Lavonte David: Defense Has Enough To Win A Super Bowl

July 16th, 2025

Joe already wrote a few nuggets from when legendary Bucs linebacker Lavonte David sat down with another Tampa Bay legend to talk ball and life. But wait, there’s more!

That other local legend is Buccaneers Ring of Honor head coach Jon Gruden, aka Chucky.

Their Barstool Sports sitdown was a highlight of the offseason.

During that chat, Chucky told David the Todd Bowles defense “works” because it’s unorthodox and can do a lot of things. Chucky, however, asked David is he thinks the Bucs have enough talent and depth to get back to the Super Bowl and win it.

“I believe so. I think so. Not I believe so. I know so,” David said. “Me being the leader, me being the oldest guy on the defense, I put it on myself. And I know we got the tools to get ourselves over the hump. The guys are motivated and the guys are going to be ready. I’ll make sure they are.”

David went on to blame the Bucs defense for a chunk of losses last season.

Do the Bucs have enough defensive talent get back to the Super Bowl? Joe could probably answer that in October.

As for the offense, David was beaming with pride when Chucky gushed about their talent and depth. “And everybody has the same mindset, a dawg mentality,” David said.

Again the clock strikes twice…I couldn’t agree more!!! I’ve been able to type that before…except for your Bowles posts of course……….

We will be a much improved defense in 2025,

I like Yaya, I like Reddick, l think David Walker will pust Anthony Nelson and Braswell for playing time. I believe we will get more sacks from the Edge Rushers this season. I think with Tykee at SS, he will bring pressure also. I like our young rookies CBs. Elijah Roberts should take William Gholston spot in the rotation.

I can’t wait for the season opener

    Three Questions for the Defense:
    1. Can Hasson and the Rookie CB perform?
    2. Can our MLB stay healthy?
    3. Can CK and Yaya elevate their games?

3 Yes – Top 5 Defense. Super Bowl contender.
2 Yes – Top 10 Defense. Dark Horse.
1 Yes – No Change. NFCS Champs.
0 Yes – May Miss Playoffs

Look, I’d rather line up and pressure the O and if I get beat deep every now and then so be it – maybe now we have more personnel to actually do it

I just can’t stand another season of 10 yard off coverage and bailing at the snap with the middle of the field wide arse open play after play

Pressure isn’t just blitzing, it’s rolling your corners and SS up and not give away easy completions –

Todd’s favorite blitz – C or S off the edge – every single time we run it the backside corner runs 20 yards deep at the snap – EVERY team in the league just runs an out pattern and completes a 15 yard play in front of said CB – EVERY TIME!

The scheme better improve or we are toast again unless we put up 35 a game

Love hearing the PLAYERS and leaders of the team believe… THAT is what matters most. 👍🏼

  8. go dawgs Says:

did anyone think he was going to say they are terrible and cant cover or rush the passer? Player interviews about the team are vanilla, sorry.

  9. ballwasher61 Says:

I don’t know Dawgs, sometimes a player just says what needs to be said, I can remember Zion saying a few straight forward things that anyone could read the tea leaves in but just said it strait: WE, as players, need to be better. That is the truth. Bad plays are gonna happen, hell, it’s the NFL, elite on both sides no question. But it is still fundamentals, emphasis on the ‘mentals’ part. We see what experience does but so does just flat out instincts as a player and David has those un-coachable traits.

I believe it’s these traits that David has that is what Licht & Bowels are looking for, that’s why he is the model for I am that man. You can’t go wrong with those. Otto Graham who always played for a Championship said ‘ Talent without hard work and commitment mean nothing’. If we can avoid the injury bug I think we’ll be there with a good season at the end.

This defense and Coach Todd have a lot to prove this season. Most of us are tired of a nonexistent pass defense. Need to see significant improvement on the field. This time of year talk is cheap.
