“There’s A Switch That Flips”

January 31st, 2026

Baker Mayfield likes a fiery hot kind of coach.

That was the message the Bucs’ franchise quarterback sent when discussing his new offensive coordinator this week.

Tampa Bay announced the hire of Zac Robinson to call plays, and Mayfield hopped on The Rondé Barber Show to share various takes on Robinson.

Mayfield explained how he knew of Robinson from afar as a kid and then found him as a mentor on the Rams in 2022.

“You know, [Robinson] was a guy that when I first met him in person in L.A., growing up an Oklahoma fan, I used to watch all their games,” Mayfield said. “So I watched him play at Oklahoma State and he was lighting it up. And then just getting to L.A., you know I already had a respect for him in terms of the football aspect, but not knowing how he would be as a coach.

“[Robinson is] real laid back but he’s got a fire within him. So like he comes off as very monotone [and] chill, but if you make him angry, there’s a switch that flips. And I was like, ‘Ok, there is something in there that I like.’ And just getting to know him then and him having to obviously tutor me on the fly.”

Interesting to hear Mayfield say he likes a fire in his coach. Did he see that — or not see it — in fired fall guy offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard? Does he see that in Todd Bowles that fans rarely do?

Joe’s just glad Mayfield feels great about what’s next for the Bucs offense. A quarterback needs to feel confident.

Todd Bowles switch has been under repair for too long. Remarkable that TB is still on Bucs payroll.

  2. SlyPirate Says:

    Unfotunately It’s the Wrong Switch.

4th Quarter … Game on the Line … FLIP THE SWITCH … INT … Gameover

Wasn’t it 4 or 5 games in a row? I know it was our last playoff game.

Sorry, Baker. Too many of us remember the days of Jameis Winston. Charasmatic QB, makes crazy great plays, guys love him, loses the game with late turnovers.

Some guys are just wired to lose.

  3. Hawk Says:

If the Buc offense can start scoring 35 points/game, they will have a shot at taking the division back. Not a great shot, but a shot nonetheless.

  4. Paco Says:

The Bucs don’t need to score 35 @Hawk but they do need to do better than 21st in the league total offense or 18th in scoring. We averaged 21.4 ppg for the season – 18.28 ppg over the last 7 games.

I think Zac is going to be good for Baker and the O. Best option we had.

  5. Bee Says:

Firey or calm doesn’t matter, results do. We’ll see what the offense looks like in camp and take it from there. Let’s see if the Bucs can keep Mike. If not, it’s gonna be a long season.

  6. Been there since the beginning Says:

Todd Bowles kinda keeps it under raps on tape and really dead to things during the game at times when Bruce Arians would’ve had heartattack over is weird to. He’s like a cardboard poster on the sideline .haha

  7. Irish Laughter Says:

When Baker is great, he is really great. When he is mediocre, he is really bad. Most professionals build their confidence and mental toughness through being consistent, dependable, hard working and tough. Baker is tough and probably hard working. The other traits he needs to work on. Unfortunately, coach Bowles is still in charge and who knows if he can motivate his staff and players to real their full potential. Keeping it real in Ireland.
