Are Todd Bowles And Baker Mayfield Connected?

“Baker, let’s ball out and shut these fools up.”
Now this was an interesting observation from a man living away from Tampa Bay on the near future of the Bucs.
Joe has been on record that the smartest move Todd Bowles made has Bucs head coach, maybe one of the smartest calls for any Bucs coach, was him hounding AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to sign then-free agent Baker Mayfield.
Who knew Mayfield would become the heart and soul of the team? (Remember when the Bucs swore Kyle Trask was in a neck-and-neck battle with Mayfield for the starting job? Fun times!).
However, after such a disappointing 2025 for both Bowles and Mayfield, do they need each other to succeed to extend their Tampa Bay days beyond 2026? Saad Yousuf of The Athletic seems to think so.
Yousuf is of the mind that if Bowles or Mayfield has another bad season, (if Mayfield has a bad year, that pretty much guarantees Bowles will have a bad year), then both could be gone from Tampa Bay in 2027.
One thing that has snuck up on [the Bucs] is Baker Mayfield’s contract. Next season is the final year of Mayfield’s current deal. He’s worth it for his current price tag, but the question will be how much he’s looking for on his next deal, and how high the Bucs are willing to go, especially with uncertainty looming at head coach.
The implication here is Team Glazer may be looking at a full-blown reboot that if one or both have bad years. New coach and possibly a new quarterback, too.
“This Joe” has a hunch that’s why Mike McDaniel, in part, chose the Chargers over the Bucs. Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert aren’t going anywhere in 2027. So there’s more security there for McDaniel.
If Mayfield has a bad season, with all the expected quarterbacks in the 2027 draft, Joe suspects a potential Bucs housecleaning would include Mayfield.
Joe sure hopes Mayfield doesn’t leave that back door open.

Deebooo has a point on players in a contract year, they tend to ball out, not get distracted like guys who just got paid. If the Buc get all there players back on offense, that gives Baker a fighting chance to prove himself now that everyone has their doubts. Licht needs to get some quality depth on OL and the Bucs ought to do a house cleaning on trainers and conditioning coaches like they did with some of the assistant coaches. There were way too many injuries just to be coincidence or is there a chance that Bowles “Camp Cupcake” kind of sets players up to get injured? A back up qb is a must too. Baker will play hurt/crippled and this has been proven twice now; in Cleveland and in Tampa and it resulted in 2 lost seasons. Still cannot believe Bowles was retained but we are there as fans. The worst thing that can happen is another 8-9 year which is what Todd’s average record is. On the bright side, if Baker has a stellar year, he gets paid and the Bucs win the South with a 10-7 record, if it really comes apart; the Bucs go 3-14 and are suddenly in the Arch Manning sweepstakes maybe even winning it like the Raiders did in the Mendoza sweepstakes of tanking teams in 2025.

They are not connected. I give Mayfield some blame.for last season, but he has had two strong seasons so Im ready to chalk it up to oline injuries, OC being vanilla and not using wr strengths. Everyone calling baker out dont remember what its like to be in QB purgatory. Be careful bc with all the crap with constant OC turnovers, if Mayfield has another good season, why choose us?

Of course Bowles and Baker are connected. They’re the unquestioned leaders of this team. Under their leadership how has this team performed when the season is on the line? I’ve been saying this since the Detroit playoff loss.
How is the decision-making from Bowles and Baker in the 4th qtr of games, especially in the playoffs, leading this team to a chip? Look at the 2nd Atl game. Bucs up 14 and Baker throws a pick and on the next drive he can’t complete a routine throw on 3rd down. Then there’s Bowles who’s defensive scheme gives up those 14 pts (3rd and 28) to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
These 2 are a match made in hell. They always find ways to lose, both of them, no matter what team they’re on at their respective positions. If the owners stick with these 2 it’s because they want the same results or worse, there’s no other way to spin it.

This team spent years neglecting defensive talent for first round centers and receivers and it’s caught up to us in a big way. Especially when dang near every player on this high powered offense was on the bench instead of on the field last year. Bowles and Baker are still standing. And they don’t even care what any of us think. Darn right they’re connected. They might not be the best fighters but they’re ready for a fight. Grinders at heart, both of them. Opponents this year better pack their lunch. Maybe their dinner too. Patience is hard earned. Ain’t nothing worthwhile easy. Most of these commenters don’t know what that means. Never will. Bowles and Baker do. The Bucs story with Bowles and Baker is just getting started. I like Jason Licht too. As I said weeks ago Baker has some cards to play. If the next OC doesn’t please him he could ask for a trade. That’s the worst case scenario for the front office and Baker surely knows that. The Bucs don’t have to trade him of course but a trade request would turn everything upside down. The big question is; Does Bakers contract have a no trade clause ? I’m thinking it wasn’t really considered at the time.

Personally, I think Baker was injured/ battered – largely due to the O-line being a fragmented mess. He was bailing us out over and over with crazy scrambles. I have always believed that QBs that run like that have a half life that goes away pretty quickly. They take too much damage. If the line is healthy and/or we have depth thats quality we’ll be fine. Not having a competent backup QB was absolutely irresponsible as well.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it Bowles threw Mayfield under the bus. No matter what he says Mayfield has to be resentful. Another factor is if Mayfield has a few bad games Bowles will replace him. That’s not a good way to start the year off with your quarterback feeling that his coach does not have his back
Even if everything Bowles said was true a good leader would have said it in private. Since they kept Bowles they should trade Mayfield , get what they can, start the rebuild.

Exactly, pupplebeard. Baker must have been playing on defense when the season ended with the 3rd and 28 debacle. According to some of these clowns Baker was supposed to win every game when the defense gave up a late touchdown or field goal with very little time left in the game.

As a long suffering Browns fan who observes all of your comments, it is safe to say: 1) We Browns fans would take Baker back in a heartbeat. 2) He is not a loser everywhere he goes- people like Bee represent the worst of Baker haters and won’t acknowledge Baker’s many successes throughout his life and in the NFL 3) Yes, Tampa had many obvious offensive injuries to deal with this year 4) The Tampa Bay defense is just not very good. Mayfield’s “bad year” was statistically identical to Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, and 4 other top ten QB’s. The only outliers in 2025 were Stafford, Maye, Goff and Prescott.
Spin it any way you want ,but Baker’s biggest “sin” in 2025 was trying to play through obvious injuries. Watched all the playoff games filled with countless QB turnovers. The difference between those teams and Tampa is that any turnover in Tampa is met with howls and despair. The good teams, with real NFL defenses, just shrug turnovers off and get back into the game. There is a misguided belief that Tampa defense is loaded with “talent.” It is not. Even AWjr., a Pro Bowl nominee, is not a competent NFL safety. Tampa should try to get a draft pick for this guy ASAP.

4,500 yards, 43 TDs, 70+% completion percentage sounds pretty darn good to me. And we once again had a bottom 10 defense. The point I’m making is that shipping baker off shouldn’t be the priority. There’s so many issues with the Bucs that are bigger problems than Baker. Plenty of teams have won super bowls with worse quarterbacks. We have an awful defense, awful special teams, a new OC every year, and an aging receiver core that gets injured to often. The idea that Baker is solely responsible for our failures or that he could never take us anywhere is an overreaction if you ask me. (ig no one asked tho lol)

I think you have some tunnel vision 813. None of those games should’ve been lost from a single turnover, but the defense made sure our opponents were within one score no matter what, and Also gave our opponents full control of the clock. Our special teams made sure that our opponents constantly started at the 50. Whether you want to admit it or not, we had a top three scoring offense the year before this, and Baker was a huge reason why we did. Dumping Baker when we could be making way smarter moves for the team would be a bad idea. Also Kirk cousins led the league in fumbles for 2024; he had 13. GO BUCS

Baker’s season and the Buc’s fortunes this year changed on the Mike Evans clavicle injury after the catch and then drop (hard to hold when you land extended and your collarbone snaps) against Detroit. Changed the entire receiver and play calling dynamics and sucked the air out of the team. Baker remains the answer.

Been pointing this out for months, while so-called ‘Bucs fans’ were rooting for the team to miss the playoffs because they thought it would get Bowles fired. But because of Baker’s deal, fully guaranteed next year at $42M, he’s not going anywhere. Meanwhile, it was Baker who tanked the season losing those 4 games in a row where he was absolutely terrible. If you’re going to believe that Baker was awful from week 7 on because he was ‘hurt’ – then why are you punishing Bowles? Over the final 6 games, Bowles defense was 10th in the NFL in points allowed, while Baker and the offense were 26th in points scored. If ‘Baker was hurt’ is real, then all he has to do is get healthy and you’re back in the playoffs. This was the point I was making as so-called ‘Bucs fans’ were rooting for the Bucs to lose because they were too stupid to read the room and realize Bowles wasn’t going anywhere.

So there’s your overlap – Baker has lead the NFL in interceptions the same number of times as Winston.
Some more fun facts… Winston has more rushing TDs than Baker (13 vs 11), and a higher catch percentage (100% vs 50%), a higher yards per catch (33ypr vs 17ypr) and more receiving TDs (1 vs 0).
Baker, meanwhile, does edge out Winston in rushing yards (1583 vs 1320) and has a higher average per rush (4.3 vs 4.0), plus Baker leads in fumbles (68 vs 61).

Comparing Jameis Winston to Baker Mayfield is crazy. Baker has never outright lead the league in Interceptions btw, he tied. Jameis ACTUALLY lead the league in Interceptions. The statements about both leading the league once is very general. While Baker did tie for the lead with 16. Jameis lead the league with freaking 30. The other stat that got Jameis cut was the amount of INT’s that ended up being pick-sixes. Jameis threw 14 Pick sixes as a buccaneer, and set a single season pick six record (7). Baker hasn’t even thrown a pick six as a Buccaneer. Would you rather have Jameis Winston with 1st ranked stats on passing yards and yards per attempt while throwing 30 picks (a third of them being housed) or have Baker being top 3 in all of those stats last year, but with HALF of the picks, ZERO of them being pick sixes??? Baker has had some rough moments this year, but he’s been a better Buccaneer than Jameis was.
FUN FACT! Baker had the 4th ranked qbr last year; 10th is not his best.

They better draft Baker’s replacement and better move up to get one. Whether Baker has a good or bad year I doubt he’ll get a 2nd contract because he’ll command more than he’s worth and what the Glazers will be willing to pay. Hopefully Bowles will be gone after this year and maybe then we can get a real head coach.

Wish DBBF99, Munch, and his clown colleagues would go away and not come back. The rest of us will continue to support Mayfield and his second highest NFL TD pass total during his 3 years at Tampa. These guys have been ignored at work over the years and have had a hard time being taken seriously by normal people. Joebucsfan provides a platform for them to 1) feel like they belong to something; and, 2) to pretend that they are saying something sensible. It’s not working.

So if Baker doesn’t get extended his contract is up around the same time the Panthers need to make a decision on Bryce Young.
I’m a Baker fan and happy he is my qb, but I don’t place him in the top elite category. He can win but he needs help. I can be honest with that fact.
For people who want Baker gone, if things go south and we have a new coach and God knows who at qb you better be honest with yourselves as well. You are embracing four win seasons and at least three years before we see the postseason again. Embrace it.

Remember that Baker posted 2nd most TDS and 3rd most yards of all those names over the last 3 full years. Second, look at those names again. This year with a 2nd and 3rd string OL he was ranked #1 for 6 weeks. Get him the starting OL and he will be ranked #1 again only he’ll be ranked #1 the whole season. He will also stay on top of the playoff passer rating. And stay leading the league in least playoff turnovers. In other words he is money in the playoffs

Typical of Munch to continually use the quarterback rating system the NFL won’t even recognize. All 5 Baker haters continually use and say things that have no meaning or relevance in the real football world. Why won’t the NFL recognize that system? Because ESPN won’t be honest and tell the NFL how they arrive at the numbers. No one knows the metrics they use. Apparently ESPN doesn’t have much faith in their system. So no one does but munch.

Yeah, and by the way BM6 has led Mahomes in just about every metric since 2023. It’s why he was ranked #1 last year, top 5 in 2024 and top 10 in 2023. He is getting better every year.

Baker had a catastrophic year in 25. Unforgivable misses and interceptions at crucial times cost the Bucs a playoff berth. Baker also made many fantastic plays to keep us in those games despite poor play calling and disastrous offensive line play. Baking needs better coaching to adjust his mentality when it comes to protecting the ball. Grizz wasn’t it. He was much better with Coen all be it barely acceptable. Baker is alternatively great and bad much like Winston but less so. Baker is right on the edge of greatness. Could go either way. If you can coach the mistakes out you have a winner. Make or break year in 26. Same for Bowles except the talent level isn’t there with Todd.
