see you bro and appreciate your positive attitude ! It ain’t easy with all these whiny old losers calling anyone who doesn’t think everything/everybody sucks derogatory names. Keep it up brother 👍🏼
