Todd Bowles = Tom Osborne

May 2nd, 2024

Legend.

In ancient football times, also known as the 1990s, the University of Nebraska won three national championships in four years.

Their head coach was Tom Osborne, who retired after the 1997 season, his final championship campaign.

Osborne was very much about his defined processes for recruiting and coaching, as well as player character, intelligence and communication. He was an even guy, not a believer in manipulation or fiery intimidation.

He was, per Bucs general manager Jason Licht, a lot like Todd Bowles.

Licht made that case yesterday during his visit to SiriusXM NFL Radio. He said Bowles is super steady in his approach and Licht credited his head coach for getting Tampa Bay through and out of their 4-7 start last season to finish 9-8.

It sounded like Licht beleives Bowles nearly single-handedly saved the Bucs.

“One of the greatest things about Todd is he’s the same person every day,” Licht said. “… With the entire team, his messaging is always very consistent. When he does get a little fired up, it gets the juices flowing from everybody because it’s a little bit out of his element because he’s a very steady person. My college coach was very similar in Tom Osborne at Nebraska. … He was a great coach and it reminds me of him. And [Bowles] got us through some dark times last year when we were starting to slide off the rails there at the middle of the season. And I think it’s his leadership that got us back on track.”

So there you have it.

Savior Todd Bowles is in the house.

I like Bowles’ laid-back personality – a bit like Dungy. Hope he does well this season.

  2. D-Rok Says:

Of all the things I’ve seen Coach Bowles do while with Bucs, I give him the most credit for turning around the slide last season. It’s not easy for a team to change like that, and as always, credit starts at the top.

  3. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I’ve been giving Bowles the benefit of the doubt. I much prefer Bruce Arians’ way of coaching, but his last team, the ’21 Bucs, also laid some eggs even when they won (remember how we almost lost to the Jets? We should’ve blown that horrible team out.)

I’ve come to realize that it’s impossible to motivate a team to play its best for 17 games. You are going to lay SOME eggs.

It seems like the players like and respect Bowles and play hard for him. With an upgraded offensive line, pass rush off the edge, and an upgraded third option at wide receiver, maybe, just maybe, we can get to 12 wins again. If so, I’ll be completely sold on Bowles.

If the rookies don’t pan out and we go 8-9, then maybe it’s the talent, or maybe it’s Bowles.

If all the rookies look AMAZING and we go 8-9, then Bowles will probably be fired.

  4. Cometowin2 Says:

I just wish he would be more aggressive on both pass defense, offensive play calling and better at time management.

  5. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with Win. Too slow to adjust pass defense strategy when current one is failing.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

Joseph are you really asking us if we remember the game where A Brown danced shirtless through the endzone?
Of course we SHOULD have blown them out.
Hmmm. I wonder why we didn’t?

  7. BillyBucco Says:

I can’t help but wonder what would have happened with A Brown if an even keeled T Bowles was the coach and didn’t get his buttons pushed to the point of saying, “ Get the Hell out of here”, which of course the dumb Brown did exactly.

  8. NYbucsfan Says:

    He Stinks!!!

  9. JimBobBuc Says:

I have really never heard an adequate explanation on why the Buc’s offense cratered immediately after the bye last year. Coen needs to figure that out and fix it this year.

I don’t have a strong opinion about Bowles, but I do wish he would make personnel decisions a little more quickly: More YaYa and less JTS last year. Remove coaches that aren’t producing: run game coach Harold Goodwin was kept too long.

  10. Tucker Says:

Brown was going to boil over didn’t matter who the coach was that’s just him.

  11. 2023 Surprised the Hell out of me Says:

hope he gets the clock management figured out …

  12. BakerFan Says:

Osborne running the fumblerooskie, 1984 Orange Bowl National Championship game. 20 yards out TOUCHDOWN!!! Classic play with balls of steal to call that.

Osborne was great, even though I am a Sooner fan.

  13. Larrd Says:

A 4-7 start sucks. A 9-8 record is mediocre. I don’t think Nebraska sucked and was mediocre when Osborne was there.

  14. BucsFan55 Says:

    Time Management is his downfall.

  17. Buccos Says:

Yes Bowles is a great football coach. It doesn’t matter if it’s defensive coordinator or head coach. Bowles is the man. The league will transition back to being a defensive league. It just swings back and forth depending on who wins the Super Bowl. No he isn’t a great offensive mind but that’s ok. Hopefully Coen will be able to handle that. Bowles is a steady force who can guide his team through all sorts of weather. Whatever happened with the Jets doesn’t count against him. They were a completely dysfunctional organization at that time. They probably still are

  18. Dave Pear Says:

Well that explains a lot. The vintage 1980s offensive philosophy, zero energy starts, flat performances in crucial games. What was successful in the 1980s in college always works in the NFL in the 2020s.

At least hire a full time Defensive Coordinator, Todd. Jezus Chrust.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

John W. Harding…well dayum dude. Tell us how you really feel next time.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

I dunno, I read that he’s injury prone and his love of baseball might be a distraction.

The stuff some maroons write, LOL.

I love this pick and the more I read from the pros, the better it looks.

Hopefully Todd Bowles is no Tom Osborne. Osborne did not win a national championship until his 22nd season at Nebraska. And, he did so by starting dirtbag running back Lawrence Phillips,
    ……………..
Lawrence Phillips…. we don’t have to worry about him anymore.

If it means winning a Super Bowl, start all the dirt bags we can find.

Amazing how many people out there claim to want a good wholesome white meat babyface team out there, then when they get one and it goes 2-15, they’re not buying tickets to cheer on the good guys, they’re demanding to be handed someones head.

  24. JUAN Says:

I work with Cowboys fans and they say fans on Cowboys websites are calling for the team to trade for Kyle Trask: they don’t like backup Trey Lance.

  25. JUAN Says:

    @ Rod Munch

    Some people have morals.

  26. Dave Pear Says:

No one has ever accused Cowboys fans of being very bright. This “trade for Trashk” nonsense just proves that you can’t fix stupid.

  27. Stanglassman Says:

Last year Todd made a lot strides in his game-day coaching. Being more aggressive, playing more to win than not to lose. Even his defensive pay calling was better. Not predictably blitzing when offensives knew it was coming. The growth was real. I just hope he doesn’t revert to his old ways but instead continues to get better.

  28. Buccup Says:

Osborne was an elite head coach. The Bucs late season run last year had just as much to do with the OC as the head coach, if not more. Let’s not be too hasty to anoint Bowles as ring of honor material. Let’s see if he can get close to the 13 conference crowns that Osborne got first.

  29. JUAN Says:

    @ Dave Pear

I have read quite a few of your comments and you definitely suffer from an irrational and unhealthy animus toward Kyle Trask. Do tell us, how long have you been a big Seminoles fan?

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

I certainly have become a fan of Coach Bowles.
Two NFC South Championships in a row isnt an accident.
Lets hope he can get a 3rd!

  31. Capt.Tim Says:

Man, I sure would hate to lose Kyle Trask!
He is an integral part of the Bucs future. Absolutely essential to the team
    No way we trade him

Ok, 2 first round picks. Keep showing the league how smart you are Jerry!
    Keep collecting all those Lombardis!

  32. Gipper Says:

That is a fair comparison. Bowles is even keel and treats his players like men. They obviously respond to him. Baker Mayfield leads the league in number of head coaches had. My guess is Baker thinks Bowles is the best of the bunch including LA Coach McVey.

  33. Crickett Baker Says:

I think some of you forget how much into baseball was Patrick Mahomes…

  34. BucsFan since '96 Says:

We can’t really evaluate Trask until we see him play with the first team offense should he ever get that opportunity.

He greatly improved last preseason over the previous season and demonstrated he is at least a capable backup. If he continues to improve he might eventually have some of his haters eating crow.

  35. SlyPirate Says:

I’m not a fan of Bowles.

His late game decision making cost the Bucs 2-3 games, including the playoff game against Detroit. Hopefully they’ve learned or at least added a strategy coach to assist moving forward.

  36. NCBuc Says:

    @ Gipper
I’m pretty sure Baker is just glad he had a decent year in a prove it deal year. It got him paid. But I really don’t think trying to say he prefers Bowels over McVay would be realistic. He would’ve learned much more from McVay.

  37. Davenport Says:

The real Bowles will show up this year. Minimum 10 wins, or he’s gotta go

So, “JUAN.” Using all caps in your stage name must make you feel stronger or something.

I’m a Gator, 76-81. I love the Gators. I just don’t watch through orange and brew glazed eyes.

Trask processes the action on the field at the speed of smell. His pocket presence (?) and escapabiliyy is reminiscent of Mike Glennon. Only Trask won’t make what Glennon has made in the NFL. Now he has to learn another new system so he can figure out who the first read is and stare him down until he gets sacked or throws a pick.

No one expects a raging Trashk homer to understand, that he sucks even for objective Gator fans.

Do they? Or do they just say that so other simpletons will praise them and tell them what good people they are.

Anywho, Warren Sapp isn’t Mr Morals, and I don’t remember Bucs fans demanding the Raiders be given the SB trophy.

The NFL is escapism, you watch the game to be entrained, and no one is entertained by a bunch of good guys giving 110% when they’re losing to a team full of bad guys who are fun to watch and win.

Riiiiight. Just as no Seminole would constantly “Trashk” a young FSU quarterback who hasn’t played yet, neither would any Gator “Trashk” a young UF quarterback who hasn’t played yet. I’ve seen you “Trashk” Kyle Trask in articles here that have absolutely nothing to do with Kyle Trask. You bring him up ALL. THE. TIME. OUT. OF. NOWHERE. And you do so because he lives in your head … because as an FSU fan you have a troubling deep seated animus toward him. I recommend you seek help.
