“We’re Not Worried About It”

Downplays Baker Mayfield’s injury.

This morning Bucs fans got a jolt. And it wasn’t from their local coffee shop or from a cup of burnt coffee from a Seattle outfit.

As practice began, news broke from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that Baker Mayfield has a hand contusion on his throwing hand and would miss practice. His return, per Pelissero, was “day-to-day.”

After practice, Bucs coach Todd Bowles sounded as if Mayfield needed a day off more than he needed to heal. Bowles seemed to think Mayfield’s injury is trivial.

“He’s got a sore hand,” Bowles said. “We gave him the day off. He’s day-to-day. We’re not worried about it.”

Bowles then added Mayfield’s injury wasn’t just one incident but a series of impacts.

“Sore over the past few days,” Bowles said. “It’s been an accumulation of days and we just thought we would give him a day off.”

Mayfield’s injury left the Bucs with just two healthy quarterbacks. Third-string Michael Pratt has yet to practice this camp as he is on the PUP list.

As a result, Kyle Trask was the quarterback running the first team offense.

“Probably the best he’s looked since we’ve been in camp,” Bowles said. “He made quicker decisions and got the ball out of his hand.”

After watching a Mayfield-less practice, Joe doesn’t know who Bucs fans should pray for at night, Mayfield’s health or the health of the first team offensive line.

Hand contusion? I thought he was married.

  2. Aqualung Says:

Signing a FA QB might not be a bad idea.

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Hand confusion? It can be difficult to tell left from right sometimes.

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

Now it’s time for Trask to show what he got

He’s working with the first team

  5. JimBobBuc Says:

Trask struggled today against the first team defense with about 5 straight incompletions. He was indecisive with late throws. However he tore up the second and third team defense.

  6. Hodad Says:

Bucs should’ve cut bait with Pratt when he couldn’t suit up for training camp, and brought another QB in. We’re already two weeks into camp, and are razor thin there. Why we wasting time? What if Trask tweaks something? We got to get through 3 preseason games still.

Go sign Gus Swayze as insurance

  8. SlyPirate Says:

Last year Bowles instituted a 3 day training schedule. He moved away from a 4 day schedule because most injuries occured on the 4th straight day.

I thought this was brilliant. We didn’t see the hamstring injuries like years past.

Joe, do you know if they are continuing with that regiment?

    brilliant!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  10. Jeff Says:

This could be way more serious than the Bucs are leading on. See Chris Godwin as a prime example of an injured player that is likely to miss the entire season and the Bucs brass acting like everything is just fine.

  11. Woodman Says:

Likely to miss the entire season? Why always so negative Jeff ? Why do you come here to constantly bash Bucs something ain’t right with you.

  12. larrd Says:

    I hear they might amputate.

Finally someone else says it out loud. Staryucks is awful, which is why everyone orders it with a 5 pund bag of sugar poured in itogether wth a quart of heavy cream. Hard pass.

I noticed Bowles said Baker’s injury has been there several days. I wonder / hope that accounts for the meh performance in practice?

  14. Irishmist Says:

Yet another reason OL and DL should be wearing guardian caps during training camp. Not only do they protect their heads, they protect the QBs hand if he hits it against a helmet.

    oh shut up

  16. Joe Says:

Joe, do you know if they are continuing with that regiment?

    Yes, thankfully.

  17. Scotty Mack Says:

Yeah, Jeff, you decide to pay a play more than $20 million, knowing they won’t be able to play this season. Good grief!
