Baker Mayfield’s Heart May Be His Worst Enemy
April 9th, 2026If you clip a bird’s wings, you’re basically left with a feathered squirrel.
That’s the balancing act the Bucs and Baker Mayfield navigate each year.
There is no quarterback in the NFL with better intangibles than Mayfield. No quarterback has more heart. No quarterback has more guts. And no quarterback plays with the passion of a linebacker better than Mayfield.
But that’s also Mayfield’s kryptonite. Playing with that devil-may-care mentality puts Mayfield in harm’s way. And as Bucco Bruce Arians likes to say, in the NFL, harm will find you.
The flip side is if Mayfield isn’t Mayfield, he’s no longer the dangerous quarterback he is. Mayfield is best when he puts the team on his back and lays it all on the line just to get a first down, forget a touchdown.
Former Bucs linebacker Lavonte David finally spoke the truth out loud that everyone seemed to believe; injuries really messed up Mayfield in the second half of last season. And with Mayfield being a shell of himself, the Bucs lost seven of their final nine games and missed the playoffs.
The creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, heard David’s words and said on a recent edition of PFT Live, seen weekday mornings on NBC Sports Network, that Mayfield may drag the Bucs down if he doesn’t start avoiding hits.
“I’m a big advocate of a quarterback’s obligation to keep himself healthy,” Florio said. “Baker Mayfield does not keep himself healthy. He doesn’t miss games, though.
“He started every game last year. He was only listed as questionable twice. I went through the week-by-week injury reports after I saw those quotes from Lavonte David. He had a bunch of injuries, a bunch of different body parts showed up.
“Yeah, he was questionable twice, and never missed a start. He refuses to. I think it became a problem in his last year in Cleveland. Because there’s a point where it’s impairing your performance because you’re playing hurt.”
Florio said a toned-down yet still effective Mayfield is a whole lot better than a beat-up, ineffective Mayfield.
And Florio added until Mayfield can force himself to be more careful, the Bucs will always dance on the high wire late in the season hoping Mayfield is healthy enough to be effective.
“Better to just be healthy,” Florio said. “It’s better to just be healthy. You’ve got to find a way to avoid taking those hits, and his toughness becomes a potential liability if it affects his performance.
“And I think that’s what the Buccaneers are struggling with, because [when Mayfield was] healthy early in the year, lights out, like Lavonte said. Later in the year, when he’s struggling to get to the finish line and parts have fallen off and he refuses to take a game off and let the backup play [hurt the Bucs].
“You know, at some point, the starter is sufficiently impaired by injury that it’s better to go with somebody who’s 100 percent and let him play. But I think that’s part of the overall Baker Mayfield experience; it is a part of what makes him great.
“It’s greatness to a fault. It’s stubbornness to a fault. It’s commitment to his craft to a fault because he keeps playing when he shouldn’t be playing because of all the different injuries that he has, and those are just the ones we know about.”
Joe has stated several times the Bucs should have sat Mayfield for a game or two to get him healthy. Even if Mayfield balked, someone should have been the adult in the room.
That’s on the coaches.
But here is the deal: Would the Bucs, with all of their injuries, an offensive line that was riddled with injuries, injuries to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and their No. 1 running back getting beat up and missing time, would the Bucs have jumped out to a 6-2 record if Mayfield played conservatively?
No way. So yeah, the Bucs missed the playoffs last year, in part, because Mayfield was so beat up and playing far less than 100 percent.
Problem is, if Mayfield was neutered, no way the Bucs would have been in the playoff hunt to begin with.
And that’s the double-edged sword you get with Mayfield.

So get a better backup. But then that creates lots of other problems. There’s a subtext here Jose that I don’t think you realized. At least it seems to me there is if you think about all the implications.
April 9th, 2026 at 5:10 am
Prediction :
Mayfield and Godwin on IR by November – no playoffs again – Licht Bowles Glazers have a ready-made excuse for mediocrity – Licht and Bowles safe for yet another year – Glazers roll out Raise the Flags the Sequel to keep the plebs happy and engaged – same old Bucs in 2027 on the march to another Lost Decade – Go Bucs !
April 9th, 2026 at 5:11 am
Protect him and he will rarely ever need to take a real hit. He can run only when there’s an opening instead of trying to avoid a sack.
April 9th, 2026 at 5:18 am
Also with Browning you can be sure they will do this. Browning is a pretty good quarterback.
April 9th, 2026 at 5:19 am
oh and I forgot the Deshaun-Watson-size extension for Baker that puts the team in salary cap hell for the next several years of the Lost Decade in which Bucs fans pray every week for Baker as they did for Tua in Miami
April 9th, 2026 at 6:07 am
Stpetatt is right. Give him protection and pay him.
April 9th, 2026 at 6:19 am
What a piece of crap to say Mayfield and Godwin on IR by November. Same old Bucs in 2027 on the march to another lost decade. Get-Rid-of-Licht. You are one of many fans that wouldn’t know a gift horse if it hit you in the mouth. This team has faced alot of criticism. Our offense was so hamstrung by injuries last season and folks like you, and Joe, gonna put that on Baker’s shoulders? Fair enough. QB has one job, that’s to win games. So I’m thinking Baker knows that, and we’re all going to find out just what kind of QB Tampa Bay has. I already know. He’s one of the best QBs in the league. If we support Baker with an average defense and above average special teams play, and we can field even an average offensive line, then we won’t be spending next offseason looking for a scapegoat.
April 9th, 2026 at 6:19 am
Sounds good to me! And grazie!
April 9th, 2026 at 6:33 am
Unless I missed something on the Org chart, Bakers not responsible for setting the starters for a game.
Baker is stubborn- so let’s blame him.
Baker has heart and is not a quitter – but let’s blame him.
For goodness sake, the decision to start Baker who is obviously injured is 100% on the Head Coach and I would go as far to suggest it’s coaching malpractice to do what Bowles did last year.
April 9th, 2026 at 6:40 am
“If you clip a bird’s wings, you’re basically left with a feathered squirrel.” Huh?
April 9th, 2026 at 6:52 am
Protection isn’t Baker Mayfield problem
The big hits he takes happens when he leave the pocket
He ran for 15 yards against the Houston Texans, instead of sliding
He tried to bulldozer Will Anderson, and he took a humongous shot
He could barely get up afterwards
April 9th, 2026 at 7:03 am
Joe … ‘So yeah, the Bucs missed the playoffs last year, in part, because Mayfield was so beat up and playing far less than 100 percent.’
Hmmm, kinda sounds like you’re using injuries as an excuse Joe. And we all know that’s not allowed; we’ve read it many times on JoeBucsFan.
However, extensive injuries to key players (like QB?) can be a REASON for losing IF the team doesn’t have suitable DEPTH to replace that injured player IMO. We all know that Baker’s stubborn, and he’s not willingly coming off the field unless he literally can’t walk. But that’s when the HC & OC & team medical folks need to say ‘Sorry Baker, enough is enough; sit down’.
Teddy Bridgewater wasn’t exactly a ‘bridge over troubled waters’ last season like a good backup QB should be. But allowing Baker to play injured like he did isn’t the solution either, like we’ve now seen (in both Cleveland & Tampa Bay). I wouldn’t hesitate to plug in Jake Browning though if a similar situation evolves this season. With a solid TEAM around him, I think Jake could keep us in the fight.
April 9th, 2026 at 7:22 am
Puff piece for the over priced extension coming, Baker has 1 great year surrounded by the rest of his mediocre career, not hating, just saying he has been pretty good since he has become a Buc, but to talk about him like he’s as good as Josh Allen Lamar Burrow Herbert Dak Goff Stafford Maye Darnold Mahomes Hurts Jayden is ludicrous, he’s in the Kyler Geno Smith Derek Carr Kirk Cousins Daniel Jones type category
April 9th, 2026 at 7:24 am
The Bucs coaches need to sit him. If they would of sat him in the second half of the year, he could of came back strong at the end of the season. We win the division. We might of lost the games with a back-up but we still lost the games with a injured Baker.
April 9th, 2026 at 7:24 am
There was a 3 game stretch (an entire month since it surrounded the bye) – starting in week 7 vs the Lions, where Mayfield did not have even 1 scramble/rushing attempt. That’s how hurt Baker was last year. He COULDN’T run the ball for an entire month…. due mostly to a knee and simultaneous ankle injuries I believe.
And that wasn’t even his worst injury. Nor was the oblique injury which any QB will tell you makes the simple act of throwing a football an agonizing experience for a couple/few weeks….
Baker separated his left shoulder week 12 vs the Rams and left the field for the remainder of that ugly blowout. Meaning he had torn ligaments that hold the shoulder together and take multiple weeks to months to heal depending on the severity.
But Baker started the following week at home with the Bucs barely beating the lowly AZ Cardinals and then proceeded to lose 4 games in a row to the Saints, Falcons, Panthers and Dolphins – which torpedoed the once promising season and kept the Buccaneers out of the playoffs.
Mayfield threw multiple 4th Quarter Ints during that deadly stretch of close losses in December and generally looked “off” on too many of his throws from week 7 through the entire rest of the season.
You have to respect the ‘competitiveness’ – the attempt at showing ‘toughness’ and ‘leadership’ – but at what point(s) did Mayfield’s insistence on playing through injuries in 2025 hurt his team ‘s chances to win vs help??
These are important discussions that need to be going on behind the scenes this offseason….
April 9th, 2026 at 7:30 am
I disagree. Baker is firmly a tier 1 quarterback and fits right in with that group. After all, the past 3 years he has the most TD’s, right? His stats definitely hold up since he’s been here. Everybody sucks with Cleveland. And if our O-line stays healthy I think Baker may break his own records this year. He is a franchise Pro-Bowl quarterback. I’d rather have him than all your tier 1 QB’s other than Allen, Lamar, Burrow. (Stafford too old).
April 9th, 2026 at 7:37 am
Predicting injuries in April? Nice one.
April 9th, 2026 at 7:44 am
Heart? Joe, you misspelled ego. How can you have heart and be a team guy first when you “play injured” and play at a low level AND help your team lose? Baker isnt a team first guy, if he was, he would sit himself down for a few games to come back healthy and hopefully play better. But Baker doesn’t want to sit because he’s afraid he’ll lose his job.
Joe is saying the loud part out loud, if Baker can’t play like a LB or RB then he can’t play QB. Which means if he cant run, hes ineffective. Hes such a great QB that if he can’t run, the offense doesn’t have a chance. Pathetic. Thats why in the playoffs and late in the season he falls short (thats not a height joke). He can’t play from the pocket and hes not a dynamic running QB like Allen, Jackson and Newton. Defenses won’t let Baker run around in single elimination games.
Baker won’t sit himself when he’s “hurt”, Bowles won’t either and some people still think none of this has anything to do with Mike leaving. This team doesn’t want to win anything significant, it’s all about friends and family having jobs and playing games. As long as Baker is here this team will continue to lose when it matters most.
You’re only as good as your last season in professional sports, not what you did 2-3 years ago. You’re on drugs if you think any owner is paying $200+ million for an injury prone, inaccurate 30+ y/o QB.
April 9th, 2026 at 7:58 am
The premise of this entire article is kind of funny.
Staff was damned if they did, and damned if they didn’t. We were trying to lock up a playoff berth
Also, guts & grit aren’t the only reasons players tough through injuries, some of it has to do with contract incentives and alot of it has to do with pride.
I mean, Sam Darnold can forever claim he won an SB with a banged up oblique, while going 3-0 in games he threw 91 passes, for a combined 672 yards and 5 TDs without turning the ball over.
The bit about “the adult in the room” tickled me a bit, because they say that’s partly why Cleveland moved on from him just in a different context.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:00 am
More twisted words from a Baker hater. You know you could find another team to cheer for, right?
April 9th, 2026 at 8:04 am
And I don’t mean you, Warren. You know your stuff.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:09 am
Stpetem. Baker is not a tier 1 quarterback and Herbert is better than Baker Mayfield as well and you can’t put Baker on the same planet with Mahomes. And stop with the everybody sucks with Cleveland because he had everything in Cleveland when they went to the playoffs and he couldn’t get them over the hump. Baker is with Geno Smith Kirk Cousins Golf range. I think jester’s have you guys thinking he’s a great quarterback like when they say he’s mosey. You guys feed into talk like that and he has heart it’s a lot of players have heart none of that leads to winning a Superbowl. And the injury excuses is running out because that’s not going to save him this year if he doesn’t play better in clutch moments in big games. Baker is 2-9 in prime time games and he said it himself he don’t like night games. And blaming the o line for everything ain’t no excuse either. Baker has ran himself into a lot of sacks because he can’t see over the line that’s why he lead the league in batted ball’s. That’s fact!!
April 9th, 2026 at 8:20 am
He’s not as good from the pocket (on schedule) as he is throwing on the run IMO. Hes not bad from the pocket like Wilson was, he just thrives when running around.
That creates big problems as you get older, like with Wilson. Those legs are gonna go.
Give his mentality it unlikely you can tame that instinct. That’s the issue with giving this guy a guaranteed contract worth 60m per year.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:21 am
It’s probably true that they wouldn’t have started the season 6-2 if Mayfield didn’t put the team on his back. Maybe he wouldn’t have had to play Superman if the rest of the offense hadn’t been so injured and if the defense had played better from the start.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:29 am
I believe most of the damage was done when he ran for so many first downs on third and long when he lowered his shoulder to get those few extra yards. He would have been better off sliding short of the sticks and then maybe go for it on fourth down occasionally. Getting hit in the pocket is not as bad as head on collisions.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:42 am
Joe, you and everyone have been saying the same thing about Baker’ playing injuried has kept the Bucs from contending. Bowles is the HC and needs to rest him. It’s better to lose games with a backup quarterback and rest him for the playoffs where he’s the Bucs only chance of of making it to the Super Bowl 🏈.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:48 am
folks are trying to make baker into lamar jackson lol….
enough with the Baker injury excuse BS….
we missed the playoffs because the QB who everyone wants to extend committed critical turnovers in the 4th quarter in every game in DEC!!!!….thats why we didnt make the playoffs….3 turnover vs the dolphins!!!…yeah lets extend that guy lol
as much hype liam got, it was Dave who got the most outta baker…Dave kept baker on a short leash by running the ball, which kept him healthy…and we actually won a playoff game….thats the production real fans want…PLAYOFF WINS
BROCK>baker
GO BUCS!!!!!
April 9th, 2026 at 8:50 am
Baker is great from the pocket on schedule. That’s almost all he was 2 years ago when he had a pocket and protection. He’s an excellent pocket passer who can create off schedule but that adds a layer of potential chaos to the game, so hopefully he can go back to how he was 2 years ago- and just do the off schedule stuff when absolutely necessary. Also the people calling him inaccurate are nuts.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:53 am
The turnovers happen when off schedule and because both our guards were out so there’s a huge degree of urgency to make a play when the rush is right up in your face instantly. Very tough situation to be in.
April 9th, 2026 at 8:54 am
if baker hits EE2 or CG14 in stride of 2nd down, he wouldnt have to “run” on 3rd down….
enough about the BS injuries, bakers footwork and mechanics were off last year and that was before he got banged up….
there comes a time when a “moxy” QB has to turn into a MATURE QB!!!!
Baker still aint there…he still doesnt realize that in order to win in this league, he needs to use his BRAINS and not his legs(he’s not fast to begin with lol)
GO BUCS!!!!!
April 9th, 2026 at 9:04 am
Say what you want Bakers our QB this year and potentially the next 3-5 years if we win 7 games, doubtful based on most years we aren’t getting a top 3 QB drafting in the teens without mortgaging the future
April 9th, 2026 at 9:12 am
Pickgrin nailed it!
I hope if Baker is that hurt again in the coming season OC Robinson benches Baker. He needs to do it since we don’t have a Head Coach that does his job!
SMH
April 9th, 2026 at 9:15 am
When Baker lets his ego get on the way then he is no longer thinking about the team winning! Bench his a$$ when is needed. The Head Coach needs to earn his money too!!!!!!!!

If the defense plays up to par and the offense plays more efficiently, then Mayfield doesn’t have to resort on these heroics just to win a game. Too many of those 6-2 games were very close where the team was behind at the very end of the game and last minute heroics by Mayfield ended up being the reason we won. The team play in general put him in that position. If our defense is top 10, you can shut out the other team at the end of games, none of this is necessary. Some of this blame is on the coaches and some of it is on Mayfield but I feel a lot of the blame is on the performance of the defense (which goes back to the DC to a high degree). If we draft five to six fresh defenders and do a good job choosing them, we could turn things around.
Granted, injuries have to be at a minimum… once again. Many were saying, including myself, and you can say it every year in any offseason, that the main thing that will kill the Bucs is injuries… rest is history. Everyone could see the team was not very deep in quite a few positions.
April 9th, 2026 at 9:47 am
“The turnovers happen when off schedule and because both our guards were out so there’s a huge degree of urgency to make a play when the rush is right up in your face instantly. Very tough situation to be in.”
This wasn’t the case for every turnover, or the few untouched fumbles that were recovered. Cool story though.
“He’s not as good from the pocket (on schedule) as he is throwing on the run IMO. Hes not bad from the pocket like Wilson was, he just thrives when running around.”
He’s not that much better on the move either, maybe more optimal position given the game scenario or passing concept, but it also lends to the “volatility” of his game.
His first INT of the season came 11 yards off the goal line on first down with the score 31-23 Philly. On a play where he felt pressure from his right while Heck took the defender for a ride, Baker bumps into Luke Haggard while panicking then rolls right and tries to make the pass to Godwin in the endzone off-schedule with 3 defenders and Cade Otton within 4 yards of where he wanted to put the ball…on first down and outside of the pocket.
April 9th, 2026 at 9:50 am
Hmmm. Let’s see. Keep Baker or draft another QB.
What’s the percentage of drafted QB’s that make it ?
Jaboo was a Heisman trophy winner that looked the part.
How’d that work out ?
Were it not for Coen, Trevor would have likely flamed out.
But on the other hand you have Joe Burrow.
What’s it gonna be Glazers ?
Are you feeling lucky ?
April 9th, 2026 at 10:46 am
Licht and the organization as a whole failed to address a glaring need that has existed since Brady retired. The fact is, a serviceable back up QBs is essential. They got by with it in 2003 and 2004, but their luck ran out in 2005. Have they now fixed that? I am not sure.
April 9th, 2026 at 10:47 am
Still shaking my head after all these years remembering Jaboo’s very first pass and last pass with the Bucs.
April 9th, 2026 at 10:52 am
As usual Bee doesn’t have a clue. He says Baker is afraid to sit because he is afraid he’ll lose his job. To who Bee? Who would Baker lose his job to?
813bucboi, finally you have a grasp on reality, Baker isn’t fast but he has something few qb do have, quickness and knowing when to use it. It is why Baker led the league in getting first downs. He rarely gets tackled by the first opponent. He jukes them out of their jock and oopps its a first down. So there’s that little detail.
April 9th, 2026 at 10:55 am
As long as he plays for this head coach he’s gonna suck.
April 9th, 2026 at 11:10 am
Yes baker has heart but as a qb baker carr sucks big time he will fail the bucs and will NEVER win a championship in the nfl you have all seen it he melts like butter when it matters most im jot talking about early in the year when everybody’s all outkast i mean when it matters most
April 9th, 2026 at 11:32 am
I remember when we played Houston last year. They had the #1 defense in the ENTIRE league and it was the 4th quarter and we were behind. I also remember we had the worst line we had had in a long time. They all were hurt and missing in action. It was second and third string OL that day. Anyway, there we were under 2 minutes left and we had 70 yards to score and win. It came down to a 4th down. Baker got the ball and found himself surrounded. Any other qb would have been down and game lost. But ol’ Baker juked and side stepped and low and behold first down. Result, we drove 70 yards in the final minute against the BEST defense the league had and scored the winning TD with 6 seconds to spare. What a game and what a quarterback/leader. Just about that time the Baker haters were saying he couldn’t put together a winning drive in the 4th quarter against a good defense. So he went out with a scrub line against the #1 defense and made them eat their words. As usual they wrong, as usual. Let’s get rid of that guy!!
April 9th, 2026 at 11:44 am
What it is
Hes afraid to lose his job to anyone not named Baker. Use your brain, if someone is secure about their abilities and about their job, then why not take a few games off? What’s the harm? No one can take his job, which it seems like thats what you’re saying, so why rush back when you’re not 100%?
When Burrow and Jackson got injured, did they “show heart” and play through it or did they take games off to heal? Everyone knows no one is taking their job and they do too. It doesn’t make sense. Either you’re too injured to play or the injuries aren’t bad enough for you miss games so they’re not an excuse.
If Baker performed well and the Bucs made the playoffs we wouldn’t be hearing about injuries and other BS excuses. You got posters on here with bar so low for Baker they think 7 wins out of 17 in the worst division in the NFL is good enough for a new contract. My god…some of yall need therapy.

couple questions:
-how many of those “league leading first downs” translated into WINS?….
-If baker has the “quickness” and “knows when to use it”, combined with the fact he “rarely gets tackles by the first opponent”, then why was he so banged up?…lol…

My advice for Baker would be to get a restraining order to keep the Baker Boi(s). Sure, right now it’s cute that they go through your trash, looking to ‘protect’ from the bad people who might find something and use it to criticize you. But nutjob ‘fans’ always turn on you in the end – so, to quote Sapp, keep your head on a swivel, the Boi(s) are legit psychopaths.

“I remember when we played Houston last year. They had the #1 defense in the ENTIRE league and it was the 4th quarter and we were behind. I also remember we had the worst line we had had in a long time.”
First off, it was week 2.
Second, after week 1 Houston ranked 8th in points allowed with 14.
Also, funny how you left out being behind to a team we allowed to score 19 points all game.
We had a total of 10 drives. Scored 14 points combined on our first 2 drives on 7 of our last 8 drives after scoring we went
-Punt
-Punt
-Punt
-Punt
-Missed FG
-Blocked Punt
-Punt
Before Rachaad White scored a TD with 9 seconds left in the game on our 10th possession.
You guys love flipping the sensationalism switch and talking erroneously like we were in some steep holes in those early games, when a big part of it-just like the Dolphins game months later-was inactivity on offense.
Having to “come back” in a game you hold your opponent is ridiculous to me, glad we won, but that was the model for our offense all season long. What sucked for us, is that we didn’t find ways to win those close games with any surety.
Also that game didn’t shut anybody up, it’s not the “ah-ha” ya’ll think it is.

Darnold is not in the same category as Josh Allen, etc. He was a third string QB for the Panthers and was a second string cheap contract at Seattle until Geno was benched. That’s what a great offensive line will do for a journeyman QB
April 9th, 2026 at 6:55 pm
Baker Mayfield just isn’t good enough, plain and simple. LVD saying he “believes ” injuries played a part sounds more like avoiding the real issue than actually explaining it. Injuries happen across the league, good QBs still find ways to produce. At some point, you have to call it what it is instead of making excuses.

Baker Mayfield is great.

813, talking about himself again–“put down the pipe”. Once again projection. You boys just can’t help tellin on yourselves. Oh I’m certain Baker was in the top 5 last year. If you can strain your brain to go back 6 months ago he was everybody’s MVP choice. So I’m not sure what you are loling about. Maybe you just don’t like the fact that our qb, when not injured and even with a terrible OL and back up WR is good enough to be in the TOP 5. I’m sure that’s it. Regardless he will be here for another 5 years so settle down and enjoy the ride and try to get used to being called out when you say anything stupid.

813BucBoi has definitely set his sights on the brass ring for leading the charge against Mayfield with all of his irrational rantings.
One of his rantings that mystify me are his often repeated comment footnotes — “BROCK>baker” (and then “GO BUCS”). Ambiguous to say the least.
Well dude, why don’t you take your loyalties west. We won’t miss you.

Bee is just as pathetic posting about posting anti-Baker propaganda on Bucs instagram posts as he is here. Yes, we see you. And we all know why you’re doing it and why you seemingly still defend Winston.
