Mike Alstott: Baker Mayfield Can Wear My Number
September 24th, 2025
Mike Alstott has a favorite Buccaneer.
Man, how fun would it be for Baker Mayfield to wear No. 40 for one game.
One guy who would be happy to see it? He’s the Bucs’ ultimate No. 40, Buccaneers Ring of Honor fullback/running back Mike Alstott (who proudly drives a Bill Currie Ford vehicle.)
Alstott joined CBS HQ today live from a local Tampa area high school where he was talking about leadership. The topic turned to football and host Kyle Long asked Alstott if there was a player he would want to wear his number. No Buccaneer has been issued No. 40 since Alstott hung up his cleats following the 2006 season.
There was no hesitation from the A-train.
“Yeah, Baker. Baker Mayfield, no question,” Alstott said. “That guy does flips, you know, will do anything in his power to put that team on his back and let them be successful on him. His motivaton each and every day, I love that. I wish I was part of [his] huddle. That was exactly me and it didn’t matter what the call in was to do, the job was going to get done.”
Joe thought that was damn special.
Alstott later told a story about how he was in a local bar grabbing a drink with his son and to watch a game. To Alstott’s surprise, he said, Baker Mayfield rolled into the bar with a group of offensive linemen. Alstott and Long agreed that great teams have that kind of camaraderie.

Awesome!
The crowd erupted when the big screen showed WD40 sitting in a booth together last Sunday!

I think the NFL ought to let Hall of Famers and players who have numbers retired, pick players on their team to wear their numbers during throwback games. For example:
Vea could wear 99
LVD could wear 55
Winfield 47
Dean 20
Mayfield 40
But it would be entirely up to the retired player. Maybe they’d all want Mayfield and he’d have to wear 99554740?

WillieG I think that would be an awesome idea, plus it would be a boon for additional jersey sales.

Cool idea willie

Don’t know about Dean sporting #20. Dean a little too soft. Ronde might get a little offended.

Wonder if Feisty Bake and his OLine posse spied Alstott and son and invited them over to the table?

That Pro Bowl story about Baker that was posted on here recently and now Alstott’s story about Baker at the bar with the OL validates the kind of guy Baker is off and on the field. Great guy!
WillieG – Excellent idea!

Joe, love reading your updates – I make it a point to log in multiple times a day to see what news you’re sharing. That said, it’s becoming a bit more difficult to read and focus given all of the typos I’ve been noticing lately (e.g. using ‘wear’ about vs. ‘where’. Just thought I’d share that feedback, but overall thank you and keep up the good work.

I seem to recall a comment from #40 saying he never has to pay for a beer in a bar! I’d buy him several if I saw him.

Seems to be a lot of people talking about our quarterback lately and wondering if he can orchestrate these last minute drives when it “matters”, most, as in the playoffs. Got me and a couple friends curious on how our quarterback stacks up against the other top quarterbacks in the playoffs who are still playing. So we decided to look at the last 2 years playoff passer ratings of the best quarterbacks.
MAYFIELD-120
STAFFORD-112
JACKSON-110
HURTS-107
ALLEN-107
MAHOMES-103
GOAT-88
We took the 2006 & 2027 years for Bradys stats. Each of those years he went to the AFC Championship.
I think this shows winning is more than quarterback play, a lot more. Football is truly a team sport, probably the ultimate team sport. No matter how good you are, without another teammate running, blocking, throwing or catching, your skills just aren’t going to matter much by themselves. According to these stats, it “looks” like Tom Brady never should have won much of anything postseason. But we all know he IS the GOAT of winning postseason. Why does the GOAT have an 88 PR and some of these guys who haven’t won diddly squat have a considerably higher passer rating? ? It can’t be all their fault like some like to push. I think who wins superbowls belongs to the best organizations that knows how to extract every bit of talent from its players and coaches. And the others, they are just fumbling in the dark wait for someone to come along and save them.
It really is a team sport.

I’ve talked to Train many times at our local TexMex watering hole in St. Pete and I was sitting under the suite he was in with WD. He saw me waving at him below the suite and said “see you at Wicked”. It was a cool moment of acknowledgement that he made while he was celebrating his own legacy and it’s true, he’s really the nicest football player you will ever meet.

There are some striking similarities between “Bake” and the “A Train” Mike Alstott. Baker, like Mike, is tough, and unselfishly puts himself in precarious positions over and over again for the team !! Baker, like Mike, when he runs, runs hard !! Baker is a fighter like Mike !!
But ……. Mike Alstott has one thing Baker doesn’t have …. A Super Bowl Championship Ring !!
I believe Baker will be a Super Bowl Champion with the Buccaneers !!
Will it be this season? Time will tell!!
Go Bucs !! Beat the Eagles!!

Wow! Now that is a compliment Joe! Coming from the A-Train means more than just some taling head.
Good stuff Joe!
Go Bucs!
