Major Screwup By Antoine Winfield, Jr.

December 12th, 2025

Safety Antoine Winfield, Jr., with no receiver behind him, is about 10 yards off the receiver as Kirk Cousins releases the football on 4th-and-14 during the Falcons’ game-winning drivfe.

So Todd Bowles would not name who made the “big blunder that was inexcusable” on 4th-stand-14 during the Falcons’ game-winning drive last night.

The Bucs’ head coach wouldn’t tell a reporter who asked and suggested he watch the film.

Well, the film is clear. Antoine Winfield, circled above, defined soft coverage as Kirk Cousins released the throw. Winfield was 9-plus yards away from the target. And some folks wonder why a segment of NFL think the league is rigged.

Joe swears Bowles has his defensive backs so terrified of giving up a big play that it leads to this kind of mistake — with no receiver behind Winfield.

No, Joe is not taking blame from Winfield. He’s not paid $20 million per year to pull a Division II college stunt with the game on the line.

  1. Jerseybuc Says:

He’s been a super disappointment since he got paid with only a few good game sprinkled in

  2. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

    Thanks for the film screenshot!

May I ask if Winfield toon questions in the locker room this week, or did he bolt like last week? He’s the top paid safety in the league, needs to play like it.

Where’s Waldo Winfield? It’s embarrassing. He’s been invisible outside of the first couple games.

  3. Henry Says:

Winfield got his bag, oh, so did coach Blows. Nothing to play for, just go through the motions. And yes, I too believe the NFL is dirty.

  4. NCbucfan Says:

Bench him if Tykee is back next week. Thats how you get the message across. Unbelievable!

  5. Rover Says:

I mean seriously, what else is there to cover??. I truly despise this scheme and the players on defense. I guarantee they dont practice hard. This season is a wash. Its over.

  6. Truth be Told Says:

This guy AW has been Overpaid since he got paid. How do we get out of his contract?

It is obvious that he is One of the Major problems besides that Putrid Pass defense that is the reason this team Stinks. Time to Go Todd! Enough is Enough!

  7. Tucker Says:

Major screw up by the organization they didn’t make bowels hire a DC this defense hasn’t been good in a good long while scheme is trash that soft zone coverage is making me puke Todd doesn’t have the spine to be a head coach. Hey Joe where is the article about the genius move.to pass on second down instead of running it to get to the two minute warning with a falcons team with zero timeouts. This team is incompetent from the floor up.

  8. LVMYBUCS Says:

That’s what happens to some players they get paid and they start to lax out. I don’t think Winfield is that type of player I just thing he sees what we all are seeing and is just like bah whatever

  9. NCbucfan Says:

He’s a great blitzer and has forced quite a few fumbles, but he is a liability in coverage.

  10. LVMYBUCS Says:

“Major Screw-up ” by this ownership I would say, they never should have let Todd Bowles be the head coach

  11. BayouBullet Says:

    Liam is 9-4 in Jacksonville

We made our bed and now we’re laying in 💩💩💩💩

  12. Kgh4life Says:

    Trade AWJ and zyon

  13. Tucker Says:

With the coaching malpractice I’m supposed to believe these coaches can teach anything to these players.

  14. Leopold Stotch Says:

This is truly disappointing. I defended him cuz he was hurt. No more. And he’s a captain? Come on.

  15. deez Says:

i understand the todd hate, but players were in a position to execute they didn’t, i wouldn’t put this lost on him.

  16. SteveK Says:

Trade Winfield and Baker for Burrow! Only move from Baker if you get an upgrade.

  17. Bee Says:

This is his what, 7th season as DC and an all-pro player is lost in his defense. Smh

  18. Scott Says:

It’s OK maybe Winfield will make the game saving play in Carolina so all of this will get forgotten about

  19. Dubcity6 Says:

Bowles deserves blame but NOONE could do better with these clowns. Name a good LB or a good CB or a good DL (besides Vea)…. heck, name an average player.. you cant.. theyre all terrible

  20. Oxycondomns Says:

    they didn’t fire bowles yet?

  21. Dacake Says:

That is our COVID defense. Stay at least 6 feet from everyone on the other team.

  22. common sense Says:

if players aren’t executing the way the coach wants them to, on 4th and 14 to WIN THE GAME, CALL A FREAKING TIME OUT

  23. Fred McNeil Says:

I fell asleep with the BUCS up by 2 scores. I woke up figuring the BUCS won. I’m glad I fell asleep. You don’t want to be awake during surgery. The BUCS performed a win-ectomy last night. The season did not survive

  24. Bucnbeers Says:

This team needs to be dismantled. Keep only a handful of players and rebuild with a new GM. Jason Licht has become complacent.

  25. Kayla Says:

Hire an up and coming , young, energetic offensive minded HC who will have a fairly good OL (when all healthy) to work with and young weapons like Irving, Egbuka, and McMillan to build around and a veteran DC who won’t over complicate schemes and ask players to do things they can’t do. And his first season cut all non-hackers and take your lumps.

  26. SB~LV Says:

    SS
    sheet show

  27. Popmike66 Says:

Joe, my opinion is, and opinions are like rearends, everybody has one but these are the same guys on defense who was play decent football against top teams and went 5-1 now thats reversed. Something wrong at One Buc Place. I keep hearing accountability

  28. Oxycondomns Says:

What is interesting is this now being brought to attention, its been happening for years but arians , canales, and coen carried the defense

  29. Ricki Says:

till we get new coach is not players fault, our coash is o incompetent that Galzers hired ppl to be in his ear for everything. they should have hired another head coach i guess. but i am glad finally ppl are seeing things that were being covered but Mayfield and our former OCs. and Joe was about time you open your eyes and see Bowles for the scam
    bag that he is.

  30. Zoocomics Says:

When I look at our defense, I don’t see one superstar. David is too damn old at this point, but Winfield, he is supposed to be THAT guy, and I don’t see it. He looks like the same player he was a rookie, solid and typically does his job, but he’s not making superstar plays consistently, he just has not leveled to the status of being one of the best safeties in the NFL.

Just to remind everyone on here, at the time he signed his new contract, Winfield’s deal was the richest in NFL history for a Safety. That is to imply that he IS the best safety in the NFL. Licht has the audacity to even brag about it!

Does anyone here think he’s playing like one of the best safeties in the NFL?

  31. BigZ Says:

I thought AWJ was ok coming out of Minnesota. He played well in his first contract and deserved a raise, but not the highest. Give me Hamilton in Bmore all day long. That said, he got an injury pass last year. This year? He looks disinterested. The fix a coaching change or move him. At the end of the day, he’s a safety. Not one of the most important players on the field.

I’ve said for years, JL makes some bad picks and second contract decisions.

What has JL done for the QB position? After JW, got lucky with Tom for a stop gap. Drafted Kyle, and took a chance on Bake. He should be using 5th and 6th rounders to land a back or a diamond in the rough. That’s one part of drafting a NFL qb.

He also has done little at the LB position. Now it shows.

  32. Bobby M. Says:

It’s telling the secondary players who Bowles has tried to highlight in his defense AND got these guys contracts are now the biggest liabilities. That’s not a normal dynamic and for whatever reason you’re either going to have to fire the coach or get rid of those players. Realistically it’s probably going to be Bowles. Unfortunately he should have shown the fire he displayed tonight, 6 losses ago. He played cool and calm, now looks inept and panicked. Players have tuned him out, it’s over for the defense. Grizzard and the offense will have to ball out but I don’t see that happening when our QB can’t even drop back without a defender right there blowing up play after play after play.

  33. Atrain Says:

    Here we go

    Who’s fault is it

    This player
    That player

The Dirty Birds scored 29 points on Bowles Defense

    He didn’t want a DC

He Is in charge of Defense and Team

    Bowles is the Problem 100%

    Please Stop the Excuses
    Lay blame where it belongs

TODD BOWLES SUCKED IN NY AND HERE

  34. Chuckys Bucs Says:

Not just on Todd Bowles. If players can’t find winning a championship motivating then nothing can.

Baker hasn’t played well, but he’s also one of the few on this team that cares beyond the paycheck.

This is how Brady’s last season was.

  35. Will Says:

Ive never understood why if you’re gonna play a soft zone on 4th down just sit at the sticks and keep everything in front of you come up and make a sure tackle no need to go for the big hit. This team is soft and that fact that Todd is still allowed to call the defense shows that those in control of the team don’t truly care about the product on the field. This defense has been terrible for a long time and he’s been in control the entire time. Best game the defense played was in the Superbowl and he actually turned everyone loose and played aggressive. Not sure what reporter asked him after the game why didn’t he stay aggressive on their final drive and he said something regarding worried about them running a screen or something like that. Todd your defense sucks at zone go out being aggressive not soft.

  36. FortMyersDave Says:

Every week, someone makes a boneheaded play. It seems like the players have become slack, no attention to detail. Bowes sounded exasperated in his tirade last night but he has had to have been aware of these issues before last night, yet he never did anything. No consequences. This is a mess where a few simple adjustment are not going to fix the problems. The league has a template how to burn Bowles’ D and now he has a toxic locker room with a few cancers on defense. I would venture to say 2 of the cancers have gotten paid huge coin by Jason and have checked out already. A third is a free agent who apparently wants to get sacks to pad his resume and is angry Bowles has him trying to cover guys like Kyle Pitts. There are probably others, I cannot wait until someone speaks up after the dust has settled. Bowles has to go. He cannot stay and hire a DC, no DC worth his salt will play for a lame duck like Bowles if he did coach next year. Fire him!

  37. Bucsfan2023 Says:

Winfield let the receiver run right past him and didn’t even bother to try to cover him

  38. HeavyE Says:

No Accountability….& don’t hold them to it after a game or loss, do it while the game is being played…..Sorry A$$ coaches, GM and all of the six captains that we have…… this team is drug store cotton SOFT!!!!

  39. 813bucboi Says:

gotta fire bowles and his staff after the season…

    trade winfield and zyon…

let another team be conned by reddick and baker

    HIRE KLINT KUBIAK

    GO BUCS!!!!

  40. CottlevilleBuc Says:

The league is about money, it is a massive corporation. The owners are about a successful profitable business and are in it to make money. The Glazers have already began their coaching search (maybe GM?). This has been a pattern now for several years and no change appears in sight.

Unless change happens after the season playoffs or not, you have to be able to sell club seating and luxury boxes. The status quo will make that near impossible.

  41. Zoocomics Says:

I actually feel bad for Bowles, I know most of you don’t want to hear it, but its like they want to fire him. There wasn’t any in-game decision making he did to lose this game for us. His players did not execute.

That being said, to the broader point, players aren’t getting the message, and I don’t know what player acquisition on def going into next season whether it draft pick or free agency that will change the trends we’ve seen over the past few seasons. I can’t imagine one scary pass rusher will fix everything, and then if that pass rusher goes down, then what? We are back to the 4-6 game losing streaks hoping the other crap teams in the division continue to play bad as well. This team on both sides of the ball just doesn’t seem built to handle adversity. This is Licht’s roster, it’s mediocre, and frankly it’s not talented to enough. I’m good with blowing up the coaching staff, but Licht needs to step down as well. He is also to blame.

  42. Christos Says:

We can look at individual mistakes in certain plays but that is not the issue.
The problem is this Defense has been playing SOFT & PASSIVE coverage for the last 3 years. Sitting back often 10 yds off even when a blitz is called. Its muscke memory at this point. This coverage contest cathces only a handful of time in a game. Most of the receivers dont have a defender near them when they catch the ball. We ve been seing it for years. Its not only one play.

  43. Zoocomics Says:

@FortMyersDave…couple of the comments on here have talked about a lack of consequences for the players underperforming…I get it, I wish we could.

What I will tell you is that this team isn’t deep enough to be teaching its players a lesson by sitting them. I think Morrison was a healthy scratch last night, was it to teach him a lesson? Coincidentally, we lose Zyon, and I think having a 2nd Round talent in Morrison could have been of benefit to the team at some point in the game. There isn’t really guy on our def that is balling out. Dean’s ok, but in general, that’s really our problem.

Speaking of Zyon, god help me he is on my crap list… can’t I just say, I don’t think we have blocked a field goal all season, and now we’re going to be uber aggressive to where he got penalized, allowing the Falcons to get another shot at 6 vs 3…smh. We have idiots for players that just seem h@ll bent on getting Bowles fires. Mission accomplished.

  44. ScottNFL Says:

    Zoocomics,

I agree with you about Licht needing some of this blame and I am amazed at how local talk radio protects this guy. It is like they are all giddy that he returns their texts and jokes around with them. But, he has missed on every edge rusher and linebacker and most dbs in the last 5 or 6 drafts. Bowles is no genius, but he can coach good players….sadly, these guys on defense are awful. They are unathletic and slow, do not seem intelligent, and many of us are wondering if they really could care less about the team winning and losing. Licht needs to fix this defense or he will be the next name on the hot seat. Getting lucky with Tom Brady and Gronk coming here only gets you so much time.

  45. Will Says:

I’ll go a step further I believe the little mantra they’re using to draft players isn’t working. Thats the reason we see the return of JPP. This staff wouldn’t have drafted Sapp and he’s one of the reasons the defense was feared back in the day. You cant continue to draft guys that don’t have an attitude on your defense and especially in the trenches on either side of the ball. No one on defense is scared to mess up because there is no one on the field that’s going to get in their butt. That didn’t fly with our HOF guys on defense. I haven’t been to a game this year and the TV probably won’t show it so I’m asking anyone that has been to a game this year. When there’s been a major laspe on defense have you seen any player going off on the sidelines? We have a bunch of betas on this defense and the head coach is also one.

  46. ModHairKen Says:

Bowles. Zyon. Hall. Reddick. Diaby. SVD. Braswell. David. Winfield. Dean.

All should be gone. Trade them for dog crap if you can and cut who can’t be traded.

    No sacred cows.

  47. Mike Says:

Y’all sound like a bunch of idiots on here that’s not on awj that’s on vildor lol

  48. Coburn Says:

Mike vildor is supposed to have help overtop and if that player in the flat catches the ball he’s gotta come up and tackle. This is 100% on Winfield.

Winfield is just a symptom of Bowles. Most decent players seen to get worse under Bowles lately. Yeah he got paid and hasn’t seemed super motivated. That’s on coaching, especially when it’s more than one or two guys. None of the younger defensive guys have improved

  49. James Willie Says:

The most important job of a coach is to set the tone. Bowles lost this team a long time ago. Players need to know their job is ALWAYS on the line, no matter the contract. Motivation should come from coaches challenging young players to press the veterans. Happy warriors, but always warriors.

  50. unbelievable Says:

    Overpaid and overrated.

    Same with Zyon.

FIRE BOWLES. CLEAN HOUSE. THIS TEAM IS BROKEN.

  51. SteveK Says:

    Mike,

You’re mistaken. Winfield has been trash.

  52. Outrigger Says:

On this screen shot I see 3 Falcons wide ass open. The most important one is the one beyond the sticks but the other 2 easily could have got the first down if someone misses a tackle especially considering one of them was Bijan who was wide open in the flat.

  53. Hodad Says:

Modhair, all of them. Even the great Wirfs should be available for trade. Chuke looked good last week. The money you’d save on Wirfs, and the draft capital you gain could really help a quick turn around. Licht is to close to this roster. This organization needs a whole new direction.

  54. Couch Fan Says:

I wouldn’t trade anybody until we get a new coach and scheme. Not sure how you can be so adamant that its AWJs fault when its clear Bowles scheme wants everyone to play back like this. We all know how scared Bowles is of getting beat deep.

  55. MelvinJunior Says:

It is just more of the same that has been going on all season long for him. A day late & a dollar short. He has missed on about EVERY big play this year. Literally, he played a part in every single one of them by either guessing WRONG or just being miserably out of position from the jump. It’s really amazing. It’s indescribable from a guy I ‘thought’ was the next ED FREAKING REEEEEED. It’s unreal. Guess that one season was a total FLUKE then, during a contract year. And, this is after MISSING basically the ENTIRE SEASON last year! Looks as if he just got complacent collecting that FAT CHECK all last year, & it’s carried over. The perfect example for why this whole thing HAS TO BE blown-up. There MUST BE brand new leadership starting at the TOP. All of these guys are miserably overrated and ‘think’ they are GREAT (cough cough, Jason Lickt). They’ve ALL gotta go! The ONLY reason for why it ‘looked-like’ we were loaded with talent and so many people were ‘licking’ Lickt, was because a good portion of the roster has been here FOREVER, over a decade worth of drafts. And, they did a good job keeping some of these guys… But, why wouldn’t they want to stay here!? Pretty nice laid back living… Not a pressure cooker like the northeast cities, & not up north in the COLD depressed rustbelt. Just Sunny Beaches and Palm Trees. I thought he did very well with the 2024 Draft, BUT that’s about IT. He’s weak, dumb, cocky, and lazy. And, NOTHING is as insufferable as someone who is both dumb AND cocky. I don’t mention Todd, because that is now FINALLY, obvious to everyone.

  56. Capeaceiskaput Says:

I believe in trends. If you look at Bowles as a head coach with the Jets, every year the defense got progressively worse. This trend is happening again in Tampa. You can’t really say he is a bad DC, because things start out well, but after awhile the message somehow gets lost. If Bowels was just the Head Coach, I would say keep him and fire the DC, but this situation is not that, so basically, he is toast. Bright side, because of the talent on the offensive side, the job should be attractive for the next HC, so depending on who is available and who gets anointed as the next great thing, we should be able to land a decent coach.

  57. Mike Says:

Todd Bowles says Kindle Vildor needed to drift more towards the sideline on that 4th and 14. That’s his job.

  58. MegaFailure Says:

overpaid business decision making sack a crap

  59. Bucamania Says:

AWJ hasn’t played like AWJ in two years

  60. Jeff Says:

Bowles scheme is pure garbage. The game has passed him by.

  61. JustVisiting Says:

I just don’t know how you let anyone make 4th and 14 with the game on the line. Fourth and four, yeah, but 14?!?

  62. Jeff Says:

Winfield took the money and ran! Dude checked out after he signed his big contract.

  63. Guy In the Stands Says:

The guy has regressed so far his a shell of the pro-bowl safety he was.
    Got paid and got lazy.

  64. California Buc Says:

This is the most ignorant, racist threat I have ever read. I can see 33, yes 33 players that should be considered for a trade or be cut after the season. The first name on the list is Baker Mayfield. I am a Mayfield supporter. However, he has been in the league for too long to hold the ball, take sacks, and run without sliding.
This team has an array of things wrong. Most of them begin with the GM and you seem to never call for his head. For instance, Cancey is a bust, Hall, that number 9 that is gone. The corner out of N. D. missed camp for guaranteed money he didn’t deserve. Those are contractual mistakes. How about passing on Reddick and paying for Hendrickson.
The running back situation is a joke. Tucker and Williams or any 2 of the 4 would be a great room. Look at the WR room. We could have saved the money on Godwin and picked up a 3rd round pick, but the management decided to go with 2 aging WR while occupying 2 young stars.
Also, look at how many high picks and boat loads of money went to the offense since Brady.
This was a horri Tampa has won two SB. Both were because of the defense. This defense needs to be deconstructed, then rebuilt using collateral on the line. By the way, this GM didn’t add a pass rusher or anyone before the trade deadline.
Bowles wears multiple hats and is one of the lowest paid coaches in the league. Just better be careful what you wish for, I remember 0-26. I was at most of those games.

  65. Jack Sparrow Says:

This team is garbage !!!! not a single player will be a starter in a different NFL team. Embarrassing !

  66. Mike C Says:

He didn’t even seem like he cared about losing the Rams game in the playoffs, over paid BUM!!!!!

  67. Mike C Says:

California Buc, we better no fire Todd because we will go 0 and 26??? GTFOH Super Bowl is the Goal, not avoiding 0 and 26….. WTF?

  68. Leroy Miles Says:

Lay off Winfield! Bowles mentioned this morning that the cornerback Vildor was supposed to fall back to the first down! They practiced it all week and he did in practice, didn’t do it in the game! So again, before you call someone out Joe, you have to get it right first! Thanks

  69. Saskbucs Says:

California Buc… ignorant and racist!? What the hell are you smoking this morning?

I agree that the players and Licht shoulder some blame here, hasn’t been good enough but Bowles is terrible. You only need to look at Cousins stats the last 3 games vs Todd to understand why he needs to be shown the door asap.

Players don’t pull this kinda poor execution multiple games in a row without the coaching being a major problem. Todd’s great locker room culture went pillow soft over the last 18 months.

  70. Saskbucs Says:

Sure looks like Vildor screwed up, but there is 0 reason for Winfield to be where he is in that picture. It’s as if multiple guys back there were unsure of the distance to gain.

How hard is it to man up 4 guys, try to get hands on a guy at the line, while 3 safeties roam the 15-20 zone hunting the ball?

The love of soft zone and a 4 man rush has ultimately done Bowles in. Can point to many other culprits for this disaster but it’s Bowles scheme that’s been a team killer and it’s not new info unfortunately.

  71. Fanofdabucs Says:

Mike, you call people dumb and then say something that is conpletely wrong. That was 100% on AWjr.

  72. StormyInFl Says:

Maybe they can get something for AWJ in a trade.

  73. Brent Says:

That was I’m the corner not dropping to the sticks

  74. Rod Munch Says:

How are you so clear it’s Winfield and not the corner. This literally looks like every single Todd Bowles zone play. Winfield is always way back by design. Without seeing the video – only the photo – and based off seeing this trash zone hundreds of times, I’d think the corner didn’t drop to the correct depth.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

I commented without seeing other posts here – they even say that Bowles said Winfield wasn’t at fault on the play, it was the scrub 6th string corner Vildor who didn’t drop to the sticks as the play was designed.

I pointed out this past offseason how Lions fans celebrated him leaving the team as he single handedly cost them a game and was pretty much universally hated by the fans.

IF Bowles did clear that up and say that – I hope the Joe’s run a new full story correcting this instead of letting the hate fester.

  76. Old Sombrero Says:

This (at least this play) shows his players aren’t executing. It’s shameful. I said it before, his teammates need to be the one to fix this. He’s clearly the best player at this position when he’s playing up to his capabilities. A replacement player on the roster on his best day isn’t as good as Winfield on his best day which is why I say this comes down to player to player accountability. Did Michael Jordan accept this crap? Nope. Derrick Brooks? Nope. All 11 men are needed. I’d like to know if the captains have gone to Bowles to say ‘this is BS what are we going to do to fix it…he either needs to be benched and we’ll rally around his replacement or we sit him down and tell him this is unacceptable and give him a chance to correct course while telling him this crap ends now and if it doesn’t, you will watch from the sidelines’. If he’s benched you tell the team why and it sends a message to everyone what is expected.

  77. Rod Munch Says:

Old Sombrero – check out the comments above, not just mine but others above about Bowles commenting on the play – pretty clear Winfield was doing his job, the corner was supposed to drop to the sticks and didn’t.

  78. Tired Says:

Sorry, it no. Sure Windfield was too far off, but Vildor waving as the receiver ran by him is the problem to me. 4th and long calls for “no one gets behind me” defense, and he failed.

  79. Rod Munch Says:

Tired – But Winfield wasn’t too far off. This is what Bowles stupid super soft zone always looks like. He has Winfield literally 30 yards deep at the snap of the ball as the last man back who only comes up of everyone else fails. It’s literally by design. It’s a stupid design – and that’s why I hate Bowles stupid zone – but within that stupid scheme Winfield is literally where he’s supposed to be. I’ve seen this same stupid zone hundreds of times on tape – this is what it always looks like regardless of down when it comes to AWJ if he’s asked to play that last man back role, which he’s doing here. It’s why over and over again I’ve talked about how dumb the scheme is – they literally have guys stand around and wait for something to happen. It’s a terrible scheme.

  80. Stpetematt Says:

The moment the ball crosses the line of scrimmage EVERYONE should be closing on the ball. And to run a proper zone defense positioning is key. If Vildor didn’t fall back into his zone there’s a wide open area of the field!

  81. Gipper Says:

Winfield has trailed the field all season as teams have wracked up long runs against Bucs. Most recent was rookie Saints QB who waltzed into the end zone twice. Winfield is tremendously overrated. The only skills that the entire defense has are these: when one of them makes an occasional tackle there is a choreographed hand slapping and dance routine.

  82. Itzok Says:

This guy hasn’t made a play in two years and was a big reason they lost to the patriots

  83. Obvious One Says:

    The PROBLEM IS the contractS…..

They aren’t paid via contractual provisions to do a little thing called “PERFORM”!!

There IS NO consequences for poor play and under performance on or in a “REASONABLE” description thereof…. It’s NOT IN THE CONTRACT!

Now, if… IF the contracts were let’s say MUCH MORE leaning towards a “PERFORMANCE BASED PAY”…. THEN! Then, you’d have players that BALLED OUT because if they Don’t…. They DON’T MAKE THE BIG BUCKS! They will make NO MORE than the “base wage”. Certainly NOT Millions of dollars without a “GUARANTEE OF PERFORMANCE”

There are those that will argue that “well they won’t play” without that Guaranteed, FOR FREE MONEY! Well, I beg to DIFFER! I HAVEN’T MENTIONED WHAT WAS ON THE LINE AS TO WHAT THAT PAY PER PLAY “MASSIVE BONUSES” MIGHT BE! NOW DID I!

In fact, the contracts I suggest WOULD PAY THEM WELL AND BEYOND WHAT IS CURRENTLY POSSIBLE ACROSS THE BOARD! The “base pay” would of course be different from player to player, but NO MATTER. It would be Very Little guaranteed money. Only HUGE PAYOUTS FOR ACTUAL PERFORMANCE….

And THAT’S HOW the contracts SHOULD BE executed per player. An OPPORTUNITY LIKE NEVER BEFORE FOR ALL PLAYERS RATHER THAN A FEW “CHOSEN FEW” whom it seems ALWAYS PLAYS DOWN TO THEIR CONTRACTS ONCE THEY GET PAID!

In fact the ONLY EXCEPTION I can think of that played AT OR ABOVE their or “his” contract was “Tom Brady”…. I can’t think of anybody else..

  84. Obvious One Says:

O and thank you Joe for finally pointing out who the Main Culprit is. It seems CLEAR doesn’t it?…. McCollom sees all but too happy to join in, in LOSERVILLE, with His GUARANTEED MONEY already deposited in the bank. What’s there to play for after you get paid anyway? ….. Just ask ANY hourly employee..

  85. firethecannons Says:

Fire Bowles, trade the players that are not living up to their expensive contracts. Stop wasting money on players like JPP–that was incredible waste. We going to need money to buy in FA as we have many needs.

  86. eoschwartz Says:

Troy Polomolu was the kind of safety that deserved top dog paychecks. He was always hustling, filling in gaps and opponknee where he was. An intimidating presence.

Winfield has never been in the same conversation as him yet for some bone headed reason Licht signed him to a record contract. That’s Licht’s weakness, he overpays to keep players that are comfortable in the system. He doesn’t understand how to build a roster that has any depth and he keeps spending high draft picks on positions where you need aggression and strong large body guys specifically the defensive line.

The mistakes he has made with Diaby, JTS, Hall and Braswell have made this defensive line garbage. These are all high draft picks that could never start for the NFC big boys like Philly, Detroit, SF or LA.

He has missed very badly on these guys and Bowles continues to run his outdated defense and expects 250-285 lb players to be able to cover athletically gifted TE and RB in 3rd down passing situations.

Licht is the co-conspirator to Bowles in drafting players that aren’t big enough or tough enough to build a defense that can intimidate opponents.

It has boiled to the point where the pro-personnel department, coaching departments and scouting have all be below mediocre.

The entire organization has put out a stale product that has been slowly decaying and has finally rotted into a stinking carcass.

The time has come on Black Monday to throw the garbage out and begin with a fresh approach with some youthful and innovative ideas that can put a Buccaneer team on the field that the area can be proud of.

This is the darkest period for the Bucs since the Lovie/Mike Smith eras.

  87. firethecannons Says:

Thanks Rod Munch for explaining, sounds like we need to face facts, fire Bowles and start the build up to a dominant defense with a new coach. In another direction I hope the Bucs consider Todd Monken for head coach.

  88. Ben Says:

Trade him. He hasnt been the same player. Either that, or bench him to send a message. We don’t need him to win. Guy was burned all night

  89. Canabuc Says:

I thought Winfield played terribly all game. I saw him come up short on a couple of tackles that he should have made. And he seemed out of position covering Kyle pits on at least one play.

He actually is one of my biggest disappointments this year. Last year he got an excuse because of injuries all season. But he’s been healthy this year and his play has really dropped off. Especially when you compare second year player Tiykee Smith….

Overall this year on defense my big disappointment people are Reddick as he was paid good money to come here as a free agent and has been nothing. Braswell I didn’t expect much but God even less. Winfield is playing like a mediocre safety not somebody who should be making $20 million dollars a year. Has been playing scared and weak all season as well.

The rest of the players on the defense where there has been a lack it at least has not been from effort. You know Dennis might be a bit of a liability and coverage but he was very good against the run and he was a good blitzer. And it was pretty clear when he’s off the field the defenses seem to pick up a bit more yardage.. David unfortunately has lost a critical step and can only do so much with instincts and experience.
There is going to be a lot to rebuild on this defense. I think the better part of the draft and free agency will have to focus on the defense and the interior offensive line. We will also need to replace tight end cuz Otton has been a liability at tight end this year as well. We will also likely lose weight to free agency which is too bad because I thought early on today you could see how he was a good compliment to Bucky and then we just went away from him.

  90. Buc king Says:

Winfield not the issues of your falling for Joe’s narrative you don’t have a high football iq

  91. dumboldguy Says:

Bowles is the one out of position. This picture is his resume. We have 6 guys in coverage. Two are nicely bracketing the deep in route at the sticks. The other four are literally covering nobody. None of the other 4 are within 5 yards of anybody. This is the Bowles defense. Nobody knows where they need to be or who to cover.

We have 4 guys guarding grass while the Falcons have 3 players wide open. Two are short of the first down but there’s not a lot of support if they catch it and get momentum which they will because again, nobody within 5-10 yards.

  92. Falconrap Says:

This is still on Bowles and his coaching staff. One…blitz so that Cousins doesn’t have time to hit that play. Two…his position coaches seem to make players worse, not better. Three…if you are going to drop 7 into coverage, play man-zone (one or both safeties play zone while everyone else plays man) instead of playing this soft zone crap with big gaping holes everywhere. He coaches like he’s scared to lose, and he loses because of it.

    Fire him and move on.

  93. Nick Says:

I actually disagree. The corner bit in on the RB. His job was to get to the sticks and cover the sticks and beyond not worry about the RB going to the flat. You play the sticks then rally to the ball if it’s a dump off. These dumb 🫏’s decide to play the flat and let the receiver run right past the 1st down marker for an easy completion.

  94. teacherman Says:

    Izien is better than Winfield.

Izien and Tykee should start next year.

    Cut Winfield.

  95. ukester Says:

the thing i hate is seeing him before the coin toss surrounded by players trying to hype them all up-he was great then came the money now he sucks

  96. ChiBuc Says:

And who resigned AWJ, Bowles, n Zyon to big extensions? Hmmm, Glazers only need to fire 1 main to sort this mess out

  97. ChiBuc Says:

Let’s see 2 promising young lions lost their hearts following Bowles down his yellow brick road. Broke D. White, now AWJ, and Zyon is on his way

  98. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Vildor has to sink more on the 4th and 14 to the sticks. If they throw to Bijan, he has to run 17yds to get the first with everyone running to him. You have to force the check down and hope to rally for the tackle. Can’t give up the deep pass to the sideline for the 1st in that situation. SITUATIONAL football.

  99. CapeBuc Says:

All I want for Christmas is to see how this Defense plays without Winfield. I just wanna see. Don’t care about this season, even if we win the division we’re not getting past the other NFC teams. So let’s see where this rot on Defense has come from. If it’s from a so-called “leader” like Win then let’s see. He got his ring, he got his cash and he has nothing to play for IMO. Might be time to cut losses and see some hunger at the back to stop some of these explosives and clutch conversions.
