Commanding Josh Grizzard

June 13th, 2025

Rookie Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard.

The great mystery at One Buc Palace has won over another soldier.

Rookie playcaller/offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, last year’s Bucs third-down coordinator, knows his players (heck, every starter is returning), and that includes Mike Evans. They’re peers. Grizzard turned 35 this week and Evans celebrates his 32nd birthday in August.

Evans said yesterday that he’s admired seeing a new side of “Grizz,” as he’s known at One Buc Palace. It seems Grizzard commands a room.

“Josh – you know, Coach ‘Grizz’ is… last year we talked a lot but he didn’t talk as much in groups, and he does a really great job of talking in front of everybody,” Evans said. “And we didn’t get to see that last year, but he’s a really great coach and I look forward to having a great season for him.”

Joe has heard nothing but great things about how Grizzard has had a seamless transition to his new role. Still, he’s a major team X-factor.

Calling plays under game pressure cannot be simulated very well in practice.  Frankly, Joe hopes Team Glazer has paid for or developed the latest and greatest and greatest technology to help Grizzard prep for playcalling over the next six weeks.

Yeah. Trial by fire when the season starts. He seems very sharp and bound to make mistakes but he will get better with the experience. Lots of offense at his fingertips that most coaches would kill to have at their disposal.

  2. JimBobBuc Says:

Licht needs to find a wiz kid who can build an AI game simulator so Grizz gets in 100’s of reps per day. Grizz has to get two plays into Baker within 10-15 seconds for enough time to get up to the line and then Bake can audible out of the call. Sounds like a darn tough job for Grizz…

  3. buc4evr Says:

looks like another HC in the making. Miami or New Orleans next season. LOL.

  4. Aqualung Says:

El Serpiente gagged plenty of times under pressure, especially towards the end. No need to be cute and fancy when the OL is dominating.

  5. BOB Says:

JimBobBuck raised a good question. Can AI be used play calling?

  6. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

This comment will make me look amazing if it’s true.

Grizz is good, but just misses out on a HC job and returns next year.

He does even better in 2026.

Meetings happen January 2027, Todd rides off into a well earned upstairs position, with an office next to BA and HC Grizz takes over.

Let’s hope we get 2 seasons out of this one

  8. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

We have one of the top offenses in the league. Us – the Bucs. That is amazing and shocking for us original fans since ‘76. We won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady. Ummmm… what’s that? Dreaming obviously. Don’t wake me.

  9. Obvious Says:

The great thing about having Evans, wirfs, Godwin, and mayfield is that they’ve been in a lot of nfl games and have been together now for two years and will have the same terminology. If this dude is as smart as they say, he’ll lean on those vets who have rings for guidance. Especially in game.

If that happens, there’s no reason the offense can’t be one of the top 3-5 again.

  10. LouisFriend Says:

With the Bucs recent history, Grizzard has better than a longshot chance of being the 2026 head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

  11. FilthyAnimal Says:

Everything sounds good, but calling plays on gameday and responding to situations on the fly, that’s a different skill. Won’t really know how good he is until he calls games. Fortunately, all the reports indicate he has the smarts, attention to detail, and communication skills to do it.

  12. RustyRhinos Says:

How many games has Coach Moore called offensive plays for, and he is on the staff, right? Nothing to see here..

Excited for Grizz to get his opportunity..

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  13. Saskbucs Says:

I’m not concerned about Grizz with live bullets.

The ability to adapt in game and stay ahead of the calls is created in weekly preparation and by all accounts, this is a smart and hardworking OC who will enter every game day well prepared.

“Nothing else in the world…not all the armies…is so powerful as an idea whose time has come.” – Victor Hugo

I have a sneaky suspicion Josh Grizzard‘s time has come. He just seems to be “that” guy — the one who takes over 3rd down plays incognito and then, “Shazam!” leads the league.

Doesn’t lead with his hand, leads with his chin.

    Damn I’m excited!!!

  15. Usfbucs Says:

AI could easily call plays and would likely be faster and more effective against a human coach.

  16. Usfbucs Says:

I think Grizz will be fine. He already has experience game planning and calling plays on third downs. I bet he has a strong season as the coordinator and I hope the prediction by Drunk Bucs Fan comes true.

  17. Aqualung Says:

If we can muster another top 5 offense and even a top 20 pass defense, and even have top 25 game management decisions, 12 wins is very doable.

I mean last year, 2 more wins were in the bag and they were gagged away.

12 should have been last year’s win total.

It really needs to be this year’s.

  18. GoneGator Says:

He was pass game coordinator in addition to 3rd downs.

    My guess :
We’ll see (as the season progresses) more explosive pass plays down field, more 2 back sets, more creative uses of motion particularly @ snap (vs presnap). Possibly more timing routes.

I think it will look like our offense last year with some Miami offense from a couple years back mixed in.

  19. gotbbucs Says:

You’re worrying about the wrong coordinator, Joe. Two years in a row we’ve had an OC still in diapers outperform our defensive guru defensive coordinator.
This is a veteran offense. I’m not worried about that side of the ball at all. They’ll score the go-ahead with 50 seconds left, just to watch the other offense drive the field and kick the winning points with time to spare.

  20. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Sometimes when promoting a no.2 to no.1. You end up in a situation where the new No.1 doesn’t have an experienced No.2 to rely on. I hope Grizz was able to pick a replacement he has confidence in.

  21. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Never really thought about AI in football till this discussion. Makes a lot sense specifically for calling plays as mentioned. It could be used in all types of things from examining game tape, practice techniques, ref calls, time management, basacilly anything. Teams might already be using it to there advantage and I never thought about it till now.I can almost invision a QB with his hands on his helmet trying to listen to a play call in the headset from a AI voice from the program running upstairs.

  22. Capt.Tim Says:

Baker Mayfield has never had the same offensive coordinator two years in a row.
Let that sink in. He’s had to learn a new offense every season.
    It’s really unbelievable
This is as close as he’s got.
I really hope Grizzard sticks around for a few years, and is wildly successful.

I’m dying to see how great Mayfield plays, if he’s not having to learn a new system a couple years in a row.
