Todd Bowles Addresses Shilo Sanders Signing

April 28th, 2025

Within hours of an NFL Draft, it’s rare for a Buccaneers head coach, or any head coach, to address the signing of an undrafted free agent.

Well, University of Colorado safety Shilo Sanders was not just another body. He’s a big name with a big-name dad, Deion Sanders.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio today, Bowles talked about the 25-year-old who played six years of college ball for South Carolina, Jackson State and Colorado.

“I think he’s a good football player,” Bowles said. “He’s a heck of a tackler and he knows the game very well; he can see the game very well. So giving him a chance to play, we think he has a shot to help us from a safety standpoint and from a special teams standpoint. So I’m excited to get him in here and see how he moves. I saw him tackle all year. I saw him make plays. He’s a very smart player and he understands the game very well. So we thought it was worth a shot to see what he can do. And I think he’ll show himself well.”

Joe is all for the Sanders signing. No risk, plus a former NFL safety himself, Bowles certainly knows what he’s been looking at on film.

Would be crazy if he actually made the team.

If Brock Purdy can do it, why not this guy.

  2. geno711 Says:

Not sure that he had the same want to as his younger brother — but at some point may have learned that his best way to make money is to be a pro football player.

I think Shilo and Todd might be a good marriage.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Practice squad dude..

  4. geno711 Says:

Shadeur and Shilo Sanders were both 3 star recruits coming out of high school.

  5. Tye Says:

hopefully he doesn’t become a circus show like with his Dad and now his brother…
Be great for the Bucs is Shilo is the more successful one BUT odds are he will disappoint!

  6. Smarter than Joe Says:

Good luck to him, our defense needs as much help as it can get

Just posted this as a response in another place but…

Exactly — defense rules! Hopefully, Desmond Watson isn’t just a publicity signing because he’s over 400 pounds. While Watson may not have standout tape, his physical traits and coachable aspects offer potential for development. The 6-foot-6, 464-pound defensive tackle from the University of Florida impressed scouts with his athleticism during his pro day. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 36 times — the highest at the Combine — and ran a 5.93-second 40-yard dash, showcasing surprising speed for his size. A 250-pound linebacker would need to run a 40-yard dash in approximately 4.35 seconds to generate the same kinetic energy. Someone can check my math; I think that’s right.

Similarly, Sanders’ speed and experience across multiple programs could translate well. Personally, I hope Shilo Sanders pans out as well — we could use another safety. Hopefully, he’s better than people think, and getting out from under his dad’s and brother’s shadow helps him become the player he’s capable of being.

At 6 feet, 195 pounds, he ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at Colorado’s pro day. He recorded 67 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, and two fumble recoveries in his final season at Colorado, despite missing three games due to a forearm injury.

He’s not slow or a bad player; he just had that LaVar Ball factor, where it’s like, is he worth the drama?

  8. Coburn Says:

Looked a bit slow on tape, but you have to believe he will be well coached up and have less of a learning curve. Will see. No harm in having a look

  9. NJbucs23 Says:

The most I have ever seen the Joe’s talk about UDFA. You usually never hear a beep out of this site regarding UDFA signings.

    Go figure

  10. Kenton Smith Says:

I trust the coach on this one but I’d rather here about the 2 stud offensive lineman we have signed for almost 600,000 guaranteed as UDFAs

  11. Vegasbuc Says:

    Fire tb

  12. ChrisBuc2327 Says:

He can sure deliver some hits and make plays it’s all on film. I’m hoping he can come in and make a splash we need safety depth anyway.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

If his dad taught him anything, he might be good. I was not a Deion fan. But, the man was great. A little brash for my liking but sometimes that type of bravado is needed to help lift a team up. Training camp tells no lies. We will see what this kid has.

  14. Hodad Says:

Geno, as far as Sanders making money as a football player, his trust fund will always be bigger? He’ll never make as much money as a pro compared to what his father has already given him. Sanders could walk away from football now, and never have to work a day in his life. Kid must love to play ball to want to do this, I hope he does well.

  15. Teacherman Says:

He’s also a high character man.

He’s an unselfish and supportive brother.

He is a very loyal and good hearted person

I really hope he can make the practice squad.

    4.52 is faster than Winfield.

I really hope he makes the team.

  16. geno711 Says:

    ^^
Maybe Hodad. Not sure that 45 million for Deion Sanders is generational wealth for his 5 children in a trust fund.

If a child can make 5 million on his own football career. That seems pretty important for that child.

  17. adam from ny Says:

i wouldn’t be surprised if “the 3rd sanders”…shilo…turns out to be the best of the trio…

    you never know…

also his father was a DB…like father, like son

  18. Vanessa Anne Says:

    From dictionary.com:

    d@mnfool-jacka$$ery

Verb Orig: Middle Eng. circa 1500, V Anne, circa 1980

    1. A stupid or foolish act. 2. Speaking in an obviously transparent attempt to decieve or otherwise outright blow smoke but not fooling anyone.

Synonyms: outlandish, fandango, fiasco, three ring circus, sh!t-show

Sentence: The decision by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to bring this young man in, despite knowing how his father is, was an act of d@mnfool-jacka$$ery.

“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We’re so glad you…”

Hopefully Shilo pans out and becomes a solid contributor to the team. I haven’t watched any tape on him, so I have no idea what he might be capable of.

I’m more concerned about the three ring circus otherwise known as his old man, that’s about to come to town.

Yeah, our locker room needs helicopter-dad, three ring circus, fiasco- creating Deion Sanders hanging around like we need a migraine.

I’m not a gambler, but I’d be willing lay down good money we’re going to be seeing a lot of Deion at training camp, etc. And once the season starts, he’ll be at every home game. The weather is warmer in Tsmpa than it is in Cleveland.

I’d put down more money that he’ll do everything he can to get into our practices, and onto the sidelines during our games and run the show.

Deion Sanders is too full of himself not to.

Jason Licht! Coach Swiss Cheese! Here’s some unsolicited advice:

You sit Mr. Deion down in your office real early on, and tell him in no uncertain terms that you’re not going to put up with any of his horse manure, that he’s on a real short leash, that he’s not welcome to attend practice or games and be on the sidelines, and if he doesn’t like it, he can go pound sand.

Take your d@mnfool-jacka$$ery some place else Deion.

I sincerely hope your son isn’t like you. And I hope he makes the team on his own merit. That would be poetic justice.

  19. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I’d sure like to go fishing with the father and son. You know they’ve got some stories to tell for sure! As for football, few defensive backs played like Deion did! Hopefully that Apple didn’t fall far from the tree in this case!

  20. D-Rok Says:

So, going back to a Joe article about Bucs “attention” in the media – let’s suppose this Sanders is actually a player and makes the team.

If so, Prime will be linked to the Bucs which will bring national attention (at least more so) to the Bucs.

Not sure if that’s a net positive or a distraction (his father) but it would turn heads. “Deion’s son just got another pick…”

Let’s see if he makes the 53, first, and go from there.

Besides, this team is gonna be better than last year, so we may not even need the Prime Effect.

All I care about is, “Is Shiloh a good football player? Can he help the Bucs win?”

  21. Jason Says:

Just don’t go fish in retention ponds. Deion used to get busted for that in Ft.Myers back in the day.

  22. View from 132 Says:

He can cover punts and sell more jerseys than most guys. Will he wear 21? Lots of old timers would get a laugh out of wearing a SANDERS 21 Bucs jersey. Pairs well with Brady 12 jersey.

  23. GangstaRIB Says:

Pretty good pickup if you ask me. He’s an UDFA so no harm no fowl if it doesn’t work out.

  24. cmurda Says:

It’s worth noting that Shiloh fired his pops as his agent and hired oily Drew Rosenhaus. Good chance that Drew will make sure he squeezes out of Tampa to try to get him paid. We shall see but it was always worth the dart throw anyway

  25. Day 1-76 Says:

Doesn’t he have some character issues? I thought he was trying to claim bankruptcy to avoid paying a judgment against him for an adult he beat up in high school.

  26. Usfbucs Says:

Bucs coaches have shown they can draft/develop multiple players at CB/S
