Why People Don’t Want To Leave The Bucs

August 31st, 2025

Details end of his Bucs days.

We all know the Bucs aren’t big players in the free agent market. Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht would rather keep his homegrown talent.

For example, some 82 percent of current Bucs roster are players Licht drafted. Well, except one. That was a player drafted by former Bucs rock star general manager, Mark Dominik.

(That player would be Lavonte David.)

Earlier this year, passing game coordinator Kefense Hynson said in a press conference that when he came to the Bucs, one of the first things he noticed was that people didn’t want to leave. On first glance, that could be because it is Tampa. Florida’s growing like a weed in the summer, you may have noticed. Everyone, it seems, wants to live in Florida.

But it is not just that. The Bucs, apparently, treat people right. Nothing like having a job in Florida where bosses treat you well and respect your efforts.

Former Bucs running back Chase Edmonds is doing a lot of press lately. It seems he wants a media gig. He should get one. He’s very well spoken and sharp.

Co-hosting “Good Morning Football,” seen weekday mornings on NFL Network, Edwards was quite good. Edmonds also had an appearance on Ross Tucker’s podcast. The former NFL offensive lineman may have the best series of pure football podcasts out there.

Edmonds told Tucker he blew out a knee in the middle of Bucs training camp last season. Edmonds admitted the Bucs could have easily cut him with an injury settlement. Intead, they kept him around on the injured reserve list so he could pocket his salary, in part, because Edmonds said the Bucs liked how he worked with young running backs.

Edmonds twice referred to the Bucs as a “class organization.”

In a league where there are more than one or two owners who look in every crevice to save a nickel, trust Joe, how the Bucs worked with Edmonds is the type of gesture that gets spread around the fraternity of NFL players quickly.

Joe is confident Edmonds’ story, and others’, lets players know the Bucs are a desirable destination.

The lack of an income tax in Florida may have an impact as well.

  2. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

Why are the Bucs continuously getting low scores every year when the player grades come out for the team?

  3. Obvious One Says:

Hey Trey, That’s a great question. Though I’m not sure the two are directly in step with one another and might be apples and oranges. But then maybe not?..

Bucs get no respect, good. We keep up the trajectory we’re on right now with Jason Licht we will soon be mentioned with the elites of the nfl. This is a top notch origination (man it feels good to say that!). The underrated factor will fuel these guys to push to the top.

So do the Chiefs. Really killing their ability to bring guys in and win, isn’t it?

    @Trey

The NFL PA grades first came out I think in 2024.

The Bucs were F in two categories.

    1. was how families were treated. The next year in 2025 the grade was C minus. What changed — The Buccaneers provide daycare during home games and stopped charging $90 per child this year. However, they are still one of 10 teams that do not offer a family room during home game

    2. was travel. The next year in 2025 the grade was C minus as well. But only 65% of the Buccaneers players believe they have a comfortable amount of personal space on team flights.

To me, it seems like the peripheral stuff that the NFL PA talks about matters some — but it is not nearly as important as the player’s perception that their efforts are being respected.

It’s ok to have Homegrown talent on your roster. But Jason Licht need to add more veterans, via free agency, trades. We won both Super Bowls with a mixture of homegrown players, and free agents.

    We’ll see how it workout

  8. ballwasher61 Says:

Geno711 I read that too. With the money the players make charging daycare is a drop in the bucket but kudo’s to the Bucs for changing that. Big guys in a little seat…….Tommy Boy, LOL..

I remember one of the announcers talking about Evan’s getting a bonus for hitting the 1000 yd mark and gave credit too for them doing that but I believe that was purely secondary in their minds. And that is caring for your players. Nice to hear good things about the Bucs. They are also leading the way for people to learn coaching, women in football, etc. Now if they would only pass my number to Stacy Dales… LOL

Jack I have a bad feeling too about this season. Not sure we go that low UT can see a 2-3 or 1-4 start to this season for sure. Who knows where we go from there.

What about the new DT – J. Jones ?

  17. Lou. Says:

Two words, one name: Vincent Jackson.

Licht had to overpay his first few years and couldn’t attract the better free agents. He was swift to cancel contracts on malingerers and bad actors like the tree-hugger. Fans could see as Jackson’s talent declined and as Evans soared many fans called him out for underperforming and wanted him cut. Licht never wavered and paid out on the rest of the contract. I believe that upped his rep with agents — not that he’s easy but that he’s reliable.

  18. SenileSenior Says:

Yeah, Mons Venus is the major draw. 🙂

  19. Jack Says:

Anyone remember the Mons second location in Brandon? Much smaller but kinda down low so no one would recognize you 🤣

  20. toopanca Says:

About the $90 per child daycare, consider an UNFA on the practice squad with no guaranteed money who gets called up to the 53 man roster for one home game.

$13 K per week practice squad pay is pretty nice – for 18 weeks – $234 K per year – unless you get cut to make room for an injury signing at another position, and then it is $0 unless you get resigned or sign somewhere else in which case you have to spend to relocate and you are stuck with your apartment lease and you are just back in the same situation where you could be cut again. You better be counting pennies and living small.

If you get called up for a game, you are one injury or one bad game away from the end of your NFL career and you have to pay $90 per kid for child care and there is not even a family room for your spouse – ouch!

Now, getting called up to the 53 man roster for that game jumps you up to just over $40 K for that one week. But, you may be cut the next week and back to $0 again, so don’t celebrate by spending big, and yes you will begrudge $90 per kid for daycare.

geno711 , I seem to recall locker room cleanliness was a huge issue on the grades as well…players actually felt it was a heath hazard.

Since Redner sold Mons it’s gone downhill…the girls not so hot as they used to be.

  25. garro Says:

Not bad for a team that has lousy facility, lousy food, does nothing for the players wives LOL. That stuff really ticks me off.

Bottom line is we keep our guys happy and Tampa has always been a great place to live.

    Go Bucs!

  26. Obvious Says:

The state has low crime and a phenomenal business climate.

The franchise has great owners, a gm and coach that treat ppl the right way. That’s a great environment.

But, Todd needs to leverage that skill (and it is a great skill) into a 12 win, playoff run.
