Different Kind Of “Amazing” Bucs Comeback

September 24th, 2025

On Sunday, the Bucs had 10 penalties in the first half.

Ugly football. Even if there were a few bad calls, that’s way too many flags for a half.

Most were attributed to the Buccaneers shaky and inexperienced offensive line.

The Bucs’ head coach elaborated on The Todd Bowles Show (Joe listens on SiriusXM). Despite 40-plus years of coaching and playing, this was a new experience for Bowles.

“So the penalties in the first half were unbelievable,” Bowles said.  The two defensive penalties led to a field goal and we had seven offensive holding penalties — five of them within the first 13 plays of the ball game. That is pretty hard to move the football consistently that way. I have not been around anything like that. We’ve definitely gotta get a better handle on that from a penalty standpoint and you know, it’s amazing that we did win because they did keep their focus.”

“…. Once you get two [penalties] in a row, it becomes a real problem. Like you’re worried about like, ‘What the heck are we doing? We gotta calm this thing down.’ So then you come with a more conservative game plan.”

Joe agrees that Sunday’s bounceback from the offensive line was stunning. They pulled competence out of a pile of ineptitude. And they were strong in key moments on the game-winning drive.

Joe expects a lot more normalcy with Tristan Wirfs returning this week and more offensive linemen in their familiar positions. But Joe has learned that expecting the expected with the 2025 Bucs can make you look silly.

wise old joe preaching truth. line could still be bad this week.

  2. gbobucsfan Says:

Is wirfs a go this week?

  3. Allen Lofton Says:

If Tristan Wirtz returns to the lineup than the Bucs have a chance of winning because he will bring normalcy to the left side of the offensive line and give the Bucs an extra half second to find the open receiver.

  4. Buckylove Says:

Holding penalties at that rate means your offensive line is getting beaten. No surprise there. Fortunately they had somewhat of a recovery.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

philly can be beat with the same oline we had out there sunday imo…

yes the DTs are beastly but their edge players are all about speed….

run right off the tackle early and often and get the DTs moving side to side…they will wear down in this heat….philly hasnt played a game in 85 degrees heat or hotter yet!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  6. D-Rok Says:

Whichever coach made an on-the-fly adjustment to change the game plan and types of plays being run did a great job.

Instead of waiting for halftime then making adjustments, which we’ve seen before. Hats off to the coaches involved – which directly correlated to a win. Consider me impressed.

    Great job, Coaches!

813bucboi … ‘yes the DTs are beastly but their edge players are all about speed’.

It’s interesting to me that after 3 games, Philly only has 3 sacks (2 of those from their DTs). But they do have 22 ‘Pressures’ to go with that, and most of those are coming from the DT/DEs (12) & their OLBs (6). Our OLine will have its hands full me thinks handling DTs Jordan Davis (6’6″ & 336 lbs) & Jalen Carter (6’3″ & 314 lbs). That’s a lot of quality beef.

Of course the same could be said for our defense. We’ve now got 8 sacks (most of those from our LBs & Secondary actually), plus 23 ‘Pressures’ to go with that (over half of those from our LBs & Secondary). Our DLine isn’t providing a whopping pass rush, but they are stifling the run quite effectively, and against the Eagles that will be BIG.

This game should have been a blow out Bowles took the foot off the gass by playing prevent defense.

  9. Aqualung Says:

    Right on, Oneil.

That was the “amazing” thing, if you can use that word, watching the defense and Magoo’s whatever you call it collapse the game away in 10 minutes (21 points).

    That is some special coaching.

    Whose foot?

  10. orlbucfan Says:

Bowles and every somewhat clued-in Bucs fan know Bowles has to be extremely careful when he talks about the zebs. Jets are beyond pitiful with all the added help they had and still lost. The one thing the Bucs have is they are a TEAM! They did not get mad at all the clueless BS; they got even. With all the injuries added in, that took smarts, faith, and guts to win. Win or lose Sunday, I’m proud to be a fan. Go Bucs!!

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Aqualung, did somebody drop you on your head when you were a baby?

    Kenton’s lover makes appearance.

I guess the foot squashing your sack to go into a high pitched whine about the same old thing. Wirf’s is going to be interesting because he has been out and we don’t know how much practice he’s had to get into “game shape” but if there’s 1 guy I would bet on to do it, it’s Wirfs. Haven’t heard yet about the lineup and maybe won’t until they’re trotted out there. If Godwin comes back let’s give the biggest welcome back heard in these here parts. Whenever he comes back.

  14. Aqualung Says:

The pink pony park parade makes an appearance. So cute! Have a nice brown muffin.

  15. Oneilbuc Says:

Aqualung. His name is Larry Foot I think he’s the special team coach I know he was last year.

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

These refs kept the Jets in the game as well to me .

  17. Aqualung Says:

Refs have been bad all year.In every game I’ve watched. Time to go to full AI technology based refereeing.

  18. Aqualung Says:

Oneil. Footey is the LB coach. Magoo is special “teams.”

  19. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Aqualung is the new Rod Munch. The male cheer leader squad love him so much. Now everybody loves them an Aqualung. Keep up the good work young man(me thinks) They always need someone to be appalled at and you hold the reins. 🤭

  20. Aqualung Says:

    Everybody loves them an Aqualung?

    ROTFLMAO 😂🤣🤪😂🤪😂🤣🤪!!!!!

Let’s see some shut down defense in the 4thQ after 2 quarters of stifling (we know Todd’s always gonna give the 1stQ away for free). Quit the awful, demoralizing turtling and so will I.
