Jason Licht: Chris Godwin, Tristan Wirfs “Hitting Their Milestones”
August 10th, 2025The Bucs have a lot of money invested into Chris Godwin, the future Buccaneers Ring of Honor receiver, and All-World left tackle Tristan Wirfs, another man destined for the Ring.
Neither guy has practiced in training camp, or been seen by media doing anything other than smiling and supporting teammates, and the Bucs have shied away from providing clarity about their injuries, surgeries and expected return dates.
However, upbeat and encouraging words were flowing last night from Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht. He told the Buccaneers Radio Network that Godwin and Wirfs are “hitting their milestones,” as it relates to recovery, and the team medical staff is very pleased.
Joe will take it.
Recently, Licht said publicly that Godwin could be seen working on grass with team training staff prior to Wirfs. While that may seem trivial, it’s nearly always a major step toward a player returning to to practice.

It’s very likely that one/both player(s) will ‘miraculously’ become available on opening day. Neither really needs preseason work (or the danger that comes with it). The last week of training camp will have them ready.

Think we need Wirfs back the most on opening day, but hoping both can play.

Good news. That’s why there are preseason games and backup players.

Most likely light running on the treadmill that is on the floor of a rehab pool that is chest deep with water…..

thinking Godwin ends up on the PUP list and misses the first month as there is no need to rush him back
Wirfs is back in week 3 against the Jets, playing it safe to give him a couple extra weeks of recovery and practice time
We need both healthy in December for the playoff run

Never thought I’d say this as a Bucs fan growing up, but we need to plan for January availability more than September availability

Ease’em back in, we can still win football games with both missing limited time. We know they’ll be back, in the mean time keep prepping their replacements to stay as good as we can without either.
It’d be nice to be relatively healthy or even better, getting healthier going into our bye. A scenario like that would bode well for us should we be in the postseason hunt.

The Bucs medical staff are 32 out of 32 in the league.

this the same staff that left white in after he was hurt and then put miller back out after he got hit in the head?

“It’s very likely that one/both player(s) will ‘miraculously’ become available on opening day.”
I got to disagree with this statement.
I would say that is very likely that both players will not be available for any September game.

None of us knows when either player will see the field again. None of us really know whose “fault” it may be if blame is to be assigned. Along with other injuries occurring in camp I feel that the injury bug has bitten the Bucss already. We are going to need guys to step up in our first game with Atlanta. It may be four or five games before we see all of our starters play.

The Bucs coaches are guessing as much as us fans
The medical staff is clueless about these injuries
Remember Big Carl Nicks, the best OG in the NFL , at the time
The kept saying he was day to day, with a turf toe
All the time, he had a career ending iinjury

Bucs4Ever: You make an excellent point. I was drunk on my couch and could see that White was clearly in discomfort. So what does this staff of highly paid professionals do? Give White the ball again. Miller gets his “bell rung” and goes into the dreaded Luke Goedeke protocol. What does this staff of highly paid professionals do? Throw him a pass where he breaks over the middle. But wait – there’s more. Lets put EE back as a punt returner. Awesome.

Even IF they think Godwin is ready and good to go for the first game they shouldn’t let him play until week five at the earliest!

Zwak
Interesting thought.
Maybe we should keep him out of games that that the opposing team uses headhunters to balance the talent on the field. (saints, ravens, etc).
That, or isolate those headhunters and don’t let them close enough to take those cheap shots that end careers.

or send a message by hunting the headhunters first.

I’ve always thought Godwin would be more of a midseason return, and it sounds like he’s ahead of that schedule. As always, I’d love to be proven wrong and have him starting day opening day – I think it’s incredibly unlikely, but I’d love to see it. If he doesn’t, then I assume he’s on the PUP list and I think that means he’s out for at least 4 games. Just make sure he’s fully healthy when he comes back – since that will be a huge boost to the offense.
On Wirfs, I’m more concerned since I thought, maybe, perhaps, he might be back ahead of schedule. Still hoping to hear good news on that, but starting to wonder if I was overly optimistic and he ends up being out those first 4 games as well. That would be a huge loss – then again last year Sucke was in that position and the Bucs mostly did OK, and I refuse to believe that Heck is as clueless and worthless as Sucke.

You may be right, Geno711, but if Wirfs is even 90% ready, I doubt if he can be stopped from getting on the field. Especially against the dirty birds. And I would bet that Godwin feels the same. And whether true or not, the Buc’s medical staff is not viewed as keeping players off the field for their own well being.

Bingo! You won’t see either guy in a game until October. I’m convinced of that.
Let’s just hope we’re not 1-3 by then.

And the fact that Godwin is practicing before Wirfs doesn’t mean he will be in playing shape before him. Godwin has been sidelined for months, Wirfs for weeks. Godwin has a lot more physical rehabilitation to do than Wirfs I would think.

The Glazers better find a excuse to fire Jason Licht or every tier of the stadium is going to be filled with names in the Ring of honor!
