BSPN: Ryan Tannehill’s Best Fit Is With The Bucs

May 23rd, 2024

Backup gig floated.

Well, at least this is, um, interesting.

The Bucs just signed Baker Mayfield to a nice contract to be their quarterback for at least the next two seasons. The team loves him. His teammates love him.

Now Joe is no fan of veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill. At best he’s meh, average. He’s a perfect quarterback for the types of coaches who still believe you win with defense only.

Yeah, like Mike Vrabel. Unemployed Mike Vrabel. How far did Vrabel get with this guy Tannehill?

BSPN’s X’s and O’s analyst Matt Bowen seems to think the perfect fit for Tannehill, who is still looking for work, is the Bucs. Joe has no idea why Bowen would think this unless he thinks very little of Mayfield or thinks Mayfield is bound to get hurt and miss playing time.

Oh, and Bowen isn’t sold on Kyle Trask.

My sense is Tannehill will wait for an opportunity to open up during camp, but if we are looking at potential team/scheme fits, then the Bucs work. Kyle Trask and John Wolford are the options on the depth chart behind starter Baker Mayfield as of now, and a healthy Tannehill would benefit from the expected heavy doses of play-action in the pass game under new coordinator Liam Coen. In 10 games played with the Titans last season, Tannehill completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,616 yards, 4 touchdown throws and 7 interceptions. Put Tampa Bay down as a team to watch with Tannehill this summer.

Now would Joe take this Tannehill as a backup? Perhaps. But Joe is not sure the Bucs are the right place. Hell, there are enough vocal Bucs fans who clearly are not believers in Mayfield. They would immediately jump on the bandwagon demanding Tannehill start the second Mayfield throws an incompletion.

Does Todd Bowles want to introduce that sort of drama into the Bucs’ locker room and within the walls of One Buc Palace? He’s a firm Mayfield supporter.

On paper, Joe could see how this could make sense. In reality, bringing in Tannehill would likely do more harm than good.

He’s not a buccaneer man lol

  2. Boss Says:

we should have gotten him before he went to TN

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

Tannehill would be a massive upgrade over John Wolford.

  4. JimBobBuc Says:

Wolford knows the offense but he didn’t play well for the Rams. I’d rather get depth at OLB, ILB, and RB than QB. It doesn’t seem to be in Licht’s MO to get players at the final roster cuts.

  5. heyjude Says:

No, we are not the team for him. His stats have fallen badly through 2023 and we need other positions first.

  6. Durango 95 Says:

Rumor has it the Falcons might be interested. 🙂

  7. Buchen61 Says:

Backup QB not an area of concern….other than being reported by the libtards at ESPN don’t even see the revalence

  8. Buchen61 Says:

    Durango I’m still laughing

    Ha!

  10. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Must be a slow news day for Bowen 0.0 chance that happens

  11. heyjude Says:

Thank you for the laugh, Durango! Too funny.

  12. Marky Mark Says:

These analysts were so wrong about Baker they are hoping and praying he fails so tbey can be right. Schadenfreude.

  13. Buchen61 Says:

Marky Mark I am under the same opinion

  14. garro Says:

“4 touchdown throws and 7 interceptions”

Come on man! If Bowles doesn’t have any confidence in Trask because his job is on the line? 4 and 7? Come on man!

Yet another 4 letter clown with a keyboard, who refused to do his homework.

    Go Bucs!

  15. Scott Says:

We are scraping money together just to be able to pay our draft picks. This guys is clueless.

  16. garro Says:

    Does anynoe know Vinny’s number?

(Said in my Jason Licht voice)

    🙂

    Go Bucs!

  17. BillyBucco Says:

    Who is Bowen?

  18. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’m fine with the Bucs going with Trask and Wolford as the backups. Hopefully they won’t need to play either one.

  19. BillyBucco Says:

I think the Bucs would have already made the move for a QB like Tannehill.
Only way he becomes a Buc is if we suffer a major injury to Baker and Trask just doesn’t know the playbook. This is clearly coming from a guy who just doesn’t trust Baker yet.

  20. Joe Says:

    Who is Bowen?

Former NFL player. Co-hosts NFL Matchups on BSPN at times. D-3 and high school coach in the Chicago burbs. Been with BSPN for years.

His X’s and O’s are pretty good. His player personnel calls, not so much.

  21. SlyPirate Says:

If Baker goes down I’d rather roll with Trask.

  22. bucnjim Says:

That’s what we need a 4 TD 7 Int QB! Good laugh for Thursday morning!

  23. Baking with Evans Says:

Latest rumor Bucs trading Trask and Wooooford for Jameis Winston – Americas Best Clipboard holder. lol

  24. All_da_way Says:

    Nope.

Stick with what the Bucs have. Mayfield, Trask and Wolford.

BSPN just doesn’t understand roster construction.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

I’m not an advocate for signing Ryan Tannehill as a backup (we’re in good shape), but not because he’s a ‘bad QB’. He’s actually been a fairly decent QB during all of his 11 NFL seasons.

o Averaged 64.3% completion rate over those years, with 1 season over 70% & 6 seasons over 65%.
o Averaged almost 3,200 passing yards per season over those 11 years, with 2 seasons over 4,000 yards.
o Only averaged 20 passing TDs per year, but in fairness the 2 teams he QB’d did run quite a bit (Dolphins & Titans).
o Averaged 10 INTs per season which resulted in a respectable 2.4% INT percentage (comparable to Baker’s 2.6% career average).

Looking at his last year with the Titans, when ‘Tannehill completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,616 yards, 4 touchdown throws and 7 interceptions’ it looks like the reason for that is that Tannehill got sacked a bunch in those 10 games (32 times for a sack rate of 12.2%). Wow, kinda tells me his OLine sucked to let him get sacked 1 out of every 8 times he dropped back. Maybe that’s 1 reason why Tennessee went 6-11 & Vrabel got fired?

  26. Buca Dawg Says:

I vote no to Tannerhill, I’m not a fan of our current depth but att least they know the playbook

  27. Buchen61 Says:

Baker-Trask- Wolford if it ain’t broke don’t fix it

  28. Alexandre Nascimento Says:

What the Sage thinks about it? He is always harping on backup QB quality…

  29. catcard202 Says:

Tanny would demand over $5M for a BU QB role…Bucs already have a cheaper version of Tanny on the bench in Traskcan.

Between Woeful & Traskcan…Bucs are set at clip board holding duties, as Baker has proven he will play w/ 1 arm tied behind his back/hanging as a loose limb. (See CLE 2021)

If either BU QB has to take significant snaps…Bowles is already skilled at losing with anyone under center…Why spend extra coin for clip board duties or assured L’s if he plays???

IMO, Tanny is 1000% not what the Bucs need, nor worth the coin it would take…If the FO wants to add a BU piece…Need to focus on other position groups. (TE, ILB, DT & WR could all use a depth pieces that might actually see the field in a rotational or ST roles)

  30. sdm5821 Says:

Last year it was said numerous times, by numerous players, coaches that The quarterback that had the best grasp of the offense was Wolford. He was/is like an additional coach and for whatever reason, probably communicates, explains, teaches the offense better because he is an active player.

Just my opinion, but I believe the reason Trask showed marked improvement over his previous two years, was that he had Wolford working with him. Same with Baker to some degree. I hope Wolford never sees the field during the season and playoffs, but I wouldn’t replace him with anybody, at least not this year.

  31. Brian in St Pete Says:

    Pass

  32. Dave Pear Says:

Just when you think you’ve seen the dumbest take ever, here comes Bowen to out-stupid anything yet written.

Might as well see if Jack Thompson, the “Blowin’ Samoan,” is available.

Tards gonna tard. Thanks, Rod Munch.

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

Dave Peartard is quoting Rod Munchtard now! Bosstard will be so proud of you!

  34. PSL Bob Says:

    NO!!!

  35. Beeej Says:

I’d bet a fair amount of money that Trask would be more effective here than Tannehill

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

There was a time when I figured Ryan Tannehill could do better on a good team…but he’s in his mid-30s now and has no chance of success. Stick with what we have.

Certainly, even if Kyle Trask turns out to be bad, he cannot be worse than Ryan Tannehill.

  37. go dawgs Says:

I would dump trask and his gator fan boys and look at tannehil as a quality backup.

  38. JustVisiting Says:

I’m with garro: “4 touchdown throws and 7 interceptions”. How does this sound appealing?!

  39. Let em bake Says:

Like many qbs, when you lose a stud like aj brown, your numbers drop. Baker minus mike would be noticeable . Tannehill is a perfect fit here. If Bucs are 5-5 midway, I want a seasoned vet who can get Bucs wins the final third of the season if baker gets hurt. He got that big contract in tennesse for a reason.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

Ho in Michigan apparently doesn’t want humor to be a part of the dialogue. No problem. Rod’s posts are entertaining, where the Hoebag is good for curing insomnia.

Hey – wasn’t the Hoe the same genius who said Tom Brady was washed and we didn’t need a splash signing?

    Sheer genius that one.

  41. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, Dave Pear, only about 95% of your posts are stupid sh!t like how terrible Bowles and the Bucs defense is, yet they only gave up 19.1 ppg last year. You’re a regular rocket surgeon with that junk. Hahaha

  42. Dude Says:

“yet they only gave up 19.1 ppg last year.”

Tied for 5th best in the league and we STILL went 9-8, which explains how we won a game 9-0 at the end of the season

  43. Dave Pear Says:

Bowels record is what as a head coach?

Bowels defense gives up how many yards per game passing?

Bowels defense can’t stop a good offense. Maybe Bowels can beat Carolina’s UFL QB. Anyone good throws for a gazillion yards.

Who has the worst rushing offense in the league for 2 years in a row?

Whose team never scored a TD in their opening drive last season?

Whose team almost always gives up an opening score to the opponent?

Whose team starts out flat and slow on both sides of the ball, and shows up especially flat for critical games?

What coach can mangle clock management like he was trying to use a sundial?

Sorry I can’t remember his name. Losers are rarely remembered.

The ppg stat is an anomaly against yards per game given up. Without improvement, a reversion to the mean is a certainty.

    These are facts, jacks.

  44. kaimaru Says:

    @Dave Pear

Our #1 corner had the worst statistical year of his career and got traded. A rookie played more snaps at corner than our top two players. Our other safety gave up a perfect QB rating and only 3 incompletions

    #dontgivemefacts

  45. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Tannehill still probably better than Baker and his $100 million contract

  46. drdneast Says:

If the Bucs sign Tannehill that would leave Trask with one cheek hanging off the end of the bench. Who knows, since Wolford had as good a preseason as Trask did last year, it might even mean Trask could start selling life insurance like every other Gator QB drafted into the NFL

  47. adam from ny Says:

ohhhh joe…i would take tannehill as the backup to mayfield in a heartbeat…

he’s one of those guys you can throw into that small group in the league, as a “top backup/slash/ borderline starter”…

i would put him in that group at this point in his career…

if your starter goes down for half a season and you need ample qb play to hold down the fort for a while, and compete, tannehill just might be the guy — but what is he gonna wanna be paid…???

but i do think we ride with trask and wolford

  48. Gene Says:

No interest in Tannehill but if we need a QB four weeks into the season, Dashaun Watson will probably be available for “a 6th round draft pick to be named later”. 😆

  49. adam from ny Says:

i could see him in seattle or denver or minnesota…

or new england or jacksonville or indy…

or vegas or washington or CAROLINA !!

canales is gonna need a guy there when his tiny 2nd year guy flops out like there’s no tomorrow

  50. Addb Says:

    Falcons could use him

  51. Shane Callahan Says:

The QB room is just fine. If Baker gets hurt, Trask could come in and kill it for all we know???
