Todd Bowles Identifies A Starting Cornerback

May 9th, 2025

Bucs rookie third-round pick Jacob Parrish.

Bold, bold talk today from head coach Todd Bowles after the first rookie minicamp practice of the 2025 season.

Asked about third-round pick cornerback Jacob Parrish, who had an impressive interception today with outstretched arms, Bowles was emphatic.

“I’m very comfortable with him [at] outside [cornerback]. He can start corner in this league probably for anybody, and he can play inside as well,” Bowles said of Parrish, after emphatically noting that Parrish is not being targeted only as a nickel corner.

“So that’s the beauty of him. He’s not just a nickel. I think he’s an outside corner first and then a nickel second. So the fact that he plays inside is just a bonus for us.”

Fastest player on the field today? Bowles said that was Parrish.

Bowles stressed the team has Parrish learning the nickel position for maximum versatility and matchup capability.

Jamel Dean, you are on notice!

I thought the headline read, “Todd Bowles Identifies As A Starting Cornerback” – which would have been a heck of an exclusive.

Parrish has some real heat behind him, he was a guy who started to skyrocket with his workout numbers, and the hype seems to keep going. If the Bucs hit on Morrison and Parrish, and extend Zyon and Smith keeps improving, that’s a great future defensive backfield to go with Winfield.

  2. Joe Says:

he was a guy who started to skyrocket with his workout numbers

Tez Johnson today put “workout numbers” in their proper perspective — which is why “this Joe” pays zero attention to the indoor track practice in Indianapolis each winter.

    “The game ain’t running a 40.”

And who can forget Warren Sapp saying, “You don’t pump weights on the 50-yard line.”

    Football ain’t track.

    Football ain’t the Olympics.

  3. Scott Says:

Interesting. Maybe they put him on the outside sometimes against smaller quicker DBs.

  4. Pmike Says:

Hope he turns out like Denzel Ward. Similar build

  5. KABucs Says:

If he keeps getting practice ints the better for him.

If you haven’t heard for the umpteenth time, Bowles wants ball hawks.

  6. Scott Says:

I meant to say maybe they match Parrish up against smaller quicker WRs on the outside sometimes.

  7. ToddBowles#1 Says:

We’re talking about practice. Not a game. Practice.

Calm down with all the Polly positive talk.

The more hype we get, the worse it will end up being.

    Mark my words.

    LOL

  9. Aqualung Says:

Gosh, let’s make sure he can line up at nose tackle, stuff the run as a DE, and drop 45 yards deep into the endzone to make sure the ball doesn’t go over his head. Versatility is a Todd staple.

TB#1 – we should hope for bad practices?!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not being a wet blanket because I’m sure Parrish was a great pick….but who did he intercept.

  12. Obvious One Says:

    Come on Todd Bowles #1…

This is the time of the year when you let your hair down a little bit and dream of the possibilities of a brighter future with New Heroes and renewed excitement and faith.

Screw it… Can complain later no problem. But today, soak it up a little and be at ease. Maybe even a little Gleem in Your Eyes. Today’s a day we “hope” and smoke hopeium, and dream a little dream that the head coach Finally figures it out

Have a nice cocktail and and put a smile on your face for the potential Great Season we just might get.

Personally, a couple more holes shored up and I’m smiling. At least right up to the first bone headed call…

But today, IT’S EXCITING to hear new heroes are flying around!

TB#1 – stop and smell the roses once in a while. Might do you some good. Doom and gloom every post gets old bro. We are fans. You?

  14. Fan of the South Says:

As long as the top of the list of leading tacklers have a LB ,DT or EDGE next their name the secondary might have a chance at making it through the season healthy.

If the List starts with David LB and is followed by DB DB S DB LB CB CB S there could be issues. Dean doesn’t leave the field because he is frail and CDIII wore down at the Lions because of key injuries to Hutchinson and others in their front 7. Davis will have a Pro Bowl year @ Patriots under LB/DE turned coach Mike Vrabel. David has been leading the charge year in and year out forever and expecting one more season could just end up bad. Prima Donna or not it was a luxury having David White or White David at the one and two spot in tackles from 2019-2022.

That sir, I will definately be doing tonight.

“Personally, a couple more holes shored up and I’m smiling. At least right up to the first bone headed call…”

That one I definately agree with 100%

That playoff game has me sour as all get out. It was a knife in the back to all the fans that watch every game and suffer every defeat. I have no confidence in this coach until proven otherwise.

NFC title game or bust at minimum. The NFC Least title is not the bar for me.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    “Mark my words”

WHY? You seem a little slow on the uptake about the reaction to your words.

The majority her do NOT respect your words, why would we mark them?

  18. toopanca Says:

According to the Bucs post draft press release, outs CB Benjamin Morrison also has experience in the slot. I f he is any good at it, all the better for depth, and all the better for disguising coverages.

  19. Ancient Says:

He’s how tall again?? Please do tell.

For any full time outside work, to not get toasted on every jump ball outside, or beat over the top deep where trajectory and height most certainly matter.

    How tall?

  20. GoneGator Says:

    “mark my words”

How are we supposed to mark your words bro….you change your name repeatedly? 🙄

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Wasn’t this just Day One of underwear football? Might be a tad early to be anointing rookie Jacob Parrish as a qualified outside corner?

  22. Dan Says:

Ever since Tampa won the Superbowl with Tom Brady Deans playing stats went down hill seems he got a ring with the goat he don’t have to play like he should so Dean ur on ur way out bud better luck with another team

  23. BucsFan28 Says:

If this doesn’t motivate Dean. Nothing will

  24. Donald G Says:

Todd is our coach because he is a great coach. He wouldnt be here otherwise. So I mean shut the hec up naysayers We (real Bucs fans since day one) love our team and coach

  25. WeDemBoyzFromDaBay Says:

    You said it @”ROD MUNCH”

I def think you are on to something there as we suddenly have (wow can’t believe I’m saying this) some decent Depth a
In our backfield that are all young n promising guys that have the potential to anchor the defense for a very long time.

    •The future of the secondary•
Zyon (has gotten better every year and is our #1 for now.
Morrison-1st round talent, and our future #1 potentially
Parrish- elite speed and can do it all including tackle.(Future star)
Smith- our lone bright spot in the backfield last year
Winfield- Best safety in the NFL (when healthy)

  26. Aqualung Says:

    More PollyAnna and her flashlight.

BA was a great HC. Todd was a good DC under him, aided by the 30ppg BA’s offense delivered.

Todd has a losing record as a HC, one game over .500 as a Bucs dual hat. Nothing great about that.

  27. Teacherman Says:

The first time in Bucs history that we are 5 deep at CB.

    First time ever!

    Dean
    Zion
    Bryce Hall
    Morrison
    Parish

    I cant believe it!

I hope we grab 2 more next year too!

I want 6 feisty corners on the roster!

    Go Bucs!
