Creeping Ben Bredeson Hatred

January 31st, 2025

Bucs LG Ben Bredeson.

Joe has noticed over the past week or so that some Bucs fans are anxious to dump left guard Ben Bredeson. Joe doesn’t see why.

When it comes to offensive line play, Joe’s standards and many fans’ standards are like the difference between awful comedian Kathy Griffin and famed ring card girl Sydney Thomas.

But it isn’t just some Bucs fans who want to run off Bredeson. Jordan Dajani of CBS thinks the Bucs should let Bredeson walk, too. And replace him with — wait for it — a Bears guard!

Bears left guard Teven Jenkins could be a replacement for Ben Bredeson when it comes to improving Tampa Bay’s rushing attack.

Someone needs to tip off this Dajani. We aren’t talking the 2022 Bucs or the 2023 Bucs, which had the absolute worst rushing game in the NFL. This past season’s Bucs had the No. 4 rushing attack in the league.

Hello?

There is a reason rookie QB Caleb Williams was running for his life. The Bears have an atrocious offensive line. The Bucs had one of the best.

So this guy Dajani is of the mind the Bucs need to run off one of their starters to replace him with a dude from one of the league’s worst offensive lines.

Brilliant!

The fact this Dajani thinks the Bucs’ rushing attack needs to improve (when the pass defense is just horrible), well, that premise tells Joe that Dajani either didn’t watch the Bucs this past year or is simply out to lunch.

C’mon, CBS, you can do better!

As for Bredeson? He’s solid. He’s likely inexpensive. And he started on one of the better lines in the game on one of the best offenses in the game. Joe doesn’t understand the problem here.

(Believe it or not, the free agency dinner bell rings for Bredeson and he rest of the NFL in less than six weeks.)

Bredeson was solid and should be re-signed especially with the cap value that can be placed towards defense.

Joe makes sense, lets leave well enough alone with the O-Line. We have so many other needs on defense. Let Kevin Carberry keep up his magic. Bredeson is adequate and we had a great run game last season.

If Licht comes up with an improvement great. Whatever. That’s one area I have total trust.

  5. Cometowin2 Says:

He is probably the weak link on the line but that’s just because of how good the rest of the line is. He’s a decent player who stayed extremely healthy. He should be back with a reasonable raise. Can’t afford more than that. Hope Klein and Hainsey push him to be even better.

    Bingo.

An open letter to those national media types who comment on the Bucs.

Do your freaking home work before you write your nonsense.

We in Tampa are not idiots who follow every word you write like it was gospel. We know football and we know our players and coaches (Most of the coaches anyway) You only make yourselves look stupid when you do this… I will just mail it in journalism stuff.

    Geez!

    Go Bucs

  8. adam from ny Says:

sign him and see if you can possibly bring in maybe opeta as well…

    same as last year…

otherwise let the line be, this year

you’ve got klein, haggard, the giant german fella, etc

hopefully hainsey the super sub too

  9. Bucs Guy Says:

The only thing the Bucs should be doing to the Oline is bringing in competition and depth. There are higher priorities on the D.

  10. Aqualung Says:

Jason got this too. No worries. Idiuts be as idjuts am.

Which University has more combatants featured in upcoming Super Bowl than any other University? Alabama? Georgia? No, the answer is the University of Oklahoma! That being said draft Billy Bowman Jr. and Danny Stutsman. Bowman can play anywhere in the secondary and man he has a love for the game. He’d fit right in with the team. Stutsman is an inside linebacker who is gonna play somewhere so let’s not let it be against us. Both guys should be available in the third or fourth round. I’m not knocking Alabama and Georgia. Let’s snatch a couple players from those teams too.

These absurd “National Takes” show the true value of JBF!

Local guys who eat, live, and breathe everything Bucs are obviously light years ahead in terms of “understanding” what is actually happening at OBP.

This is why virtually 100% of my Bucs/NFL news comes from JBF and posters here. I sometimes scour the web for factual info but “opinions”? Nah!

  13. Kenton Smith Says:

Lo and behold we’ve got an offensive line that is starting to play with some swagger and we’re talking about letting Bredeson go? That would be a mistake as Barton benefited greatly having a seasoned NFL center next to him. Bredeson may not be an all pro but he’s smart, tough, and he can play center if needed.

  14. PowerOfPewter Says:

Bredeson and Barton were the weak links on the OLine. Barton was a rookie, reasonable to assume he’ll be much improved his 2nd year. Bredeson might show some improvement. There were a couple other FA G brought in, that had no impact ( 1 was on IR the full season). All together there’s about $6M tied up at LG. Hainsey is likely to not be resigned. I’d say let all them go, except resign Bredeson. Draft a G/C about Round 4 to be a backup, provide a bit of competition , and possibly develop into an eventual starter. My theory is that you need to draft an OLman nearly every draft… always losing them to retirement, injury, or FAcy. Also need to draft some WR depth. Most of the draft needs to be on defense to plug all the holes.

  15. ek Says:

Wait… are you seriously suggesting Ben Bredeson is a better player than Teven Jenkins?

Jenkins was the best player on a bad line (that looked even worse because of the rookie QB holding the ball and taking sacks he shouldn’t – and let’s be honest, probably some pretty crappy playcalling too). Bredeson was the worst player on a good line. The two aren’t close.

That said, it’s not good value for the $$ I would imagine – Jenkins will command a decent paycheck. Bredeson likely significantly less, and it’s an area of strength for the Bucs. No need to spend silly money on a right guard.

  16. Ugotrobbed Says:

What else would you expect from clueless CBS??

  17. heyjude Says:

Makes sense, Joe. He is still valuable.

And as we have seen many times, he could go somewhere else and end up being their star player.

  18. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Crazy no-brainer to keep BB. The big question is can we keep Bob Hainsey? Starting center…. yuck. On my bench….. yes please!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Too many other fish to fry. Don’t fix what ain’t broke.

  20. StormyInFl Says:

One of the biggest keys to an effective oline is continuity. Keeping Bredeson does that. Plugging a new guy in there will risk taking the oline time to gel. Again.

You can’t have pro bowlers at the every position. You need those solid starter types, which Bredeson is.

  21. JimBobBuc Says:

If you believe PFF grades (a big IF), Bredeson played about the same with the Bucs as he did with the Giants. So I’m guessing that his price to re-sign may not go up much, so I definitely would re-sign him. In camp, he was very slightly better than Opeta so I’m thinking Carbs will have Breds and Opeta compete again. Breds big plus was his availability, every snap.

Klein played RG in school and in the limited snaps this year he was at RG. However, if Klein gets stronger and much better, maybe Carbs will give him a try at LG?

    Thank you!

  23. Tampabay97 Says:

I’d like to see the Bucs draft a left guard in round 2 or 3. I think the way we have built our line with Wirfs, Goedeke, Mauch, and Barton is the way to go. We can clearly develop talent and drafting them keeps our cap hits lower. Brendon will cost significantly more than a round 2 guard to keep and he was the weak link in our line last year, not worth it in my opinion.

In terms of draft needs I know we need a middle linebacker, maybe corner, and edge rusher as well, but I think you take 2 of those positions in round 1 and 3 and pay a free agent for the other.

  24. Beeej Says:

He is slightly above average, will get a little better over time. You can’t have a pro bowl player at every single position, you could never afford to pay them all

  25. Lou. Says:

    @Joe —

Bredeson WAS a dude off one of the worst lines in the league. The year before we signed him Bredeson played for the woeful Giants.

Face it: he has serious physical limitations with the short arms thing. But the Bucs have fatal deficiencies — pass defense, edge pass rushing, and inside linebacker. So I’m more than willing to take the Bredeson in the hand rather than two or three Omamehs in the bush (for a blast from the Bucs past).

  26. toopanca Says:

Nothing against Bredeson, but the reporting was that Sua Opeta was winning the battle in camp before he was injured.

If Sua has recovered, he shouldn’t cost more than last year. Maybe Sua wins round two of the camp battle, or maybe he provides inexpensive depth if Hainsey is not resigned.

And, the guard signed last year may have a shot.

  27. David Says:

Ridiculous. Keep all the starters and draft back ups who potentially become starters
Absolutely no reason to go after a lineman in free agency

  28. Kazz Says:

Jenkins made a great transition from tackle a few years back, but has been awful the last two seasons

  29. Drunkinybor Says:

I guess you would know better than me. I dont understand any hatred of any of our line. Sounds like the miserable people that have to find something to hate to distract themselves from all their self loathing. You know the steering wheel punching, know it all, gossip queens at work, just finding anything to be angry about that day. ” Who made the coffee yuck. Probably joe, you know he’s got a son in jail, yeah and Melissa our boss. Doneone told me they got together at the Christmas party. What a sl.t right. Ewee this coffee is disgusting ammiright? Right? Whoever made this needs to be fired. OMG and that one free agent lineman from the Giants we picked up last season sucks. I heard he’s terrible and we shouldn’t resign him because we can get a cheaper guy who’s way better like Carl Nix just get him unretired. And this coffee is hideous the donuts are stale. Mike Glennon if coached right would be way better than baker mayfield. Baker needs to go! He’s holding back Trask. Trask is going to leave and be Steve Young all over. Oh hi Melissa your the best. Joe best coffee ever. Bye. Oh I just hate both of them.”
