Mike Evans To Leave The Buccaneers For The 49ers

The unthinkable has happened.
Mike Evans’ 12-season run in Tampa is over.
Just hours after free agency opened today at noon, Evans agreed to a deal with the 49ers, per Adam Schefter. The reported terms are three years.
Joe aches — and Joe aches for fellow Buccaneers fans.
Yeah, some fans will cheer a new era and the Bucs now having more money without Evans to sign younger players. Most Bucs fans, however, will stand with Joe, knowing the Bucs got worse as a team today and became a lot less fun.
Two years ago, Evans was celebrating a new Bucs contract and saying he wants to be a “Buc For Life.”
All kinds of blame will be thrown around by fans. Todd Bowles, Jason Licht and Team Glazer are going to take their share of uppercuts. Evans will catch some stray middle fingers, as well. The Bucs did want to sign him but didn’t get it done.
Man, Joe is going to need quiet time to mourn this loss.

My heart hurts but the Niners are giving him a three year deal with (I predict) a signing bonus that the Bucs could not possibly match with Godwin, J-Mac, and EE in place. It would make no sense for the Bucs to break the bank on him.

Evans was always going to test the FA market and he got the right opportunity with the right team.
As much as this is painful because he’s my favorite Buc off all time, I think it’s what was best. Dude couldn’t catch a 5 yard put without limping to the sidelines.

Godwin, Ebuka, Jalen and Bucky are some good weapons. And donāt forget Cade has shown he can play when we had injuries. Hate to see ME leave and he will always be a Buc and in the Ring of Honor one day. But great teams know when to move on and ME has had significant injuries the last 2 years.

One of the greatest Bucs ever but he wanted to compete and get his last shot at a huge pay day. Good for him. The Bucs will be just fine. We have a stable full of WRs and we need to focus on getting an Edge rush, OG, and add depth to DT. Eva is getting old and Kancey is brittle.

Ok, reality now. This IS a legacy move. Evans performed over a hall of fame label for a long time, and even entering last season there was debate whether he really is HoF bound.
Evans believes he cements his legacy by putting on a more respected uniform.

Didn’t take Evans & the 49ers long to come to terms on a contract. Mike said all the right things (Buc for life, etc), but it came down to what it always comes down to … money & ego.
Mike got a multi-year contract at age 33 (good for him), probably some excellent $$$ to go with that, and a chance to be on a team that’ll be competitive for a championship.
I’m personally not ‘mourning the loss’ Joe. Mike got what he wanted, and the Bucs couldn’t offer that. Good for Mike; now th Bucs need to move on. We can free up around $100 mil total in salary CAP to fix our problems & be competitive in 2026. Well, UNLESS Jason chooses the ‘cheap approach’ yet again. And if he does and we have another losing season, I sure do hope that the Glazers figure out this time where the problem lies.

I’m stunned! I never thought I’d see the day. Fans always want their franchise players to retire with the team, but it didn’t happen with Sapp or Lynch. For the Patriots it didn’t happen with Brady. It didn’t happen with Montana. It didn’t happen with Favre or Rodgers.
No matter what the super fans say about this team, the fact of the matter is that Mike Evans believes he’s closer to another ring with SF than he is with the Bucs. That’s an indictment on the entire organization.

All good things come to an end. It was the right move for ME13. He goes to an ultra-competitive division, but the 49āers also have a better coach and a team that plays well on both sides of the ball. Plus they dropped a nice 3-year bag in his lapā¦best of luck to you Mike. Just make sure when youāre ready to call it a career that you sign a one day contract so you retire a Buccaneer (and have your bust in Canton filed as a Buccaneerā¦you always will be in most fans hearts!)

My bet is that it was never about money. He wanted to see the Bucs make a move that showed they were competing for a Super Bowl. 49ers currently are in a better position before they signed ME. With his addition they probably get another game or half game bump. Then if they make the trade with the Eagles for Carter to improve their D line their odds jump again.

I’m grateful as a long time Bucs fan for the years of memories of Mike Evans wearing the uniform, and doing so much in the community. He’s been a class act since the day he was drafted. I look forward to seeing him inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Buccaneer! Thanks for all you’ve done. And he left the team with a great group of receivers to keep the offense going strong into the future.

I know you wanted him Joe, but this is the best outcome. His hamstring is far, far too questionable to pay him what the 49ers are going to. The Bucs have an outstanding WR core already and still have Godwin. If we canāt win without Evans then this team is cooked anyway. We need to be signing defensive players, like Anzalone. Gainwell is coming off a 1000 yd rushing/receiving season and is only 26, replacing White. Honestly, losing Jamel Dean was a bigger problem. The Bucs need to take this cash and buy defensive players and possibly some O-line depth.
Reigning Otton was a good move too, as the guy is absurdly consistent and his blocking has gotten progressively better each season. No need to role the dice on a guy like Austin Hooper.
If the Bucs play their cards right, Evans will be regretting going to SF and the Bucs will finish stronger than the 49ers. Not that I wish Evans any ill.

Will always love Mike and am grateful for the years he gave us. Two catches stand out, and weirdly they were both in losses.
1. Tom Brady’s throw to him with only a few minutes left against the rams in 2021 to bring us instantly back into the game.
2. Same but from Baker at the end of the half against the Lions in 2023.
Bonus: The catch to get to 1,000 yards for 11 straight years.

I wanted him to sign from a nostalgic point of view, but I guess ultimately that’s all it really was. He hasn’t been exceptional in years, and he can’t really stay healthy. I believe I just really wanted him to stay a Buc, but the truth is, Mike just seemed to be taking up space on the field more than making plays this year. We’ll be okay. It’s not like he was going to be a complete game changer anymore like he was in the past. Plus, I donāt believe Purdy is as good as the NFL wants to believe he is. The 9ers supporting cast kinda fools people into thinking Purdy is better than he actually is. Wish Mike We’ll, but I think he may regret this, especially if he doesn’t win a championship. GO BUCS!

I donāt know what the Bucs are doing. They basically chose a perpetually injured Godwin over Evans. I said in 2022 after Brady left they needed to blow up the whole thing. I still feel that way Licht, Bowles, everyone needs to go. Instead of blowing it up while they still had valuable assets, they chose this NFL purgatory of mediocrity, where they stay just competitive enough to compete in their lousy division, but get farther and farther from a Super Bowl. Its job security: Licht knows he canāt survive a full rebuild. Until we get rid of him this team is gonna keep slowly bleeding to death.

Ghost ended up on another team in his last year and had to watch diminishing skills is a tough watch.

Whether itās a CEO or custodian or NFL player, there will be a tipping point the causes him to say, āEnough!ā The 3rd & 28 did it for Mike Iām convinced. This points to the fact that TBās defense quit and didnāt care. Those who quit are still on the team and are cancers. The HC is still here, too. Where there is zero accountability great players will leave. This is a strong indictment about the Bucs FO and pathetic HC. Iām not surprised as ME is a winner and is attracted to those committed to greatness. May the message of accountability find its place with the owners. It begins with them.

For those saying that we should now have money to improve the teamā¦ I say how? It does matter who you bring in for Def or Off, as long as this team is coached by Todd Fning Bowles, we will NEVER win a championship PERIOD. If your goal is to break .500 and sneak into the playoffs. By all means, enjoy Bowles in all his glory. But just remember, the consummate team first guy just walked out the door because he knew this.

My take is this; It wasn’t about the $$$$. ME played with a home town discount here on his past contracts. At one point CG made more than Mike. This was about Bowles and the front office and the owners and the new OC. He’s going to a better overall situation. I think Baker will be wanting to leave also. I don’t see ME13 choosing to live in SF CA and pay CA income tax over Tampa FL. This is about the 49ers organization and a real shot at a SB. Congrats John Lynch.
I may be wrong but I think the Bucs are done.

I knew it was a āDid Dealā once I heard that John Lynch and the Niners were in hot pursuit. It is a straight-up INDICTMENT on Baker Mayfield specifically, but also of this current Bucs āLICKT & BOWLESā regime. Itās mind-blowing that LICKT and the Glazers refused to pay THAT (with zero state income taxes, & STILL couldnāt get there), especially when supposedly, they are already āon-the-hookā for $13-MIL in dead cap money, regardless. It makes NO sense.
They BETTER get a 3rd-around Comp Pick BACK. I am ok with him leaving.
He certainly has earned the right to close out his career on his terms.
The harsh reality though is that his last 2 seasons were plagued by injury and at his age that is not trending in the right direction…same holds true for Lavonte.
The NFL is a violent sport and is so tough on the human body expecially as they age.
I don’t remember seeing the amount of serious injuries in ther NFL than in the last few years.
I doubt this decision ages well for Mike…but if he can stay healthy, he will put up his numbers…but for 3 years?.

i knew something was up last year when they had, and still do have, 2 big tall bodied receiver projects on the PS roster…check for yourselves…2 guys built in the mike evans type mold…they’re on the PS roster from what i last know…they seem like scrubs – but i wouldn’t doubt one has the potential to be our 6th or 7th receiver next year…
i was sniffing this out last year, but didn’t want to ever think the team would let our best offensive player of all time mosey on outta here

First of all, Mike Evans is my favorite Buc of all time by a mile. He deserves to be able to play wherever he wants to play. He suffered through how many bad seasons with how many bad quarterbacks? Good for him.
The problem is that he went to chase the best opportunity. And that opportunity was NOT here. Unfortunately, Jason Licht and the Glazers hooked the Bucs up with Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles. Bruce because he pulled that sleazy business with retiring or whatever and sticking the Bucs with Coach Mediocre for 5 years.
I do NOT want to hear one more syllable about a Buc Man or whatever. The one person who typified that in my opinion just left because of 3rd and 38.
There are a list of things that will make me happy. New Ownership, New GM and New Head coach. Either that or take your team get out of our city you carpetbaggers.
