Bucky Irving Makes Defenders Miss

April 27th, 2024

Bucs RB Bucky Irving.

Simply put, when Bucky Irving touches the rock, he gets yards.

The past two seasons at Oregon, Irving, today’s Buccaneers fourth-round pick, averaged over six yards a carry. That’s pretty good.

In the passing game Irving shined. In 2022, Irving had 9.6 yards a catch coming out of the backfield.

Joe likes this pick because Irving makes guys miss. Irving forced 44 missed tackles running the ball his final season at Oregon. Joe doesn’t know if Rachaad White has done that in two years as a Bucs running back.

The Bucs sorely need a running back who can make guys miss.

Im all about it….him or Estime! Whose gonna be left when we pick….

  2. All_da_way Says:

This is a solid selection by the Bucs.

Bucs now have weaponized the offense to the point where Baker can cook.

  3. rrsrqnc Says:

Yep, when I watched this guy in games last year, I was like, I wish Bucs running backs get run through tackles like Bucky did. Not mad about this pick at all but I also hope it pushes Sean Ticker

  4. MadMax Says:

    We got Bucky? well daaaamnnn!

  5. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Somewhere, my brotha Madmax is losing his mind.

  6. MadMax Says:

    I need more coffee

  7. MadMax Says:

Na Luv, Im good, love this pick….him or Estime was my two choices….look back in the archives….i have no reason to lie lol

  8. Marques Says:

Very good but back rb. He has very good vision. Very shifty.

  9. Marques Says:

    Very good back cut rb

  10. MadMax Says:

C Barton and Braswell…and i wanted Bullard but he went before our pick, so we took next best slot cb/safety….the WR, yeah we needed that too but i had no skin in the game looking at WR…..and then RB i said Estime or Bucky…

    We did it Luv….

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Great pick. I’m saw him play last year and was impressed by his explosiveness. He’s extremely elusive and very productive.

  12. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Horrible pick. Braelon Allen runs over people. And now he’s a Jet.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

I know you mentioned Bucky Irvin early on in the process—I just wanted to give you a shoutout for that.

  14. Simeon4HOF Says:

I like him just hope one of our RBs can run inside one day. He’s shifty but real little is my main concern. With Barton and Opeta should be a lot more room inside. We shall see. Liam wanted this so … OK targeted him for a reason apparently. Just really feel GA DB was drafted alot higher than he woulda normally went. Seemed Estime or Allen was best for us, but I ain’t no scout or OC and atleast we got our Center. Go Bucs

  15. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

Underdog fantasy has a pretty cool breakdown on him-

  16. BucsFan Says:

Actually this is Lichts’ 1st really questionable pick. Bucky is slow, would rather run through a wall than around it, and is not ready for NFL pass protection duty. Not seeing this one at all.

  17. Tbbucs3 Says:

This confirms it, Jason Licht hates power backs

  18. Scott Says:

All advanced metrics point to this guy being an elite runner and great after the catch

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

    *Hates drafting power backs

  20. HeavyE Says:

Terrible pick! We run the ball up the gut, what is he going to provide, when that is our scheme, he is too small, should have selected Braylon Allen instead!!!!

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Finally, helping the offense…….C, WR, RB…….now let’s go get a TE or LB.

  22. Simeon4HOF Says:

Looks like draft got off track once Bowles had JL reach for DB

  23. WilieG Says:

I hope the Bucs give this kid a long look if White continues going down at first contact.

  24. Simeon4HOF Says:

Will never understand why we didn’t draft Allen, had thought that was the plan and was trying to warm up to the Bucs taking the DB, so long as they still got Allen or Estime in the 4th

  25. chark Says:

Would have rather waited till 6th and go for kimani vidal, whom I think will be better

  26. MadMax Says:

thanks Luv, i try as always…sorry im so hungover and late to the game today brother lol

  27. Brandon Jeff Says:

Maybe he is our return guy.

  28. BucsFan Says:

If Licht really wanted to draft an elite back he should have traded up to Dolphins spot and grabbed Jaylen Wright who is superior to Bucky in every regard.

  29. ocala Says:

College Football’s Fastest Players: Most Appearances for 2023 season:

    Bucky Irving, Oregon: 5 times
Bucky Irving kicked off his 2023 campaign with a bang. He skirted through the Portland State defense and topped out at 21.8 mph on this 52-yard touchdown run.

Trey Benson, Florida State: 5 times

TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State: 4 times

    Blake Corum, Michigan: 4 times

    Dylan Edwards, Colorado: 3 times

    Jawhar Jordan, Louisville: 3 times

  30. Jeffrey Becker Says:

mixed feelings. his tape is pretty good, lots of quick cuts to extend plays. wanted Tennessee guy. that being said, i like that he’s small. he prolly gets lost in the wash at times, and he almost never fumbles. wanted a guy known for protection abilities, or a guy like Estime who can knife through creases in short yardage spots. I love that he came from Oregon though. we got a Bama, a Georgia, a Washington, and an Oregon. Now we can draft Michigan TE. with improved blocking, at least on one side of the line, we should be able to convert more often in short yardage, something we direly need to do.

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

    Lol, It’s all good, bruh

  32. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Buckeyebuckchuck Says:”Horrible pick. Braelon Allen runs over people. And now he’s a Jet.”

Braelon is huge, more like a fullback, but he is slow getting to the line (no burst) and has tight hips. Hell run over people but will not make you miss like Irving.

  33. Simeon4HOF Says:

Highlights look nothing special, against college competition at that

  34. Beeej Says:

Well pooh. Estieme is the best back remaining

  35. Jeffrey Becker Says:

What’s interesting is that Bucky Irving has drawn comparisons to Rams running back Kyren Williams, who ran for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns last year in a breakout season. Of course, new Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen wasn’t with Los Angeles last season, but he will have worked with Williams when he was a rookie in 2022. Irving had 56 catches last year, I’m thinking that is the primary reason for the pick. Whether White is available or not, we can stick with our normal offense, and will always have a big play waiting to happen on a dump-off. Keeps backers honest.

  36. Simeon4HOF Says:

Fantasies of Estime vacated. Hoping and attempting to trust that Liam is building the Offense his way. Just seems like Bowles bright ideas routinely interfere with draft strategy. For example .. Tryon and Hall

  37. Simeon4HOF Says:

Was so happy Estime and Allen fell to us potentially in 4th, specially Estime. Maybe some Intel on then we didn’t like .. only the powers to be at OneBuc really know right

  38. Simeon4HOF Says:

We did get Barton. Sky the limit in Running game now .. jury out on how our backs run inside. Will be thankful for where we did vastly improve and fill holes. Thing is no picks now until depth very late in Draft. So our team is basically set, lacking power up the middle. Maybe White cN improve his game there. Lay off the interviews #1 until you do

  39. Larrd Says:

His helmet looks too big for his body in some of those highlights. Like a PeeWee player. I can’t unsee it.

  40. Free Will Says:

I like the pick, I think it gives us competition at 3rd down back with edmonds. Also tucker will develope into that thumper to give us the 3 dimensional rb dynamic that will boost our run game!

  41. Simeon4HOF Says:

If our running game still sucks, it’s on Liam, Bowles, RB scouts, and JL. Bowles must really like that DB. Just expected Estime or Allen. Bright side is we have a darn good Oline now so

  42. Jim Johnson Says:

This pick is more about the special teams rule changes. Irving will undoubtedly be the teams new kick returner and compete for 3rd on the teams RB depth chart.

  43. KiDxCuRRy Says:

Braelon is the back we needed. Like this kid but we have enough small scat backs. Needed a different dimension for short yardage plays

  44. Proudbucsfan Says:

Has anyone drafted Trotter Jr yet ?

  45. Durango 95 Says:

    Simeon4HOF Says:

    ———

    This.

  46. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs needed a power back. At best this guy is good for a few screens and passes out of the backfield and as a kick and punt returner. Won’t last in the NFL. Would have rather seen another Edge or a DT. We can always get a RB as a UFA.

  47. Proudbucsfan Says:

I don’t like this pick, nor did I like the slot corner in the third. The receiver we picked is injury prone

  48. Marine Buc Says:

Bucky Irving is a poor man’s Christian McCaffrey.

    Great receiver, elusive, quick, fast.

The more film I watch on this guy the more I like the pick…

If our offensive coordinator wanted Ray Davis then Ray Davis would have been the pick.

  49. Brandon Jeff Says:

I’m seeing potential here. White is not a threat out of the backfield, but is a threat as a receiver in the flat. He is elusive in space, but this kid creates his own space.
Imagine a two back set where you have the threat of Irving as a runner And White as a receiver. This will cause defenses to stack the box opening up our passing game.
Maybe I’m dreaming, but this kid could give us options.

  50. adam from ny Says:

What if we have a Darren Sproles in Bucky?

    🐣🙂🙂

  51. MadMax Says:

Yeah, Trotter Jr with our 6th…or trade into the 5th for him

COME on Jason, he’s still there…his Dad played for us!!!!

  52. Netwalker Says:

Perfect for kick return duties. Good hands, good vision, fast shifty feet. The new kickoff rules are custom made for this guy.

  53. Irishmist Says:

Well, Tampa didn’t get Tampa, but the Bucs got Bucky.

  54. Ugo Says:

Some of you are acting like this kid is 165lbs. He is 5’9, just 21 yrs old and weighs close to 200lbs. He will probably add several pounds over the next 12 months.

Do I need to remind you that the greatest running back ever was 5’8 and 200lbs, he was on stage at the draft at one point, goes by the name of Barry Sanders.

In no way am I comparing the two but to say that Irving is too small to be an NFL rb is just silly

  55. unbelievable Says:

Can he hold up in the NFL though?

Those highlights look great… against scrubs who can’t tackle and won’t be playing in the NFL. What’s he going to be able to do against a real defense?

  56. chark Says:

Bucky Irving will not get many looks like he did at oregon with that offense and offensive line. This is not college and the defenders are much better. He will be mitigated at the next level. This is a poor pick. This guy is a luxury 3rd 4th string back at best..darren sproles at best

  57. chark Says:

Kimani Vidal would be a much better pick

  58. Oneilbuc Says:

This was a bad pick he’s short and slow!! Licht just don’t know how to pick runningbacks.

  59. Steven007 Says:

Unbelievable, all highlights look great. I trust that Spytek and the GM and the other scouts, now including Coen, see something they like. That much is obvious. In fact they passed on Coen’s college running back who was sitting there. I trust they have a plan. Doesn’t mean the kid will work out but certainly as a fan I hope so.

  60. PewterStiffArm Says:

Is there a little bit of Warrick Dunn mixed in his running?

  61. Pickgrin Says:

    Looks shifty…..

I’m dubious of this pick with Davis and other higher rated backs still on the board….

    We’ll see….

He’s a Buccaneer so guess I’m rooting for Bucky now.

  62. Brandon Jeff Says:

Warwick Dunn played at 5’-9 and 187lbs. Basically the same size.
    Not seeing an issue here.

  63. Idroolpewter&red Says:

Watching this kid’s highlights, my inner monologue was channeling Chris Berman, “He could. Go. All. The. Way.

  64. James West Says:

Light may have found us Warrick Dunn 2.0, I like it

  65. Woodenman Says:

Funny these teams spend millions scouting these players and some named chark thinks he knows more than all them

  66. Brandon Jeff Says:

I trust Light and his Krewe on this pick. I think they see something and have a plan. This kid could become a fan favorite!

  67. unbelievable Says:

@Steven007 – that’s a fair point about passing on Ray Davis.

I trust Licht with a lot- but running back hasn’t been his forte.

  68. Bucfever54 Says:

    I love this Bucky!

  69. Denny Gay Says:

    Looks like a natural runner

  70. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

Reminds me somewhat of Greg Pruitt….

  71. Esteban85 Says:

    Shifty shifty

  72. Biggun Says:

Watching Bucky’s reel it looks like watching Super Mario running and defenders missing with sound effects! GO BUCKY BUCS

  73. orlbucfan Says:

Low center of gravity–keeps his balance–small and fast–can catch the @@@@ ball–Warrick Dunn like–good pick. And yeah, we need a returner!
