CBS: Baker Mayfield To The Rescue (Again)

September 27th, 2025

Too much for Eagles?

Last month, long-time NFL scribe and CBS insider prickly Pete Prisco predicted the Bucs would have the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

This triggered a Cowboys-loving co-worker but Prisco is a man of conviction. He sticks to his guns. Always.

Injuries to Mike Evans, Luke Goedeke, Calijah Kancey and Cody Mauch? They hurt, Prisco admits. But the Bucs still have Baker Mayfield, and that will be the key tomorrow against the Eagles, Prisco types.

Prisco believes it will be a close game. And Mayfield has shown Prisco to be more of a clutch quarterback this season than Eagles signal-caller Jalen Hurts. Therefore, advantage Bucs.

This game features two of the six 3-0 teams, although the Bucs come in banged up. That will really challenge them in this one. They will be without receiver Mike Evans and others. The Eagles had an impressive comeback against the Rams, but the Bucs have had three. They will get another here as they win a close one with a late Baker Mayfield drive.

Pick: Buccaneers 28, Eagles 27

The key to Joe is stopping Hurts’ passing. Joe thinks it is a wise observation that after Philadelphia has struggled so much with Todd Bowles’ defense that they may try a new tactic. Instead of pounding the ball, try throwing.

If somehow the Bucs’ pass defense can rise up, the Bucs could pull off another thrilling win. This time, a monster win.

  1. Aqualung Says:

If that happens, Auqualing’s ticker may not be able to handle it.

Either the Bucs are down multiple scores and Baker pulls a Brady or Todd’s foot still has gout and we blow another lead late, requiring Bakerman. Without Mike, neither scenario seems realistic.

  2. Joseph C Simmons Says:

One thing about Hurts is that–ironically, since he’s an excellent athlete–he’s not great at throwing on the run. If there is a dump off nearby or a WR that came back to his QB sure, he can hit it. Anything else, he’s pretty inaccurate.

It’s dangerous to lose contain on him as he’s such a good runner, but forcing him to throw on the run, especially running left, seems to really negate big plays. IF you contain him.

  3. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

We should switch things up too and try throwing in early downs to setup our run game. (Like we did last year with much success)

  4. Neal Cooter Says:

The Cooter family is very important family in Tampa and we have inside information that Teddy “2 Gloves” will be starting on Sunday and according to insiders at One Buc if he plays well he keeps the job and Baker is being traded to Cincinatti

  5. John Sinclear Says:

–The key to Joe is stopping Hurts’ passing.–

Hurts also runs – fast and well. Wise to take note.

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

I could see our offense struggling to put points up for the 4th straight game, hopefully there are no special teams gaffs and offensively we can score > 7 points this week.

Says we’re 12th averaging 24 ppg, but you subtract the defensive score and it’s really 21.6 a game. Which would make us 18th in scoring league wide.

Defense may have to score to win this one as well.

  7. Kidfloflo Says:

Yo Cooter Brown, how much money u got to bet on that asinine prediction?$

  8. #99 the big fella Says:

Cooter the name says it all.

  9. PSL Bob Says:

Cooter, my family is also well connected, and the inside scoop is that the Cooters are a low-class criminal enterprise, although I would never say that in public. That Neal guy is particularly loathsome.

  10. Saskbucs Says:

Interior OL vs Carter and Davis is gonna be a huge factor in this one. Eagles aren’t generating as much pressure from the edge this year, no Sweat or Smith.

Very much looking forward to this one. Go Bucs!

  11. infomeplease Says:

This is a very tough but winnable game!! NEXT MAN UP!! The team that executes the best in the red zone will win! I believe if the Bucs can control the clock and score TDs the can pull off an upset!! Get it done!!!

  12. infomeplease Says:

This will be a very hard fought game!! The Defense needs to rise up to the challenge!! If the Bucs O can control the clock, keep the Eagles O off the field, and dig a bit deeper into their playbook, the Bucs can walk away with an upset!! The team that executes the best in the Red Zone will win!! LFG!! Get it done!!

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

Special Teams will be the thing..

The punter needs to be a lot better than he has been, among many other things..

  14. CyberDilemma Says:

Unfortunately, Grizzard’s offense looks more like Dave Canales’ than Liam Coen’s to date. Bucs may have a hard time keeping up. When you QB is accounting for 30% of your team’s rushing yards and he is not considered a dual-threat QB, bad things will probably happen to him at some point.

  15. Razorramone Says:

    Not considered a duel threat?

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

The Bucs defensive backfield is light years better than last year!

Add the new youth, two great draft picks following recent drafts that produce Tykee. But MOST important is the return of AW JR. He’s playing healthy for the first time in over a year.

Hassan will be motivated, YaYa continues to improve, Vita is off to a great start the DL is looking better this season as well.

That leaves the big question at LB. LVD obviously is solid but SVD will get tested this week and we have to keep our fingers crossed. I haven’t totally written him off but tomorrow gives SVD a great opportunity to repair his rep.

  17. toopanca Says:

    stpetebucsfan nailed it!

Philly has this year’s other hot rookie – ILB Jihaad Campbell. He has been a beast in coverage, blitzing and outside run defense. The OL needs to run right at him which is not his superpower. On the ground, in the heat, the Bucs should use Smash Mouth, Pony Packages, Razzle Dazzle shifts and sweeps/fake sweeps to set up surprise passes and make it a long, hot, miserable day for the Philly DL.

To defend the middle of the field and contain Jalen Hurts, the Bucs are going to have to gamble and bring safeties down into the middle of the field to cover for SVD. Anytime the Bucs aren’t in Nickle except Tush Push plays, I would be tempted to put Parrish in for Dennis. IIRC, Parrish actually played 5 to 10% of his snaps in college in a role like that .

  18. Aqualung Says:

Do the pink pony party like to be cuddled or tickled more?

  19. Davyboy Says:

That Cooter family don’t have any idea about what is going on at One Buc Place. Wild horses couldn’t keep Baker from starting tomorrow. Of course Cooter is just messing with everyone to get us riled up but we don’t need help getting riled up for this game tomorrow!!!🏴‍☠️

  20. orlbucfan Says:

What planet is this Cooter from? Is that the same thing as having Cooties? Feisty Bake will be playing in this one. Are you kidding?? He’s on a mission. Put a spy on Hurts. And please, DO NOT START THE GAME BY RUNNING UP THE MIDDLE ON FIRST DOWN!!!!!! Go Cardiac Bucs!! Glad I have low BP.
