Baker Mayfield Says Jason Pierre-Paul Signing Gets Players “Excited”

December 9th, 2025

Jason Pierre-Paul (right) on a glorious night about five years ago.

The Colts just signed 44-year-old quarterback Phillip Rivers to possibly replace injured Daniel Jones.

The longtime Pro Bowl QB has played since the 2020 season. Joe read comments and writings on various Colts blogs, and the move seems to be embraced by Colts fans.

Joe sees a lot of Bucs fans angered by the Bucs signing 36-year-old edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul this week to their practice squad. He’s been out of football a year and also had a storied career.

Perhaps many of these Bucs fans are just irked because the Bucs are on a 2-5 run after a brutal home loss Sunday? And maybe Colts fans are upbeat only because their team has had a good and somewhat surprising season?

Regardless, JPP was at practice today and the Bucs are deciding what, if anything, he has to offer.

Baker Mayfield commented on the signing today.

“Obviously, [JPP is] a guy that’s had a ton of production over the years,” Mayfield said. “[He] was a huge part of the Super Bowl here. Yeah, [JPP adds] just a little more juice in the building; guys get excited about that. It puts the pressure on. Obviously, when you bring guys in like that, you’re trying to elevate the standard, the performance level. It pushes us on offense. We haven’t done enough to score more points, quite frankly.”

Joe’s glad to hear some Bucs are excited to have JPP in the building. Anything that might stop Haason Reddick the Bucs from sleepwaking gets a thumbs-up from Joe.

Of course, nothing should be expected on the field of play from JPP, or Rivers.

Expect the worst, hope for the best I reckon

  2. garbs65 Says:

Wow. We are reaching now. Why didn’t we do some reaching before the trade deadline this season. Hey, I hope he comes in and outplays our starters. He can’t be any worse, for sure. But I’m thinking more like Hasaan Reddick…ineffective.

  3. PanhandleBuc Says:

At this point, can it hurt???

  4. Tucker Says:

Jpp isn’t pressuring no one opposing QBs or bucs players like one joe likes to say settle down. If it takes a 37 year old best and decent plays behind him to add “juice” to the building then it only amplifies the dumpster fire that the bucs are becoming under Todd so sad.

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

Reddick has the 3rd highest salary on the team this season. He’s now the 3rd best outside linebacker on the left side. Licht outmaneuvered the league yet again. Get him on The Ring of Fire(d)!

  6. Tucker Says:

Tom Brady’s last season here when he was here part-time started yelling at his teammates for under performing when he himself was one of the under performing parts of it went over really well with the team didn’t it jpp isn’t changing anything.

  7. 813bucboi Says:

    whatever….

if we had to go out and get extra “juice” then theres a HUGE problem with the culture…

if we had to go out and get JPP to “puts the pressure on”, then theres an GIGANTIC problem!!!!

if players and coaches are just now trying to, “elevate the standard” instead of after the DET game, then we have a MONUMENTAL problem!!!!

either way you cut it, BUCS have a sizable problem at hand….

    hire klint kubiak

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  8. Lol Says:

Excited for the end of the season maybe. what a F*&%KING JOKE

  9. Teacherman Says:

    You wanna fix the Bucs?

    1. Replace SVD with Deion Jones against his old team the Falcons. Deion Jones can cover the middle of the field. SVD like KJ Britt, can’t!

    2. Start Tucker. He has fresh legs. Every NFL defense is tired.

    3. Wirfs at LG and Chukwuma at LT. Yes. Wirfs is massive. You wanna run the ball until the Super Bowl? Put Wirfs at LG. He will open holes.

    4. Bench Logan Hall for JPP. Logan Hall and SVD need to be benched.

    5. Get Izien on the field. We miss his fire, his hitting and his competitive spirit.

  10. OneAndThree Says:

So the logic is: Nothing positive will come of this, but if you don’t parrot this as a positive development, you are just a negative Nancy. Wow, I’ve truly seen it all now.

Who’s next? Mike Alstott looks lie he’s in game shape still. Ronde Barber was a HOFer. Sign the man!!! Derrick Brooks could help the LB core for sure!!!

    Pure insanity.

Can’t wait to see the headlines after we get seal clubbed Thursday Night.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

At this point, I’ll be happy just to see him play again. Winning, we’ll see, but at least we get to see a future HoFer play for a few games.

  12. DungyDance Says:

Super. Who’s next? Hey, Bowles was “recently” a DB with the Redskins. Added bonus, he definitely knows our system.

  13. Thisisouryear!!!! Says:

As skeptical as I am, I’m definitely hopeful. I hated when he left, he left hurt and injured. I’m wondering after a couple years off if his body is healthy and he can squeeze a few more productive games out of that all pro body.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    OneAndThree Says:
“…f you don’t parrot this as a positive development, you are just a negative Nancy.”

Let’s have a little honesty here…you are always a negative nancy, lol.

Signing JPP is a good move, even if he isn’t here to produce.

  15. Upstate NY Buc Fan Says:

Well, if anything, it’ll show these young kids what be being dedicated to football really is instead of loafing every damn game I won’t mention names!! Go Tampa

  16. First Last Says:

One of these crazy signings will actually produce something. Like I hope he gets 6 sacks so he has an even 100 sacks before he retires. Hell if he goes ham these next few games maybe the offense can play a bit more free. Idk, this team needs something like anything to make changes. I think Mike Evans being gone has hurt a lot more than we realize.

  17. BPBucsfan Says:

    Any word on signing Suh?

  18. DJR589 Says:

As much as we all praise Jason Licht, myself included, he has certainly played a part in this debacle. The Bucs haven’t had a strong 4 man rush for several years. Zero edge rush. Lee screams about every week. This year was no different! We all see it! Even the casual fan can see we have no rush! Nothing scary. We make average QBs look like they should all have the nickname “509”. It doesn’t take a trained eye to see this. When the trade deadline was looming we should have went after a pass rusher. And now look, in December our weak ass defense is being destroyed and our solution is to sign JPP?!! Not a good look for Jason Licht!

  19. Brooks Says:

Really!! This team is totally falling apart. Let’s wear the creamsicle jerseys the rest of the season

  20. Buckit Says:

    Teacherman:
    6. Bring Garrett Greene up from the PS, send Ryan Miller down. He is doing a poor job on kick coverage, and is non-existent in the passing game. Greene has some juice, and is hungry for an opportunity.

  21. Cleanhouse Says:

I agree with just about all of Teacherman’s takes!

  22. Cleanhouse Says:

Jason Licht has been reading his own headlines for a while how he’s a top GM- He was a top GM when he brought in Tom Brady, JPP, Suh, Leonard Fournette, Gronk and AB. A team full of super stars is why we won. Half of that had to do with Brady demanding the signings. Licht got too far away from winning through free agency. Reddick was a reasonable reach considering his early career production. Maybe he’ll do something here late. Never know

  23. Cleanhouse Says:

Also, Devin White was excellent- we caught him while he was trending upward- dude was a heat seeking missile when he was checked in and we rode him t the Super Bowl title. He carried that defense through the playoffs. Say what you want, it’s not true if it’s not what I just said

  24. BayouBullet Says:

How cute… Joe’s putting lipstick on a pig.

  25. Zoocomics Says:

Doesn’t this go back to the play accountability discussion? It’s what Licht has failed to build here, which are guys that elevate others, not just by their performance, but their energy and sometimes with words.

What’s truly disappointing is we have several holdovers from the Super Bowl Team and not one of these guys has enough bite when we need them to be vocal leaders on the team. 2 of which were given the richest NFL contracts at their position, and yet these guys have no teeth to tell the guy next to them to stop F-ing up. Instead we have to rely on old man JPP to do this for them!?

If you’re not going to have coach that brings that fire to these players, you have to have the players to do it and I don’t think that’s happening on either side of the ball. Frustrating, but it’s those “dawgs” that keep talented to football teams from snowballing losses, I really believe that. And supposed top 10 franchise QBs who were in the MVP discussions after 4 games of the season don’t lose 4 out of 5 games coming out of a bye. I don’t care the context. They simply don’t. it’s rare.

  26. OrlandoBucFan Says:

This smacks of desperation. Maybe Licht should have traded for a pass rusher before the trade deadline rather than pull an artifact off the couch. With that said, JPP can be no worse than what we currently have on defense.

  27. Bucfanforever Says:

But how well can JPP still cover a Wide Receiver?

  28. gotbbucs Says:

If he ends up on the game day roster at any point this season….wow, what an indictment on the job that the coaches and front office have down leading up to this point.

  29. dbbuc711 Says:

New coach next season might not want to keep some of the dead wood

  30. buccintimeforchanges Says:

What? Why? Excited? He can’t play…sad stuff.

There are no leaders on the team.

Jason’s choir boys are soft as baby ish.

    CLEAN HOUSE!!!!

  31. heyjude Says:

Hey, the Colts signed Philip Rivers at 44 years old. Who knows. JPP might be that juice we need. Let’s see what happens Thursday night.

  32. budlikedthebucarros Says:

i look at other games and i would be excited somewhat to see the bucs actually play some football to win I can run around a field for 3 mil

  33. Beeej Says:

On the bright side, Ben Chukwuma is a REALLY good left tackle!

  34. Kenton Smith Says:

Zoocomics. Mahomes is arguably the best QB of this era. He’s 1-3 coming out of the bye this year. “I don’t care the context” (we know you don’t) “They simply don’t” (oh, but they do).
