Raheem Morris Is 1-4 On Opening Days

September 1st, 2025

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is a proven winner as an opening day head coach. Falcons head coach Raheem Morris is a proven loser.

Looking for a trend? This is a fun and timely one.

Bowles is 5-2 on opening days with a combination of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Josh McCown, Sam Darnold, Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield starting at quarterback. That includes his four years leading the Jets and terrorizing their fans.

Bowles is a perfect 3-0 as Bucs head coach on opening days, and he wasn’t playing patsies: tough opponents at Dallas (2022) and Minnesota (2023) and last year at home against Washington.

The Bucs face the Falcons at Atlanta on Sunday to open the 2025 season. Raheem has a 1-4 record as an opening day head coach. His lone win came in 2010 while leading the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay squeaked out a 17-14 win at home against the bumbling Browns and their washed out starting quarterback, Jake Delhomme.

Last year in Week 1, Raheem’s Falcons lost at home 18-10 to the Steelers.

Joe likes to say there are no coincidences in the NFL. Joe expects the Bucs to bring their A-game on Sunday. The Falcons? That’s unclear.

Run the ball, stay away from Jessie Bates, get after Penix. Ball game. Really wish we had Wirfs and then I don’t think this is a contest. As it is… see who shows up but I would like to think the Bucs are up for this one. Revenge and statement time.

Looking forward to seeing Barton and Bucky in year 2 along with a healthy deeper D. Go Bucs!

  2. LakelandBuc Says:

    The Bucs are my team
But the Falcons have weapons, and home field
I’m not gonna sleep on them

    Run the ball
Interesting. Everyone is super high on Bijon. Saquan annointed him the next best RB in the NFL. I wonder if Bucky and the Bucs have extra motivation to outperform Bijon.

No contest if we had Wirfs
I was thinking the same about Jmac. That injury really sucks. I have my fingers crossed Culp gets extra PT.

  4. Hunter Says:

Goes back to coaching almost every time. We, by no means, have a perfect coaching staff, BUT we are certainly lucky Baker Mayfield was available when he was. Had the Panthers had Canales, Baker would still be the Panthers QB.

  5. richbucsfan Says:

While know injuries are part of football, the Bucs need to rethink their preseason agenda. You have a climate controlled building yet choose to swelter in the heat. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s conditioning. It puts the training staff at a deficit. IVs everyday? Ice water baths? You’re begging for bodies to break down. And, look at what happened. Now, to be sure, the Steelers idiot can’t be defended. A freak injury? I suppose. But, the hamstrings, etc. are a direct result of overuse. Anyway, the agenda needs review. I just hate it that for yet another season is starting with the Bucs down a few key pieces.

  6. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Rah is 2-0 against the Bucs and Bowles.

We need to reverse that this year if we can.

  7. Cometowin2 Says:

If the running game is still strong and they don’t play soft a$$ pass defense the whole game I think we win. Use 12 personnel frequently with Cade if healthy and Payne/Culp to help out Heck. Mostly 4 man pass rush and play more man and we have a chance at some turnovers.

  8. HC Grover Says:

Bowles better hop he loses again.

  9. BucsOnDeck24 Says:

Raheem Said his team will be “Tampa Ready” …. I believe this is a good omen.

“Joe likes to say there are no coincidences in the NFL. ”

Cause Joe likes to say it doesn’t make it true 🤔✌🏼

Atlanta has a LOT of talent and good coaching…. And so do we.

Hopefully we snag the momentum early. Love to see us get a couple of picks. Going to need to stuff Bijon and their run game.

  11. Aqualung Says:

Expect a carbon copy of last year’s combined 70 points and 1000 yards allowed to crippled Kirk’s Cousin who barely threw for 2000 against everyone else he played.

Bucs need Baker to lead a 40 burger because Todd will give ATL all the 7 yard completions they want for free. Penix will look like an MVP.

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t mean nothin. Bucs had better bring it like Hell. That kid Pennix is unpredictable and looking to make a name for himself. Rah says his team is super ready for our Bucs. We wil be in enemy territory. Gotta play hard and fast.

  13. First Last Says:

Odds are in our favor, you don’t usually win 3 times in a row on close 1 score games

  14. JimBobBuc Says:

The Bucs aren’t the Steelers so the game is up for Grabs. Raheem is 2-0 vs Todd with Lame QB Kirk Cousins. Cousins was so bad last year that Penix is a big upgrade. This game will be a dogfight and it will be decided by turnovers and the last 5min. LFG!

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

JimBobBuc, it could easily boil down to the last 5 minutes and if it does we’ve got one great kicker. We don’t talk about him enough. And a decent punter? Wow, even our special teams have improved! I’m taking the Bucs but first game division rival on the road will be anything but easy.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Heh. I guess stats really are for losers, Raheem.

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Studies have shown. About 20% more non-contact injuries occurred per play on a turf surface than a grass surface.

Recovery time is longer on turf too.

Athletes don’t use ice baths to cool down after being in the heat. It’s used to recover faster. If I get in an ice bath after a long run I won’t be sore the next day and i’m able to do a recovery run opposed to needing a rest day.

Practicing in the Glazer shed all the time is not the answer.

  18. MadMax Says:

Dont take this game lightly….this is a MUST WIN Todd!!!!

  19. Pewter Power Says:

Honestly I mean are we really comparing Raheem’s current roster to the roster of the lost decade? Who wouldn’t have had a losing record

  20. Aqualung Says:

Our hybrid half time double job guy could lose with a roster picked from the Top 100 of all time.

Watch 26 losses over the last three seasons. Then apply for a liver transplant.

  21. Oxycondomns Says:

raheem the dream is one of few coaches i can say bowles is definitely better than yet he was 0-2 vs him last season. raheem going to do raheem and start penix

  22. Saskbucs Says:

@SlyPirate… I am nervous about Heck in pass pro. I think minus Jarrett with a couple rookies out there, our OL can open holes and control clock.

I hope our offense is firing on all cylinders but with the injuries on both sides, I think the D on both teams will win more often than not. As long as London Pitts and Mooney/Hodge aren’t constantly finding holes in the pass D I will be happy. I’m pretty confident, as I am most weeks with Bowles D and this team, that Bijan isn’t gonna win this game for them.

  23. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Todd himself said he set the team up to score more points than the other team. I don’t see how the defense is going to be any different than it always has. That’s who he is and what he does. If they don’t score more than the other team he blames the o coordinator and injurys. They know that and the last two got it done and moved up to HC positions.

  24. Bucs4Ever Says:

    just win baby

  25. Sal Says:

Bowles hasn’t figured him out yet #!! 0 and 2

  26. Aqualung Says:

    Tdod Blwoes.

  27. heyjude Says:

All in on coincidences. Although, still concerned about the Falcons home field advantage and the calls that the refs make in lieu of Atlanta. Bucs need to come out bold and keep the lead all the way through. Go Bucs! Win!!

  28. Beeej Says:

We win 34-16. I have spoken.
