Mike Evans Details One Reason Josh Grizzard Will Succeed
February 3rd, 2025
Locked in (on third downs).
Roughly a week before Christmas, then-Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen told the NFL world that the success of the Bucs on third downs was largely because of one man.
The Bucs led the NFL in third down conversions, which is a tremendous feat. Coen said look no further than passing game coordinator Josh Grizzard.
Coen explained Grizzard’s sphere of influence was crafting third-down plays. And the reason the Bucs did so well on those plays is because Grizzard knows what he is doing.
Yesterday at the Pro Bowl practice, Mike Evans explained that is why he believes Grizzard will have success as the Bucs’ new offensive coordinator.
“Very big point of emphasis — obviously Josh did the third down meetings last year,” Evans said. “We were very locked in to the games [as a result of] those third down meetings. We knew what was coming.”
So, Evans said, the Bucs similarly will be locked in not just on third downs, but all downs this fall.
Joe didn’t get the impression the Bucs weren’t locked in on first and second downs. But it seems like the Bucs were laser-focused on third downs. And a large reason, per Evans, was Grizzard.
Bucs Mike Evans says new OC Josh Grizzard is smart and always prepared.

So good to hear this, thanks Joe! Sounds promising.

I’m excited. Sounds like improvements can be made on first and second downs. I’m really interested in seeing what the three-headed rushing attack looks like from the former passing coordinator’s POV.

It’s just a really smart move and perfect for Baker.
This team should hit the ground running with shinny new players.

This would be a good time for the leaders of the team (Mike, Baker, Lavonte, and Vita) to question why their record was so bad in close games. That’s the truth. 8 losses in the season, 6 were some form of Bucs beating Bucs. Address that and change that.

Good to hear! We have a win-win OC for the team.

And I do apologize for the third down commitment from our defensive side of the ball. Another good year wasted not being able to get off the field to give the ball back to our offense. Draft well Jason, draft well.

You mean Boy Wonder Coen who remade NFL offense was not doing it???

It seems like there are several stories going on regarding Coen.
Perhaps it’s more of a relief in the locker room that he is gone.
Jax isn’t known for having a strong track record of HC hires.

We know Baker can throw…commit to the run…then play action…
establish respect through the run…it will, keep Baker fresh for
consistent throws….

screw Coen, he lacks the character to have staying power as a HC in this league. As for Gizzard, this is a giant roll of the dice. Statistically, it’s just unlikely the keep replacing good offensive coordinators with better ones… he doesn’t have to be better than Coen, just close.
