Todd Bowles Said Baker Mayfield Will Return Next Week
August 2nd, 2025
Return determined.
Yesterday, Bucs coach Todd Bowles told NFL Network that Baker Mayfield may miss a day after he sat out Friday’s practice. With the local pen and mic club yesterday, Bowles pooh-poohed Mayfield’s injury as basically nothing.
Bowles also told NFL Network Mayfield banged his hand on someone’s shoulder pads on a follow-through on a throw.
After practice today at One Buc Palace, one that Mayfield also missed, Bowles said Mayfield will return to practice next week. Bowles was no more specific than that.
The Bucs have Sunday and Monday off and will next return to the practice field on Tuesday. The Bucs have a joint practice with the Titans on Thursday with a worthless preseason game Saturday night.

They’re not worthless if you’re fighting for a spot on the roster or competing for a starting gig.

Finally we get to see what we have in Kyle Trask. LOL.

WR Dennis Houston has taken advantage of the injuries at WR
He looks like a man on a mission, he’s really showcasing his talents

Better safe than sorry. Hopefully four days off and high level PT will do it. Hitting a shoulder pad is probably better than a helmet.

He is not interested in watching our new draft picks. SMH
LFG!!!!!

I have heard ( and the postings seem to verify it) that yesterday’s practice was the best the offense has looked., no fumbles , no interceptions, passing and running game clicking, it will be interesting to see what effect a little competition will have on Mayfield’s performance , fewer fumbles and interceptions would be a good thing.

Not worthless to guys like JJ Roberts. I’ve been to a couple practices and he seems invisible. I hope he shows up big against the Titans. Yesterday, Trask really struggled in the red zone. In the preseason, he needs to play well against the 2s and 3s of the other team or Jason may go look for an experienced backup.

@Jdstill There is no competition – not even a little. You are fine with “postings” when you think they suit Trask but go bezerk when Joes who sees Kyle much more than you do says he is consistently inconsistent.

I hope Bakie still has a job when he comes back, im really worried. I hear its going to be really close. Running a top three offense I guess isn’t all that hard after all, anyone can do it. I guess Kyle could be doing it this fall, heck maybe he can have a #1 or #2 ranked offense instead of a trashy #3 offense. its really not that hard the way it sounds from folks on this site, apparently you just have to concentrate real hard. Poor Bakie really might have lost his job huh? Either way I guess its going to be really hard for Bowles to decide. Good luck coach. Thanks for giving us a heads up guys, now we know.

MikeBuc. The Joe’s ain’t that trustworthy when it comes to Trask or Baker Mayfield. So I really don’t know who to believe I’ve heard on other bucs sites saying Baker has been throwing picks left and right and they are also out there in training camp. But Joe haven’t mentioned that yet about Baker Mayfield also throwing pick 6’s in camp. They to down play Trask to promote Baker Mayfield and yes it never was a quarterback competition from the start. Even on the podcast one of the Joe’s said Trask played good and the other one still tried to criticize Trask so again training camp and practices don’t mean nothing anymore. Because if a player like Baker Mayfield who has a fan base from Oklahoma and Cleveland he brings the Glazer boys money he’s going to start even if he throws 50 ints and Trask throws 50 TDs . Just like David and the rest of them. It’s not about the best players playing now days it’s about 90 percent money and 10 percent about winning now days!!

Tell us how you really feel?

You know Oneil, people can say anything. Is it true, who knows. The point is, Baker is going to be the starter for along time. There is no getting around it. He will get better and better with each passing season. You dont have to worry about Baker being good enough to win us a superbowl. When a team of sufficient talent is built around Baker we will get our superbowl if not several.

Can somebody translate what Oneilbuc is saying? I think he isn’t sold on Baker Mayfield even though Jason Licht and Todd Bowles are? Oneilbuc, why don’t you just state that?

I see you guys didn’t comment on any post that said Trask has been good. Baker went 5-15 and Trask was 11-16 and Baker has been throwing picks 6’s as well . Back in the day or with a coach like Pete Carol Baker Mayfield job would be injerbtiy. Now days it’s 90 percent business and 10 percent winning so practice doesn’t matter anymore like it used to. The only thing Davyboy and Gipper care about is Baker Mayfield you guys are not real bucs fans. But to really answer your question if players are garuteed staring positions a lot of times they don’t get better. Competition brings out the best in players regardless of the position. In 2023 Trask was better than Baker Mayfield but Baker knew he was going to be the starter before camp because Bowles said so . Just like IRA source said when Baker had 8 picks to Kyle Trask 1 that Baker was going to be under center week 1 . And even Baker himself said I’m just ready for them to name the starter knowing he was the guy the whole time. But again Baker played good last season even though he lead the league in turnovers. But know ain’t no more excuses for choking in the playoffs again when Dak , Romo and Jackson turned over the ball the same way Baker Mayfield has done in the playoffs they gets blame for the lost. So you have to keep the same mindset with Baker Mayfield. NFC Championship or bust no more excuses!!
