Mike Edwards Returns

November 14th, 2024

He’s back.

So the Bucs once again reached back into their history trying to find some magic. So far this year, all that reaching has done is give the Bucs a rash.

Versatile safety Mike Edwards, 28, was signed this afternoon, the Bucs announced. The 2019 Bucs third-round pick was grabbed off waivers after the woeful Titans released him.

Edwards also was released by the Bills earlier this month.

In March, the Bucs brought back safety Jordan Whitehead and everyone from the highest reaches of One Buc Palace to the drunkest of Bucs fans in Lithia dive bars were giddy with the signing. But Whitehead’s second stint with the Bucs hasn’t gone so well.

Through 10 games, Whitehead has been far from the bone-crunching safety the Bucs had when they won the Super Bowl in the 2020 season.

So combining how the Bucs may have buyer’s remorse with Whitehead, and how Edwards was cut twice this month, once from a truly rotten team, Joe wonders if reaching back for a productive player from years ago is a repeat of buyer’s remorse.

Joe hopes not. Edwards was one of Joe’s favorite players.

Joe sure hopes Todd Bowles can bring the magic out in the former ballhawk again.

    Who’s next, Sean Murphy Bunting

  2. Waterboy Says:

Can’t be much worse than what they already have on defense.

  3. Stillabucsfan Says:

Maybe he’ll tell the corners to stop playing so far off 🤞🏻

  4. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Since we seem to have an opposite effect on players maybe he comes and plays great for us! We can only hope but then again Blowles is our coach so no bueno on that

  5. Al121976 Says:

    Hell yeah!!!!!!!!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Nothing ventured nothing gained…

  7. Kieran Says:

Maybe give Revis or Talib a workout 🙄

  8. Jamesrunningwilder Says:

They should bring in Linebacker Tyrel Dodson, whom the Seahawks just cut. He was their leading tackler. That being said, I’m sure there’s a reason why they let go of their most productive Linebacker. It certainly couldn’t hurt to bring to bring him in for a tryout.

  9. Darin Says:

    Grab a former HC Licht

  10. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Hey, the Bucs could have had Devin White and his 29 PFF score.

  11. BA' S Red Pen Says:

So we’re fixing our poor tackling secondary by bringing in a dude that has zero interest in making tackles, wonderful.

  12. Hearty Dikerson Says:

God forbid Licht and Bowles broaden their horizons and step outside their comfort zone with some new blood. This obsession with “bringing back the gang” and ignoring the other hundreds of NFL players is clearly not working.

Stop always playing it safe. Try something different. Try bringing in someone you’re not familiar with. Just maybe a fresh face will breathe some new life into this lifeless defense.

  13. ATLBUC Says:

I would have thought that they would have brought Shaq back

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Hearty Dikerson

Licht is probably hesitant to make a big commitment. A new coach will mean new faces.

  15. Hearty Dikerson Says:

    @ Buccaneer Bonzai

In seriousness, yeah that seems valid and I’m hoping that’s the case. No single big name defenseman can fix a scheme where players are mandated to stay 15 yards away from WRs at all times.

This move just speaks to Bowles’ conservative-to-a-fault nature that he’s never willing to step outside his comfort zone and try something new.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bowles is burying himself.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

This is a good signing. No matter how far Edwards has fallen, Lovie will be sure to coach him down even further, to the playing level of an au gratin potato. Don’t worry, Bucs fans. Coich will be sure average yards against and points against continue to climb.

  18. DBS Says:

We don’t need any new players? Now go find Receiver and LB.

  19. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I have to feel we are going to start seeing 3 safeties in time package for known passing situations

  20. #1bucsfan Says:

I think the main thing yall are forgetting is if they bring in anyone there’s a steep learning curve to the defense. Edwards has played in it and has done well but something is said about whitehead and look how that has worked out. I understand the signing bring in help who knows the defense already. Time will tell and we do need help. I’m happy with it. Don’t know what’s up with whitehead but we need him and also Winfield hasn’t played anywhere close to last year. Still time to get it together

  21. Derek Says:

Dude you guys haven’t even put out a podcast in reaction to the game last weekend. So inconsistent

  22. DBS Says:

Winfield is either playing injured or he got his payday. Just like Carlton Davis .

  23. Evo Says:

I like this.. hes great in zone coverage. Which we apparently struggle at

  24. View from 132 Says:

Look forward to seeing Donnie Abraham and Mark Cotney return too.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

Bring back Rod “Toast” Jones. He’d be perfect in Lovie’s defense.

  26. Tony Says:

    @Viewfrom132
    @Kieran

Some of the older players on D would probably still be playing better than some of them right now.

  27. Durango 95 Says:

Only weakness is his communication skills. No worries though, Bowles will have that fixed in no time.

  28. Curse of Gruden Says:

    What, Sabby wasn’t available?

  29. garro Says:

    What took so long?

Contract? Never quite agreed with letting him out of town anyway.

    Go Bucs!

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Algo must not like Rod Toast Jones

  31. adam from ny Says:

when here, he was a definite ball hawk…

so maybe catch a little lightning in a bottle and fill in some field gaps………..possibly

  32. Tony Says:

Just wait until they resign Ryan Neal & Chris Conte.

  33. Dr. Bucenstein Says:

I guess next move is to bring back Devin White, can’t be worse.

  34. Tony Says:

    @Dr. Bucenstein

Actually yes it can. They bring back Antonio.

  35. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

‘Smitty’ are you listening? I know you gotta be out there somewhere….. just sayin.

  36. heyjude Says:

Edwards has been on a few good teams, so they saw something good with him. I am glad to see him come back to the Bucs. We might be pleasantly surprised.

  37. Vanessa Anne Says:

Edwards was an unsung ballhawk when he was here before.

I thought letting him go was a bad move.

Only time will tell, but bringing him back may provide the spark that ignites Winfield and Whitehead.

They were a dangerous trio a few years ago. Let’s see if they can do it again!

  38. Bobby M. Says:

Expect communication to be an immediate issue

  39. BucaneroJim Says:

Don’t need to bring back an ex-Buc, because he is familiar with our defense. Every player, on every team knows our defensive scheme.

  40. BucU Says:

We’ve turned into the Carolina Panthers. Thanks Licht and Bowles!!

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

At this point we have nothing to lose so I like the singing!!

  42. Pewter Power Says:

Uh we were excited when whitehead came back also, why were there still communication issues? This base has way too much faith in Bowles because it ain’t the players it’s the coaches…… 2 strong minded offensive head coaches 2 super bowls trophies! I’m just saying it out loud. Glazers don’t ever hire a defensive coach again

  43. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Sadly, he’ll probably be here just for the next 7 games. The new HC will have to completely overhaul the defense and completely change the culture.

  44. Kgh4life Says:

As long as the Bucs have these secondary coaches on staff the bucs coverage is going to be horrible.

  45. Orange Republic Says:

Welcome home two time Super Bowl Champion Mike Edwards! I was hoping Bucs would make this move. Dude had 7 tackles in the Super Bowl 9 months ago and now he can’t play?!

When Bowles has three interchangeable safeties on the field the Bucs D is downright dirty. Very hard for any offense to sort out who is what. If the O can’t ID who is FS/SS/nickel, it makes it very difficult to get the ball out quickly much less get desirable matchups. I don’t think anyone scored a TD on the Winfield/Edwards/Logan Ryan backfield in 2022 until Ryan went down.

This might quietly be a huge move.

  46. Orange Republic Says:

Poor Daniel Jones is going to have a really bad day on November 24th and doesn’t even know it yet.

  47. unbelievable Says:

Whitehead is the most disappointing Buc for me this season.

(Not KJ Britt, cuz I already knew he sucked before the season started)

  48. snookman9 Says:

I heard sabby piscitelli has been training.

  49. Jeff Says:

Bucs close to resigning Rod Toast Jones.

  50. Buccup Says:

Welcome back, Edward’s! I’m happy about this.

  51. Baking with Coen Says:

    Let the magic begin!!!
Let’s Tuck, Buck, White and Bake!!!!
