José Ramirez Question Arises
August 2nd, 2025Could a third-year Bucs edge rusher be struggling with the playbook?
It happens.
Yesterday, Todd Bowles was asked about the training camp performance of bottom-of-the-roster edge rusher José Ramirez. He’s been a Bucs preseason warrior in past years and team officials have talked about how Ramirez is often a beast in practice giving Tristan Wirfs fits. Wirfs has acknoweldged it himself, as well.
Meanwhile, Ramirez only got 30 snaps last year on defense while the Bucs were hurting for pass-rush help. Odd.
Bowles gave an interesting answer. “We know he’s a good pass rusher. We just want to see him hold up against the run and understand the scheme a little better.”
So maybe now there’s finally clarity on what’s been keeping Ramirez invisible. He’s not grasping what he needs to in order to see the field.
This reminds Joe of former Bucs inside linebacker Vi Jones. He was on the team in 2023 and Bowles, in October of 2024, was talking about how Jones was talented in pass coverage but wasn’t “up to speed” yet. What?
Joe expects another strong preseason from Ramirez.

It reminds me of Desmond Watson. One person is so uncommitted, he’d prefer stuffing his face vs. having a football career. The other is too lazy to study and a playbook he’s had for years.

Wow it still makes no sense Todd. Great coache teach. Do he and Watts have learning disablities? Diaby does not? Brand new Reddick? Hmm…
Go Bucs!

after 3 years, if you don’t know the playbook, demote to waterboy…let adam sandler coach you up on keeping heads hydrated

Every season we go into camp hyping a handful of young guys. When the lights come on they’re on the bench or in street clothes and inactive. My take is they don’t have the talent to start or play meaningful reps, but they are players we have modeled our roster around doing salary cap numbers.

i think it was last year that he beasted the F out, and had like 3 sacks in a single preseason game

Another example of Todd’s scheme is too complex for many to grasp. Use Ramirez as a bloody pass rusher, and since teams pass 2x as often as they run against Todd, dude’s snap count would increase and production would increase.
No wonder our edge rush has been so bad. Todd wants to make everyone into a Mensa theoretical physics PhD instead of letting a skilled pass rusher play to his strength.
Watch the 16 losses over the last two seasons. Unless you value your mental health.

Front… no idea what you mean by “but they are players we have modeled our roster around doing salary cap numbers.” ???
We have stars, starters and bench warmers. Some of these bench warmers are there for lack of experience, being young, some it’s the development process for them and others it’s lack of talent or physical traits. It’s a case by case basis.
Ramirez lucked out with the bad luck of David Walker. Buys him more time to make something happen. Better get that play book down… clock is ticking.
Remember, Barber, a hall of famer took a while to start as well.

If he doesn’t get it by now find someone who does. Bucs waste to much time on players who can’t suit up, see Pratt, or are just not capable of learning the play book. They are also way to slow replacing said players. Baker is sore, we’re down to 2 QBs. Pratt hasn’t taken to the field in the four months since the offseason began. We’re going into the 3rd week of camp, and they haven’t brought in another QB yet. God forbid Trask gets hurt first preseason game, than what? Bring someone in already, and send china doll Pratt packing.

Did JTS have problems with the playbook? Apparently not since he played most of the time. Maybe the playbook is not that good.
Edge rushers should rush! Is that in the playbook?
August 2nd, 2025 at 11:06 am
Inexcusable please cut him we need players who work hard all offseason learning the scheme.

Odd to play unproductive players because they grasp the complexity of the playbook, yet waste talented productive players due to lack of understanding and overly complex playbook. Seems there should be extra effort to help those who produce with limited opportunities vs wasting so many snaps on nonproductive guys like JTS

There’s a spot open now for either Watts or Ramirez to grab…. Hope 1 of them steps up big time and makes it an easy choice….

earnest graham was a preseason wonder until they finally put hin in the game due to injury and failure of all the high potential big money guys first.
so if he plays its bad news/ good news. bad that the “potential” people did not deliver, good that we finally get to know, and i think hes going to do well if given the chance, which may be after reddick leaves

@Front Four – I’m sorry, but you made ZERO sense. Are you answering your own questions or what exactly ?

All you fake fans keep blasting the play book ? Funny how Diaby is doing good with it, as are newcomer Reddick . Chris Braswell has made huge slides since his rookie season last year. When Todd had JPP, Suh , and Sack Barrett, they were one of the best Dlines in the NFL. We have just won a Super Bowl and 4 division titles, soon to be a 5th, and you all love to find something to complain about. This fanbase is embarrassing sometimes. You know who you are. The same ones who sell their season tickets to opposing teams fans. Go Bucs and real Bucs fans
