Was Chucky Indirectly Coaching Up Baker Mayfield?

May 11th, 2025

“You GD right I was talking with Liam Coen last year about Baker Mayfield. LOVE that guy, Baker, Jiminy Christmas!”

This got Joe to thinking.

Now Joe has zero clue if the following actually happened or if it is true. But dang, Joe’s nose for a story is going off like someone transported Joe to Black’s Barbecue in Lockhart, Tex. (Not to be confused with Terry Black’s, which is also good.)

So yesterday after Jags rookie minicamp practice, 1010XL radio reporter Mia O’Brien noted that head coach Liam Coen was raving about Jags undrafted free agent quarterback Seth Henigan.

Why go crazy about some schlep QB when Coen has Trevor Lawrence? Well, Coen said he got tipped off about Henigan, out of the University of Memphis, based on texts from Chucky.

Henigan had been in Tampa to tape one of Chucky’s quarterback camp episodes for Barstool Sports. Chucky liked Henigan so much he texted Coen telling him he ought to sign Henigan.

So let Joe get this straight: Coen has developed such a close tie to Chucky in the 3 1/2 months since he became Jags coach that Chucky is tipping him off about quarterbacks? That seems to be an awfully tight bond in such a short amount of time.

And given Coen was the Bucs’ offensive coordinator last year, Joe finds it difficult to believe Coen never had a sitdown with Chucky when both lived in the same city — especially considering so many coaches visit Chucky’s lair to pay homage to the Bucs’ Super Bowl-winning coach and to talk shop,.

That brings Joe to the next logical step: Was Chucky, even in a small way, indirectly coaching up Baker Mayfield through Coen?

Joe doesn’t think that’s much of a stretch given Chucky thinks so much of Coen he’s become a bird dog scout for the Jags and Coen trusts Chucky’s evals of quarterbacks enough to sign one.

Intrigue!

I can’t make head or tails out of this.

    Joe, ketamine is dangerous.
Joe is not on drugs and Joe is confident your issues have been fixed. –Joe

  2. August1976Buc Says:

Coen ran the best offense, running and throwing, both combined, not just good at passing, I have ever seen since 1976 for the Bucs.

Why wouldn’t Gruden like and respect what Coen was doing last season.

Seems like a normal thing to see something like this happening.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  3. No Mercy Says:

Both offensive guys so I can see it. Just cringe to be tight with a snake like coen 🐍 🐍 I use to lowkey root for Jax when they weren’t playing the Bucs but not anymore

  4. Bojim Says:

Been to Blacks in TX a couple times. Chunky gets way too much credit.

  5. Stanglassman Says:

This Qb looks 10x better than the camp arm (Connor Bazelak) the Bucs signed as a UDFA. I’d like to think that Bucs staff knew about Henigan but were just unable to sign him. Why no team drafted him late day 3 is crazy. The guy is 42-2 W-L and his TD to Interception is 79-14. Threw for over 7k in college.

  6. Joe Says:

Been to Blacks in TX a couple times.

The beef ribs at Black’s (not “Terry Black’s”) are what dreams are made of.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Article started off with … ‘Joe has ZERO CLUE if the following actually happened or if it is true.’ Fair enough.

It pretty much ends with … ‘That brings Joe to the NEXT LOGICAL STEP: Was Chucky, even in a small way, indirectly coaching up Baker Mayfield through Coen?’ Huh?

I know that this is a really hard time of year for Bucs’ news Joe, but in what world does ‘ZERO CLUE’ progress to ‘NEXT LOGICAL STEP’?

Oh wait, I forgot about Washington DC. My bad.

  8. UKBuccaneer Says:

Given Chucky’s record of developing QB’s, I’d be wary of attributing any of Baker’s success to him…

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think that is a huge stretch.

Gruden doesn’t coach up QBs. Never did.

  10. Bucsarg Says:

Coen was focused on his next job more than the game plan to beat the Redskins. How many plays was White in for? Oh? Chucky is gone so is Coen. They are both entertaining and have zero to do with the bucs 2025 season. Baker needs neither of them nor do the Bucs nor do I.

  11. Canabuc Says:

    I have a different interpretation.
I think the reason you told Corn about him is that perhaps he realizes that this quarterback deserves a shot and well Trevor Lawrence has been very underwhelming. Perhaps he felt this guy would have a better shot of making the roster on a team like the Jaguars rather than on the Buccaneers.

  12. StickinUp4Centers Says:

If Trevor Lawrence is dethroned by a UDFA, I’d assume that draft pick the Jags gave up for Hunter will be valuable.

  13. Todd Says:

    yawn

  14. ATLBucsSolar Says:

Who’s the best QB Gruden has coached? Rich Gannon? Don’t know why he’s considered such a guru.

  15. Allen Lofton Says:

The drama and hype will only get worse. Can’t wait for preseason to start.
What happens on the field will be the telling story.

  16. Fred Says:

    Chucky, our next head coach.

  17. ATLBucsSolar Says:

I wonder if they considered bringing Chucky in as an offensive offensive coordinator! 😂😂😂

  18. geno711 Says:

I would go with Bruce Arians every day and all day long on understanding QB’s over Jon Gruden.

    Not even close for me.

If Coen and Jacksonville, has Chucky for his inside information on QB’s

    AND

Grizzard and the Bucs, have BA and Tom Moore as their inside information guys on QB’s.

    Really no comparison. Go Bucs.

  19. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Yummy! Black’s BBQ in Lockhart is about 77 miles from me. The closest one is in New Braunfels which is 40 miles away.

  20. Todd Says:

    Let the controversy begin!

    Yeah, let the rumors begin!!!

  21. Uhmmm Says:

What in the Fox News is going on with this article

  22. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I went to San Antonio last month and had Texas BBQ for the first time, it made me want to move there and marry waitress.

  23. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    *the waitress

  24. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Chucky probably reached out to several coaches, not just Coen. Chucky working to remain in the loop.

  25. ToddBowles#1 Says:

Chucky over Arians. He didn’t hamstring the organization by forcing them to hire a bumbling fool.

Bowles wasn’t hired he was installed.

Gruden would be a breath of fresh air.

Drop the zero and get with the hero.

    Fire Bowles now!!!

  26. DrunkInYbor Says:

Meh…Ill take a nothing burger with speculation a side of complicity and one order of coterie.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t personally hold hard feelings toward Liam Coen. He did what was best for his career and his family. Not my place to jusge.

I found him to be an okay OC, not great..but in a pinch, I would accept him coming back as OC if he fails there and iur new OC does poorly.

  28. ModHairKen Says:

This was a HOF response: “Joe is not on drugs and Joe is confident your issues have been fixed. –Joe“

  29. ModHairKen Says:

Gruden, to my memory, NEVER had a decent young QB to develop. Simms? Just search about him in Manhattan getting pulled over with smoke pouring out windows. He was unserious about the job and then he injured his spleen.

Gradkowski? Guy was not an all star but he had a long backup career. Thanks to Gruden. Josh Johnson? Ditto. Still in NFL. Thanks to Gruden. Hell, Gruden even made Brian Griese look good.

  30. Jmarkbuc Says:

Ain’t no way Joe has fixed my myriad of issues 😁

  31. Joe Says:

Yummy! Black’s BBQ in Lockhart is about 77 miles from me. The closest one is in New Braunfels which is 40 miles away.

It would be dangerous for Joe, both financially and physically, to live in east-central Texas.

  32. GoneGator Says:

Chucky is just another loud mouth old guy trying to stay relevant.

Last year he predicted Kirk cousins and Atlanta would win the nfc. 🙄

  33. bob Says:

More back story; Coen and Gruden lived in the same community and were essentially neighbors when Coen was in Tampa
