Unpopular Todd Bowles

March 31st, 2024

Todd Bowles

Joe has seen anecdotal evidence pile up in polls on this site and via other means, but now Joe has raw comparison data.

Todd Bowles just isn’t a popular head coach among fans.

For years, Joe has engaged in chatter about how when it comes to YouTube views, Bowles news conferences and interviews don’t generate the interest of other coaches around the NFL.

Despite the Bucs having a larger YouTube subscriber following than most NFL teams, including every NFC South team, the Dolphins and Jaguars — and big market clubs like the New York Jets, Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams — Bowles doesn’t generate a lot of views.

At the NFL annual meeting in Orlando last week, every head coach participated in a roundtable breakfast with media on either Monday or Tuesday. And a total of 24 teams posted video of their coach’s breakfast news conference on YouTube.

Joe painstakingly looked up each one and logged the number of views below.

The results illustrate how unpopular Bowles is, Joe believes, especially after five seasons in Tampa that included Bowles’ legendary coaching in the Super Bowl and back-to-back NFC South titles as head coach.

Mike Tomlin –  154,000  YouTube views (rounded off)
Antonio Pierce – 63,000
Dan Campbell – 46,000
Jim Harbaugh – 39,000
Matt LaFleur – 27,000
Mike McDaniel – 27,000
Matt Eberflus – 24,000
Andy Reid – 23,000
Kevin O’Connell – 19,000
Raheem Morris – 16,000
Dave Canales – 13,000
Sean Payton – 12,000
Sean McVay – 11,000
Robert Saleh – 11,000
John Harbaugh – 10,000
Doug Pederson – 9,300
Shane Steichen – 8,900
Mike McCarthy – 8,500
Sean McDermott – 8,000
Kevin Stefanski – 7,600
Todd Bowles – 7,500
Jerod Mayo – 4,300
DeMeco Ryans – 3,800
Dennis Allen – 2,000

Yes, there are variables when it comes to what delivers YouTube views, such as the thumbnail image on the video and the caption. But there isn’t much difference between the NFL teams’ presentation of this event last week.

As Joe noted, the Bucs have a huge YouTube following compared to other clubs, more than 200,000 subscribers. And it did strike Joe that Bowles was significantly behind his Florida counterparts.

Joe wishes Bowles moved the needle with fans. Perhaps that day will come if the wins continue to pile up.

Let’s face it, Todd is not exactly an electric personality…just a good coach

  2. Bucben61 Says:

What’s this have to do with the price of tea in China

  3. Capt. Tim Says:

    Two years, two NFC championships.
    Thats pretty charismatic to me!

  4. Capt. Tim Says:

    NFC SOUTH championships*

  5. Dan the Bucs fan Says:

Our fan base is not that smart. Fact is Bowles is a really good football coach. The players love him his defense won is a superbowl and I think he just might do it again. He isn’t flashy but he is the kind of leader we needed. He created a great culture! He should get a lot more respect from this fan base.

  6. ATLBUC Says:

I think it more that he’s a boring speaker. I like him sometimes but I’ll be darned if I listen to an entire interview.

  7. Jmarkbuc Says:

Be great if he learned the proper use of time outs.

  8. Knothead71 Says:

Coach Bowels, for me, is a tough coach to like. In my opinion he is slow to make adjustments and I think hard-headed when it comes to benching/correcting under performing players.
His conferences are dry and monotone and it’s kind of hard to stay interested in what he’s saying.
Now with all that being said, it doesn’t matter if I like Coach Bowels or not, I ain’t trying to date him. JUST WIN, BABY! GO BUCS!

  9. Toad Bowels Says:

Dennis Allen puts the SLIME in Slimey Saints. Dennis Allen is a prick and has basically encouraged dirty play. It is fitting he finished in last place.

  10. Mort Says:

football is literally not a popularity contest.

  11. Gipper Says:

Bowles is a solid guy who makes the team the story rather than himself. It is obvious why the players respect him. He appears to be the kind of coach who keeps things in house. Don’t have to worry about him trying to win popularity contests with the media. Hoping he can beef up the O line and add a decent pass rushing threat in 2024. If he and Licht can add to those areas, 10-11 victories in 2024 will raises his profile.

  12. lambchop Says:

    @Todd Bowels,

I think that award is reserved for Gregg Williams and Sean Payton. I don’t see Dennis Allen being that bad compared to those two losers. But, the Saints still have a few core players from the BountyGate era.

  13. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Giving up at the ends of halves, holding onto timeouts like they are Spanish dubloons, addiction to “3 yards and a cloud of dust,” and pampering a petulant underachiever instead of playing a smarter and much more technically sound linebacker.

    These might be reasons.

Oh yeah… And blitzing Matt Stafford.

  14. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I’m not a huge fan of either guy and I still have questions but the players love Bowles, the players love Baker and we have Mike Evans.
Barring injuries, the Bucs win the division and make some noise in the playoffs.

  15. PNW Buc Says:

Let me start out with, I’m one of the few that would go through heck and high water for him…however, fancy but…
How he handled that lion playoff game and what he said on the podium after is tough to forgive.
31 other coaches would have called that time out with 26 seconds. Force Dan Campbell to make a decision, punt or a 48 yard fg. Then Force the long snapper to make a good snap. In the history of football, there has never been a bad snap? Or a missed fg if that was the choice?
And then on the podium, he said, the game was over, you know when you know!?!?! I’m not saying he quit, but it’s a really bad look.

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

It is not very informative much less interesting to hear what he
usually has to say. He has gotten a little better lately, though. I hope he improves in most ways.

  17. Onetrickpony Says:

Kind if like watching paint dry

  18. Bucs Guy Says:

All that tells us is people don’t watch him on You Tube. Why do I need to watch him there when Joe feeds us anything important?

  19. I remember 21 Says:

I have much more to say on this subject, but I’ll start with this:

    DAN THE BUCS FAN:
Whaaaat are you smoking??? I know our D had a great postseason and especially SB in 2020. But to act like “his D won us a SB” is clinically insane. That offense had: 2 guaranteed HOFers (Brady and Gronk), 2 pretty likely HOFers (Evans and Wirfs, if they keep the current pace), and 1 more if AB wasn’t such an unlikable crazy jackass. That’s 5 HOFers out of 11 starters. The D, if Heaven and Earth and the stars and like 10 other things align, will have 2 (David & Winfield). They were great, and bowles deserves his flowers for that specific game plan, but let’s keep some perspective here.

  21. Tony Marks Says:

We need to speed up time to get to the draft for the sake of joes having nothing meaningful to write about. Youtube views is a new low in desperation for sports content
Joe writes about what Joe finds interesting about the Bucs. Thank you for reading. –Joe

  22. heyjude Says:

I agree with others commenting, Comparing to others, Todd is sort of boring, calm demeanor, and pretty much wouldn’t be a YouTube sensation. And that is okay. The players respect and like him. That is good enough.

  23. Darin Says:

A boring listen who doesn’t try to the end to win every game. And isn’t good with clock/time management. Sounds to me like someone who should be unemployed.

  24. ModHairKen Says:

Why does his popularity matter? Do you want to win Super Bowls or click contests? Don’t answer that.

  25. Yar Says:

PNW he quit, gave up, unforgivable.

  26. Tebowtime Says:

I like him but his pressers are boring, he’s a bad speaker, and he never gives up anything useful.

I used to love watching Gruden though lol.

Having worked in the media myself I always LOVE when Joe posts this. I wish I had his independence when I worked. I admire it and yeah that gives him the freedom to post what HE sees as the truth.

I came out of journalism into sports which admittedly is more entertainment.
But I still maintain those values and Joe is a solid journalist who clearly identifies his sources..his own possible prejudices…and is VERY INDEPENDENT!!!

A lot has been made of media in recent years and largely because the vast majority are forced by economics to “cater” “kiss up” to their audiences. They need ratings and $$.

I admire Joe for carving out a somewhat unique position that has freed him to remain independent…at least as far as the NFL and Bucs will let him 🙂

Everybody here should values Joe’s independence and if you don’t like it too bad. That independence frees him to tell the TRUTH…at least as he sees it in his HONEST opinion.

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

Todds alright. He’s not your party starter. But the man knows Defense and has gotten better over the years in hiring great Offensive people. Just a few months ago, Many of you were ready to send a posse after Bowles. But he turned things around. I got him going a step further than last yrs playoff game this season.

  32. Tony marks Says:

“I admire it and yeah that gives him the freedom to post what HE sees as the truth.I came out of journalism into sports which admittedly is more entertainment. But I still maintain those values ”

this is a blog about opinions so I get it ( I was just pointng out the obvious – some periods are low in news content ) but to actually claim journalism is about the freedom to report what you see as the truth just shows how piss poor the field has got. Journalism used to be and is supposed to be about getting a story right and reporting the facts and had a far higher standar than the freedom to report what you THINK is right. Glad your are out of it but unfortunately the field is still chock full of people who have no jormalism, standards.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Coaches with losing records are generally unpopular.

  36. stpetebucfan Says:

    @Tony

I always have great respect for your posts and so I take your point. Yes this is an opinion blog and not a “factual” fact finder necessarily.

That was poor writing on my part, you are correct mea culpa.

One person’s “facts” now seem to be another person’s “opinion”. I should have said Joe always is honest in his attempt to point out “fact” from “opinion” on his part. I guess we can quibble with ‘facts’ unless they’re stats.

Now days however we have an “alternative fact” society for one half of our nation. Lies no longer matter! One of the leading networks confessed to lying in a court of law. No retraction for their duped customers…just 3/4 of a billion $$ to the people these LIARS defamed. Sadly their duped viewers still believe their lies.

I do not sense an agenda from Joe and when he has one…get an edge rusher…he’s upfront and honest.

I guess we can debate facts and opinions but are we still debating honesty and motivation? I find Joe to be honest and I can’t say that about many outlets.

  37. stpetebucfan Says:

    Hunter

Thanks so much for making my point!!!

“You made me remember this wonderful Mika Brzezinski quote: “Our Job Is to Control Exactly What People Think.”

Hunter the crack has twisted your memory. You can’t even get the “conspiracy” correct”

Mika NEVER said that and you’re so slow you didn’t even get what the controversy was actually about.

Rumor mongers similar to haters like yourself accused her of saying that about Elon Musk’s beliefs..”control exactly what people think” when in reality she didn’t say that about Musk but rather quoting TRUMP’S position of controlling what peope think”.

The hate and fear mongering is corrupting whatever semblance of a brain you have crackhead.

  38. heyjude Says:

Well said stpetebucfan. I agree, and also agree that Joe does a great job giving facts with no agenda, and allows the comments to agree and disagree. I haven’t been commenting for very long, but before I did I always would read the articles that Joe wrote and enjoyed the comments. Finally I got the nerve to comment. I am a WaPo type of reader for most of the news, but Joe gives us a lot of sports news and tidbits that I would never find to read. And the majority of us are Buc fans!

    —-

I won’t dive into that because thats on the edge of poltiics but no side is exempt. To me it really started when news shows started mixing news with commentary to make hour long programs. 30 minutes news had no time for that and just covered the news, sports and weather. then social media brought us the worse thing the internet brought us and that put the fork in it. Now truth isn’t based on fact but how well you market your name as a brand.

Sports “journalism” ? It rarely is ever that. I see most of it as talk shows – opinion ( and thats fine). Journalism to me signifiies regularly breaking news. Ira did that last season with who was goint to be the starting QB but most of the time it seems the news comes from twitter releases of just a handful of journalists . same four to five names for almost everything . I guess the big networks have a lock on inside information due to rep and size. MIght be no ones fault. just how the system works.

    ——

lol what is this? – give the teacher an apple day ?

Joes give thrir opinions with an agenda ( non sinister) all the time and its fair for a blog and commnetary site. Why shouldn’t they?

Never drafting a center in the first round and have to pick ane edge rusher first is not a fact . Its an opinion and when consistent its definitely an “agenda” and again thats fines but no need to twist and say its always just the facts.

  41. heyjude Says:

Tony marks. Hey, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Yes, Joe may want an edge rusher and yes tells us who and what he likes. And he does it in an upbeat and witty way with his writings. Joe says what he is feeling. And we all get to say how we feel too. I don’t take any of it as an agenda. More so freedom of speech.

  42. Tampa Thom Says:

I don’t know if the low number of views reflect his popularity or are just a result of his viewability; Todd Bowels does not give an entertaining interview. He is mono tonal and repeats the same cliches. I’d watch him more if he were a bit more entertaining.

  43. sweti_yeti Says:

Has more to do with his laid back personality. He doesn’t have any real hot takes or controversial statements. He’s just kind of boring, but it doesn’t matter if the players respect him.

  44. Tony marks Says:

“And we all get to say how we feel too. I don’t take any of it as an agenda. More so freedom of speech”

    Dictionary
Agenda : an underlying often ideological plan or program.

A program in which you say never ever draft a center is an agenda. doesn’t matter what you think. Words have meanings, freedom of speech and saying what you feel is not in question so thats meaningless. I was responding to your claim its fact based and its not ( especially not that because many teams HAVE drafted a center in the first round)

  45. SenileSenior Says:

First, there was no Trump quote. She was editorializing on what she thinks Trump does, “trying to control what people think.” Then her next words were, “THAT’S OUR JOB.”

The video is all over the place, and not hard to find. I see your journalistic ethics are no better than Mika’s. Your Bolshevik masters trained you well.

NO it’s called an OPINION. There is NOTHING “Ideological” about a football opinion!!!

Agenda is simply NOT USED IN THE CONTEXT YOU USED IT!

And agenda might be had I suppose if Joe posted hoping to achieve a certain result. Joe clearly admits he’s expressing his opinion and even concedes he may be aggravating powers that be at OBP. He’s not doing it to gather more clicks…he doesn’t need to. You’ve simply used the word agenda incorrectly now lets see if you can man up and accept correction!

  48. stpetebucfan Says:

Utter Rubbish. Go buy a dictionary because you don’t understand ideaologiclal either. Your own definition corrects you – its ANY system of ideas and ideals, ( the word esepecially is not a limiting word so you might want to learn that word too ). There are idieologies in science, society and yep even sports.

Fact is we’ve discussed AGENDAs on this sports blog multiple times.

Theres a PRo UF agenda and Yrask. Theres a get rid of Bowles at all cost agenda. Your mind is sp stuck on politics is malfunctioning . Agenda is not limited the way you use it and theres nothing sillier than claiming the dictionary meaning of words is not how anyone uses words….sigh

  51. Douglas Bennett Says:

Just win baby – as Al once said. He took a team that was supposed to win 3-5 games to the 4th quarter of making the NFC Campionship bracket. Dungy was considered boring until he took us there. Gruden was everyones favorite – until the Superbowl shine wore off and Arianseas an idol – until they didn’t repeat – and lucky for him, retirement ssved him
If Bowels gets to the final 4 a couple years. And or makes it to the “dance”, players will be secondary and everyone will be drinking the koolaid. Except for White, players seem to want to play for him and support him. Again, no one will give a spit unless they winm. Hell, if Perkins or.Sciano would have one we’d be all in, irrespective of 3 a days or toes on the line …

  52. Dave Pear Says:

In 7 seasons as a head coach, Todd has exactly two winning seasons.

That’s gonna get you a lot of press. Maybe in the job search market, for counselors to the youth of America.

    Great guy though.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Todd Bowles is pretty boring and doesn’t have much of a personality. At least in public, in any case. That is not a reflection of him as a coach, but I don’t think it’s really all that much of a mystery as to why people aren’t clicking on videos of him.

  54. heyjude Says:

Tony Marks – Since you used Todd Bowles as an example.

Yes, there seems to be many that want Todd fired and call him names, et al. Unfortunately, that happens with coaches, players, … But isn’t that more like an obsession, goal, belief, frustration, expression, ideas, own thoughts…? I am not in that group with a goals plan for Bowles. That would be his boss, the Glazers. Their goal and objective are to win games, make money… That isn’t an agenda item either. Same thing with Trask. However, he hasn’t had the opportunity to show us his strengths. So there is that. I am guessing the coaches in practice, on the field, know that reason. Not an agenda either. At my workplace, an agenda is what a meeting will be about. That is it.

  55. stpetebucfan Says:

    Tony

The word agenda is the plural for of the Latin word agendum, which literally means “something to be done.” The noun retains this meaning because an agenda is a plan — organized by time — of events or things to do. You might have a meeting, a lunch date, and a doctor’s appointment on your agenda for the day.

So Tony the wise man of the blog please inform us!

What is Joe’s agenda? What is his plan behind expressing his opinion that “HE BELIEVES” QB’s totally outweigh all other positions in the draft and Centers are not worth taking in the first round because they can be had in the 2nd and 3rd.

What is the “agenda” behind the opinion or belief?

You might have a meeting, a lunch date, and a doctor’s appointment.

You both are too daft to educate online

Google’s English dictionary as provided by Oxford Languages.

Agenda: the underlying intentions or motives of a particular person or group.

Etymology does not define words because language evolves with usage. Thats why we use ENGLISH dictionaries…smh

Neither of you know what Meeting the joes have so claiming now it means appointments or meeting just demonstrates you both are nitwits
Agendas are not necessarily evil or wrong. We all have them and yes they can pertain to anything in life including football
