“You Can See Something Was Wrong With Him”

November 13th, 2024

So Buccaneers cornerback Zyon McCollum left Sunday’s gut-punch loss to San Francisco with a hamstring injury.

He had an MRI yesterday.

Joe has no word on the results and is almost scared to ask.

Fellow starting cornerback Jamel Dean has been out for weeks with a bad hamstring. There is hope at One Buc Palace that Dean will practice next week and return soon after, but if the Bucs end up replacing McCollum with Dean, then that’s no upgrade to the porous secondary.

Per Todd Bowles’ comments on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week, it seems McCollum tweaked his hamstring during Sunday’s game and played through it for several snaps.

That may have cost the Bucs.

“Zyon played tough but he didn’t tackle like he typically tackles. So you can see something was wrong with him,” Bowles said. “I think he missed about three tackles in the ballgame. If you take away that, he had the two penalties. So it wasn’t one of his better games, but he still made some plays for us.”

McCollum did do some good things. For example, in the photo above, the end result was him breaking up that pass. But McCollum sure didn’t look right for a stretch in that game.

Don’t get it wrong. Joe’s not saying McCollum 100 percent should have spoken up and come out of the game sooner. Maybe that’s the case, but Joe won’t argue that rookie Tyrek Funderburk would have done better if he replaced McCollum earlier.

Bowles was harsh on Funderburk on the team’s radio network, calling his play against San Francisco “timid.”

Imagine Todd Bowles calling someone else “timid”…

Seriously….what is with all the hamstring injuries on this team…or is it just me? I would think our trainers would be sweating at the moment. Doesn’t this issue point directly at them?

  3. John Sinclear Says:

Garb – Totally agree. There’s a training or strengthening issue that needs to be looked at. Probably league-wise. Maybe due to the reduced contact in training camp and practice?

  4. Buc4evr Says:

This team always seems to have more injuries to starters than any other team. Why?

  5. JimBobBuc Says:

Last year I thought the Bucs were fortunate with injuries. Did the training staff change? All these guys need to be actively stretching their hamstrings and calfs on the sidelines between series.

  6. TF Says:

I think the injuries may be because players no longer play preseason. Shortened preseason. Less time where the players have “game speed” conditioning. I know the argument well they can ramp up the intensity during joint practices etc. BS.

  7. First Last Says:

Sounds like we need to play full speed during pre-season because then we can figure out if these players need to go on IR and if so can we spin up a practice squad guy in the mean time. Otherwise we have fresh meat getting beat in the first couple games of the season.

  8. Derek Says:

We need a complete overhaul of this staff except for Liam Coen and a few others.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

That’s on strength and conditioning, not trainers.

    All aboard the excuse train.

I think Zyon has been doing a great job this season. His break-out year and unfortunately now a hamstring injury.

Agree with the comments about so many hamstring injuries this year. It has a lot to do with excessive straining too.

  12. BallHawk75 Says:

If only we had a defensive minded coach to implement the needed changes.

    Wait……

Insert the Price is Right Losing Horn here.

Didn’t learn a thing from Mike’s injury. Sad.another bad decision Todd.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs looked even slower than normal to me during the 49ers game. We do have quite a few guys with hamstring injuries, knee injuries, ankle issues, etc. They’re out there playing, but some of them don’t look to be even close to 100%.

Every team has to deal with injuries though. Admittedly the Bucs seem to be having more than their share this season. And it is a lot easier to deal with injuries if you have quality depth. Oh well, at least the schedule’s supposed to get easier after the BYE.

  15. BucU Says:

Zyon was playing great. But at this point it’s just another injury in a season with a long line of injuries. The NFL sucks since the collective bargaining agreement turned training camp into teen summer camp.

  16. drdneastup Says:

That’s par for the course foor this team. are backup are so bad we play our starters injured if we know it or not. They have a history of it now.

I believe we lead the league in hamstring injuries…. every freaking year

  18. Dave Pear Says:

LOL, I read the headline and thought the article was about the head coich.

  19. Esteban85 Says:

Injuries have ruined this season from the beginning

  20. Bucswin? Says:

How about some tb12 pliability for this teams hamstrings.. There are modalities to prevent these injuries. Contact injuries i get, it’s the nfl. But hamstrings locking up and tearing at this rate. Someone’s notnot doing their job. Another thing on the head scratch list. Who is running this place? Team staff/coaches should/(will?) be gutted this off season. It’s a BUCS life.

  21. SenileSenior Says:

The team probably does not have the same quality of conditioning and sports science as when BA was in charge. That is my guess, garbs65.
