“I Thought The Focus Was There”

December 7th, 2025

Bucs GM Jason Licht and Baker Mayfield comment on the leadup to today’s loss.

How did the Bucs lose today to a sadsack slimy Saints football team?

Oh, Bucs fans saw it play out on the field, but what about the preparation leading up to the game?

Baker Mayfield said after today’s nutkick 24-20 loss that the Bucs had a solid week of preparation, which included practicing with a wet football.

“I thought the focus was there,” Mayfield said.

Interestingly, Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht said before the game that he could feel a playoff-like vibe from his team.

Team radio network co-host Gene Deckerhoff mentioned to Licht that the Bucs are in a fight for the playoffs and it’s that crunch-time of the sason.

“You can definitely feel it in our preparations,” Licht replied.

Joe almost feels bad hearing two Bucs leaders say the team had a good mindset in the week leading up to today’s mess. An off week might make the result feel a tiny bit understandable.

We win by Losing! If this doesn’t get Bowles and his staff fired what will? The Bucs had no chance to win a Playoff Game so this is for the best. It will end mediocrity. Bowles and his staff are gone

  2. MerryPlankster777 Says:

Maybe can feel it in Practice, but when you actually watch the games you feel a strong loss of interest.

  3. SBucs Says:

Either these two numbskulls are lying or they don’t have a feel for the team. The Bucs are bad, the coaching is worse.

  4. Tye Says:

Jason Licht is living off of the Brady years. SHould have been fired long time ago.

    Dude is a crappy GM.

  6. johnnythemoon Says:

Baker does not need to be extended let him play out next year and Licht giving Todd a not needed extension is a fireable offense

  10. Miller5252 Says:

Another home game loss and it was one of the worst, if not the worst team in the NFL. If you were prepared you would have blowed them off like the Jags did today. That coach seems to have his team prepared for the playoffs. Our coach looks to be ready for retirement. Bye bye Bowles. 2 years late! Should have fired him last year and kept Coen

  11. Louie Says:

They may not win another game this season

  12. StormyInFl Says:

Bowles has got to go. And if Jason doesn’t want to do it, he can go, too.

  21. Chad Says:

If you don’t extend baker, you are screwing yourself. No notable qbs are gonna fall to the Bucs in the mid to late first round. When the o-line is healthy and we aren’t missing 6 starting offensive players then we can see what the Bucs are on offense. Thing is I know what the Bucs are on defense, they show it every week, and let a team that averages 12 points a game hand 24 on our head while making a rookie qb look like Lamar Jackson

A game the bucs needed to win this wasn’t some early in the season game this was a game they had to have and they lost !!! the team didn’t look prepared and Mayfield looked awful but he hasn’t looked good for weeks. But hey Licht can stay as long as he wants thanks to Brady but the team he and Bowles have constructed isn’t a good team … the saints played in the same conditions so I really don’t want to hear about the weather … the rookie QB made plays and ours didn’t

  24. Wade Says:

Fire everyone at this point. What an awful loss. Nice tackling too

Did that happen on the final drive, when Baker had the ball in his hands with a chance to win the game?

    No, it didn’t.

  39. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Were better off with the Bucs losing & getting Blowles & his staff fired. Licht needs to go to. Also get rid of Rod Munch. He’s the biggest loser/

  40. SBucs Says:

  42. Obvious Says:

I rooted hard to win and am disappointed we lost, but it’s possible that we look back at today as the game the glazers needed to make the correct decision.

Unless something out of the blue happens, we’ll lose to the panthers at least once and they (glazers) won’t game a home playoff game which hits the pocket books. And you don’t f with an owners pocketbook

This is a very attractive job. Just need to get the right offensive guy in here.

Baker has until the end of the year to earn a new deal. If he beats the Panthers twice, the Bucs are still in.

    We Suck Again!

Our new OC sucks. Not sure why we have to be hiring position coaches and giving the label and job of the OC. Wasn’t qualified and it shows.

Any chance we can stop giving up major yards on kickoffs? I watch a lot of football and rarely do I see a huge run back unless it’s against the Bucs.

Bowles always has the same Joe Biden look on his face. Not sure where he’s at, what just happened and where to go. All of his interviews are repeats from the past 5 weeks.

Lost to a 2-10 Team that plays in a dome, they used a rookie QB, back up RB and a rookie HC. About as bad of a loss as you can take.

  51. HC Grover Says:

With no doubt….The Saints were the better taem on the field. Better coached and better players. The Bucs SUCK

  52. Chad Says:

Rod… so baker plays like a beast and defense sells like they’ve done the last 5 weeks, does baker get a new deal or nah

  53. eoschwartz Says:

Licht is just gaslighting with that quote. Practice doesn’t help the Bucs because the players are making the same mistakes now at game 13.

Can’t make tackles on swing passes, players aren’t wrapping up and finishing tackles

Mayfield inaccurate and not uncomfortable in the pocket

Drops every game, o awareness of where sticks are

    False starts on home field

    Missing tackles on Kickoff returns

Failing to tackle quarterbacks when they collapse pocket allow escape to edge

Leaving the middle of the field wide open on 3rd and 10’s

Players not held accountable for poor play

GM and coaches can’t develop a pass rush

    Poor effort

  54. Stuck with Green Says:

Good mindsets but coaching is bad and play-calling choices are bad. We let the wrong coach go.

  55. Frank Pillow Says:

Jason cried, pouted and whined (or at least did so through innuendo and media drops) when Liam back-door’d his way to Jax…an objective GM would’ve assessed that Liam was more valuable to the organization long term- based on performance alone- and courteously, but calculatingly made the right decision and dismissed Todd after another abysmal D showing last season. Too much shelf congratulation and hubris had left us sitting in a heaping mess.

  56. Chuckys Bucs Says:

    How do we lose?

Dropped touchdown and third down balls by EE. Pass interference on third down by EE. Dropped 4th down ball by Godwin. Two runs on 4th down stuffed. Otton running short of the sticks on 4th down. Johnson stopping his route resulting in an int. Over 100 yards given up on passes up the middle. Now getting off the field on 3rd down.

    Mystery solved

  57. Co-Z Coolman Says:

Baker played like ass today and has for the last month. Guy can’t throw ten yards downfield with any accuracy. This is going to get ugly, I think we could lose out. Might be for the best, tbh

  58. PewterStiffArm Says:

Yah know, my wife and I are going to retire in a few years. We are thinking about Tennessee, you know the home of the Titans. A new stadium coming to Nashville and a brand new attitude. I have been watching the Buc’s for 43 years and I am tired of high expectations and never relishing in success with this coach. The Tennessee Titans, it has a good ring to it. The Atlanta Falcons are next, hopefully they smack us around, priceless 🤣

    ——–

Again, the defense gave up 260 yards today, got a TO, gave Baker the ball back with 2 minutes left and a chance to win the game, the defense did it’s job today, the offense did not.

But yes, if Baker balls out, snaps out of this funk, looks like he did last year then he’ll certainly get a new deal. I’m hoping he does it, because if he does, the Bucs will win. The team was literally designed to win on offense, not to score 20 points vs a bad team.

  72. SDsleeper Says:

The whole coaching staff needs to go asap. I think Licht has been a great GM in regards to gathering talent and hitting picks (I know – minus DE, Aguyao) and I see an immense amount of individual talent on this team. The scheme and coaching is down right malpractice. Licht blew it by not realizing that the answer was already evident and firing Bowles for Cohen was the right call but at this point that’s just crying over spilt milk. The staff needs to go and I don’t know what the answer is for new HC target but clearly what we have is not the answer. With a Ben Johnson type hire we are in NFC championship next year atleast with the talent this team has.

  73. Rick Says:

The defense did NOT do its job today – are we watching the same game? The offense just happens to equally suck now. Bowles has to go – defensive minded coach w the worst defense in the league. We may not win another game this season……

  74. BucsBeast Says:

When the team doesn’t believe in their coaching staff, the usually look for better options. I can see most if not all our FAs moving on. Baker might too.
This entire staff has fumbled the team. When the Bucs get EMBARRASSED Thursday night…. Might as well sign the divorce papers. Bowles has lost his team, credibility, and accountability.

  75. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Painful game to watch. Coaching failure on both D and O. Todd has been able to hang on to his job because he had competent OCs in Cohen and Canales — coaches who could overcome his defensive weaknesses. A previous poster said that Baker looked lost, and I couldn’t agree more.

The tension on the sideline between Baker, Grizzard and the QB coach appeared obvious.

The Glazers really need to clean house. Todd should retire to the soft-coverage paradise.

  76. Mhystc Says:

Jason clueless scared to make trades
Licht. Give me Klint Kubiak from seahawksor Matt Lafeur from the rams

  77. Earresponsible Says:

Never thought Bowles was any better than slightly below average. When he makes a dumb call like today going for a first down instead of letting Chase take a shot at a field goal with seconds left before halftime and it predictably turns out to be a disaster?

  78. ModHairKen Says:

Either Baker and Licht are telling the press what they wanted the team to hear or they are clueless. And they are not clueless. When you have to motivate players by speaking platitudes to the media, there is a huge opportunity problem.

This team has some serious holes. Some seriously immature players. Some quitters. Some who lack the talent for the NFL.

Bowles has to go. It’s time for a change.

  79. VOT Says:

A game like this shows most of the team has tuned out the coaches- I would love to be a fly on the wall watching the eye rolling from the players during install meetings

You know all the players are like “here we go again with this stupid crap that doesn’t work” – the players do not believe in any of the 3 sides of the ball – ST is an absolute joke, the O is getting worse and worse and worse and the D has been putrid for 3 years now

They have all mentally checked out subconsciously- that is what insanity does to you – when your leaders just keep doing the same things that don’t work, the followers lose faith – that is what we all see on the field

  80. HC Grover Says:

Munch not making sense.nHey….they suck. Saints are a better team…They won in Tampa in the rain. pretty simple. Better coach better players.

  81. Bucs4Ever Says:

    Another thing.

Grizz is weird. I”m sure a really smart guy,but his press conferences are off. At first I thought he just was nervous. But he doesn’t smile, keeps his head down, no real connection with people.

He is not connecting to the players.
Both Dave Canales and Liam Coen (el serpiente) had charisma and connection. Grizz does not. May be part of the problem. Not a good communicator. More of a robot.

Added to that you have a crappy offensive coordinator and a pure garbage defensive scheme……

If Licht don’t fire Bowles, then Bucs brass needs to fire Licht!!!

  84. Winny Testaverde Says:

People will whine about not acting at the trade deadline, but consider that Licht knew that anything he could do wouldnt be enough to offset the coaching of Bowles.

Offensive line was like a sieve not even bothering to block a four man rush, Baker now has a sprained ac joint in his throwing shoulder (not an excuse – just an observation). receivers dropping passes, etc and yet it’s all Bakers fault? I hope he leaves and get a contract with an organization that has skill position players not on IR

  102. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Davenport

    Agree to disagree.

There is little to no talent on defense, and the HC and EVERY employee is his responsibility. If the employee isn’t capable, you have to do something.

  103. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Rod Munch: You keep repeating the same mantra. Does Baker have to win every game in the final minutes? We’ve certainly seen him do it enough to know he’s a good QB, but he’s not going to be able to pull it off every week.

Bowles’ defense puts pressure on the offense to win too often. The soft-coverage thing; It’s so tiring to watch.

  104. Old Sombrero Says:

The final play call was well played by the defender. Otten’s route was not the best. Baker had one place to put the ball but it was short at the catch point because Otton’s route was defended well. The bigger missed play was the 2nd missed 4th down try late in 2nd quarter. That was a big play to keep a storing drive alive. Two missed 4th and 1 in scoring territory in the first half is just like the two fourth and goal a few weeks ago. Those failures destroy the team’s momentum.

  105. JoeyJoeStein Says:

“Thought the focus”……….Lol. We are constantly told the professional-multi-millionaire’s, are always focused and that they are “professionals,” and that nothing rattles the “professionals. In contrast, they play hard until they feel that the game is no longer in their favor, then hop in their Lamborghini’s, hit strip clubs, then their $$$$ domiciles, then laugh alllllllllllllll the way to the bank.

I thought he was the MVP. I thought everyone wants Baker with the ball in his hands with a chance to win the game. This was the Saints, a terrible team, playing at home. This is a game every QB, even ones not an MVP level, are expected to win.

Also, 20 points a game isn’t going to win many games in 2025.

Baker has to step up if this team is to have a chance.

Mayfield overthrew a wide open Ekbuka for a tying td , then his pass to Otton didn’t even give Otton a chance to make a play for a td.
Then the 4 and out at the end- against a team giving up 25 points/game.
Yeah, the Oline is banged up, but Mayfield sucked today.

The throw to Ekbuka was possibly catchable if he hadn’t stopped and tried to jump to catch it.The O line was a disgrace. Baker was getting banged up again. He now has an AC joint sprain is his throwing shoulder from the beating he is taking. You want one player to make up for all the other bad players?

  110. stucbuc Says:

Jason Licht you failed this team this season. You get a F bud. Poor to ok drafting. failed in FA, failed at the trade deadline to do anything and from what I’m reading, looks like you may be disconnected from reality. The fact that you didint even entertain Micah Parsons sort of sent a message early.

I like you, but you got some work to do, I think you got comfortable and content like the rest of the team this season. Sad.

  111. Ex-Browns02 Says:

    Rod:

Is Baker, in your opinion, “regressing”?

I predicted that the Bucs would go 6-0 to end the season. That was predicated on our returning players getting playing time to get back into their grove.

The team that we watched today isn’t going anywhere in the playoffs. It’s time for a coaching change.

  112. BakerFan Says:

Fire Baker, that way he can go to a team that has at least half the heart he has. This team is filled with bums almost as many bums that are on this interweb site.

For real fire Licht, Bowles, Grizz, Special Teams Coach. I am outta here.

I agree . These Baker bashers deserve a couple of years of Teddy.

  114. Boltsfan17 Says:

Licht is a complete clown. Statements like that just confirm what most honest fans already knew.

  115. Mach Says:

Is he in La La land? This is the problem, his arrogance to not admit what we all sse

  116. Debbie Says:

Wow. We just lost to the worst of our division teams. Oh wait, one of the worst in the NFL. Special teams lead the way. So Defense did not want to be outdone. This looks like someone, I do not know who, threw the game. But looks can be decieving. Nope, too many f-ups. Is this a collective decision to give up? I am embarrassed for the team. Starts with poor coaching. Cannot say which coach because the whole team played poorly. I really wanted to win the division again. Break another record. Do we deserve it? Yes. I have been a fan from the beginning. A couple decades before the majority of the players were born. Players come and go. Coaches come and go. Being a Division winner means something to certain fans, who recognize that it is not given to you. The year we won our second Superbowl, we did not win our division title. But we won the Superbowl. Winners do not give up in the middle of a play. Go train in the practice squad. Let someone who won’t give up take your place. Learn your plays. Study film of your opponents. Practice until muscle memory takes over.

  117. Hodad Says:

Jason, you still keeping receipts? Dumbass.

  118. Ben Says:

@Tye Monken and Kubiak would be worse than Bowles. If you make a change you go get a stud not coaches that bounce around the league looking for jobs. Some fans are just delusional. Vrabel should have been the guy last year but doubt he chooses TB over NE. There really isnt anyone on the market worth going for at this time.

  119. Obvious One Says:

    @Debbie

Hey, well said Deb. The thing is they’re well aware of that. And you know what? They’re “choosing” Not To do all that you mentioned. But hey, nice put…

You’d Think they’d PLAY HARD to be paid handsomely, you know, in the Millions of Dollars and be falling over themselves to make the plays and Impress As Much as Humanly Possible to have an AWESOME JOB that they could hit the Lottery “EVERY YEAR”! O…. wait a minute….

So where is the reason to pay them MILLIONS OF DOLLARS???

It’s ALL about the Contracts. If they were payed via “Performance Based”, We’d be SUPER BOWL CONTENDERS EVERY YEAR!

  120. Bucamania Says:

Need to find someone who can draft defensive line talent.

  121. Bud Says:

Baker still has 2 more seasons after this one, Chad. There is no reason to be in a hurry.

  122. Bud Says:

I don’t understand all of this Baker extension talk. He literally just signed one and this is literally the first year of it. Out of 3. There is still plenty of time to make a decision on Baker. As of right now this very minute, you would have to say NO if it is anything over $50 million per season. And that number might continue going down. You have to consider his size, his age, and his injury history. He is constantly banged up do to his size and style of play. Players (especially QB’s) typically do not get healthier with age in this league. Only speaking truth here to these weird insecure Baker suck ups who never place any of the blame onto Baker no matter what. And they always have an excuse and get defensive.

  123. Mach Says:

The comment from Baker and Licht bith shows they are put of touch with the team vibe. How can you say that your teams mindset is great when they came out flat. Bottom line – the team isnt responding to the captains and coaching, if anything there was lack of preparation.
