High Marks For Charlie Heck

September 24th, 2025

Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry.

Bucs fans have a high bar when it comes to play at right tackle.

After three years of All-World Tristan Wirfs blocking for Tom Brady at the position, fans were treated to Luke Goedeke stepping in and impressing immediately.

The Bucs even made Goedeke one of the highest paid right tackles in the game.

Nobody expects a backup to fill the shoes of those beasts, but journeyman Charlie Heck has tried in the past two games.

After a cover-your-eyes night pass blocking in Houston, Heck was better Sunday against the Jets. That success was probably one part Heck actually starting and not coming off the bench, one part a lesser pass rush, and one part Heck settling in after getting live action against the Texans.

Joe can’t claim to be impressed by Heck, but Todd Bowles is.

I thought Charlie Heck did a heck of a job playing the right tackle side,” Bowles said on the radio show that bears his name (Joe listened on SiriusXM).

“It looks like he plays right tackle better than he plays left and he really settled in right there,” Bowles continued.

The assessment of Heck being a better right tackle made Joe laugh. Hell, the Bucs were so scared to play Heck at left tackle in Week 1, they overhauled their entire offensive line to make sure that didn’t happen.

Heck will have a lot more time at right tackle, unfortunately. Goedeke spent Sunday’s game on a scooter to keep weight off his bad foot.

Good job Heck. First reserve off the bench, mind you.
And no penalties for Heck last week!

    Give ‘em hell, Heck

  2. 813bucboi Says:

I agree with bowles….Heck played decent at RT imo…very serviceable….i dont see why he’s been trashed so much…he’s a reserve linemen for a reason but he’s getting the job done….

joe, whats the word on not that michael jordan?…

imo, this game vs philly comes down to containing j.davis and j.carter along with getting a hurts…our defense is built to stop the run so im not to concerned with barkley…

i think grizz shows a few new wrinkles this game to throw philly off and baker continues to play mistake free football!!!

    4-0!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  3. gbobucsfan Says:

I know he’s not a rookie but all it takes is one game to get that confidence rolling !!!

  4. Hodad Says:

I mentioned this yesterday Heck was the only O linemen without a penalty. He did fine, and I thought Klein was ok his first time out. Haggard was bad. We get Wirfs back, keep the left side the same. Don’t move Wirfs back to RT, need him at LT. Barton is decent there, it’s better having him at center with Ben back at LG.

  5. It's Corn Says:

I remember Skule getting torched by Aidan Hutchinson last year… but once these coaches have real game film on them against brutal opponents, they can work with these players and tend to improve them quickly.

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    What’s Bowles supposed to say?

The only reason Heck is “fine at RT” is because we don’t have Luke, we literally just had a game they chose not to play Heck by choice. Either way, Tristan comes back you put him at LT and have your, not just your best OLmen but a top 5 player on this team protect the QBs blindside.

So we can get the damn play action going.

  7. Lightningvinny Says:

How’s Jordan? Can he play RG? Or do we go w Klein

  8. Coburn Says:

Yeah I thought he did alright. Keep him at RT. If wirfs is good to go out everyone back and find the best RG on the squad

  9. gbobucsfan Says:

wirfs, jordan, barton, bredenson, heck – this is my vote…of course, this is if Jordan is healthy.

  10. Baker Bowl Says:

I mentioned this yesterday Heck was the only O linemen without a penalty

Wow, did not put that together while watching the game. I knew he had an improved level of play for sure, but now he for sure has some more of my respect.

I agree with you 100% about moving Wirfs to RT for now. First, I’m still on the fence about him and Godwin playing at all. With so many injuries, why not just let them continue to rest this game.

If they play at all, we’re talking about an OL with still 0/5 starters in their positions with him at RT vs 3/5 and a full starting blind side, if he plays, it’s a no-brainer for me.

  11. PanhandleBuc Says:

So, does Wirfs go back to LT and Barton back to center with that assessment?

  12. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Now I’m reading Bucs brass is asking media at todays practice to NOT report on the OL rotations

  13. Stpetematt Says:

Yes. Take a look at the Buccaneers depth chart on Buccaneers.com. It has Heck at RT, Wirfs at LT, Bredeson at LG, Barton back at C. Klein is listed as the RG.

  14. Baking with Grizz Says:

    Carberry is earning his money!
    Keep chopping that wood.
    LFG!!!!

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

TBBF has spent time on the scooter…..not fun.

  16. #99 the big fella Says:

3 2 1 any second now the aquaass will chime in with his continuous dislike for bowles

  17. Aqualung Says:

Aqualung loves Bowles. It’s concerning that he doesn’t know where his foot is. And impressive that some special posters can count backwards from 3.

  18. gbobucsfan Says:

Carter will eat Bredeson’s lunch all game!! Even Barton will have a tough time with him.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

Aqualung hangs around on here cos they have an audience. No audience, crickets. Wirfs will be starting which puts Barton back at center. Plus, it gives the Bucs offense some breathing room with the RBs and TEs. Sorry about Ko Kieft. CG14 would surprise me if he suits up. I know he’s been helping the coaches mentor EE2. If that dude doesn’t win OROTY, the NFL is really going corrupt braindead. Getting psyched for Sunday. Big game and I can get it on Bucs Radio! Go gutsy Bucs, beat the refs and Eaglets!!

  20. #99 the big fella Says:

Aquaass, Boy you really came at me hard with that comeback.. That must of taken you a while to think of that one.

  21. David Says:

He definitely did better last week. Quite honestly, he did just as well at RT as Barton did at LT.
It is why Barton needs to go back to center and Brederson to LG and Tristan at LT. Get it back to normal as much as possible. Most the penalties and bad plays were the guards.

  22. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bucs won a game with Heck, Calvin Klein, and Merle Haggard starting. PAY CARBERRY WHATEVER HE WANTS.

  23. Aqualung Says:

Try counting down from 5 next time, special one. With practice you might pull it off! And if you gragitate to the secund graid, maybe yu can make it all the way frm 10!

  24. Funderstruck Says:

Joes—c’mon—just freaking proofread. “The assessment of Heck being a better right tackle Joe laugh.“ Are we cavemen?!?!

You call yourself a journalist—have some freaking pride in the industry, for as much as you decry what’s become of it.

Go off on “Bland Patrick” all you want; he at least communicates in complete sentences, usually using verbs to bridge subject and predicate, even.

  25. garro Says:

Heck is not an All Pro candidate. He does battle hard to his credit. How much help is he getting with RB chips and TEs? We did not have a single TE target Sunday. I did not pay alotof attention to that so I’m not sure.

    Go Bucs!
