Todd Bowles Says Chris Braswell Is “Faster & Leaner”

July 31st, 2025

Chris Braswell (left) with Yaya Diaby.

Then-rookie edge rusher Chris Braswell has a rather invisible 325+ snaps on defense last season.

That has to change and it looks like it will.

No, Joe’s not referencing Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht talking about Braswell shocking a lot of people this season. Joe’s talking about Todd Bowles saying that Braswell is faster and leaner.

“He’s coming off the ball a lot faster than he was last year because he knows what to do and knows how to do it,” Bowles said. “And now he’s just letting his ability take over. He’s worked all year with YaYa [Diaby] and they’ve become very tight. [Braswell’s] work ethic is outstanding and he’s putting it to use.”

Bowles added that drafting edge David Walker, now out for the season, doesn’t put extra pressure on Braswell because he’s a second-year man and needs to step up.

And, to keep pace with Licht, Bowles added that Braswell is “light years better than he was last year.”

Braswell should change his number to 42.

  2. SenileSenior Says:

It is good to read something about Braswell. I hope to be shocked in the right way early in the season. If we can develop an edge rush then look out. I am thinking our meddle is on the mend also. We have the makings of a good defense.

In Bowles I trust. Go Bucs!!

  3. infomeplease Says:

Seeing is believing! I hope he can make an impact this season. We’ll see.

  4. geno711 Says:

Braswell was my least favorite pick last year. Hopefully, I am wrong.

Maybe if he was a 3rd rounder — I would have loved him for value.

But 2nd rounders I hope are clear starters.

  5. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

We go Reddick & Yaya, with Braswell & Nelly rotating in.

It can be done.Giants won their last super bowl partly because Tuck, Umenyiora, & JPP all shared snaps at DE in Spags’ scheme. Those dudes were on-demand pressure

  6. Kgh4life Says:

If he’s leaner, can he hold up against the run? Or push olinemen back with power? We’ll see.

  7. JimBobBuc Says:

In Footy I trust. Last year, George Edwards caused a regression by YaYa and couldn’t free up Braswell either. With Larry Foote this year, he’s freeing up the edges to get off the ball and attack the QB instead of being so run conscious.

  8. 813BUCBOI Says:

    i think he’ll have a good season…im thinking 5.5-6/5 sacks

    GO BUCS!!!!

  9. Aqualung Says:

Excellent. So he will be much better the majority of his snaps, when he’s dropping into coverage to cover grassy knolls.

  10. ballwasher61 Says:

I wonder who covers the RB’s when they come past the LOS for a dump off or screen, could it be……..SATAN, I mean linebackers? Nobody complains when Lavonte drops to do that, why shouldn’t Braswell or any other LB? It isn’t all just rushing the passer, it’s stopping the run too.

  11. SlyPirate Says:

“He’s (playing) a lot faster … because he knows what to do and how to do it,”

    Real rocket science.

Snap ball > Run to ball > Tackle guy holding ball

  12. Famu_Rattler Says:

Bucs Defense new DL scheme is “STOP THE RUN ON THE WAY TO THE QB”. any dump offs to RB is left to the LB’s to handle.

I like it, eat on the way to the QB. Go Bucs. Go Bucs.

  13. Buddha Says:

Sapp had poor first year as well, then took off.

  14. FirstTimePoster Says:

Braswell played under Saban. He’ll be fine. ROLL TIDE!

  15. BucYou Says:

If he can top 7 sacks, this will be Reddick’s only season here. If not, Reddick gets a. 3 year extension.

  16. Todd Bowls Says:

I hope David Walker can learn the playbook, watch a lot of film and get some mental reps so he will at least get some experience in his head while he recovers from his unfortunate injury.

I guess it’s time for the two highly touted practice squad Superhero rush specialists Jose Ramirez and his running buddy, Marqees Watts to fish or cut bait as they battle for the 5th OLB spot unless someone else surprises in camp or the Bucs pick up someone when players are cut ter
