Baker Mayfield Addresses Kyle Trask Departure

September 3rd, 2025

“Kyle, man, I’ll be thinking of you. Todd just didn’t trust you enough.”

Baker Mayfield spent two years with Kyle Trask as his backup quarterback.

Trask was cut last week.

The 2021 Bucs second-round pick has no team.

Joe asked Mayfield for his thoughts on Trask this afternoon.

“It’s unfortunately the nature of the business, which stinks,” Mayfield replied. “Got close with Kyle; I love Kyle. I thought he grew a ton just from the time I got here. Obviously he’s not here anymore, but wish him the best. You never know. This is a crazy business. You never know where you can end up and sometimes, as I know from personal experience, you just need a fresh start.”

And so it goes. Trask is gone but not forgotten.

    BAD OPTICS
Outside of Joe articles, I doubt we hear from Trask again. Unlike Mike Glennon, Trask has no starting experience and he couldn’t warrant a backup position after 5 years. PFF even had him as the 32nd ranked 2nd string QB.

He got paid millions to have the best seat at 4 seasons of Bucs games. Good for him!

  4. 813bucboi Says:

Americas QB didnt get this many article after his departure lol…
we get it joe…you’re an FSU fan…
    GO BUCS!!!!

  5. Beeej Says:

It doesn’t look good that neither the Raiders nor jaguars nor Carolina Panthers signed him. At least he has enough time in to get his pension

  6. Pewter Pirate Says:

I personally liked Kyle, but I am ready to move on. Ready for this 2025 team to win the Super Bowl and not worry about who is the backup QB.

  7. ocala Says:

In news Bucs fans care about Tristan Wirfs was seen jogging at Bucs practice today.

  8. First Last Says:

Joe, in his memory you should have a trask post after every loss about Trask’s 11 passing attempts

  9. Kenton Smith Says:

Hmm. Wonder if Baker played any part in that decision? He “loves” Kyle but he seems to not want to give anyone else a chance. Maybe he hoodwinked old Kyle and helped run him out of town. Diabolical. That oughta give some of you Traskies (conspiracy theorists) something to ponder.

    1. Trask may be gone but he still generates eyeballs. I dont even know tge name of the guy tgey kept. Joe needs the money.
    2. One of these days trask will fet a chance. Baker not getting hurt was unexpected.
    3. The new backup qb must be better against tge oass rush for training purposes, no way is he comparable to trask otherwise
    4. Any team that takes trask will have to have a new concept.of pass downfield. That’s a big ask when tens of millions are spent on a different way. Ask tebow. Success didnt even matter and now every qb runs some unlike 15 years ago.
    5. Things will change back to trasks style of play. Deep ball is too entertaining, this Jaden Daniel’s stuff isn’t fun to watch imo.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    LOL!

Please find a new hobby Joe…

I love you guys but – come on man!

  12. Pops Malone Says:

I can’t pay attention to Trask. I am too busy trying to exchange my #9 Ebuka jersey for a #2 Ebuka jersey. Why didn’t you save me the aggravation and just give up #2 when Ebuka got here Kyle???

  13. Hodad Says:

Like beating a dead horse. Watched the presser. Was wondering what tool had a Trask question. Should’ve known.
Interesting. So asking the face of the franchise for a comment on a guy he spent every day with for two years is a “tool” question. Ok. Guess Joe was a tool asking for comment when Joe Tryon-Shoyinka walked in free agency, too. –Joe

    Trask who?

  15. HC Grover Says:

What is a Trask and who cares? He B Gone.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Hey Joe how bout a Bilgewater post? It will be relevant.

  17. RagingBrisket Says:

    Who?

  18. BillMFl Says:

Some very cheap shots on here. A lot of pretty good players don’t make it big in the NFL. Very few even get drafted. Just making the roster in the NFL is an honor. I played a lot of sports in my younger years and there is no shame in being a backup in the NFL. I respect any player who makes it to the bigs. Only a relatively few get there. My guess is most of the gripers on here never played at a high level in any sport. I played at the national level in my sport and I respect anybody at any level, amature or pro , who competed at the national level I find some of the cheap trash talking on here disgusting.

Billmfi did u already post this crap last time u posted

  20. Oneilbuc Says:

The only thing happened to Trask is politics again Bowles has shown us how he operates. If he likes a player they’re going to start regardless if they’re good or bad . Trask out played Baker in training camp in 2023 and we all know it that’s why people talks bad about him because they know the truth. Even the Joe’s know Trask was better that year. But Trask is gone and now I’m waiting for the Joe’s to talk about Baker Mayfield getting us to the Superbowl and they refuse to bring that up on this site. Lol 🤣🤣 and the no defense excuse ain’t going to work in the playoffs or less what happened in Houston happens in the playoffs. Other than that I don’t want to hear it’s the defense fault when the game is put in Baker hands to either or close it out.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

And by the way about the Bowles comment just look at Jamle Dean he’s trash he gets burned every game 3 and 4 times a game before he fakes a injuryed.

  22. CJBucsFan Says:

The 9 will end up being more rare! Maybe even collectible one day when he hopefully is a hall of fame and has numbers that almost match Mike’s

  23. Don'tBmad Says:

Trask fans were super casuals and tiresome….good riddance hope they go with him

  24. Aqualung Says:

Personally, I prefer more articles about the predictably failed ex-Gator QB. And now we get to read more from Oneil about the conspiracy. Which is validated, because all of Trask’s ex coaches and mates who are in positions to hire him were falling all over themselves to – wait, what? He’s not signed?

Canales took a Hooker over Trashk? Spytec took Driskel over Trashk? Crickets from Liam? So they’re all in it together! Pay Trask millions to not play. Almost as genius as a Todd Bowles pass defense.

  25. Knothead71 Says:

    @813Bucboi
    I’m genuinely curious.
Do you click on JBF.com regularly? Are you truly a Bucs fan?
The Joes posted MULTIPLE articles about Winston after he was no longer a Buc.
Also, Winston played his college ball at FSU; Trask played at UF.
If the Joes where solid FSU fans (as you assert) wouldn’t it be safe to say they would downplay Trask and promote Winston?
In your day job do you collect money under bridges?

  26. Shane Callahan Says:

Yeah, the classy folks here have always wished Trask the very best in case Baker got hurt while privately knowing, like all the players and coaches, that the Bucs would be doomed if Baker got injured. There’s no comparison between the two. I do wish Trask gets another chance. I feel bad for him. He had to back up the GOAT then Mayfield the greatest college QB since 2000 according SI. That’s unfair. Well, at least Kyle made more money than most of us will make in our lifetimes. Good luck Kyle! Bye bye Traskers (and good riddance.)

  27. Aqualung Says:

Stop feeling bad for a guy who got the biggest gift fathomable. He collected millions holding a clipboard and took 5 training camps and 4 seasons to prove to the whole league that he is not NFL caliber. At least he won’t be publicly humiliated like Glennon was, repeatedly. Feel good for Kyle. Maybe he’ll go back to college and finish his Associates Degree in Athletic Anthropology.

  28. callingoutthelies Says:

Baker is great. No excuses for this season. I agree with Oneilbuc good honest post.Good luck Kyle

  29. Pops Malone Says:

Hey CJBucs Fan….saw your comment!! I have actually thought about that!

  30. The Big Sombreo Says:

    LOL!

I saw the article with Mayfield’s quote…. came here to comment and suggest Joe write an article about that quote…. great job Joe! I should have never doubted you!

    #Baker_took_out_the_Trash(k)!
