Baker Mayfield On Josh Grizzard’s Transition To Offensive Coordinator

September 4th, 2025

“You’re doing great, ‘Griz.'”

Last year Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield grew tight with Josh Grizzard. He should have. You want your franchise quarterback to be close with his passing game coordinator.

Mayfield was impressed so much he lobbied the Bucs to promote Grizzard to offensive coordinator this spring after then-Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen left for Jacksonville.

So far, Mayfield believes Grizzard’s transition has been smooth.

“I think he’s handled it great,” Mayfield said. “From listening on the sideline in the preseason games to the communication, and also being able to communicate with him when I’m not playing in the preseason – just what he’s thinking as the game flows and what we would try and set up.

“I think he’s handled it really well. The offense as a whole has been locked in. He was a little bit more behind the scenes last year, so he had a different relationship with guys being able to joke around with them. He’s still able to do [that], but now when he’s up there on stage installing, everybody’s locked in because he’s really focused on the details. Guys pay attention when he’s speaking.”

That shows that players respect Grizzard if they aren’t farting around while he is trying to get real work done. It also shows the Bucs are disciplined and professional in their work.

It’s usually a good thing when the franchise quarterback likes his play-caller. Hopefully, that shows on the scoreboard.

Oh, and as far as Mayfield not throwing a pass in a worthless preseason game this summer, Mayfield said of sitting out all three worthless preseason games, “I’ll be all right.”

The tone is usually set by the QB. This team is blessed to have Wirfs, Evans and Godwin, in addition to Baker.

    Great players, great leaders.

  2. Truth be Told Says:

when you have a STUD Franchise QB it makes the Transition a lot easier. This team is loaded on Offense. Now about that Putrid Pass Defense….

  3. Boomer Says:

    I like everything about this.
I think Baker and the offense understand that they left points on the field and lost games that were well within reach.

  4. Bucman Says:

Only concern how smooth the flow is in game 1 against ALT. Guess we will find out Sunday.

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

“worthless preseason games”. Nope – it’s a beautiful cool morning here in the mid Atlantic. It’s my 40th anniversary and my Polynesian wife is still smokin. I will not take the cheese. Now let’s go beat Atlanta!

  8. Aqualung Says:

Aqualung wonders what the defensive players do during install? Eyes glaze over, jaws drop open, drool puddles form on the workspace?

Football players should not be required to attend lectures on designing a nuclear fusion power plant.

  15. Lt. Dan Says:

Awesome Mr. Green! I was HPD back in the day. I worked the UH games in an OT capacity. Saw Marshall Faulk light up the Warriors a couple of times.

  16. Dave Smith Says:

“Grizz” played football at Yale with the Abare twins (Bobby & Larry). They both speak very highly of him as does Baker Mayfield. Both will lead the Bucs to the Super Bowl.

  17. Kenton Smith Says:

Lt. Dan, congratulations!! Now that you’re in the 4th quarter with your beautiful wife (shlt for brains will do when you’ve got luck) go out there and finish strong!! It’s the best quarter of a football game and life. Leave it all out on the field!!

  18. New Fan Land Says:

This is the most positive comment thread on jbf I’ve seen, and as a Cleveland transplant, it makes me nervous. I do think they’re ready to throw up those points. Baker is going to take it out of the defense hands if he can.
