Bucs Training Camp Practice Notes Day 2

July 24th, 2025

Second day of training camp is a wrap for David Walker (51) and YaYa Diaby.

Day 2 is done for the Bucs as training camp is starting to get warmed up.

Today was the first time fans could attend and boy, did fans take advantage of a rare, slightly comfortable day in the late-July Florida sun. There was a stiff breeze throughout practice that helped keep the surroundings bearable.

Open seats in the bleachers were very hard to find.

Otherwise, it was a quiet practice. Nothing shocking or startling. Nothing really jumped out.

Caution: It is still underwear football. Pads are not expected to come on until Monday.

The following are a few highlights. If Joe doesn’t mention a specific player, it just means either he didn’t flash or Joe didn’t see him make a play. It’s not personal.

(Joe chooses to follow the ball, so Joe can’t watch both the ball and how, say, a cornerback on the other side of the field is matching up with a receiver or what type of coverage shell the secondary may be in.)

* Packed house for the first practice open to finds. There are hardly a seat to be found.

* In a punt return drill, an assistant coach rolled a ball on the ground to get returners used to scooping up a wayward punt. The first move Joe saw, a ball rolled right through the legs of Trey Palmer. Joe immediately saw Tez Johnson, standing nearby, quickly mimicking scooping up a loose ball as if he was shortstop legend Ozzie Smith.

* How fired up were fans for football? Mike Evans caught a routine pass in a drill and the crowd went crazy.

* Evans “scores” a touchdown in drills to teach receivers to keep get both feet in bounds. His momentum carried him to the fans and he slapped skin with several amid squeals of delight. Couple of youngsters had their summers made, gasping at each other, mouths agape, as Evans returned to work.

* Maybe the Bucs are holding Bucky Irving back for some reason or maybe he has a tweak of some sort but Joe hasn’t noticed him getting a ton of touches through two practices. He had the first two runs of practice today. The first up the middle and the second he ran right and then cut back up the middle for a nice gain.

* Baker Mayfield fakes a handoff to Rachaad White and throws to the left sideline in a crowd, incomplete.

* White on a short pass to the right.

* Kyle Trask hit Sterling Shepard on a short pass to the right.

* Trask with a quick flip to Ryan Miller to the left side.

* Camp meat trying to get under Vita Vea’s skin? Looked like there was some woofing between Bucs All-Pro defensive tackle Vita Vea and UDFA Ben Scott of Nebraska. Vea probably pulled a Playoff Lenny and hollered at Scott, “Who are you?”

* PICK! Gruesome throw by Mayfield. Looked like Mayfield was trying to hit receiver Dennis Houston along the left sideline. Perhaps Houston cut the wrong way or Bryce Hall perfectly jumped the route? Mayfield hit Hall squarely in the numbers. Couldn’t have served it up any better for Hall. It was so bad, that Hall picked the pass on about the 15 or 20 and just stood there not even trying to house it. Because no one was between Hall and the goal line. Better to get that out of your system in July than later. After coaches hollered, Hall sort of meandered across the goal line to make it look good. That’s Hall’s second pick-six in as many practices.

* Jalen McMillan catches a pass from Mayfield over the middle that was sort of behind him. Behind him enough that McMillan stumbled but he hung on as he was wide ass open.

* Shilo Sanders thought he had Mayfield dead to right. Sanders had a clear blitz lane to Mayfield and he shot through to try to get the sack. But Mayfield handed the ball off to White on a draw. White blew right by Sanders.

* Trask gets the ball to Sean Tucker to the left and Tucker weaves through traffic down the field.

* LSU RB Josh Williams busts through the line. They’re watching him.

* Weird: Under some pressure, Trask sidearms a ball shortly over the middle for Houston.

* Leave Kyle Trask alone! In consecutive plays, Trask runs for his life to avoid heat.

* Trask launches a deep ball to Devin Culp down the left sideline but the ball was underthrown.

Red Zone

* Mayfield throws for White in the far right corner of the end zone and White skies for the ball but can’t come down with it.

* White runs left, cuts inside, scores.

* Mayfield throws right for White, who is getting a lot of touches and targets today.

* Signal lost: Trask throws for Culp to the right corner and maybe Trask thought Culp was in The Licht House end zone two blocks away instead, or maybe Trask was throwing it away, but not even the Jolly Green Giant had a chance of catching that one.

* Trask makes up for that with a touchdown pass to the right for Kameron Johnson.

Red Zone 7-7

* Mayfield for Payne Durham in the far right corner. No. Durham tried to make a one-handed catch and to be fair, it appeared Jacob Parrish may have held him. Parrish was in tight coverage.

* Mayfield to Evans near the back line down the middle under the goal post as Evans ran from left to right… man, that’s just too easy. Evans looked like he was walking to the fridge for a beer.

* Kyle Trask tries to hit Cade Otton on the far right corner but no bueno. Veteran free agent cornerback Kindle Vildor was in coverage.

* Trask attempts to link up with Johnson in the middle of the end zone and Benjamin Morrison tips the ball out of the end zone.

* Shepard hauls in a Trask pass on a look-in over the middle. Joe couldn’t tell if that was Deion Jones or UDFA Roman Parodie from Ohio in coverage.

* Mayfield tried to go right for Otton but as soon as Otton reached for the ball, it sure looked like he was chicken-winged by a defender. Otton even raised his hands and looked for a flag. No referees out there today, Cade.

11-on-11

* Mayfield scrambles quickly to the left and tippy-toes down the sideline for a first down. The crowd roared its approval.

* Trask throws a bomb down the middle for Johnson who lays out, parallel to the ground and for a brief moment it appeared Johnson had a tremendous catch. But he couldn’t hang on after he hit the turf.

* Medium-ranged bomb from Trask down the middle but this time there is no one home.

More Red Zone

* YaYa Diaby bursts through from Diaby’s right and strips Mayfield. YaYa fought to pick up the ball but it fell at the feet of Ben Bredeson who just simply fell on the ball to recover it.

* Trask throws to White in the far right corner and White seemed to jump through the clouds for the ball. But it was tight coverage by Antonio Grier and White couldn’t come down with the ball.

* Trask aims for Rakim Jarrett over the middle but it is a no-go, incomplete.

    Really liking Josh Williams.

Evans is having the time of his life out there, loving it.

“Trask runs for his life to avoid heat.” This cracked me up!

Thanks again for the detailed notes!

  4. Hodad Says:

No need to over use Bucky in camp. We have four other backs. Only three will probably make the final 53. Let the four slug it out for the 2 spots.

  5. BigBoiBuc Says:

Sounds like DBs would have had a lot of flags thrown at them today.

  6. Bee Says:

Can’t wait for the pad practices! Great notes.

    Love bullet point season!

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

Seeing the picture of YaYa reminds me he totally blanketed Otton on a sidelines route – great coverage by YaYa. Yep, bad news as YaYa may be dropped in coverage more this year! 😉

  12. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    ^^
It amazes me, because 10-15 years ago nobody would gripe about an OLB covering a TE, the game has changed

  13. TampaBayBucFan Says:

    No Mylew sightings……that’s always good.

  14. LakelandBuc Says:

The Pittsburgh Steelers run a 3-4 defense similar to our

During his 8 seasons in Pittsburgh, TJ Watt has dominated
Not only has he been a sack machine( 108 sacks)
But he also have 50 PD, 7 INTs

  15. Oxycondomns Says:

how does white look like out there ?

  16. First Last Says:

I like to see Sterling with the 2’s because it gives Mayfield more time for the others. Really shows their chemistry that he doesn’t need to really throw to him much.

  17. Woodman Says:

Who cares about T.J. Watt?Go directly to steelers web site if you are such a fan!

  18. Boge Says:

really interested to see who gets the WR5 and WR6 spots. I’m thinking Shepard and Johnson. Fun competition.

  19. LakelandBuc Says:

    Woodman,

    Just saying,

Quit making excuses for these underperforming Edge Rushers

It’s not the system, it’s the bums in the system

  20. HC Grover Says:

This is better than being there. TX Joe

  21. LakelandBuc Says:

If Todd plays a soft zone this season, I’m done

He has the Corners to play Man Press Coverage

  22. GoneGator Says:

    @LakelandBuc
He’ll play more “man press” this season but will major in some form of zone….just like the other 31 teams in the league. .

Pretty sure NOBODY runs man to man more than 50% of their snaps on a regular basis, if at all.

  23. BucsFan88 Says:

What’s your thoughts on bazelak so far? Didn’t see any notes on him today

  24. GoneGator Says:

    Did Reddick practice?

  25. Joe Says:

What’s your thoughts on bazelak so far?

    Not very good. No accurate.

Didn’t see any notes on him today.

Won’t see much in the future, either. He’s not part of the Bucs plans.

  26. JimBobBuc Says:

Thanks for the great write up Joe!!!

  27. garro Says:

Good stuff as usual Joe! Thanks!
Love Evans High Fiving the kids Joe! Makes me wish I was there.

    Go Bucs!

  28. Aqualung Says:

    Clearly

Trey Palmer, Rakim Jarrett, and Kam “Kenny Bell” Johnson better get their oil changing skills polished up. They suck.

Pass defense looks like it’s going to continue the great mastermind’s tradition of regression.
