Tristan Wirfs Said Sometimes Baker Mayfield Starts A Dustup On Purpose

October 29th, 2025

Has Baker Mayfield stories.

One reason Baker Mayfield’s Bucs’ teammates, both on offense and defense, admire him so much is Mayfield will do whatever it takes to help the Bucs win.

If that means he has to go full-blown Mike Alstott and run over a linebacker or stiff-arm a corner into a bench so he can gut out a first down, so be it.

Countless Bucs have admitted Mayfield’s aggressive if not physical style and his trash talk fires them up.

Appearing on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast co-hosted by former NFL players Will Compton and Taylor Lewan, Tristan Wirfs said Mayfield’s aggressive style is very much genuine. However, Wirfs said, he knows sometimes Mayfield will get into a hassle with an opposing defense on purpose if he thinks the Bucs need a spark.

Wirfs said he is adamant, and his fellow Bucs offensive linemen believe as well, that if a defense gives Mayfield any s(p)it, the entire unit is going after the guilty party across the line of scrimmage.

Mayfield once started a scrap against the slimy Saints last year at The Licht House in an effort to snap the Bucs out of a mental funk.

“I think he just fires everybody up,” Wirfs’ said of Mayfield’s edge. “And I think he does it on purpose sometimes. Well, I know he does it on purpose sometimes.

“I remember the Saints game last year. Second time we played them later in the year. We came out slow, and [Mayfield] gets into a little scuff, and we’re all, like, the whole [line], we just swarm over there. Get into a little tussle.”

When the offensive line attacked the slimy Saints, protecting their franchise quarterback, Wirfs said on the film later in the week you could see Mayfield slowly walking away like no big deal. Mission accomplished.

“He’s just walking away from an explosion,” Wirfs laughed.

Wirfs said a short time after the hassle, Mayfield went up to him and asked, “Did that help?”

Other cool items regarding Mayfield that Wirfs shared:

* Wirfs is jealous that last year Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow bought all of his offensive linemen Samurai swords. Since, Wirfs said he’s been dropping hints to Mayfield (“A sword is not crazy”) that a Christmas present of a Samurai sword would be welcome. Wirfs is also nudging Mayfield that a golf cart would be an appropriate holiday gift as well.

* When the Bucs first signed Mayfield, Wirfs said he had no idea there was any quarterback competition between Kyle Trask and Mayfield, that Mayfield was brought in to start. (JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman reported early in camp that the alleged “competition” was nothing more than a sham.)

You didnt look too good vs saints big T. You are the anchor you need to lead that oline. Physically or verbally

  3. 813bucboi Says:

Oline has to improve after the bye….

maybe they need to reshuffle the oline…idk but our OG C OG combo is playing soft and weak….

run game seems better when bredenson was at C…Barton doesnt have the same burst as he did last year…

    hopefully the bye recharges everyone!!!!

    6-2!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

    Brilliant.

Since the Vikes are in dire need of a QB now that Wentz is on IR, maybe Jason can get an offensive lineman or a MLB for Teddy?

Good point about Barton. Perhaps the temporary shift to left tackle messed him up somehow?

Possibly the league has tape on him from last year and has a better idea on how to attack him?

Most likely he needs another off season in the weight room to increase his strength!

Thank you for sharing the podcast. Tristan is such a humble and great guy. Love his Baker shirt. And hearing him talk about the AB fiasco that day was hilarious. Mike trying to get AB to keep his pads on was a hoot! All good stuff!

  8. ModHairKen Says:

Rest up, boys. The second half is where the legends are made.

Wirfs, if you want to be more than Anthony Munoz, you’ve got to get that SB.

Baker, think about these guys: Tom Brady, Trent Dilfer, Steve Young, Doug Williams, and Brad Johnson all played for this franchise and all won rings in their careers. You are second to them until you deliver one.

    Now is the time.

  9. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Ken

    Does Munoz have a ring?

  10. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I think Barton’s issues are caused by his position shifts plus the rotating guard to his right side. That’s a lot for a 2nd year guy. Bye week will give him a chance to clear his head and I’ll bet he has a strong 2nd half.

  11. Oscar Says:

In this past game against the Saints, the oline played terribly in pass protection and run blocking. Baker was, I’m sure, somewhat banged up. I think he intentionally played a very conservative game and didn’t run intentionally to protect himself to an extent and to avoid giving the Saints any opportunity to take him out, especially after all the talk during the week about how the Saints play dirty.
After re-watching the game, I think Baker played a very good game. His accuracy was fine and there were at least 3 definite drops. He should have had 2 touchdowns, the one to Otton which was overturned and the one to Egbuka, which was dropped. It was not an easy catch, but definitely catchable. If you add the touchdowns and the 3 extra completions, his ypa, completions pct and the td pct all go way up and his rating would have been well above 100. Such a fine line.

    Cottleville & drunkbuc

i think the two of you make great points!!!!

the answer is definitely somewhere in between lol

    6-2!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Lightningvinny1 Says:

To be fair Trent , Steve and Doug all got their rings after leaving the Bucs ,, and I’m fairly certain Wirfs already has a ring ,,, other than that, let the boys rest and we will see you a week from Sunday

  14. Leighroy Says:

If you think Baker is 2nd to Trent Dilfer, then you need to get drug tested.

ModHair “Baker, think about these guys: Tom Brady, Trent Dilfer, Steve Young, Doug Williams, and Brad Johnson all played for this franchise and all won rings in their careers. You are second to them until you deliver one.”

    Ranked –>
    Tom Brady = legend/goat
Steve Young = easily second on the list… Derrick Brooks knee sent him into retirement.
Doug Williams = overrated, check his stats
Brad Johnson and especially Dilfer = average QBs that happened to play on teams with top 5 greatest defenses ever
It didn’t hurt Brad any that we had a coach that knew the Raiders playbook. Plus, our defense scored 18 points in our first super bowl (no doubt my mind Gruden helped them as well).

Compare Baker’s stats to Doug’s, Brad’s and Trent’s and see what I’m talking about. Those guys would be bottom 10 QBs today. A good QB back then is pretty much average today. It’s more of a QB driven league than ever. The ability to carry a team on his back and in close games in the final minute, only Brady and maybe Young sometimes, had that ability.
I will say, Young was close to being Mayfield sized/build and that dude could scramble! It’s also what did him in (ie. Brooks knee). Keep your head on a swivel, Baker!

  16. Cleanhouse Says:

What’s with this team and their manipulation of narratives? I find it strange and unnecessary. Over the top and annoying. They act like they’re playing a spy game or politics. They constantly lie and hide injury reports and constantly talk a huge game about their bust players that end up sucking. Ramirez, Braswell, Spence, Trask, etc. bunch of Nonsense.

Stop w the smoke and mirrors and go win another championship

  17. Irishmist Says:

The OL needs to pick up their performance if they want Samurai swords. Right now they don’t even deserve Ginsu knives.

  18. toopanca Says:

Disciplined formations with rifled muskets and bayonets ended the dominance of the samurai and their swords.

Given that the OL functions best as a disciplined unit, maybe Baker could treat his OL and their families, and send a message to Burrows by giving his OL players each a very good example of the Chassepot or Murata rifles with complete kit. It would be a more on point present.

Generic examples of the rifles can usually be had for less $2,000. Depending upon how far Baker wanted to take it, he could schedule a family retreat and provide each offensive lineman with a tailored uniform and a complete kit including bayonets.

Then, reserve a range and obtain a period instructor. With the family a safe distance away in a viewing stand, fire a few rounds at tackling dummies by rank with march back and reload, and then finish up with a bayonet chart stabbing the tackling dummies.

A pavilion and a live chef and a great meal, of course, with saki of Japanese beer for those who wish to partake. Activities for the kids. And, a motor coach to get everyone home safely.

Of course, once risk management got wind of it, every future contract would probably have a clause dedicated to preventing anything like it.

  19. JUAN Says:

The Baker has been off the last few weeks. He wants the moon to catch a touchdown. A good QB makes most of them throws. He needs to settle down and chill. If he scared of getting sacked he can always throw the ball out of bounds. C’mon Baker if you want to be in the $50 million a year club don’t play like a scrub. If Baker is hurt which I think he is Bridgewater is very capable of handling the offense as we have seen in preseason. It’s like most players say I’m not worried about the stats blah blah blah. So like I said at beginning of the season Bucs will go 14-3 or 13-4. We will definitely beat Patriots, Bills and maybe have a little trouble with Rams like usual and then we should win every game including the Superbowl!!!!!! NO MORE EXCUSES AFTER THE BYE WEEK!!!!

    😂

Agree about the rotation at RG causing problems for Barton and all. 3rd string RGs tend to do that.

    Go Bucs!

  21. Bartow Buc Says:

Football is a game of emotion. You can have all the ability in the world but if you lack emotion you are a subpar player.
If Baker senses the squad needs an emotional boost, he is the best at providing a spark that ignites the fire of emotion!!
I’ve seen this over and the over again, Baker Mayfield fights and finds a way to win. I can’t wait to see where he leads the Bucs during the remainder of this season !!

    Go Bucs !!
