Baker Mayfield Says Bucs Guaranteed His Contract Through 2026

July 28th, 2025

The Bucs quarterback broke news today.

So in March of 2024, Baker Mayfield re-signed with the Bucs on a three-year deal worth up to $100 million.

The third year of the contract, a $40 million salary for 2026, was not guaranteed. Per Mayfield talking to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports HQ after practice today, the Bucs met Mayfield’s request to guarantee his 2026 salary.

Asked about contract talks with the Bucs for another extension, Mayfield shared the news.

“You know, right now, I’m under contract through 2026,” Mayfield said. “So it was really just about getting guaranteed money for 2026, and they did that. And that’s all I can ask for. I signed the contract and knew what it was. You know, right now it’s winning. I know good things will happen after that. But I trust this place. I love being here. Obviously, [I’m] used to bouncing around. I’ve done that before, but I don’t want to leave.”

Smart move by the Bucs to keep their underpaid quarterback happy with peace of mind for 2026. Mayfield was more than worthy, especially considering Team Glazer handed Todd Bowles a guaranteed extension through 2028.

    In Baker we trust

Great move by the Bucs, should’ve extended him for longer because #6 will be much more expensive after 2026.

    Go Bucs!!!!!!

  2. SlyPirate Says:

Right after Baker signed his contract, Randy Moss said:

Baker will never get to the final year of his deal. He’ll get released or he’ll hold out.

I appreciate when teams and players complete their contracts. It shows character and commitment on both sides. Licht has built a solid culture.

Baker is a good guy. I love what he said about winning and not wanting to leave. Go Bucs!

    Keep baking Mayfield

  5. Oneilbuc Says:

I just want him to be cluch in the playoffs he’s good during the regular season I have no problem with Baker Mayfield in the regular season it’s the playoffs. We get to a conference championship game then I will agree with a long term contract

  6. Vanessa Anne Says:

This is a win/win for both sides.

  7. Saskbucs Says:

Seems like a no brainer. Hopefully he avoids major injury, that’s the only way this goes bad but that’s football.

ONeilBuc … I wanna see some playoff success and Baker avoiding untimely miscues but that’s only part of the equation. The other part is who you potentially replace Baker with and that’s a problem.

I don’t know who the upcoming FA QBs are but going off the last couple years, I would extend Baker 3 more years tomorrow. (At a reasonable price say $45 per)

Cousins, Rodgers, Darnold, Flacco… those have been the FA QBs recently and I want no part of that in the future. Safe to say we won’t be drafting one high in the next couple years either.

We are all greatly relieved that you will “agree with a long term contract” for Mayfield under any circumstances. Mostly, we are surprised that you are not insisting on signing Jameis Winston, Jordan Love, or Justin Fields to play QB for the Bucs.

    modern day brett farve

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Stop choking in playoff games and you’ll be getting a much bigger check in the future. I hope you can do it.

  11. Ugo Says:

Some of you guys really are… something.
Baker literally has one of the highest career playoff passer ratings in NFL history. In the lost against Washington he had the highest playoff passer rating ever recorded by the qb of a losing team, he had done enough to win but our porous defense couldn’t stop anything, partially due to all the injuries.

  12. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Onei, you act like you don’t understand or remember that Baker IS the most clutch “playoff” quarterback in NFL history. Just like last year he had the highest passer rating out of everyone, again.146 IS clutch no matter how you slice it. Could it be the “players” around him make the mistakes? Could it be? I hate to be the one to tell you but Baker has never crumbled under pressure. That’s the reason he has the highest career “playoff” passer rating of all time, 105.9 and Mahomes at 105.8. He eats pressure for breakfast. He has only been doing it his whole career thats all. He will prove it again, this year. Sit back and watch him go to work!!!

  13. George R Says:

This is a good thing, Bucs showing Baker the love. Bucs didn’t have to guarantee the last year. Baker will remember that. Now Baker can be Baker this year and not worry about injury. Baker will sing a below market extension next year the same way Mike and Chris did.

  14. Donnyd Says:

If Baker continues to improve he’ll be making $60 mill. With Dak at $60 and others at $55+, next up is always more. Hopefully they sign him before next season and maybe get a small discount that helps sign one or two of our many FA’s next year. I’ve been a fan since 1976 and watched many “Franchise QB’s” come here to die. Doug Williams could have been if our owner wasn’t a racist. We trade the top pick in 1992 for Colts washout Chris “Chandelier”Chandler only to cut him a year later (oh our owner was CHEAP AS HELL.
He was cool with having Bo play else where after offering him a bunch of land/ money knowing he was pissed. Trade first pick for QB only to cut him and save money. We Draft Vinny, Trent, Josh & Jameis in the first round and all sucked (here). It’s nice to have a franchise QB in his prime. Go Baker – Go Bucs

  15. LakelandBuc Says:

To all of the Bucs players,

Win some playoff games, stats are for losers
    Quick

  16. Bucs4Ever Says:

    steal…

  17. Oneilbuc Says:

Davyboy. How many conferences championships games did Baker Mayfield play in? That’s my point I don’t care about stats if the quarterback when he’s needed can’t win games or close them out in the playoffs.

  18. Usfbucs Says:

Good news, hopefully the Bucs start talking extensions before the offseason with our key players.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

People quoting the old outdated broken passer rating like it means anything – they’re extremely clueless. Modern offenses, where you do a ton of short passes and WRs are expected to get YAC inflate the numbers dramatically since the passer rating metric greatly overvalues completion percentage. Baker has played mostly well, but failed when it mattered most, that’s why the team hasn’t already given him a new deal. If he doesn’t single handedly lose the game vs the Redskins, if the Bucs go to Philly the following week – where they own the Eagles – well Baker would right now be on the highest paid QBs in the league. But he did fail, like he failed in Detroit. Two playoff games in a row where he makes huge turnovers when it matters most is what is holding him back from being talked about as a top QB. If he overcomes that this year, he’ll be rewarded in a big way. If he doesn’t – then the Bucs will take it year by year for another season and start looking towards the future. The pressure is on, hopefully he can come through on more than the stat sheet of someone stuck in the 1980s.

  20. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Like I said Rod, he’s only been doing it for 10 years, thats all. You actually said a guy with the highest passer rating is a choker and bum. You do realize that’s an oxymoron, right? It’s impossible for someone who CONTINUALLY plays better under extreme pressure, NFL playoffs, to the point of having the highest playoff passer rating in NFL history to say they are a choker. No, no Rod and Onei you boys are truly confused. At most Baker made a mistake. It’s not choking when you throw 84% completion percentage 15 of 18. LMAO man you guys are L O S T…
    146 passer rating
    84% completion %
    Average yards 10.3
    0 interceptions
Yeah, that’s the opposite of choking, just so you know. Like you’ll think about the truth, logic & sense of it.
People that choke don’t have THE HIGHEST PASSER RATING IN PLAYOFF HISTORY.
There are only 7 quarterbacks that have a playoff passer rating in the 100’s. It obviously is an accomplishment and very difficult to do but not only is Baker on the list of 7 but he leads the way. I am quite sure the 7 on this list are not chokers: Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner, Josh Allen, Deshaun Watson before the Cleveland quarterback death spiral, Russel Wilson AND yours truly BM6. Anyone that calls any of these 7 chokers and a bum has serious mental issues, just sayin….🤔

  21. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Rod, you have totally lost it. No credibility whatsoever
Tom Brady is the king of short passes and you said nothing about that. Isn’t that interesting!! And the NFL loves and trusts the passer rating. Clueless

  22. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    what about cap ramifications

  23. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Extend him now 3 more years 50 million per ,,, that’s an average of 47mil for the next 5 years ,,, good for him and will look like a bargain for us in a few years ,,, Bucs will get to at least an NFC championship w this guy ,,, let’s get the D a top 15 D and we will roll

  24. Cardiac kidz Says:

What a TEAM Player Baker is. He very well could have played through this year and held out for a ransom or settled for the Franchise pick which certainly would have been greater than $40M.

The dude only wants to win, lead by example but by all means win. He has demonstrated it by the way he plays, takes the team loss on himself and fore goes the financial gains that soooo many others strive for.

    Baker is a true TEAM Player and demonstrating great Character. I like everyone else on this website are hoping for wins, playoffs and more SB Titles. Stop the hate, appreciate what we have in the QB slot. We are so much better off than almost 30 other teams. There are a few better, I’ll give you that but they have the TEAM bent over the barrel financially to the point they can’t protect or provide weapons. If they do, the defense is so robbed of talent they have to score 40 points a game to win;
Buffalo, LAR, Dallas, Cincinnati and very soon the Chiefs.

  25. Gipper Says:

Aw yes, Munch shows up to add his limited insight. Munch, thought you had turned your attention to something you are good at like shuffleboard? Still have that shirtless Brady poster hanging on your bedroom wall? With a mediocre Tampa defense, Baker and his offense are going to excel this year. Still have all your negative Baker comments. You are in good company with Oneilbuc. Both of you are delirious and are proven football frauds.

  26. BucYou Says:

No brainer. If he plays this season like he did these last two years, I’d suspect he’d receive an extension after this season for 3 years $170M or so. No reason he doesn’t finish his career here.

  27. Bucs4Ever Says:

Pay him!!!!!In my best Chris Tucker voice…

  28. View from 132 Says:

$40,000,000. For a top 15 QB. The NFL is insane.

  29. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Oops the powers that be at One Buc Place just made a huge mistake Rod. Those dummies went off the rails and guaranteed our choking quaterback $30 million in 2026!!!! Why would they give a quaterback $30 million guaranteed who continually chokes when the pressure is on??!!?!
Could it be they know something you dont or refuse to admit?? Whatever it is, that $30 million is as much or more in the guaranteed department, as for any quarterback in the NFL, except for Watson. Well the only conclusion I can come to is they disagree with old Rod about Bakers history with the Bucs, in other words he’s not a choker, he’s a stud quaterback that they feel is going to lead this team to a superbowl which you Rod said would never happen. It’s all startin to happen. Sit back and enjoy. If you’re the very few that have big mouths and know nothing about football, you can start cringing about….NOW!!!
