“Across The Board We All Kind Of Need To Step Up”

May 2nd, 2024

Kacy Rodgers wants the entire d-line to put a smile on his face.

Two guys with bull’s-eyes on their backs, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Logan Hall, better find a way to raise their games this year.

JTS is already at the end of the pier. The Bucs decided to not exercise his fifth-year option, so if JTS doesn’t demonstrate production close to his draft status, he’s very likely gone or at least returning on a cheap contract.

It’s almost the same for Hall. He was invisible last year. He started 13 games yet only had a half-sack. That is downright inexcusable for a starting defensive tackle who was a high second-round pick.

Talk about the ghost of Ghost Johnson!

Yeah, those two guys have to prove, in a hurry, they belong starting on an NFL field. But on Tuesday, Bucs defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers wasn’t using Hall and JTS as scapegoats.

Rodgers said everyone on the defensive line has to pick it up, not just the two low-production, high-draft-pick guys in Hall and JTS.

“I will start with Vita [Vea],” Rodgers said. “He’s got to take another — he’s got to stop being a good player and be great all the time.

“I kind of think Calijah [Kancey’s production] needs to go up for him. He had an injury-riddled season and had 5.5 sacks. Let’s see what you can do with a full season. I think he needs to take a step.

“I think Greg Gaines needs to make a step. He kind of shows up in limited play. The thing is [he was] coming in he was a starter, [but on depth chart] he’s now a backup. But he can make plays.

“Across the board we all kind of need to step up.”

So while Rodgers agreed the premise when he met with the media on Tuesday that it is high time JTS and Hall demonstrate they belong, Rodgers wanted to focus on his best players on the line playing better as well.

  2. Capt. Tim Says:

I think thats a pretty fair assessment
Glad we added s rush Lber in the Draft.
Really wish we had added a DE. Im not thrilled about JTS and Gholsten being our starting DEs

  3. BUCS TRUCK Says:

Captain Tim. call back in when your Sober. You damn near mist. on. everything you wrote. Do you really follow the Bucs

  4. Dadgumit Says:

    Why would Rogers say otherwise?

  5. Joe Says:

    Why would Rogers say otherwise?

Well, Joe found it refreshing that he basically said their big guns have to play better (because JTS and Hall are sucking eggs).

  6. Capt. Tim Says:

    Bucs truck.
The worst kind of internet troll. Ive never seen you post a single opinion here.
I doubt you have any. Just looking for any excuse to insult someone for voicing THEIR opinion.
How bad is you your life? How much failure does it take to make you that hateful.
    My guess is- a lifetime!

So, you are pretty happy with JTS and Gholsten as our two starting DEs again?
Oh yeah, you should stick to poor insults pal. I think your “opinions” would just pile more failure on you.
Sure. No reason to improve the last place Place pass rush.
    Riiiiiight. Genius.
    Try drinking more.

3rd time some random jackass has jumped on one of my post.
All 3 were names Ive never seen before.
Im thinking its the same guy, whos butt hurt about something.
Grow up dude. Its a place to voice opinions, not to all agree on everything. Some of my favorite posters never agree with me on anything. But they give me a new perspective

At least stick to one name. Its the internet. You dont have to hide. Its too much trouble to look for you! Lol

Don’t scare me like that! Bringing up the ghost is inexcusable behavior, ghastly even ghoulish. 👻 Michael Johnson had one good season at Cincy 11.5 sacks. He played 9 seasons with Cincy and one miserable vanishing act with the Bucs. Then poof he floated back to Cincy to average 3 sacks a season for 4 more seasons. What a waste of money. I was praying we would find a DE in the draft. After watching tape * YouTube lol* I’m excited about this Alabama beast.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Well, Joe found it refreshing that he basically said their big guns have to play better (because JTS and Hall are sucking eggs).’

This is Springtime Joe; 2024 football has barely begun. Rodgers is just trying to raise expectations for everyone on the DLine. Guess I have trouble understanding why you’re so obsessed with JTS & Hall. Are they playing like 1st Rnd picks? He11 no. Are they playing like 3rd or 4th Rnd picks? Maybe, and that’s where both probably should’ve been drafted.

But THAT’S on JL, not on them. They were both developmental projects; we knew that when we drafted them. Personally I was surprised when we drafted them where we did, and so were a bunch of others (you probably included). Like Nick Saban said, once you’re drafted, doesn’t matter what round you were drafted in; up to you to prove that you belong.

Maybe Kacy Rodgers is the problem?

  11. Lt. Dan Says:

    Dang..Kacy calling dudes out!

  12. SlyPirate Says:

    7th in Rushing Yards Allowed
    4th in Points Allowed

    Carolina 9-0
    Philly 31-9

    Slow your roll, hater.

Defense did alright. JTS led the team in sacks for half the year. He stalled out. Hall was passable. If you hate Hall, you hate Gholston. Do they need to improve? Yes. It’s their contract year but no need to hate on the better side of the ball.

I remember an offense that ranked near the bottom for most of the season and finished 19th with the 32nd rush attack.

  13. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Capt Tim – I think you need to do some homework on a 3-4 defense and what that means for a DE and LB. Titles don’t mean much in our D. Ghouls ton is a DL, not a DE. Our LBs are DEs. You are getting stuck on titles.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

I’d say JTS is more meh that horrible. Hall truly stinks. Gholston is meh. Collectively the defense is pretty good, but the pass rush is unreliable. JTS has at least some potential.
I hope that new kid plays ok. Diaby has to carry a lot of the load.

  15. Fred McNeil Says:

73 BUCS fan, you are sorta of right. It’s hard to label what to call several of our core defenders position wise. Is there really any difference between a 3-4 and a 5-2? Yes. And no. Bowles scrambles ’em all up like eggs in a skillet anyway. Same with the secondary. The way Bowles deploys people is not always easy to define. Sometimes it blows up in our faces. Usually, it seems to be a bend but don’t break mentality. It’s rarely easy to define. It is usually fun to watch, though.

  16. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Fred: JTS has at least some potential.
I hope that new kid plays ok”

I “hope” things turn out like you hope for, however, I think hoping for JTS AND Logan Hall to blossom is like waiting for Godot. They currently take roster positions. Tons of 2nd tier DL will be on the street when the rookies start replacing them. I would look for help there and dump these guys if they don’t improve at training camp.

  17. Badbuc Says:

Limited DL scheme seems to be a problem. I see some one gap assignments…

  18. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Red bull or monster!!!! Love It !!! Let’s Go Bucs!!!!!! You Got This

  19. Jeremy Goins Says:

None of the league wide defensive stats has us anywhere near the bottom so our defense is not “bad”. But that bend but don’t break attitude sucks. Why not just full throttle all the time? Why give the opposing to defense a chance that get hot? I think that is a poor defensive strategy. Pass rush will force the QB to make mistakes. Good defenders in the backfield will take advantage. I think turnovers start when we are rushing the passer. Let’s hope these new defenders can create what it takes

  20. Jeremy Goins Says:

” Why give the opposing offense time to heat up?”

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

    74 Bucs an.
While its true some positions are interchangeable, the Bucs produce a depth chart once the season starts. They dont have one up currently.
But would you do a quick depth chart?
    List two players deep.
    De, NT, De
    Olb, mlb, mlb, olb.
    Cb, safety,safety, Cb
    It always proves enlightening.

  22. Toad Bowels Says:

Judge Culpepper could take Logan Hall’s roster spot this year.
    Don”t sleep on him.
