“Coaching Malpractice”

December 13th, 2025

Unfair critique?

A former Steelers and Florida State cornerback watched Thursday night’s choke job by the Bucs defense and nearly lost his mind.

Bryant McFadden believes it was both Bucs coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard who set the Bucs up for a heart-ripping, embarrassing loss.

McFadden cited Grizzard for having Baker Mayfield throw in the fourth quarter when instead, McFadden believed the Bucs should have gone ground-and-pound.

“Coaching malpractice, McFadden said. “Coaching malpractice. … The Buccaneers received the ball at the 40-yard line. You’re two first downs away from potentially being in field goal range to go up 11 points.

“But what did they do? They threw the football. Josh Grizzard, who is the OC, that’s a moment where you allow the running game to close the game for you. Worst case scenario, you get into field goal range and you go up two possessions.

“But because you are so aggressive with a lead in the fourth quarter, you put the ball in Baker Mayfield’s hand. He tried to make something happen [and] threw an interception.”

McFadden makes a good point. Rachaad White only had one carry but when he did have that one run he just dragged people with him. Bucky Irving was having an OK night, not great.

Still, Joe thinks this is nitpicking a bit. It wasn’t the offense that blew the game, it was Bowles’ defense that gagged away a two-score lead.

If you can’t hold a two-score lead in the fourth quarter against a rotten team in your own crib, you’ve got major problems.

And the Bucs have major problems.

  2. ModHairKen Says:

He’s right. The pick came when there was no reason to throw. Baker was off target all night.

Absolutely the wrong call in the wrong (clock) moment and field position. Inviting trouble, which is exactly what happened. We’ve definitely lost two in a row on faulty scheme.

  4. Show Me the TDs Says:

I like being aggressive. Monday morning quaterbacking.

  5. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Complementary football Joe. While the D is no game winning D, we were up 14 WITH the ball WITHOUT BMorrison AND Zyon so essentially 3rd and 4th corner on a short week. Take the ball and ground it, use your best disguised run plays and take 4 downs to make 10 yds twice and Chase seals the win.
Complementary football. Coaching and Bake with his lack of accuracy need to take accountability. Bake did during the presser, kudos to him.

  6. Jugheadfla2 Says:

Has Bowels been shown the door yet? Everything else is just not worth talking about.

How in the heck did Licht finagle the Glazers into giving this loser an extension?

  7. Tye Says:

We could have been RID of the stench of Bowels losing and replaced him with a winner in Liam Coen!…
MAN, the Bucs can really royally miss amazing opportunities for losers….

  8. OrlandoBucFan Says:

McFadden is right. That is the exact situation where you lean on your running game. Even though Baker had his moments throwing the ball, he was being hounded all night by Atlanta’s pass rush. It was only a matter of time until Baker made a critical mistake, which he did. Still, our defense sucks and that is where I place the blame.

  9. MelvinJunior Says:

I think outside of Mike Evans (and maybe the rest of the WR’s), everyone had a hand in this one. It was an all-around team effort. They blew-it. But, refusing to play RWhite was something that really bothered me… And, I definitely took notice. It was just SO puzzling. It made no sense. Especially, after that ONE-PLAY he made. What a joke. Also, I noticed that it was one of the very few times ALL SEASON LONG (after I’d already given up literally SCREAMING-IT for the first MONTH+ of the season), that Grizzard had used BOTH, RWhite AND Bucky (2-back sets) together, on the field at the SAME TIME. And, just LOOK at what happened when he did. I was like… YES, FINALLY. It ‘looks-like’ they might have something here, & have finally figured-it out!!!! But, then HE doesn’t touch the ball AGAIN!?:/ Well, that sure didn’t last. It’s PATHETIC. Just very VERY dumb.

  10. firethecannons Says:

Ughhh it is so frustrating, there has got to be something wrong if Glazers tolerate this. Bowles and regime must get fired. Just no excuse for this coaching malpractice. It was critical important as well. What are they waiting for? I live in another state. Joe get the gang together and protest outside OBP.

  11. FrontFour Says:

I was yelling Run The Damn Ball in the 4th Qtr and Grizz is throwing the ball and stopping the clock. Should have gone to Harvard. Guess we wanted to hire an OC that wouldn’t become a HC after one season.

All the talent on this team is on offense. And we screw the pooch.

Then we have our Punk All Pro $20m safety AWJ 10 yards out of position on 4th and 14 to give up the game.

  12. Ryan Says:

The offense very much lost the game for us. Too little imagination and understanding of situational football. Grizzard is like Leftwich with his predictability. How about the “hot hand” running back? Tucker or White breaks a 10+ yard run and the next play there’s a different rb. How many 1st and 2nd down run up the middle into the backups getting blown up? How many pass plays where wr aren’t coached to go past the sticks and come back vs turn around 3 yards before the line and stopped short. This dude has to go. He has been bad all season.

Bowles has shown that his defense will work when getting pressure from 4. Without that then there will always be a hole and the required need for others to hold more ground due to blitzing one or more.

  13. Ben Says:

This guy didnt watch the game. When the Bucs ran the ball on first down on the same drive he was talking about, it went for nothing. On 2nd down Baker had Egbuka, Bake needed to make that play. And the 3rd down sack was inexcuseable. Once again, it’s players not executing.

Bowles defense is broken. But even on 3rd and 28, to 4th and 14, no way that should have been converted. Winfield and Vildor completely busted. Vildor hesistated due to the flat, and winfield was like 5 steps behind with no reciever in front or behind. Like what is he doing? That play was alll on the players, not the coaching.

The week before, Otton doesn’t get to the sticks, he should have. Look at the 4th and 14 that the falcons converted, guy was well past the sticks. Like cmon man. Just basic sh$t here.

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

There has been coaching malpractice going on for years. Remember when Devin White said he was bored playing football? Remember when Devin White PROVED ON THE FIELD HE WAS BORED PLAYING FOOTBALL? Remember when Bowles kept starting him? That is the definition of coaching malpractice.

  15. buccintimeforchanges Says:

Glazers, time to drop the hammer on the organization. Bring in some real football folks that know what they are doing. Not Jason Licht who is a pretend GM. He wears Brady’s ring and claims it is his. Bunch of fake front office people and coaches. Pretenders.

    Clean the house!

  16. MelvinJunior Says:

I don’t have a major problem with throwing there in that particular situation, especially when they’re stacking the box (the one before the 2:00 minute warning). BUT, it has to be a EASY completion (quick and short), and IN-BOUNDS. You’ve got all those sure-handed “weapons” at WR and RWhite. SURELY, you have ‘A PLAY’ in your playbook that is specifically designed FOR just that exact situation. EVERY great OC does

  17. Sal Volatile Says:

What would be the easiest and possibly the safest decision for the owners to make ? Lose out for the season
They could then announce that Bowles and Grizz will remain but Bowles would hire a DC with a new staff and player overhaul.
They would need to beg Baker to extend and with the money saved by getting rid of AWJr and Zyon and some restructures pay him enough for that to happen.
Then resign Mike for a year big money.
    Wave goodby to Reddick.
Retool the roster where necessary, draft well and hope they can sell it to the fans.
It’s probably their best and only choice.
    It could work.

  18. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The defense sucks and is populated with a bunch of mentally weak players.

I would guess that Richard Sherman “Knows Things” through Dean. The pregame show highlighted their relationship and had video clips of them wrestling with each other before games. Tony Gonzalez then said “You have a big brother relationship with him,” to which Sherman affirmed.

  19. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

There has been in game coaching malpractice from Bowels since his first season here!

  20. PSL Bob Says:

The other point McFadden made, something I posted yesterday, is Bowles’ deciscion to take the penalty after the sack. That would have made it 3rd and very long rather than 2nd and super long. Why give them another down to make something happen after they’ve been shredding our defense all night? That decision was squarely on Bowles!

  21. Saskbucs Says:

I can’t sit here and say the Bucs should have been running because that’s the conservative playcalling that has lost us games in the past. You go run and go 3 and out, we are sitting here talking about how we needed to be aggressive to close the game.

Baker blew it, Falcons disguised it and tricked him but he blew it. Then the D blew it and let’s be honest, we have seen Bowles D blow games a lot more than we have seen Baker blow them.

Now, I am for the run game closing it out but we have to see creativity with it. Pony package stuff like the play White got his 20 yard run. Misdirection, spread em with no back and call a Baker draw… you wanna do those things, I am here for it but standard runs from heavy to close a game don’t usually work for the Bucs.

  22. Whatevs Says:

Stop with the new OC excuse for the Grizz. He is an NFL OC and it is week 15. If he can’t do the job by now, fire him

  23. Sal Volatile Says:

One more thing, totally redo special teams players and coach.
Bring new talent to the offense coaching staff and examine the playbook and system.
Seriously examine the training staff and focus on injury prevention even if that means new turf at RayJay.
Get Ronde more involved with the coaching staff.
    Don’t forget the O line.
I won’t mention the sack situation.
That’s not too much to ask is it ?

  24. NCbucfan Says:

    3rd and 28!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Brooks Says:

Be patient we will lose the next three games then The Purge will start there is light at the end of the tunnel

  26. BucU Says:

There’s a damn good chance this “team” loses out. Im fine with it. Time to come to terms with who we are. A bad football team with a bad coaching staff.

  27. CyberDilemma Says:

When the offense throws an interception at midfield, you are putting your defense in a precarious position. Didn’t we learn that during all the Jamies years? Even the great Bruce Arians had a losing record when he had a QB with the Bucs throwing picks. The last 5 weeks Baker has been gifting us with his interception abilities.

  28. NCbucfan Says:

Grizz has not been great this year. However Baker is the one that threw the ball behind Ebuka. He had a step, put the ball in the right spot and it’s game over! 3rd and 28!!!!!!

  29. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

No situational awareness by the OC or QB.

4-minute offense, strip the clock of as much time as possible.

Get in position to score and make it a 2-score game.

Shot down by a crap throw, on a textbook route into triple coverage.

Great play by a defender, but you can go all the way back to the Texans game to see another example of getting too gotdamn cute for NO REASON.

Chaad had about 36 yards on 4 carries, we get into the RZ and this fool Grizzarabge decided to go empty set for 3 straight passes from like 17 yards and we settled for 3. Prime example of leaving points on the field, but let those that like to over-generalize the outcomes of Bucs games. We had to “comeback” from THAT

We could’ve been up 11/15 points if, if the play calling made sense and the execution was at a high enough level, but that hasn’t been the 2025 Bucs in any phase of the game this season. Flashes sure, but consistently has been evading this team all year long

  30. CMallie Says:

Todd Bowles may very well be a defensive genius; in fact, I believe that he is and would excel without the distraction of trying to do a job (head coach) that he clearly isn’t suited for. It’s insanity to think that every coordinator can also be a head coach, and even worse to think that a coordinator can wear both hats successfully. It is not a knock on Bowles to say he isn’t suited to be a head coach…..neither are 90% of the people drawing breath on a daily basis. I also don’t think that every purpose built head coach is suited to be a coordinator. Why do we keep trying to force square pegs through round holes?? All it does is set people up for failure.

  31. jcscycles Says:

Use. Tucker and White to runit and run out the clock. Grizz is obsessed with Bucky and this was not the situation for that.

We need an OC that has experience calling plays.

  32. NCbucfan Says:

They lost 4 yards on the first running play. It was the right decision to throw. Ebuka was open, Bake threw behind him. Simple as that. With that being said, 3rd and 28!!!!!!!!!

  33. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    Chip Kelly ‘26.

  34. Joe Says:

What are they waiting for? I live in another state.

Well, first Darcie lives in Tampa. Bryan lives in Palm Beach.

What do you want them to do? Show a guy up who they (personally) like a lot? Pay an extra $1-2 million to have another guy coach three games and wear the title “interim?” Why?

Go ahead and search how many head coaches the Glazers have fired before the end of the season. Caution: it will take you a while to find one because they never have. So why do you expect them to start now?

The Glazer Family *never* does anything in public. That’s not their MO. Never has been. Never will be. Just to put your mind at ease, Joe was told years ago the Glazers were interviewing candidates in OCTOBER 2013 for their coaching opening in JANUARY 2014.

For all Joe knows they already have a handshake deal on a new coach. Not saying they do and not saying they don’t. But they have in the past.

Just because you don’t see or hear something from the Glazer Family — and they never broadcast anything they do — doesn’t mean nothing is going on behind the scenes.

Look how fast the Glazers and Licht got Bruce Arians. That wasn’t done overnight. Look how fast the Glazers got Chucky. That was done overnight. 🙂

If you really ask yourself this question you will come to the correct conclusion:

If Bowles comes back, do you think anything will be different?

  37. Couch Fan Says:

This was my thoughts to when watching. The running game had been working, why not let them close the game out?… This isnt an excuse for the defense at all. But it was more than just the defense that lost us this game.

    Journalism in the 21st Century:

Hey guys, anyone notice that this video of McFadden, on Instagram, was liked by Antoine Winfield, Sr.?

    (Ahem)

  39. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Jugheadfla2 – My best guess is Lickt did not have to try very hard convincing or selling the Glazers on Todd. More than likely, they were already all-in, and was all THEIR decision, that HE even got the job in the first place. ALSO, they were all DESPERATE, while only trying to help save face for LOSING COHEN. So, they just ‘double-downed’ on STUPID and more WEAKNESS.

Just please stop though, with all the “have they fired Bowles yet” BS. They are NOT “firing” Bowles right now, until the season is OVER. So, forget-it. It is pointless, to continue beating-it into the GROUND all day long, EVERY single day. When, it is a GIVEN. Everyone already KNOWS that he needs to fired, and more than likely, WILL BE. But, EVERYONE also knows that it will not be until AFTER the season is OVER. Now, if for whatever reason it does NOT happen then… THEN, you can start going nuts again. But, you can forget-it FOR NOW. Because, it is NOT HAPPENING. So, move on and stop repeating the same damn (‘empty’) thing over and over again. “Uhhhh… Duhhhhh… Has Bowles Been Fired Yet!?” -NOOOOOOO. And, he’s NOT going to be. You have to already know this!

  40. Joe Says:

My best guess is Lickt did not have to try very hard convincing or selling the Glazers on Todd.

It was a package deal negotiated by Arians. Bowles was going to succeed Arians whenever Arians retired. It was all set up when Arians agreed to come here.

That’s interesting Joe, but why all the performative art with BA wanting BL ?

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m like NYBucfan here..3rd and 28 guys. Need I call another witness to the stand? You lose to the lowly Saints and Falcons at home back to back? And you cannot win at least 1 of 3 coming out of the bye? No need for jury deliberations. What say ye all members of the Jury?
Guiilty your honor on all counts.
Judge…HC Bowles you are hereby banished and fired from the Buc organization forever.

  44. BucsFan81 Says:

It was 3rd and 28. Bowles defense is so bad it’s like Madden football. No team
Should be able to convert that. I hope the glazers fire Bowles and get a real head coach in here. I think it’s a coaching issue and some players on the team just don’t care. However there is more than enough talent on this team to win games and beat mediocre teams such as Atlanta and Saints.

  45. Sal Volatile Says:

I have only stated what I thought may be the owners only real choice. Maybe the owners don’t care how it turns out but that would be a real hypocritical position after the 50th anniversary documentary. If they fire Bowles just who would fill his position ? Would the owners start the old retread coach merry go round or take a chance on an unproven young talent. In such disarray what capable coach would take the job ? Why would Baker want to stay under those circumstances. What would Jason do ?

  46. Oneilbuc Says:

The only thing I didn’t like is when we were up by 14 he should have just ran the ball other than that I’m not going to blame him for Baker Mayfield missing open receivers like he did that’s the problem.

  47. Oneilbuc Says:

Jason Licht is not a good GM to me.

  48. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Everything needs to get better. Offense, special teams, defense, coaching, players, conditioning/medical trainers. It’s not one problem you can pinpoint and shift the focus to.

3-0 in Superbowls is what matters and to get there everything above, one at a time has to be sorted through. Everything has to be uncovered in the organization and modified. All 32 teams are trying to do the exact same thing.

It’s about setting the team up better than the rest of the league, not best as possible. Then capitalizing and seizing the opportunity.

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker ain’t worth another contract after next year they need to get younger at that position to go with our young receivers and our young runningback.

  50. Greg Says:

I have to disagree with McFadden on taking the penalty, this defense was going to give up a first down no matter what because they’re a bunch of candy asses!

  51. Pewter Power Says:

Shouldn’t the head coach be telling the OC to run the ball? Grizzard is a first time coordinator so if Bowles is dumb enough to sit there like a goon and say nothing whatsoever he deserves to be fired

@ Greg agreed, it could’ve been 4th and 20, and we prob would’ve given it up!

  54. NCbucfan Says:

Kirk Cousins has like a 135 passer rating against us average the last 3 games. That has to be the highest in any 3 games stretch for a non HOF Qb in NFL history. Bowles might as well take a bow to him.

  55. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Sal Volatile – Are YOU entirely incapable of comprehension!? BAKER. HAS. ALREADY. “EXTENDED.” PERIOD. HE JUST ‘RE-SIGNED’ LAST OFF-SEASON. HE SIGNED. A. ‘THREE-YEAR.’ DEAL. So, HE STILL HAS ‘TWO-MORE’ FULL-SEASONS LEFT, AFTER THIS SEASON. And, YOU continue to spew THIS PURE NONSENSE ABOUT BAKER’S FRIGGIN’ CONTRACT SITUATION. Baker’s contract right now, is THE VERY LAST THING, that is of ANY CONCERN. Period. End of Story. It’s DONE. OVER WITH.

  56. #1bucsfan Says:

Joe I agree with part of it. Yes the defense should not have allowed them to come back but the reality is our defense is rotten and we have to score more a lot more points to overcome. It shouldn’t be that way but that’s what we got and turning the ball over with how rotten our defense is the worst thing we can do.

Yes Melvin I am capable of comprehension but you aren’t.
Baker has been in Tampa 3 years, Canales, Coen, Grizzard, ’23 ’24 ’25.
In ’23 he signed a 1 year prove it deal.
    He then signed a 3 year deal, ’24 ’25 ’26 ( ’27 ’28 voided ).
For us folks not under the influence this is currently 2025.
2026 NEXT YEAR will be Bakers last under contract. In 2027 he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

  70. Rod Munch Says:

McFadden cited Grizzard for having Baker Mayfield throw in the fourth quarter when instead, McFadden believed the Bucs should have gone ground-and-pound.

    ———-

But we have an MVP QB – how do you not trust him with the ball in his hands? He’s the MVP!

Also, this guy is an idiot. The Bucs had to keep scoring to win the game, not sit on the lead and try to run out the clock. You expect your QB to NOT throw a huge INT – to NOT miss wide open guys in key situations – certainly he should be counted on when he’s the MVP.

Baker choked, and the Bucs lost because of it.

The idiot saying the Bucs should have tried to run out the clock however is dumber than even Grizz the Wiz Kid is.

  71. HC Grover Says:

The players also malfunction. I was a team effort to lose.

  72. firethecannons Says:

OK thanks Joe appreciate your response as all of that I did not or realize.

  73. Larrd Says:

Baker made a bad play. I would doubt they could have done nothing but run and get two first downs. The last run I remember they lost four yards up the middle.

  74. PriMech54 Says:

  75. What it is Says:

You few haters are a joke. You love to act like no other qb throws interceptions or throws bad passes. Only the idiots here believe your hate filled bs against Mayfield. Give it a rest, you have been found out. All qb’s throw interception and bad passes. Last year you haters were complaining about him throwing bad passes all while he had the second best completion percentage out of all the quarterbacks, 72%. But he throws more bad passes than anybody you said-no he threw far less than 98% of all other qb’s. Dumber than a box of rocks.

  76. FortMyersDave Says:

Good points from “What it is”. I would also chime in that Baker is playing hurt behind an OL with 2 gaping holes at Guard. A healthy Baker would have beat the ATL and Saints despite Bowles’ D and the special teams. I fault Licht for not having a decent back up for Baker. Teddy was awful, he did not even travel with the team to LA, how was that allowed? Also his one key play got JMac’s neck broken. JMac BTW should not have been in that game, Teddy should have been throwing to pra tice squad wannabes.

  77. Bucschamp Says:

bakers interception didn’t lose us this game. Dumb defense did
